Aluminum choice being blamed for delays with iPhone 5 availability

The decision to go with aluminum in the latest iPhone 5 is now being blamed for the poor availability and shipping times. The iPhone 5 has been on sale for just over two weeks now and Apple is still quoting availability for new devices at the time of writing of 3-4 weeks. According to a report by Bloomberg, the reason for the slow availability is all down to quality control problems with the aluminum used in the banding around the iPhone 5 and the back cover.

Facebook has reportedly had their iPad app ready to go for some time and may have been planning its announcement around Apple's Lets Talk iPhone event this past Tuesday. Same goes for their iOS web platform Project Spartan. Robert Scoble suggested last night that Steve Jobs passing may have had something to do with Facebook's non-announcement.

There have always been a few white iPhone 4 in the wild, Apple employees in Cupertino the likely suspects, or high profile celebrity friends like Stephen Fry, or even low-profile friends far from the spotlight. Some have been caught on camera, some have been sent in as quiet tips. The only thing that hasn't been seen is the white iPhone 4 generally available for sale online or in stores.

Orange says no white iPhone 4 in the UK before end of year

While Apple has said the white iPhone 4 was being delayed until later this year, Orange is now emailing UK customers to tell them that pretty much means end of the year.

We wanted to let you know that there won’t be any white iPhone 4’s in the UK until the end of the year.

Many of us were disappointed when June 15th arrived and the white iPhone was not available for pre-order or reservation. The day before the launch of the iPhone 4, Apple provided a vague explanation claiming that the white iPhone 4 had "proven more challenging to manufacture than expected." It turns out that this manufacturing problem comes from Lens Technology, Apple's glass supplier.

On the cusp of iPhone 4's official rollout tomorrow, Apple has issued a statement about why the white model, introduced alongside the black by Steve Jobs at WWDC 2010, hasn't yet been made available to order:

White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

So, anyone going to wait for white?
