Plants vs. Zombies 2 launches July 18, will be available for free

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time, the follow up to the extremely popular Plants vs. Zombies, will be released worldwide July 18 exclusively for iOS devices. Additionally, Plants vs. Zombies 2 will have an invite-only preview next week at the E3 conference in Los Angeles. Popcap says the new game takes place across time, with new plants to help players defend against the zombie horde.

Designed from the ground up as a live service, the ever-expanding universe of Plants vs. Zombies 2 continues the epic struggle of plants defending your brainz against zombies from your backyard through the vast reaches of time, both past and future. New worlds with new levels, plants, zombies and new ways to play will be released on an ongoing basis. Leveraging the touch interface of Apple’s popular mobile devices, Plants vs. Zombies 2 includes all-new touch-screen power-ups that enable players to “break the fourth wall” and interact with zombies directly, as well as via plant defenses.

Unlike the original game, Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be a free-to-play game. A free initial download, the game will contain a number of in-app purchases for upgrades and items, though Popcap insists that players will be able to access every level of the game without paying anything. The exact nature of the in-app purchases has yet to be announced though they will probably be similar to those in the original Plants vs. Zombies. It’s good to know at least that the main game will be available without the need for an in-app purchase.

Yaaaaay --- more wallet-raping. I hope "freemium" is the death of these games. What happened to just buying a FULL game once??

I am totally with you, i would rather pay for the game if i want it and then get everything in the game for free there after.

One of my family's favorite games for the Ipad. My heart sunk when I read it would be a free to play game however. I'll have to take a wait and see approach now.

I paid $20 for Plants vs Zombies on my old PC, and it was well worth it. If it was anywhere nearly as good as the original, I'd happily pay that much for PvZ2. I'd also happily pay that much in a single in-app purchase that unlocks the entire game, forever. But I will not participate in and endless nickel-and-dime cycle.

I prefer to pay $1 for a non ad version. I bet the free would come with LOTS of ads. so much it's not worth to buy.

Hate this. I just want to buy a game and play it. If there are non-essential in app purchase (such as unlock all levels without beating the prior level) that's fine, but when you need coins or gems or some other bs to skip waiting periods or accomplish other crap then screw it. I'll hold judgement on this one, as I do love the first pvz, but if it takes 16 hours to grow a new plant but I can skip that 16 hours by paying 2000 coins, then forget it. I'd much rather just pay $5 or $10 for the complete game.

I paid $10 for the PvZ on my pc hopefully the IAP won't be too bad but i'm pretty worried that they will be :/

How is it the market supports IAP-based gameplay? Is tetris fun if you can buy only square blocks? That would be an extreme example.. but I get that kind of pointless feeling when I see the extra-powerful purchasable upgrades.
