Best Twitter apps for iPhone

Twitter has changed. It's no longer the domain of nerds and conferences but now serves the mainstream, not to mention pop stars with tens of millions of followers. Twitter's official app has changed with it, altering the way everything from the timeline to direct messages work and are surfaced. It's not what it once was, and its certainly not for everyone. Luckily many really good Twitter app alternatives also call the App Store home. And that's a very good thing, because many people use Twitter very differently. For some, it's just a way to follow celebrities or keep up with news. For others, its a virtual water cooler to chat around during work breaks. For yet others, it's a network to expand their social connections and market their wares. Different apps suit different use-cases. So if you're only interested in the best iPhone apps where Twitter is concerned, these are the ones we'd recommend!

It has taken me so long to write up my most used apps of 2011 because - how was I supposed to choose just five apps? However, I've managed to narrow it down. My first home screen page is dedicated to my most used apps. This list isn't in any particular, so here we go!

Top 5 Twitter apps for iPhone

TiPb checks out the best, most must-have Twitter apps (that aren't Twitter) to load up on your iPhone

Twitter for iPhone recently updated to include a rather annoying and intrusive Quick Bar that has outraged most of its users. So much so, that it has been coined as #dickbar. One solution is to jailbreak and install Twizzler, a tweek that'll remove the trending bar from the Twitter app. However, for those of us who are devout members of #TeamPure, we must look towards other Twitter apps.

Follow along for TiPb's top 5 Twitter apps (not including Twitter's official app)!

Updated: Twitter suspends UberMedia clients for privacy, monetization, and trademark violations

Twitter recently suspended all Twitter clients supported by Ubermedia. Among the clients suspended are Twidroid and UberTwitter, which are both insanely popular on Android OS and Blackberry OS. They also operate and support the popular TweetDeck client which is available on iOS and several other platforms. They've also acquired Echofon, another popular Twitter client for iOS.

According to Twitter, they've been working with UberMedia since April of 2010 when they were operating under the name TweetUp, which also apparently violated some copyright issues. Currently Twitter is claiming that Ubermedia has changed the content of tweets in order to generate revenue for themselves. They've also pulled the clients due to privacy issues concerning direct messages over 140 characters.

When asked about the suspension, Twitter spokeswoman Carolyn Penner had this to say:

We ask all developers in Twitter ecosystem to abide by a simple set of rules that are in the interests of our users, as well as the health and vitality of the platform as a whole.

We often take actions to enforce these rules; in fact, on an average day we turn off more than one hundred services that violate our API rules of the road. This keeps the ecosystem fair for everyone.

Some of the allegations being held against UberMedia are pretty serious. For the full letter Ubermedia received, hit the break!
