Apple A5

TiPb Answers: Apple A5 chip -- what we know and what we guess

Just like the original iPad debuted with an Apple A4 chip, iPad 2 is coming with an Apple A5 chip. What does that mean? In typical fashion Apple has been short on details saying only that it's dual-core, 1GHz, 2x faster for computational tasks and 9x faster for graphics, all while preserving the 10 hour battery life that made the A4 famous. They don't think we need to worry about what CPU or GPU they're using and how much RAM is on board to let that power breathe. But here's the thing -- many of us want to know exactly that.

This is the chip that will also power the 2011 iPhone 5, iPod touch 5, and Apple TV. We want answers. We can handle answers! So... stick with us after the break for everything we know about the new Apple A5 chip... and what we can guess.

TiPb TV 14: iPad 2 rumor boogaloo

The iPad 2 is almost certainly coming this spring and the rumors just won't stop! Will it or won't it have a Retina Display, will there be a Verizon model or a combo model, will it have a bunch of new ports? And most importantly -- will it be smaller and lighter with less bezel?! Those are the questions we're getting asked the most often these days and they're the topic for today's episode of TiPb TV!

We cover the pros of staying 1x with 1024x768, going for it at 2x with 2048x1536 and the cons of trying to do anything in between. We wonder if that new Qualcomm GSM/CDMA chipset could join a super sweet Apple A5 processor inside iPad 2. We talk about Apple taking their Camera Kit and VGA adapter and whether they'd ever really build them into SD card, USB and MiniDisplay ports that some users may just never use.

And then I tell Rene he's wrong about there being no changes coming to the iPad bezel. (Apple better back me up on that!)

Check out the video above and then let us know what you want from Apple in iPad 2 -- and what you absolutely don't want!

Regarding an Apple A5 chipset for iPhone 5, iPad 2

Last year Apple introduced their own 1Ghz Apple A4 system-on-chip (SoC) alongside the iPad and if recent rumors are to be believed we might just see the next generation -- perhaps called Apple A5 -- this year alongside iPad 2.

While Apple has never released the component specs for the Apple A4, it's accepted as being an Apple designed, Samsung fabricated ARM Cortex A8 CPU with Imagination PowerVR SGX GPU. That combination was fast on the iPhone 3GS and it was even faster, thanks in part to Intrisity's clock-speed know how, on iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and Apple TV (2010). So what would an Apple A5 look like?
