FlickStackr for iPad is a Flickr browsing application. The interface is beautiful, intuitive, and a pleasure to use.

With FlickStackr, you can browse photos on Flickr, even if you don't have a Flickr account. If you do, then you can also browse your photostream, sets, favorites, groups, and contacts. FlickStackr also displays EXIF data, tags, and comments. The main feature that is missing from FlickStackr is the ability to upload photos. However, iPont promises to bring that ability in a future update.

In addition to the wonderful online photo viewing that FlickStacker brings to iPad, it also allows you to save photos locally for offline viewing. iPont calls this feature a "Stack". You can choose any photos from Flickr to save to your stack. It only saves the actual images, however, not the EXIF data that's associated with them.

FlickStackr is an excellent app for experiencing Flickr on the iPad, and for only $0.99, it's quite a steal!

[$0.99 - iTunes Link]

Pros

Browse photos from photostream, sets, contacts, groups, explore, or search

View photos as slideshow

No account required

Support for multiple accounts

Offline viewing in your "Stack"

Wonderful interface

Cons

Cannot upload photos

Offline viewing does not include EXIF data

The iPhone has a built in camera and with its always-on internet connectivity, it's a great way to share your pictures with friends, families, colleagues, and the world.

Send via mail. The classic iPhone way to send photos is through email. Just choose a picture, multi-select up to five and tap Share, or copy and paste a dozen or so right into the body of your message and send away. (Pro tip: the share button compresses your photos into smaller files for easier transport, pasting them in keeps them in full size for higher quality). This is also great if you're sharing with someone who has a computer, since Windows, Mac, Linux, Unix -- almost everything! -- has an email client to receive them.

Send via MMS. Yes, the iPhone finally has MMS so the same way you send photo via mail you can now send them via the Messages SMS/MMS app as well. This is the best option if you're sending to another phone, especially a feature phone that doesn't have email.

Upload them to galleries. The iPhone will let you upload to Apple's own (subscription required) MobileMe gallery. You can also upload to the popular Flickr site, and there are (of course) apps for that.

Post them to a social network. If one-to-one is too few, and one-to-many sounds more like it, you can share your photos with your friends, your followers, or the whole wide world through your favorite social networks. Facebook is obviously huge here, with the app letting you upload and comment (when it works!) on photos. Thanks to integration with TwitPics and other, similar services, many popular Twitter clients like Twitterrific, Tweetie, TwitBit, etc. let you post pictures to your Twitter timeline for your followers to enjoy (and tweet back about).

Hand them your iPhone. And for your non-computer friends, you can just launch the Photo app and pass them your iPhone. The modern equivalent of sneaker-net, after a few moments even your least tech-savvy family member will be swiping, pinching, and otherwise enjoying your camera work right into the palm of their hand.

The iPhone and Facebook and Twitter go together like chocolate and peanut butter but just like there are a lot of tasty desert combinations, there's a lot of ways to keep up with your social networks on the go:

The web. Hey, it's where most social networks started and because the iPhone has the excellent Mobile Safari web browser, you can just point it towards facebook.com, twitter.com (or any other social-network.com) and get your status on. Both Facebook and Twitter provide iPhone-optimized versions of their websites as well, though you can tap-through to the full sites.

App Store apps like the official Facebook app [Free - iTunes link] or any of the excellent 3rd party Twitter apps. The Facebook app really came into its own with version 3.0. Version 3.1 added the much-requested push notifications, though it brought with it numerous, aggravating bugs... Twitter clients on the other hand are many and varied, from the write-centric Birdhouse [$1.99 - iTunes link] to the read-centric Reportage [$1.99 - iTunes link], with the uber-popular Tweetie [$2.99 - iTunes link] and Twitterrific [Free or $4.99 - iTunes link], and push-centric TwitBit [Free or $2.99 - iTunes link] and many others making us the envy of the platform space.

And with either of those options there's still several things you can do with them:

Share your status. Telling your friends who you're with, what you're watching, where you're going, why you're ticked off, and how it's all some other friend's fault is probably the oldest, most common use of social networks. There are even apps like qStatus [$0.99 - iTunes link] that specialize in updating them.

Share your photos. Flickr uploads, Twitter pics, Facebook galleries -- people like to show other people their family, funny, even freaky photos and social networks make it easy. Sure you can email a photo to a few people, but you can post it to as many friends as you have

Share your gaming. "I just walked 3 meters and fell to my grisly death in..." is all over our social status' thanks to games that offer built-in auto-Tweet and auto-Facebook options. Whether it's for your crops, your castle, your drag-race, your FPS, or any other of a dozen games in a dozen genres, they can instantly let al your friends hear you brag (or complain!)

Combine your logins. Facebook Connect and Twitter's login services let you use your existing social network ID at a variety of other sites, either add-on services/apps to Facebook or Twitter, or other social networks. Hey, some people don't want to have to remember multiple user names and passwords, you know?

We'd love Facebook to fix the 3.1 trunk, we'd love Twitter to add an official push-API, and we'd love Apple to let us multitask them all, but the iPhone remains a premiere platform for social networking and we've only just scratched the surface. Web or App, and what for? Tell us -- how you use your iPhone to keep up with your social networks? (And if you don't use social networks at all, let us know why not!)

Tapped on App Store and what did I see? Updates for Tweetie, Loopt, Foursquare, and Flickr -- and a couple of those say iPhone OS 3.2 (aka iPad) right there in the What's New listing. (Yeah, that doesn't mean 3.2 is coming to the iPhone or these are 1024x768 versions, likely just that they're built using that SDK for maximum blackboxing on the iPad).

Tweetie [$2.99 - iTunes link] has just hit version 2.1.1 and brings iPhone OS 3.2 compatibility(!), Foursquare (4sq.com) integration, Vodpod video uploads, Post 'message' parameter to TwitPic, and Instapaper Mobilizer. See our previous Tweetie coverage for more on the app.

Loopt [Free - iTunes link] expands the product’s Pulse feature to include tens of thousands of local events, and allows check-in to events, public Tips, and the ability to RSVP to events posted on Facebook. It's also got you covered for SXSW, and adds content from SonicLiving, Zvents and Metromix.

Foursquare [Free - iTunes link] brings a whole new look and feel (see below), faster, better checkin, and categories for Places view. Also, it has history for Places, and uses Tweetie-style pull-to-refresh.

Flickr [Free - iTunes link] iPhone OS 3.2 support (!)

Yahoo! has (finally!) released an official Flickr app (free - iTunes link) for the iPhone and iPod touch, and... Dunno. I'm not a big Flicker user. So, I haven't really formed much of an opinion about the official Flickr app. Leanna, who does use Flickr, liked the homepage (it has a nice Ken Burns-style pan and zoom animation) but felt the rest was underdeveloped and was surprise to see it didn't add "taken with iPhone" (or other, proper, device attribution).

Note: the app, of course, is rated 12+ because, also of course, someone might accitentionally type "nudie pics" in the search bar. (Likely violence abounds as well, as do lego vikings!).

If anyone else has had a chance to test drive it and has an opinion to share, let us know in the comments. Despite -- in spite? -- of Yahoo's travails of late, Flickr is still a monster of a site and it's nice to see it show up and represent on the iPhone -- given the iPhone is its most popular camera and all...

It was just over a year ago that the iPhone became the undisputed champion of cell phone cameras on Flickr. Without a doubt, the modern day cell phone camera has become a serious photographic tool and thanks to the release of iPhone 3GS, the iPhone has stepped into 1st place in upload popularity of all cameras just ahead of Cannon's Digital Rebel XTi.

Now we all are aware that the three megapixel camera on the iPhone 3GS is not the best out there but it does it's job fairly well. The main reason for it's popularity on Flickr is convenience. Not only do you carry your iPhone everywhere you go, unlike a regular camera, you also have the ability to upload directly from the device. Convenience reigns supreme.

It was only a matter of time before iPhone was crowned the undisputed overall champion of the Flickr world.

We've discussed before how, quality not withstanding, the iPhone is Flickr's most popular camera. We've also seen the reach and immediacy of Twitter report and engage with news around the world faster and from more perspectives than traditional corporate news machines have ever been able to do. What happens when these new media devices and networks meet? Maybe what was discussed in Leo Laporte's Macworld 2009 feature presentation.

Paradigms shift. It happened with telegraph, with radio, with television, with satellite... is it happening again with the iPhone and Twitter?

Well, it lost that title for a brief moment and only re-gained it recently. I'm only guessing but it probably had to do with the 3 million iPhone 3Gs that took the market by storm. Either way, the iPhone being the King of Flickr should force Apple to take notice and improve the camera already.

Where's my auto-focus, zoom, better resolution, better lens, video, etc. !? I think Apple is severely underestimating the appeal of a great camera. Hopefully, they'll recognize the iPhone Camera's limitation and create an industry-leading device. We here at TiPb like to dream big.

What do you think?

Are you one of those people who love Flickr? The ease-of-use, best-in-class community, and (for pro users) unlimited storage space? Well I actually am one of those people. I love my Flickr. And the iPhone plays really nice with Flickr in part because of Flickr’s ability to upload pictures through E-mail. Take a picture. E-mail to Flickr. And it’s posted.

But for jailbroken iPhones there is another method that is in ways much more integrated. This Week's Native App-a-Week will take a look at this program, iFlickr. iFlickr is a native app that is dedicated for Flickr uploads. Meaning you take pictures for the pure purpose of posting it to your Flickr account. How does it work? Is it more effective than the current iPhone Camera->E-mail->Flickr set up?

Read on for the rest of the review!

How To Install

iFlickr is available through the AppTapp Official Source and is listed under Multimedia. A quick search in Installer.app for iFlickr should yield desired results.

Design/Interface

Launching iFlickr opens up a Camera-like interface. At first glance, one wouldn’t notice much visual difference from the iPhone’s Camera but upon closer inspection, little details like the top status bar still being visible and the hue for the camera button is different.

The interface is simple and easy to use. Simply set-up your Flickr account, which is a cinch, and start snapping away. You have a choice of whether to save photos to your photo roll or just simply upload to Flickr. After you snap the picture, you are prompted with basic options: Send to Flickr, Add Details…, Email Photo, and Cancel—all of which are self explanatory.

Usability

iFlickr is as easy to use as the Camera application on your iPhone. Snap a picture and if you don't want to add any details, simply click Send to Flickr and you’re done. I was somewhat disappointed that iFlickr didn’t offer the ‘whoosh’ I enjoy so much and instead chose to replace it with a ‘Processing…’ sign. The overall speed in uploading with iFlickr is noticeably faster. You can easily save 5-10 seconds (depending on your network) using iFlickr as opposed to the E-mail process.

The benefits of using iFlickr as opposed to using the iPhone’s E-mail photo process is that iFlickr allows the original sized images to be uploaded to Flickr. Whereas the iPhone’s E-mail interface limits you to 640x480 sized photos, photos uploaded using iFlickr can retain its original size (1600x1200). Adding titles, descriptions, and tags are made possible through the ‘Add Details…’ button. Sadly, there isn’t a way to add your photos to a set.

Criticism

However, iFlickr isn’t without its faults. Every picture that isn’t properly Titled, Described, and Tagged would have the iFlickr branding on it. This is so because iFlickr auto-fills these areas with their own stock titles and description (title: iFlickr, description: Taken with my iPhone - uploaded with iFlickr). This is highly annoying because pictures become a walking advertisement for iFlickr. I would prefer if iFlickr left the fields blank for me to edit later instead of automatically reverting my fields to iFlickr-oriented labels.

Also, the ‘geolocation’ feature in iFlickr is a downright lie. I live in Los Angeles. Every picture I have taken using iFlickr has been automatically mapped to Lebanon, Kansas. I’ve never even heard of Lebanon, Kansas! I also couldn’t turn off the geolocation feature in the settings, so I guess I have to deal with being from Lebanon, Kansas.

Final Thoughts

Other than posting your pictures to Flickr, iFlickr doesn’t do much else. Its E-mail photo option is essentially useless because it severely limits the size of the picture being sent, much more so than the iPhone’s own E-mail function. For non-Flickr users, this native app will have absolutely no use to them.

The program is limited in the sense that it only sets out to do one thing—Upload full size images to Flickr. And it does it well—the whole process is much quicker and efficient than the iPhone's E-mail interface. With that said, iFlickr can still improve by stopping the autofill of descriptions and fixing the Lebanon, Kansas geotagging issue. If those issues were resolved, I would absolutely use it more frequently because of its ability to upload full resolution pictures. But in the mean time, the negatives have proven to be much too annoying for me. I'll stick with the iPhone's E-mail interface for the time being.
