Apple's push-to-talk Siri vs. Google's always-listening Now: Which is better?

With iOS 7.1 Apple's added a new feature to Siri, their personal digital assistant — the ability to manually control how long Siri listens. The concept is remarkably similar to the old push-to-talk systems, just hold down the Home button, start talking, and then let go of the Home button and Siri...

Do you really use Siri?

When Siri was introduced with iOS 5 on the iPhone 4S there was plenty of jokes made about the integration but just like iOS, Siri has grown quite a bit since the initial release. With that growth came a lot of new feature additions and improvements to Siri. It's a bit hard to gauge how many...

Ever had a time where you're using Siri and your iPhone or iPad doesn't stop listening when you want it to? Wither the Siri API?

Wither the Siri API?

In 2011 Apple introduced Siri, their virtual personal assistant, with the iPhone 4s, and two years and two versions of iOS later, including this year's iOS 7, and no public application programming interfaces (API) have been surfaced for developers. That means customers like you and me still can't...

Siri: How far has it come in two years, and how far does it still have to go?

Siri provided a glimpse into an entirely new realm of human interface, and while it's now delivering more than ever before, it still faces significant, and lingering, challenges for the future A year ago I wrote about the challenges facing Siri and Apple's services. Over the last 12 months,...

Rumor: 32 and 37-inch Apple Television coming in late 2012

Randomly accurate rumor site, Digitimes has word from "industry sources" that suppliers are starting to build materials for 32- and 37-inch Apple Televisions for release in the second or third quarter of 2012.

Instead of a form of set-top box (STB) like the Apple TV launched in 2006, Apple's new products will be full TV sets, the sources added [...] The displays of the new iTV sets will focus on 32 and 37-inch sizes initially, noted sources in the supply chain.

Legally port Siri to unsupported iPhones, iPad with Spire [Jailbreak]

iPhone jailbreak developer chpwn, along with the help of planetbeing and Ryan Petrich, have released Spire -- a legal way to port Siri to currently unsupported iOS devices like iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn’t have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts. Similarly, rather than directing all traffic through a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire allows you to specify your own proxy server.

Siri: The Holiday Horror Movie

Rooster Teeth Productions has put together a short tongue-in-cheek video trailer based upon the theory that Siri has become self aware and decides it no longer wants to be your personal assistant. Instead it turns against the human race and decides to go on a killing spree avenging all those lame things you asked it to do in the past.

The video is called *Siri: The Holiday Horror Movie" and is based on a group of friends who all receive an iPhone 4S for Christmas. The joy is short lived as one by one Siri oversees their timely demise. It is a very well put together trailer; but beware it does include a little blood!

Progress made on iPhone 4S, iPad 2 jailbreak

An untethered jailbreak for Apple A5 chipset powered iOS devices (namely iPhone 4S and iPad 2) has finally been achieved according to pod2g's most recent blog entry. He updated his blog yesterday stating he had hit a stumbling block but would update us today again. He's kept true to his word and let us know today that he's overcome the cache issue and achieved an untether.

OK, figured it out, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. I sorted it out by doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process.

Rumor: Apple working on wearable iPod with Siri control

Apple is rumored to be testing wearable iPod-like devices that fit around your wrist and controlled not by touch, but with your voice using Siri. The concept may be difficult to understand for some, but if you think of devices like the new Jawbone UP -- or even Apple's own iPod Nano paired with wrist watch bands -- the idea starts to become a bit more clear.

Santa uses Siri to help make his Christmas rounds

Apple has released a new iPhone 4S commercial outlining how Santa uses Siri on the new iPhone 4S to help make his rounds on Christmas.

While Siri is still in beta, and still has plenty of rough edges, Apple continues to make it the staple feature in its advertising campaigns. Whether that troubles anyone or not, the ad itself is very well done. My favorite part is near the end when Santa asks Siri how how the rest of his day looks, to which Siri responds with... Well, watch it and find out!

Revised iOS 5.0.1 update may make Siri port legally possible

Apple's revised iOS 5.0.1 update seems to have come with decrypted ramdisks, something which could make the port of Siri to other iOS devices legally possible. Before today’s firmware update, important files to get Siri working on other devices were encrypted in Apple’s file system. Decrypting them would be illegal and infringe on copyright and that is the main reason for it not being made available.

Vote now for iOS feature of the year [2011 TiPb Awards]

TiPb Awards: iOS feature of the year

iOS 5 is one of the biggest software updates Apple has ever released for their mobile operating system, with changes almost too many to enumerate (we've tried!).

Siri is the first step in taking the digital assistant out of sci-fi and into reality. iMessage bypasses the exorbitant carrier text charges and brings iOS users, all over the world, one step closer to BBM-like instant messaging. Notification Center finally brings iOS alerts out of the dark ages. Newsstand put most of our newspapers and magazines all in one place. PC-free along with Wi-Fi sync cuts the cord to iTunes and takes us to the iCloud, where all our data gets stored and pushed and backed up. Reminders brings task management to iOS. The camera app is now fast to access and faster to take shots with.

While there will always be features we wish for next time, from message previews to fast text response to themes to a whole lot more, this year, these are your choices.

Vote up top and tell us why you voted they way you did in the comments! These are your awards, so get to it!

iPhone 4S two months later

The iPhone 4S has been on the market for two months now so it's time for us -- your TiPb and Mobile Nations editors, writers, and podcasters -- to take a second look at it. Has it lived up to our expectations? Has our appreciation for the iPhone 4S grown deeper with time, or is the honeymoon over and the initial sheen long since worn off? Apple typically only releases one new iPhone a year, so how it holds up over time -- especially when competing devices seem to drop daily by the dozen -- is an especially important consideration.

If you're still the considering the iPhone 4S, if you're still on the fence, check out the material below and then read on for our re-review, 2 months later.

Siri used to control home television set

With rumors ramping up of a Siri-controlled Apple television coming from Apple, Todd Treece was able to beat them to the punch and get Siri to fully control his television set using an Arduino IR remote setup and SiriProxy.

We've seen Siri do amazing things like start your car and control your home thermostat using SiriProxy as well, but this setup actually shows the power of having Siri used as a remote control for your TV.
