Apple updates Apple TV to iOS 5.1.1 (software 5.0.1)

Apple has pushed out Apple TV software version 5.0.1 (4224), aka iOS 5.1.1 (9B206f). The update applies to both the 2010 Apple TV (720p) and 2012 Apple TV (1080p). No new features are shown following the update, and no new services seem to have been added, so this could well be a bug fix and performance enhancement release.

The fine folks from Fircore have been working on a new update to aTV Flash (black) for jailbroken AppleTV's and have now released it as v1.3.

Apple TV hacked to run iOS apps

iOS and jailbreak developers Steven Troughton-Smith and Nick, who goes by the Twitter handle @TheMudkip, have hacked together a working window manager for Apple TV, paving the way for the possibility of iPhone and iPad app compatibility on the non-touchscreen device.

I rewrote SpringBoard from scratch using only QuartzCore. MobileX isn't linked against UIKit.

[The control scheme involves] remote events from an iPad. Or a cursor controlled by an apple remote.

Seas0nPass jailbreak updated for Apple TV 4.4.4, now untethered

If you've been hanging onto older software on your Apple TV 2 for fear of losing your Jailbreak or simply not wanting a tethered solution, then the day has come where you no longer need to worry about that. The fine folks from Firecore have updated Seas0nPass to make use of @pod2g's latest work and as such -- now have a untethered jailbreak of the latest 4.4.4 (iOS 5.0.1) AppleTV software. Apple TV software update 4.4.4 now available

Apple has updated the 2nd-generation Apple TV software to version 4.4.4, which includes general performances and stability improvements and a fix related to an issue that displayed an error when attempting to play certain types of video content.

The new software update comes just a month after their 4.4.3 update, which added support for Netflix streaming in Mexico as well as addressing an audio problem when playing sound through the optical port when your television set is turned off, and carries a new build number (9A406a).

Apple arming Made For iPhone accessory makers with new Bluetooth authentication protocol

Japanese news site Macotakara (translated) reported last week that Apple has supplied Made For iPhone accessory makers with a new authentication chip using Bluetooth 4.0 and the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol, making it easier to setup and authenticate devices for use over the dock connector and Bluetooth with a specific push for fitness and health-related apps.

Rumor: Discounted Apple TV 2 leads to Apple TV 3 speculation

Some major retailers seem to be selling the Apple TV 2 at a discount, leading 9to5Mac and TechCrunch to speculate a new model may be incoming and soon.

It's also being tagged as the 2010 Apple TV, leading to further speculation a 2011 model is nigh, though I think the Apple TV 2 has been referred to as Apple TV (2010) almost from launch to differentiate it from the original, non-iOS model.

Seas0nPass jailbreak updated for Apple TV 4.3

If you currently jailbreak your Apple TV 2, you may have held off from applying the recent Apple software update to avoid losing your jailbreak. The good news is, Seas0nPass has now been updated to support an untethered jailbreak with the latest iOS 4.3 for Apple Tv 2. Thrown into the update is a new version of fireCore's Media Player which allows you to playback many more media formats with a whole host of options.
