Seas0nPass, the popular jailbreak tool for the 2010 Apple TV (720p) has just received an update that will allow it to jailbreak the latest Apple TV software. Apple has just released the Apple TV software update taking it to version 5.0.1; it is actually version 5.1.1 inline with other iOS devices but Apple still files the version numbers differently for whatever reason. Unfortunately the jailbreak is a tethered type which means if your device needs to be rebooted, it will need to be plugged into a PC or Mac as part of the reboot process.

Seas0nPass 0.8.4 released. Adds [tethered] support for ver. 5.0.1 (iOS 5.1.1) on ATV2. ATV3 update still in progress

Unfortunately there is still no sign of a jailbreak for the 2012 Apple TV (1080p), that is still in progress and must be proving a little tricky as its taking quite a while to get out. Strangely enough, the lack of an Apple TV (1080p) jailbreak is pushing the resale value of the Apple TV (720p) up to nearly double its original price in some cases. eBay has been awash with them recently and they appear to be selling for much more than their original price.

If you have a 2010 Apple TV (720p) and need help jailbreaking it, be sure to check out our full how-to guide.

The Apple TV remote that comes with the latest Apple TV 2 is very small and can be very easily misplaced or lost completely. Luckily, Apple has included a very easy way for you to use a third-party remote control as an alternative. Sure you could use your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad and the Apple Remote app but if you don’t want your kids, friends, or spouses, bugging you every time they need to change something on the Apple TV, you'll want something dedicated.

Here's how to set it up, and you should do it now before you lose your current remote.

Power on your Apple TV

Go to Settings in the main menu

Click on General and then Remote

Choose Learn Remote

Select Start

Apple TV will display icons that represent the six buttons on the Apple Remote with the "Up" or "+" button highlighted first.

Using your third-party remote, press and hold the button you would like to use to control the "up" function until the blue progress bar is full as shown below.

Apple TV will then select the next button function. Repeat the above step using a different button

After you have programmed all six button functions, you can now use your third-party remote to control Apple TV. You can optionally setup specific playback buttons for Fast-forward, Rewind, Next chapter, and more.

If you see the "Button Already Learned" error message, this means one of the following:

A different, previously learned remote, has a learned button with the same IR code as the current button that you are trying to program.

A previously learned button of the current remote has the same IR code as the current button that you are trying to program.

Either use a different button or delete the previously learned remote if it is not being used.

That is all there is to it, a very easy way to use a third-party remote as a backup for your Apple TV remote!

FireCore has announced a major update to its aTV Flash (black) software that runs on jailbroken second generation Apple TV’s. The update (beta 7) now includes music playback, cloud backup and even Last.fm powered artist slideshows.

A new music player has been built into Media Player, which allows you to stream most music file types from a Mac, PC or NAS drive without using iTunes. During playback, album art, track info, and artist images will automatically be downloaded from Last.fm. Artist images are used in slideshows that can be viewed while music is playing in the background. Support for folder playlists is also included.

New cloud backup feature that provides a way to easily backup all your 3rd party (FireCore, XBMC, Plex, etc...) settings and data to the cloud. Once backed up, a list of your previously saved backups will be available allowing you to to easily restore one of them if needed. Backups are stored securely in the cloud and will remain linked to the AppleTV's serial number - this means they will always be available even if you update or restore your AppleTV.

Media Player now features three distinct options for viewing different types of metadata. The the left (<<) and right (>>) buttons can be used to cycle through the views when browsing through your media.

If you’re already running a version of aTV Flash (black) the new Beta 7 version can be installed through the Maintenance –> Manage Extras menu on your Apple TV.

Does anyone still jailbreak their Apple TV? What is the main reason you do it?

If the above screenshot really is an internal document via AT&T, there's some doubt as to whether or not AT&T is going to have any white iPhones on stock for launch day (or in the coming days after). This document seems to have leaked over at modmyi.com. TiPb aren't too sure whether or not this is a hoax (maybe just to scare Leanna). We'd assume at least the Apple stores will carry the white models. Seeing as this is an AT&T internal document, we don't see this holding any bearing on what Apple will have at launch.

Maybe Apple is keeping the white iPhones as of now in order to keep their stores in stock until more shipments are pushed out? Even if that were the case, I'd still find that a bit odd. Pre-ordering starts tomorrow so we should find out either way. We're going to see what we can find out on AT&T's end. BGR has stated AT&T declines to comment and are now reporting the same thing may be happening in Germany as well (and we saw Softbank in Japan announce black-only earlier today). They seem to think this may very well be the case. Until we find out more, I'd take this one with a grain of salt, and definitely wouldn't extend this to what will happen in the Apple stores on June 24th. What do you guys think?

So we've got it on authority that the second-gen iPhone is already well into testing, and numerous units are floating around in super secret pockets. A trusted source got a chance to check one out.

According to Engadget's source, the iPhone 3G is roughly the same size and shape, has GPS for realz, the glossy black backing we see in the pic, chromed up volume buttons, no removable battery ('natch), flush(!) headphone jack, same screens size and resolution (what? where's my Nano-res 200dpi 640x480?!)

July is rumored, but who outside the jobspod knows for sure?
