Facebook app updated with free calling to U.S., Canada

Facebook for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad has been updated to version 5.5. New features include an improved button design, intended to make commenting, liking, and sharing easier on News Feed posts, and the inclusion of free VoIP calls for users in the U.S. and Canada, something previously introduced in the separate Facebook Messenger app.

VoIP requires Wi-Fi or cellular data. And, of course, reports of bugginess are already coming in... If you've tried out the latest Facebook update, let me know how it's working for you. If you haven't tried Facebook for iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad yet, grab it from the App Store via the link below.

Facebook app crashing for some users

My Twitter stream is being swamped by people claiming the iOS Facebook app is crashing for them today. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the recent iOS 6.0.1 or iOS 6.1 beta 1 firmwares either, and people who haven't gone near either of those are reporting the problem. It also doesn't seem to be a problem for everyone, as other people are saying they're just fine.

Facebook 5.0 brings faster, better, stronger native app to iPhone and iPad

Facebook has just released the highly anticipated new version of Facebook for iPhone and Facebook for iPad, a update they've promised would make it better, faster, and stronger than ever before. That's important because Facebook has always been one of the most popular apps on iOS, yet has also been plagued by bugs and other problems unbecoming one of the largest companies in the world. And here's how Facebook's aimed to make it right:

Facebook adds "Find Friends Nearby"

For those for whom Facebook pretty much is the internet, and sharing location with friends is more positive than negative, the social network's new Find Friends Nearby feature is sure to be an impromptu party hit.

TechCrunch got the early word on it, and Facebook engineer Ryan Patterson gave them the background.

I built Find Friends Nearby with another engineer for a hackathon project. While it was originally called ‘Friendshake’, we settled on ‘Find Friends Nearby’ for launch (the URL was a little bit of a homage to the previous iteration).

Why Facebook and other apps sometimes say "Cleaning..."

With iOS 5 it's not uncommon to sometimes see the label under many apps, including Facebook, sometimes change to read "Cleaning..." This is a feature of iOS 5 that Apple hasn't really explained, so it's caused a lot of you to write in an ask about it. Here's the deal...

Basically, that's iOS 5 deleting cache and temporary files so that when iCloud or iTunes does a backup of your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, that backup is smaller and faster.

Facebook for iPhone bugs: Pictures showing up wrong

On the current version of Facebook for iPhone and iPad, whenever I tap on a picture someone uploaded, it either brings up a totally different picture, or when I flip over to comments, they don't match the comments that go with that specific picture. It's incredibly annoying if you want to comment on a picture and can't even get the correct one to pull up.

If you use Facebook for iPhone or iPad you're probably aware that it doesn't come without a bug or two. This one we've had several readers report and it's something I've experienced myself since the newer revamped version of Facebook was released.

The only workaround I've found is to actually go in and open the album the picture is in and click on the picture in the grid of photos. That typically tends to load the correct image and bypass the issue.

Facebook unveils major changes at f8 conference

During Facebook's annual f8 conference today CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed an all-new, completely redesigned profile including the "Timeline" to better describe who you are and what you're interested in. Facebook will also introduce better app integration across the platform and we'll be seeing changes to the "Like" button as well.

So what are these changes all about and how soon can we expect to see them hit the iPhone app?
