Rogers: 80% of iPhone 4 activations were to existing customers
Rogers, the first Canadian carrier to offer the iPhone, put out a statement today saying 4 out of 5 iPhone 4 activations on their network went to existing customers. They're also extending some of their promotions for those who haven't yet snagged an iPhone 4 but might want to take advantage of them, especially the 6GB/$30 data plan. Act fast.
When Rogers/Fido launched the iPhone 4 on July 30, we announced special offers for our new and existing customers. Since then, we have activated a significant number of devices with 80 per cent having gone to our existing customers.
These special offers were scheduled to expire on Sept. 30, but we have some good news to share.
First, we are extending the 6GB/$30 promotion until Oct. 5. Second, we are extending one component of our early Hardware Upgrade offer through the end of the year. Any customer who activated or upgraded an earlier version of the iPhone with Rogers/Fido on a term contract on or before December 31, 2008 will be continue to be eligible for at least $480 off the no-term device price when they upgrade to an iPhone 4. They can pick up an iPhone 4 16GB/32GB for $159/$269 on a new 3-year voice and data plan.
While other components of our special iPhone 4 early HUP offer expire today, Rogers and Fido customers can continue to take advantage of our standard hardware upgrade savings. Fido customers can also add their Fido dollars to their Hardware Upgrade for additional savings.
Anyone rushing out? And from did they take those 20% new customer iPhone 4 activations from?

I like seeing my hand holding an iPhone there. :)
Imagine....
"eighty per cent" or "eighty percent?"
They better extend the offer. Most people I know can't even get an iPhone 4. There is simply no stock in Canada at Rogers. I have been trying to get a second one for my wife for weeks. Same story , no inventory. Come on Rogers, you could sell a lot more if you world order them.
The other 20% came mostly from first time smartphone buyers in the 18-23 category, and the rest Blackberry and Android users. I am just basing this on who I see in line at the Apple Store waiting to buy one.
"Act fast"??? Like how exactly? I'm trying for months to get an iPhone 4 from Rogers and they simply don't have it... This is ridiculous.
iphone is iphone.. everything else is just a iphone wanna be..
Can't you guys buy one from an Apple Store? Maybe it's different over there, but here in USA, I didn't go to At&t, I went to the Apple Store and they just did everything there, I thought it'd be the same other places too?
I don't know if this means much since all Canadian wireless providers offer iP4. Oh, wait...do they? Still can't get one at Fido.
so out of the 1000 sold iPhone 4s they had in stock during the first 2 months, they managed to attract 200 new customers - lucky they didn't have more to go around - please next time launch something real
Yeah, here in Canada, Apple is totally hosing ALL 3rd party sellers by hoarding all iPhone 4's for the Apple Stores. You need to go and stand in line at an Apple store to get a subsidized iPhone 4.
Or you can just walk in to an Apple Store and buy a contract-free, carrier-unlocked iPhone 4 with no waiting.
But you have to go to an Apple Store if you want an iPhone 4.
On launch day, I went to each of the 3 stores offering iPhone here in Sherbrooke. Impossible to get may hands on an iPhone 4. So, on the second day, I had to leave my name on a waiting list at Rogers for a 32 Gb. I was the eight on the list for a 32 gb and, today, I am still the eight on the list... When I checked last saturday morning, Rogers in Sherbrooke (Quebec) had not received any iPhones for the past 3 weeks (and, I assume, when I go there tomorrow, as I do every week just to keep some pressure on, they will not have received a single phone for the past month!)
I just can't believe that having put my name on the list the second day I still haven't got one 2 months after that and my rank in the list stayed the same ...
I am seriously thinking of getting a 32Go on Apple Web site and pay full price for it. Is Rogers carrying iPhones or not: when they don't get more than a handfull of 32g phones for the past 2 months, can they call themselves "a carrier" and look customers straight in the eyes? I will try to stay calm and keep other comments to myself.
I placed an order for 2 32gb's the day they launched got them last week. More than 2 months. Not Rogers fault. Apple's production limitations due to trying to stick to "conflict free" raw material silliness. Gotta say though, not sure why they'd expand their market (China) when they can't service existing well.
@jasonphil. Here in Canada if you want to buy an iPhone not for full price you have to go to a provider store. If you go to the apple store you pay full price. It's possibly because we have 3 main carriers that carry iPhone and a few sub-carriers that carry it also. But it's still not any easier to get unfortunately.
I love apple simply
Just got fed up, removed my name from Rogers' waiting list and purchased one on Apple Canadian Web Store this morning. iPhone 4 32g will be shipped october 26 and delivered on November 1
I signed the 30gig/month deal now without even gettin the iphone ..i better get it soon otherwise ill be paying for nothing.
I just got one on eBay for retail price, I wasn't gonna be waiting in no lines at one of the two apple stores in Calgary to get it a mere $200 cheaper... I also broke my 3GS and couldn't afford to wait, so there's that too, but I had it within a week while others I know have been on the waiting list since the end of July haha
Also what some are saying about getting the discount only at provider stores is not true, the apple stores will activate phones for Rogers, telus, and bell, also the Rogers early upgrade deal will be applied at the apple store.
Frankly, I find this whole iPhone 4 debacle discusting! I have been with Rogers for over 20 years, never missed a payment and always carried extra services, yet in spite of this, I can't even get on a list to receive an Iphone should one come available. While I fully understand that apple is the supplier, and stocks are low the way rogers has handled this is shockingly unprofessional. It demonstrates a real disrespect for the clients who have made rogers what it is today. I think it dreadful that Rogers call in, staff have told me not to buy from Rogers, go to apple.

iPhone 4 is a joke. The antenna useless, the proximity meter is broken and the glass breaks. It's junk! They aren't restocking, because they are trying to fix this pos phone.
They knew the phone was broken and still sold it. They had the bumpers ready for the release!? Then given out free!? Coincidence... Not a chance, they knew and still sold the phone. Disgusting. Someone should go to jail for fraud. If it was you or I, we would have.
