A newly discovered timestamp security bug may leave your iOS device photos exposed regardless of whether or not your device is passcode locked. Ade Barkah, a Canadian tech consultant, has figured out that changing the time on your device will leave any photo taken in the “future” accessible via the quick camera toggle on the home screen.

The quick toggle is a new feature in iOS 5 that allows you to double tap your home button to access your camera app. From there you can tap into your image gallery. If your device is passcode locked, you will receive a message asking you to unlock your device to view photos. Unless you change the time on your device. Anything taken after that time stamp will be viewable as the phone will assume nothing exists after that point in time.

Turns out Apple’s restriction is just a simple filter based on the timestamp when the Camera app was invoked. You’re allowed to see all images with a timestamp greater than this invocation time. Yet that leads to an immediate hole: if your iPhone’s clock ever rolls back, then all images with timestamps newer than your iPhone’s clock will be viewable from your locked phone.

This could be a potential issue for anyone that travels frequently or has a need to change timezones. You can test this by simply changing the time and popping into your quick toggle even when the device is locked. Better get to deleting those inappropriate pictures!

There’s bound to be something new in iOS 5 beta 3, a new icon, a new screen, a new setting… something that shows what Apple has been up to. Already the internet and our inboxes are filling up. A lot of it is, frankly, stuff we think we’ve seen before in previous betas, but some of it looks new to us as well.

• New location services opt-in/opt-out splash screen on setup
• Settings control for system-level location services (similar to what was previously available for App Store apps)
• Settings control to toggle status bar icon for location services on/off
• New iTunes Wi-Fi sync splash screen
• New icon for Reminders
• Some new stuff with tones (not sure about it yet)Text tones can be set from iTunes ringtones

For some strange reason, our tip box is now overflowing with 960×640 screenshots (what, no iPad love?) showing a few changes from today’s iOS 5 beta 2 release. Among the more interesting ones:

• Welcome screen now has an info button to give you your UDID number, should you have failed to record it previously (Thanks Apple!)
• The iCloud icon in settings is no longer purple. Long live brush metal cone fill!
• Lock screen notifications get a new, single pop up. You can pull down the full list if you like, and if you get multiple notifications, they start to stack again like they did previously.
• Wi-Fi sync in now working, but you need to be connected to a power source.
• iCloud has bumped Exchange from the top spot in mail account setup, while MobileMe has been condemned to the bottom.

You’ve already sent us one set of iOS 5 beta screenshots, and you just keep them coming. So here we are with round 2, and here’s what they show:

You’re flooding us with screen shots of iOS 5 (sometimes without removing your personal info first — please do that!), and we’re going to keep adding them here. Here’s some of what we’re seeing:

• iPod app is dead. Long live Music and Video apps. (More consistent with iPad, iPod touch.)
• Tap and hold a lock screen notification icon, then slide to view it
• If you hate the new style notifications, you can turn them off or switch back to the old popups
• You can update more than one app at once
• The square toggle sliders are round now
• There’s a “buy more storage” button in iCloud
• There’s a wireless iTunes sync setting
• Calendar now has week view in landscape mode
• Move Camera Roll photos to existing albums or create new ones
• Add multiple Twitter accounts in Settings
• Storage usage by app
• On-device software updates
• Open Safari links in background
• SMS/iMessage are the same app, sends depending on what receiver can handle (AT&T/Verizon must hate that)

And here’s the white iPhone 4 gallery, also 10 months in the making. We’ve got it side-by-side with the black iPhone 4, focusing on whatever little details and differences we could find. There looks to be an almost translucent edging around every seem. The proximity sensor is white-free, and while my black iPhone 4 (bought back in July) shows no sign of it, my white iPhone 4 has bright, visible light coming out of the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The iPad 2 is here! You’ve run down the specs – including the 2x as fast A5 processor, the lighter 1.33lb weight, and the crazy-thin .34 inch “thickness.” You’ve considered whether it’s worth it for iPad 2 owners to upgrade. You’ve taken a look at what’s new in iOS 4.3. Heck, you’ve even read up on how to transfer your data from your original iPad to the iPad 2. What’s left to do? Check out TiPb breathlessly unpacking and examining the real deal.

If you waited in line today and picked one up – congrats! If you are wondering what we think of Apple’s latest, here’s the short version: it’s a thinner, lighter, faster iPad with a couple of cameras. That may sound anti-climactic – but after using the iPad 2 for just a very short while we’re starting to suspect that it’s anti-climactic in the same way that “the iPad is just a big iPhone” was anti-climactic in 2010. In other words: it’s an experience that can’t quite be quantified but gets under your skin in the same way the original iPad did. There’s “nothing new” here to most people, but the execution of all the little details adds up to something pretty special.

As far as the hardware is concerned, we’re impressed. Looking at the spec differences between the iPad 1 and the iPad 2, you might be tempted to say that there’s not much improvement here. But .5″ vs .34″ only tells part of the story. The full story is that the tapered back of the iPad 2 makes it feel thinner than any device this size has a right to be. It’s kind of amazing. Unfortunately, we can’t quite say the same for the weight – while the iPad 2 is lighter, it’s still not something you’re going to happily hold at arm’s length unsupported for any appreciable length of time.

iPhone 4. Nexus S. There’s probably more to say about the differences than the similarities. Different operating systems? Check. Don’t work with 3G on the same networks? Check. Different screen sizes? Check. Different philosophy and methodology towards multitasking? Check. Different video conferencing solutions (insofar as few to none work yet on the Nexus S)? Check.

The list goes on, but we’re sort of guessing that for most the choice between the Nexus S and the iPhone 4 will be determined by carrier choice and OS preference more than whether Android’s latest can go head-to-head with Steve Jobs’ glass-encased wonderphone.

All that shouldn’t stop you from hitting us after the break for a photo fight between the iPhone 4 and the Nexus S – with some extra attention paid to how the iPhone still has the best music player around while Android’s just-released Google Maps 5.0 makes iOS’s version look a little lacking.

As with all iTunes music sold post-Macworld 2009, The Beatles songs are in iTunes Plus format, meaning higher, 256 kbps AAC format and no DRM (though they are likely watermarked with the purchasing iTunes ID account).

All of the albums come in iTunes LP format which means you can go into a rich, HTML 5 interface to listen to the songs, browse through pictures, and watch mini documentaries. While that currently looks great on iTunes on Windows or Mac, the continued lack of support on iOS — iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple TV is disheartening. I imagine Steve Jobs invented this technology so he could lean back against the foot of his bed, iPad in hand, iTunes LP on screen, and swipe through the Beatles artwork while losing the afternoon to their music. We all want it. Let’s make it happen.

MacRumors scores yet more evidence Apple might just be considering adding a free level of MobileMe service for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad owners on iOS 4.2.

The evidence comes in the form of a new private framework known as AppleAccounts.framework that includes a series of device-specific error messages referring to free MobileMe accounts. In particular, the error messages include alerts regarding having reached “the maximum number of free accounts” for a given device and certain devices not being “qualified for free MobileMe service”.

It looks like email won’t be going free but Find my iPhone, Gallery, and sync services just might be. Interestingly, that matches what we saw on Me.com a couple weeks ago — Find my iPhone and Gallery being listed as no-subscription required apps.

Anyone starting to believe?

Apple TV (2010) is small. When you consider how much space the internal power brick takes up, it’s positively tiny. Here’s a look at it compared to the original Apple TV, the iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and iPod nano (2010). Did we say it’s tiny yet?

We’ve also included a bunch of shots of the interface so you can how similar, and yet different it is from the original Apple TV, and from the other iOS devices.

iOS 4.2 will bring Game Center to iPad and yes, it will take advantage of the full screen. You’ll get a double column-view instead of single like on iPad, and that means your lists (like friends) will on the left and the detail view (like stats) will be on the right.

What’s interesting is that beta 1 currently shows a number of icon-shaped outlines “dealt” card-like across Game Center’s game table like UI. They don’t show any apps yet, but tapping them does indeed take you to the App Store, and each one to a different game.

UPDATE: The outlines are now icons. Looks like they it just took a while to fully populate them.

Everything else looks to be there and be fully operational, from achievements to leaderboards to games.

November can’t come fast enough.

iPod nano fashion? I was more than excited when Steve Jobs announced the new iPod nano. Not because I am a huge music lover but because of the multitude of different ways that I could use it. This new iPod nano is a tech geek girls fashion dream come true.

Follow along after the break to see just some of the ways I’ve been accessorizing with the new iPod nano, and how well it’s been working out.

This may be more of a dream than a reality. I found that if you use the iPod nano all alone in your hair it is prone to slipping out. If you are going to put it in your hair it is much more secure if you attach it to a hair elastic. It was already slipping out before I even began to walk around. I think if Apple has added a bit of rubber to the edges of the clip it would be much more secure. Steve why did you let me down!

Wearing the iPod nano in your hair is quite cute but lacks the functionality of being able to actually see the new 1.5-inch screen. If you already have a playlist playing and are comfortable using the headset remote buttons to play, pause, and change, its ok but still not ideal. It was quite secure though. You could even go jogging and have them stay in place.

The iPod nano is just screaming to be used as a watch. It is the perfect size and with a multitude of different functions it may be the first in a new smart watch generation. Get real iOS and and App Store onto this bad boy and there’d be no stopping us. For the band I use a tight fitting bracelet which is not too thick. This way the clasp on the iPod Nano is able to fully close. I also really liked attaching the iPod nano to my hair elastic. It was quite secure and comfortable.

Yes the new iPod nano are very capable of being used as earrings. It is easy to use some two part epoxy and attach a loop and then a regular fishhook earring holder. It is a bit heavy for an earring (though I have worn heavier). It would also present the same issue of not being able to easily change your application or music. For the picture I just clipped the nano right onto my ear, this was not the most comfortable of ways to wear it, however, nor was it very secure.

This is one of my favourite ways to wear the iPod nano. It makes a beautiful show piece and is very user friendly. It is also very beautiful and when I go around people just think it is another piece of jewelry. Then I turn it on and everyone is left in awe.

Just got my hands on an iPod touch 4 here at TiPb actual, and immediately I pulled out the iPhone 4 and iPad for a little versus action.

After a few hiccups, Ping, Apple’s new social music network, is up and running on iOS 4 devices. Yesterday we took a quick look at how Ping worked in iTunes 10 and while computers have some advantages, I think I’m preferring it on iPhone right now.

Putting it in the iOS iTunes app is strange of course, until you realize Ping exists primarily to encourage people to buy more iTunes music, so having all those shopping carts handy is in Apple’s best interests. I’m not convinced it’s in mine, especially since load times in iTunes have never been as snappy as they feel in the dedicated Twitter or Facebook apps. And since the outer chrome has to include ways of moving to different iTunes store content, they can’t be used to make navigating Ping any easier (not that there’s much to navigate yet).

Lastly, while it still doesn’t look like anyone but recording artists can share real status or post pics or video, we dull normals can share music, like activities, and comment on likes.

iTunes 10 is slowly, painfully going live right now and if you manage to download it, you can set up Apple’s new social music network, Ping. I’ve done that (you can find me here), and hooked it up with Facebook Connect, and…

Meh. Unless I’m missing something fairly major, it looks like only the Lady GaGa’s of the world (i.e recording artists) can share status, pictures, and videos, and get comments. The rest of us can find and follow friends, share musical tastes and buy concert tickets, but not much else.

With iPhone OS 4 beta 4 Apple has brought over some of the iPad wallpapers and introduced a few new ones, all seemingly focused on livening up the home screen without being too visually distracting. Natural textures and muted patterns get an obvious focus here with stones, rocks, and textiles front and center.

And yes, you can still set backgrounds independently for the lock screen and home screen.

Dieter has his Google/HTC Android Nexus One here at CES, which means we grabbed it, put it next to our signature Apple iPhone 3GS, and took tons of pics.

First impressions: killer Google services. Killer. Solid hardware. Still Android OS 2.x, so while powerful and flexible, it hasn’t reached the user experience level of the iPhone OS yet. Nor media, of course. And it’s still not as fluid. On a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor. Really? But voice to search, launch, and type? Right back at killer.

The iPhone has made it’s first big, official splash at CES 2010, courtesy of the iLounge Pavilion, set up by the fine folks at iLounge. I’ve only spent half a day walking around so far, but you can’t throw an iPhone without hitting a major player at a big booth showing off some amazing new iPhone accessories.

Here’s a quick rundown of what I’ve seen so far:

• Etymotic, well known for their high-end in-ear headsets has incorporated the 3-button iPhone/iPod-style controller onto their cables giving you full volume, pause/play, etc. They’re also offering an entry-level model without the same system, but with excellent sound quality.
• HyperMac is offering a new external batteries with USB-out for iPhone.
• ExtremeMac is doing a range of charging as well, lots of options.
• Seidio is bringing the vibrant colored case love.
• Case-mate is offering a design-it-yourself option for cases, also a no-squirt-liquid-required body skin, and Hug, a non-proprietary inductive charging solution where you can buy their case and pad, or from another member of the consortium so you can mix and match. Nissan cup holders will also support it!
• Gelaskins is bringing in National Geographic and Marvel Comics licenses.
• Music skins is bringing Beatles licenses.
• Otterbox is offering lighter, but still armor-like solutions for those who want a little more convenience.
• Incipio is going with multiple materials and bold designs.

Apple TV 3.0 (or Apple TV 3, or Apple TV Take 3) is the just-released third version of Apple’s and Steve Jobs’ “hobby”. And, for good or for ill, its latest feature-set seems designed to keep iTunes’ living room gateway as niche as ever. That’s not to say it isn’t good, because it is (though it does have problems we’ll get into below), but it’s certainly not great. Not yet. And we’re beginning to wonder if Apple (now or ever) even wants it to be?

Preamble 1

Yes, this is an iPhone blog, but just as other SPE Network sites like WMExperts will touch on the big Microsoft picture and Android Central will keep its electric eyes on Google, TiPb tries to include everything Apple that connects to the iPhone ecosystem. So you won’t find a review of the latest Mac Pro, you will find one of the pocketable iPhone’s big screen cousin, the Apple TV. If your interests lie elsewhere, just skip on to the next post. If you are interested, however, follow on after the jump for more!

Preamble 2

I’ve had an Apple TV since version 1.x and I use it every day. For me it’s part of the Apple/iPhone ecosystem and it “just works” to let me use the same music and video on my iPhone and on my TV (and in iTunes on my PC). My living room setup is a 1080p LCD with 7.1 surround (which I put together as cheaply as possible — check out this forum post for more), which I use Apple’s Remote app to control the Apple TV with my iPhone or iPod touch.

Long ago, I ripped every DVD I owned to iTunes format, and whenever I find a movie or TV series I love on sale at Amazon or elsewhere, I buy it, rip it to a Drobo, and box ye old physical media as backup. I also buy via iTunes, especially when they have their sales. I’m exploring going all in on PVR’ing content as well, but I’ll save the rant on how Canada has no consumer protection when it comes to telecommunications, and Canadians have no access to CableCard, mandated unencrypted OTA broadcast signals, etc.

All this by way of saying I have a lot of content and I watch it via my Apple TV a lot, and so the Apple TV 3.0 update is something I take seriously. Apple… well, we’ll see…

Software not Hardware

Apple TV 3.0 is, sadly, a software only update. There’s no new Apple TV gear to go buy. No better chips, no bigger capacity, no added features like TV tuners or 1080p out. If you haven’t bought one before, it’s cheaper than it was a few months ago, but it’s not better. That’s a far bigger problem at this point than the software.

New Look, Tweaked Feel

The user interface for Apple TV 3.0 has been refreshed — at least on the top level. Now, instead of just two vertical menus, a horizontal menu cuts across the top showing off poster/album art for your content. The spots on the left are, refreshingly, reserved for your own media — your most recently added movies, TV shows, music, podcasts, etc. I count 5 spots on mine. The spots on the right show stuff Apple would like you to buy from the iTunes Store. Yeah, it’s like that — Apple TV remains a hard-sell for purchases and rentals. It’s not as bad as it used to be — they’ve even moved your content above store content in the menus, but it’s still the overall purpose of the device. Then again, online rentals seem to be the future of the set-top box, so fair enough…

LP and Extras

One of the major reasons cited for the Apple TV 3.0 update was to add compatibility for iTunes LP and iTunes Extras. If you already have either or both, iTunes will download new versions of the content (?!), but once done, they look great. Extras present similarly to DVD extras, however the interface for the one we tested — Wall-E — was very un-Apple. It wasn’t clear where to click or when. Choosing one option left that option highlighted when, in order to actually use it, we had to navigate over to the artwork, and then notice the dots beneath the artwork denoting a number of different elements to that content. Apple usually nails this stuff, but we’ll test a few more and hope very hard it was an isolated accident.

Note: there aren’t very many iTunes LP and iTunes Extra offerings yet, barely a dozen of each, but expanding it to the Apple TV is a good sign Apple is making at least another “hobby” out of it. We’ll see how well it plays out.

Also note: Are we waiting on iPhone 3.2 so we can get those extras on the mobile screen as well? Sure would be nice to have them if we got them…

Final Thoughts

Apple TV Take 3 it certainly isn’t. Only its elegance, simplicity, and seamless integration for iTunes users makes it a valid alternative against Windows 7 Media Center or competing set-top boxes that offer Netflix (for those in the US) or XVID/DIVX/MKV (for those who get their content… elsewhere).

That, however, is exactly how Apple has positioned it. Want a DVD option? get a Mac Mini. Want portability, get the AV cables with an iPhone or iPod touch. Want to take iTunes content and splash it on your big screen, there’s an Apple TV for that. For now. But “hobbies” only last for so long. If Apple doesn’t make a serious run at “business” with a proper 3.0 (or 4.0 we guess) and updated hardware, we’re guessing it will dwindle into “canceled” before long. And that would be a shame.

Running 2.1 (5F136) now, and here’s what we’re noticing: WiFi works fine (tried on Apple and Linksys routers). New icons for connection type (3G/Edge) in the top bar. New blue filled and half-filled dots to describe state of video and podcasts (watched/listened to). Genius Playlists don’t seem to work as well as iTunes 8, at least for me, with lots of songs coming back as “not related”.

We’ll update this post as we discover more (sadly, doesn’t look like cut/copy/paste to turn-by-turn this go around!). What have you found so far? Any surprises?

Out of the closest iPhone lover Paul Thurrott of the Supersite for Windows got his beige-boxy hands on pre-release version of the iPhone 2.0 software update and the pre-requisite iTunes 7.7 software, and ran the upgrade process through its paces.

His verdict?

[Installing the 2.0 upgrade] is a multi-step and time-consuming process but is largely hands-off. [...] There’s a new App Store icon on the home screen, for example, and the Mail application includes prominent links to Microsoft Exchange and MobileMe account types. [...] The old iPod Games entry in the Source list [of iTunes 7.7] has changed to App Store, for example, though selecting it now, before the July 11 launch, displays only whatever iPod Games you’ve purchased. [...] I’ll have a lot more to say about this impressive upgrade in the weeks ahead. So far, so good.
