Front Facing Camera

Biometric facial recognition security coming to iPhone via Cydia mod [Jailbreak]

Ever wanted to unlock your iPhone simply by having it look at you and recognize who you are? A jailbreak mod called RecognizeMe will be hitting Cydia soon and promises to bring biometric facial recognition security to the iPhone 4. The mod will allow you to unlock your iPhone by scanning your facial features with the front-facing camera and verifying who you are before giving you access.

The tweak offers settings for dialing up the level of security (facial matching), which we're assuming requires a bit more processing time, but the app definitely appears to deliver on its promise of facial recognition security for the iPhone 4. The mod looks a little slow at the moment, but hopefully the developers are able to optimize the code before an official release.

Check out the video after the jump, and let us know what you think in the comments!

iPod touch 4 parts hint at front FaceTime camera?

We just saw a case that hinted at a new rear camera on iPod touch 4, now images from a parts supplier show what looks like a front, FaceTime camera hole.

this part is clearly marked as an Apple part "Apple (c) 2010". This stamp is visible in the full resolution image. The part is also stamped with April 29, 2010, indicating that the build date is relatively recent.

iChatr brings "chat-roulette" action to iPhone 4

Want to chat with random strangers via your iPhone 4 front-facing camera, and expose yourself to every hope and horror that entails? Well, yeah, you guessed it -- there's now an app for that (and we're guessing, like LED flashlights, there'll be many soon enough).

Given the demographics you're more likely to end up face-to-facing a pant-less Mosspuppet than an anything-less Angelina Jolie, but you launch your app and you take your chances, and you can always swipe to go to someone else.

Speaking of iPod touch G4 part leaks: Front facing camera?

No sooner does speculation start about the iPod touch G4 than parts are spotted sporting a suspiciously front-facing camera-like hole.

Been wanting in on the FaceTime action but haven't pulled the trigger on an iPhone 4? September/October may bring you your second iOS option.

iPhone 4 preview

Everything you need to know about Apple's new iPhone 4

iPhone 4 is the most significant hardware revision to Apple's widescreen iPod, breakthrough internet communicator, and phone since the original iPhone 2G was released in 2007. But how significant is it? Apple CEO Steve Jobs said there were over 100 new features and singled out 8 for special attention. We'll take the most interesting of both and see just how important they are, after the break.

(For more on the software, see our massive iOS 4 feature walkthrough).

UPDATED: 4th Gen iPhone HD to Launch June 22, have Apple chipset, 960x640 display, front-facing camera, multitasking

Daring Fireball often blurs the line between carefully concealed wink-nudge leak and flat out facetious commentary, so with that in mind John Gruber has this to say about the 4th generation iPhone (which still won't be called iPhone 4G!):

Apple Patents Google Latitude-like Service for iPhone... with Front Facing Camera?

Did Apple reject Google Latitude from the App Store because they're getting ready to launch a similar service of their own... that also uses a front-facing camera? Maybe, maybe not, but Patently Apple found this latest application, and 9to5mac seems to think it's a possibility:
