When Chevy finally launched the Volt plug-in hybrid electric car, they also kicked out an app with in-car communications and monitoring subsidiary OnStar to integrate owners’ mobile phones with the vehicle. Similar to the MyFord Mobile app that Ford put out to integrate with their own Focus Electric, OnStar RemoteLink being shown off at CES 2012 hooks into the OnStar system onboard the vehicle, allowing the owner to remotely monitor the fuel levels, and in the case of the Volt, also check in on how the battery is charging, plus set off-peak charging schedule. RemoteLink also can plan routing on the phone and send it remotely to the car, saving you time the time of generally tedious address inputting when in the car.

The OnStar App is available for iPhone and Android phones and is compatible with most 2010-and-newer GM vehicles with OnStar.

Apple has announced that it intends to reset developer iCloud Backup data on Thursday, September 22nd. The announcement was made on the Apple Developer Boards. The reason may be that Apple is getting ready to release the iOS 5 GM.

On Thursday, September 22, the iCloud Backup data will be reset. Backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup will be unavailable from 9 AM PDT – 5 PM PDT. If you attempt a backup or restore during this time, you will receive an alert that the backup or restore was not successful. After this reset, you will be unable to restore from any backup created prior to September 22. A full backup will happen automatically the next time your device backs up to iCloud.

GM stands for Gold Master and should be the final release of the iOS 5 software before it is made publically available. This could be as early as the first week of October along with the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s.

Apple has posted the iOS 4.3 GM (gold master) build 8F190 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch on their developer portal. While Apple TV was included in the iOS 4.3 betas, no GM has been posted for it at this time.

Unless there is a show-stopper level bug found in the GM, this is likely the same build that will be released to the public on March 11 alongside the iPad 2 in the US.

For more, see our iOS 4.3 walkthrough and if you spot anything new, let us know!

UPDATE: Yes, multitasking gestures are still in iOS 4.3 for iPad. You need to go to Xcode, click “enable for development”, enter your dev credentials, and then Gestures will show up in Settings. Apple likely wants developers to keep testing them but don’t think they’re ready for consumers yet.

iOS 4.2 GM was originally released a couple weeks ago leading to speculation that a general public release was coming soon. However, last Friday Apple instead released a second iOS 4.2 GM for iPad, and now with a 4.2.1 GM it’s anyone’s guess what the internal schedule looks like (or why the update servers are going up and down today!).

We keep getting asked if there will be a difference between the iOS 4 GM (gold master) seed released to developers at WWDC 2010 and the final GA (general availability)

We keep getting asked if there will be a difference between the iOS 4 GM (gold master) seed released to developers at WWDC 2010 and the final GA (general availability) version that’ll be released to end users sometime today.

Maybe. Other than the former being intended for developers and the latter for end-users, we don’t know though we guess they’ll be fairly close (so apps developed under the GM don’t run into problems under the GA). Apple could have found and patched a few trivial bugs, removed debug code, or made a few non-app impacting tweaks. The GM seed may also be read differently in iTunes and not prompt for future updates (i.e. 4.0.1, 4.1, etc.) the way the final release will. Or they could be binary identical.

Until Apple releases it and elite code scourers do their thing, there’s just no way to know.

(And if you don’t know what anything in this post means — we envy you. You shouldn’t have to).

UPDATED: Well, Game Center is gone in the release version, which was to be expected since it was a developer preview. Notice anything else?

This was accomplished by using some hackery along with the Dev Teams’s existing Pwnagetool.

The Dev Team has stated that they do have a working jailbreak for the final iOS 4 but we will not see that until June 21st or shortly there after so it may be wise to hold off on this particular hack. But if you are feeling brave and just have to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS running the iOS 4 GM then feel free to give it a try using these directions here.

Apple has announced as part of their WWDC 2010 keynote that iOS 4 (previously iPhone OS 4) will go Gold Master (GM) today. That means devs should be able to get it via developer.apple.com and begin testing their apps for release… alongside the new iPhone 4.

More as this develops!

According to Silicon Valley Insider and a anonymous tipster, Apple COO Tim Cook may be leaving Apple to take the spot of CEO at General Motors.

“[Interim GM CEO Edward E. Whitacre] wants the candidate to come from a company known for operational excellence, innovation and customer satisfaction and in addition he is looking for someone that has turnaround experience. It also doesn’t hurt that [Tim] has been able to work with Jobs. Whitacre does want to stay on as Chairman. Also, Cook has been the key link to AT&T and should understand the culture that Whitacre, [a former AT&T CEO] built.”

Of course this information is coming from an unknown source and should be taken with a Hummer-sized grain of salt, but it does make sense that GM would be going after Cook as they need all the help they can get. But if you consider how well of a job Cook did stepping in for Steve Jobs during his medical leave and then throw in the fact Cook made a cool 12 million in doing so… we’d have to say he is next in line to take over as CEO of Apple when Steve decides to step down. Would you trade that for GM?

So again, this is all speculation but we will keep you informed if anything else does turn up.

Previously twice rumored and now recently made real during the WWDC 2009, iPhone 3.0 GM (gold master) sees the on-device iTunes app, which previously added the ability to download video podcasts in iPhone 2.2, round out its content with movies, TV shows, music videos, iTunes U, and audio books.

To make room, the tabs at the bottom lose Top Tens and Downloads and now include Videos (movies, TV, music video) and a standard More icon, which gives access to a screen offering Audio Books and iTunes U, as well as the displaced Downloads and relocated Redeem (for gift certificate codes).

Like with the iPod App, an Edit button lets you drag around tab icons to lay things out just the way you want them. Also, like with video podcasts, music, and App Store apps, 3G isn’t an option for anything over 10MB — which for video we imagine will be almost everything — so have your Wi-Fi standing by.

More pics after the break…

Apple has made the GM (gold master), or final version of iPhone 3.0 available to developers via developer.apple.com in advance of June 17th public release.

Apple VP of iPhone Software, Scott Forstall, reminded developers to download it, test against it, and if their apps didn’t work, to get updates done and fast!

WARNING updated: yeah, we got the full text and it applies only as outlined in the comments below. Thanks everyone, we try to err on the side of caution. Luckily devs had access to correct info.

If you’re not a legit developer who needs this now, more than ever — stay away!
