Apple's push-to-talk Siri vs. Google's always-listening Now: Which is better?

Apple's push-to-talk Siri vs. Google's always-listening Now: Which is better?

With iOS 7.1 Apple's added a new feature to Siri, their personal digital assistant — the ability to manually control how long Siri listens. The concept is remarkably similar to the old push-to-talk systems, just hold down the Home button, start talking, and then let go of the Home button and Siri...

Do you really use Siri?

When Siri was introduced with iOS 5 on the iPhone 4S there was plenty of jokes made about the integration but just like iOS, Siri has grown quite a bit since the initial release. With that growth came a lot of new feature additions and improvements to Siri. It's a bit hard to gauge how many...

How to manually control when Siri listens to you with iOS 7.1

Ever had a time where you're using Siri and your iPhone or iPad doesn't stop listening when you want it to? Wither the Siri API?

Wither the Siri API?

In 2011 Apple introduced Siri, their virtual personal assistant, with the iPhone 4s, and two years and two versions of iOS later, including this year's iOS 7, and no public application programming interfaces (API) have been surfaced for developers. That means customers like you and me still can't...

Siri: How far has it come in two years, and how far does it still have to go?

Siri provided a glimpse into an entirely new realm of human interface, and while it's now delivering more than ever before, it still faces significant, and lingering, challenges for the future A year ago I wrote about the challenges facing Siri and Apple's services. Over the last 12 months,...

Control Siri with just your mind, Project Black Mirror can do just that

If you want to stop talking to Siri and just use your mind to ask it to do things, that possibility may have just become a step closer to reality. A couple of guys decided as a hobby, to tinker around with an iPhone 4S and some ECG (Electrocardiogram) pads. The ECG pads take brain wave patterns and translate them into synthesized speech. The speech is then directed through the 3.5mm headset jack and Siri hears it and acts on the command. The engineers working on “Project Black Mirror” have been able to link 25 brain wave patterns to Siri commands.

UK voice of Siri didn’t know Apple has used him until he saw the TV commercial

The provider of the voice for the UK version of Siri has been revealed and what makes the story even more intriguing is the fact that the guy who provided all the sounds didn’t even know it was him until he saw Apple's commercial. The voice, known as “Daniel”, was provided by former technology journalist Jon Briggs; but it was not provided directly to Apple. The voice over work was originally done six years ago for a company called Scansoft which was later purchased by Nuance, which subsequently licensed it to Apple.

iPhone 4S has extra infrared sensor for Siri raise-to-speak

If you have been wondering how Siri reacts so quickly when you "raise to speak", the answer is a tiny infrared LED that's added into the proximity sensor in the iPhone 4S. iFixIt discovered the sensor after a second look, determining that it shines brightly whenever the screen is activated. The light isn't visible to the human eye but it's there. And it's constantly letting Siri know how close your face is to your iPhone 4S.

Siri iPhone 3GS proof-of-concept port shown off

Thanks to chpwn and Steve Stroughton-Smith, Ryan Petrich has successfully shown off a proof-of-concept Siri port on iPhone 3GS. It doesn't work as well as the iPhone 4 port, mind you, but that's easily overshadowed by the sheer coolness factor.

No word on how or when, if ever, this will come to an iPhone 3GS near you. Whether due to beta-status, server load, Nuance licensing restrictions, or simple product differentiation, Apple has chosen to keep Siri exclusive to the iPhone 4S

Siri down for you?

We're getting a bunch of emails and tweets asking if Siri is down for anyone else, so we're guessing the answer to that is -- yes, yes it is. It's still working for some of us, mind you, and Siri has been up and down intermittently, and a often, since launch, but this once again seems to be more widespread than normal.

So you know the drill -- let us know if Siri is down for you, and if so, where you are, how long it's been down for, and when it goes back up.

Siri hack now fully working on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch [video]

Siri has now been fully hacked onto an iPhone 4 and iPod touch and it now communicates with Apple’s servers to provide a 100% working solution. We told you a few weeks back that developer Steve Troughton-Smith was working on hacking Siri onto an iPhone 4 but had run into one or two hurdles. Well the main hurdle involved getting the hacked iPhone 4 to talk to Apple’s servers. That has now been overcome and it is now looking like a real possibility.

More Siri-powered Apple television set rumors

Nick Bilton of The New York Times has some quasi-informed, semi-speculative guesses concerning Apple and a potentially Siri powered television set in the future.

Several people, all speaking on condition of anonymity for obvious reasons, told me that nothing was actively being built, but — and this was a big but — I was told repeatedly that Apple would eventually make a television. “Absolutely, it is a guaranteed product for Apple,” I was told by one individual. “Steve thinks the industry is totally broken.”
