Greenpois0n RC5, the latest Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, has been updated to version 2, which should fix some of the issues users have been experiencing. Mainly the issue where your jailbreak will just sit at “Greenpois0n Initialized”. Hopefully this version will take care of that bug. I know a few people have been having issues even loading Greenpois0n.com. There are also several mirrors available, so keep checking the comments for the latest on those.

Also, some users have been noting that their Cydia icon is completely missing or they can’t get Cydia to install. You can alternately use redsn0w RC8 to install Cydia. Basically use Greenpois0n to jailbreak untethered and then run redsn0w just to install Cydia.

Let us know in the comments if the second version of Greenpois0n is working any better for you! If you need instructions on jailbreaking under iOS 4.2.1, check out our how to jailbreak via Greenpois0n walkthrough and if you need more help, our Jailbreak Forum.

[greenpois0n.com via (iPhone Download Blog - they also have a list of mirrors]

iOS 4.2 isn’t installing on iPhone for some developers if our email box and a quick search of Twitter are any indication.

It sounds like the install starts fine but then has problems during the baseband update and spits out an error code 10. That’s hook it up to Xcode and restore to 4.1 language.

That’s also why it’s a beta for developers, folks, not for production devices.

UPDATE: @Justin_Horn from WhenWillApple and the TiPb iPhone Forums gives us the answer:

There are issues updating iPhone 4 with iTunes, need to use new SDK and non-preview version of Xcode to update.

So update those first.

[Twitter search, thanks angry complaining devs!]

Suffering from a FaceTime “waiting for activation” error? So was I. The one thing I wanted to try most on my new Canadian iPhone 4 was FaceTime. I’ve made no secret about being jealous of Chad and Leanna, so the instant iPhone 4 was in my hand and on Wi-Fi I went to hit the FaceTime button and… found no button. I checked my Settings immediately and saw, under the FaceTime on/off toggle the chillingly cryptic words: waiting for activation. What the h3ll?

To make matters worse, Rene’s was working fine. Intolerable!

Now FaceTime functions over Wi-Fi but it uses your phone number to identify and connect with other iPhone 4 users. Since my carrier, Fido was — of course — having problems during the iPhone 4 launch, with some people having to wait up to 24hrs for their SIM to work, I immediately thought they might be the culprit. I also did the usual trouble-shooting steps of reseting the network connections, turning my iPhone 4 on and off, removing and replacing my SIM, and even did a full restore. No luck. My phone and SMS were working fine, so Fido was looking like less of a culprit. Unfortunately.

So off to the Apple Store I went. It was the day after launch and they were still packed but the manager heard my plight, found me someone to help, and they immediately escalated me to an iPhone genius-type-person. He told me I needed the Fido 7.2 carrier update. It downloads over the air (OTA) but you can help it along by going to the Settings, General, About page and waiting a few moments.

Next he took me through a few easy steps:

We went on Wi-Fi

We did a hard power down (holding down sleep + home until the power off slider appeared).

We rebooted.

And voila, the buttons popped up and I was able to make my first FaceTime call!

If you’re having the same “waiting for activation” error, try the steps above and let me know how they work for you.

UPDATE: Fourth time was the charm! Download finished quickly and update took under 10 minutes. What’s in it so far? Commenter Sarah Healey, below, says support for the additional carriers

UPDATE: Fourth time was the charm! Download finished quickly and update took under 10 minutes. What’s in it so far? Commenter Sarah Healey, below, says support for the additional carriers coming on line this week, which we should have expected (thanks!), Craig Hockenberry on the Twitter says an iPod Touch/Xcode glitch was corrected for devs, and iLounge says “update all” is gone from the App Store. Oh, and, some 3G bugs might have been squashed…

No sooner had Dieter broken the story about the immanent iPhone 2.0.2 firmware drop, then I tried to download the sucker and update. And got nothing because Dieter had said 5pm and it was only 4:45. D’oh. Tried again at 5pm. Still nothing. 5:09, however, and BOOM! Update engines fired on full. 248.7MB of “Bug Fix” goodness began to flow down my slow, expensive, likely throttled Canadian cable pipe.

Or so I hoped. Seems the Lords of Kobol hate me. (Or at least the Lords of Cupertino as transfered by the intertubes and, ultimately, Videotron). My download generated an unknown error (-3256).

Tried again, same result.

Anyone else experiencing this?
