A few days ago Wizards of the Coast made the D&D Basic Rules available as a free download in PDF format. For anyone who ever played Dungeons & Dragons in any of its incarnations, from Gary Gygax to TSR to now, from Greyhawk to Dragonlance to Forgotten Realms, to — well, you get the idea — the potential fun to be had is obvious. Best of all, you can download the straight into Apple's iBooks app if you'd like, or any other PDF-friendly app you might have installed on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Best old-school-style role playing games for the Mac

Adventure and role playing games have always been a part of computer games. They started as text-based adventures like the original Colossal Cave. Rogue introduced a graphical twist, and Wizardry pushed the boundaries even further during the salad days of the Apple II. Dungeons & Dragons: Arena of War coming soon to iPhone and iPad

The nerdtastic delights of the Dungeons & Dragons universe will soon be coming to the iPhone and iPad in the free-to-play title, Arena of War. Early registrations for the game – which will also be available on Android – over at the official website, will receive an exclusive character upgrade once the game launches later this year.
