PayPal launches credit card-reading iPhone accessory

A banner for PayPal Here

Today PayPal announced an accessory and app called Here, which enables card, cheque, and PayPal transactions through an iPhone. Whoever's taking the order just opens the app and taps whatever menu items they have registered. The buyer can sign for any of the payment methods with their finger on the iPhone's touchscreen, and have receipts texted to them. There's even support for tips. On the merchant side, invoices are saved for future reference without any cost, though they will be paying a 2.7% fee per transaction. The accessory is a pretty simple blue triangle with a little flap to keep it from spinning in the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Sounds an awful lot like Square? You betcha. The difference here is that a lot of people are already active with PayPal, and trust them for handling cash (for better or worse). PayPal has already been fairly active in the realm of mobile payments, but this is a big step towards bridging the gap to mainstream payment methods. NFC adoption is still a  long ways off, and I suspect systems like PayPal Here will see reasonable popularity before NFC does.

The initial launch for PayPal Here will be in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong, with select partners using the system now, and wider availability in those countries starting in April. Supported credit cards include Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Merchants interested in signing up can head on over to the PayPal Here minisite.

PayPal launches credit card-reading iPhone accessory

You can be assured that if NFC communication really takes off then all these widget card processing companies like Square, Intuit and now Paypal will bring out newer readers that are capable of processing using NFC.
Honestly though, who in blazes wants to fight with these NFC readers, most of them in the stores either won't work or don't work anywhere near as well as the advertising promoting it when first launched implied. I have yet to be able to just tap a card on these devices to get a transaction, I've either tried multiple times and then gave up or had it work after two or three attempts.
Now if they had the NFC information embedded in a chip under the skin then I could just beat the crap out of the reader and at least get some satisfaction from that if it doesn't read the information, LOL.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble but I was at a conference where a hacker took all the data off iPhones and Android devices in seconds and had everyone's passwords, account numbers, etc. I don't believe that NFC is going to be here the long haul until we get security on our mobile devices.

With that said our mobile credit card reader wouldn't connect (unlike the PayPal Here) image we have cases on our phones / ipads and they just don't work. After no help from PayPal and 10 different cables, a guy at Radio Shack mentioned CellPay Accessories and their 3.5mm audio extension cable. FYI for everyone with the same issue here's their site https://cellpayaccessories.com/affiliate/38/node/882

LIFE SAVER!!

What happens if someone drops and breaks your phone? I'd have it flat on a tableor counter for people to sign.

PayPal is the worse company on earth and I wish they would go bankrupt and fail. But they wont considering how many peoples money the crooks have stolen. FUUUUU****KKK Pay Pal....

12 Years as a Paypal merchant, over 12000 in Paypal transactions on both ebay and my website and never one problem
Always received payment on time
Payments from all over the world, never a problem
Those that can't use Paypal should stay off the Internet , it is so easy

I have had clients run way more than $10,000 through Paypal with no problem. Ever.
Another alternative to Square, is Phone Swipe. They take less than Square.

All it takes is some dishonest person to put in a claim for anything and you can get burned very easily. By Paypal its not a matter of people not being smart enough to use PayPal but its FACT that PayPal is very shady its highly documented. I wont put my whole experience on here because its too much to type but PayPal would have to pay me 1,000,000 in cash before I ever attempted to use their service again I don't care how small or large. If someone wants to only use Paypal is a big red flag to me these days.

So the company that has had more CC stolen from its users now wants to get into this. I'm sorry but if you asked me to use anything with eBay or PayPal. You just lost my business. Unless you had another method of payment.
