Steve Jobs: Apple to add AirPlay video to Safari, App Store apps in 2011

Steve Jobs: Apple to update AirPlay for iPad, iPhone in 2011

According to another purported email response from Steve Jobs, the AirPlay feature introduced in iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad should be updated in 2011:

The question:

Hi, I recently updated both my iPhone 4 and iPad to 4.2. I think my favourite feature is airplay. This is seriously amazing and makes sharing content seamless. I just purchased Apple TV and was wondering are you ever going to make airplay video work for videos in safari and 3rd party apps? I hope to get a response. :)

The Steve Jobs reply:

Yep, hope to add these features to Airplay in 2011.

While most of us wanted AirPlay to support anything that used the standard iOS video controller, the current implementation is severely limited, providing audio-only streaming options for the most part, with video available only from the built-in iPod app (and Video app on iPod touch and iPad), and YouTube app.

This limitation has been removed for developers via one line of code and for Jailbreakers via AirVideoEnabler, so it would be outstanding to see Apple fix it out of the box for everyone.

Unfortunately, 2011 is a ways away still, and kind of puts the kibosh on rumors of an iOS 4.3 update in December (unless that's really only to support subscription newspapers for iPad).

VIdeo of AirPlay in action after the break... If you've tried out -- or have been waiting to try out -- AirPlay streaming to Apple TV, let us know your thoughts!

There won't be a 4.3 update in December. If that message is legit, Steve only said he HOPES to add them in 2011. My guess is that the issue isnt technical.

2011 could be iOS 5 with the iPhone 5. No thanks, I want it much sooner than that...

Jesse says:

AirPlay is cool, but being limited to youtube and ipod apps kinda blows. I installed airvideoenabler, but I haven't found an app that it adds anything to. StreamToMe allows for audio but thats it. The people behind DisplayOut and the airvideoenabler should work a hack together.

@Matthew - sjobs@apple.com, I believe
I don't have a new TV, so I don't care that much about the AirPlay functionality. What I really want is AirPlay to Mac. Right now I'm sitting in front of an iMac; I'd love to be able to open up iPod and start some music from my iPhone while I'm in the garage. When I come inside and sit down, I'd like to be able to seamlessly stream it to my Mac.
While I'm at it, I'd like an elephant for Xmas. And the ability to AirPlay the entire screen, ie play Angry Birds on my iPhone and let my friends watch on the TV. Oh, and a unicorn. Yep, if I get one, the others are right around the corner.

I know that you can enable airplay for all apps with just one line of code, but that doesn't mean the code is tested and up to Apple's QA standards. I know people want to make a big deal that it takes two seconds to enable but this makes those not familiar withthe development process that Apple is being lazy or there's some conspiracy afoot. This is a common practice for developers to hid functionality simply because it's not ready for prime time. It's easier to hide it and if you enable it, it's on you to make it work, no support for you!
Now I'm not saying there isn't a conspiracy or that apple is being lazy, just that emphasizing "one line of code" is not evidence that they are.

Airplay and AirPrint as is now is weak sauce even Steve knows it. Hasn't anyone notice the the theme yet? Hype everybody up and then partially release the product. Same with the App store, Push, Multasting etc.

desjones4ever says:

That's all well and good but what needs to be addressed is NOTIFICATIONS! it just has to be a better way to incorporate it.

Can we get the same capabilities for OSX?

spanishcop says:

Just let me airplay my damn videos from my picture library or make my videos on my iPhone 4 go to my video library in the iPod app sO I can instantly airplay what I recorded on my iPhone. The rest can come in 2011... How this option could not been included already is beyond me.

@ trevor
Download the remote app and it can do what your asking without airplay. Right?!?
