Google Apps and Gmail experiencing outages. Zombie apocalypse still not nigh.

Looks like Google Apps and Gmail are having some issues today, with tons of you telling us you're experiencing problems of one type or another. For my part, I'm getting authentication errors, but then I use Gmail in Mail.app. Yeah. Google Apps Status Dashboard is showing it's not us, it's them.

How to setup Google Gmail on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

As of January 30, 2013, Google will no longer allow new iPhones, iPod touches, iPads, or other devices to be setup using Google Sync (their implementation of Microsoft's excellent ActiveSync protocol). While existing Google Sync setups will keep working, the next time you want to add Gmail to a device, you'll have to use something else -- namely Google's eccentric IMAP service, which works with Apple's Mail app and allows for a unifed inbox with other, non-Gmail accounts, and the Gmail app, which is excellent but is a silo unto itself.

How Google got their design together on iOS

There's an argument to be made that one of the best Google phones on the planet right now is the iPhone 5. Over the last few months Google has been rolling out better looking and more functional iPhone and iPad apps. From Google+ to Gmail, Google Maps to YouTube, Chrome to Google Drive, they've introduced a more consistent, more usable, more human experience on iOS -- arguably even more so in some ways than what they offer on their own, competing platform, Android. Gmail for iPhone and iPad gets redesigned, adds multiple account support, more

Gmail for iPhone and iPad has been updated with a completely new design and, multiple account support, and more. This update comes only 5 months since Google's acquisition of Sparrow and it's pretty clear that the Sparrow guys have been hard at work with Gmail's new app. For the first time, I'm able to say that the official Gmail app for iPhone and iPad is really great.

Google updates Gmail and Chrome for iPhone and iPad

This week, Google pushed out updates to both Gmail and Chrome for iPhone and iPad. Chrome's update was fairly minor, resolving compatibility issues with certain websites including Yahoo! Mail and fixing a few bugs. Gmail's update wasn't too groundbreaking either, but the addition of the option to open web links in Chrome (if installed) is excellent for Chrome users.

Google says they're investigating "mail service imap.gmail.com is not responding" errors, no word on all the other errors...

Apparently more Apple users than usual are having trouble with Google's Gmail service over IMAP today, specifically a “mail service imap.gmail.com is not responding" error. Google's aware of the problem and looking into it, and in the meantime have posted some quasi helpful tips on minimizing the chances you Gmail will simply error-out on iOS. Personally, I'd recommend switching to Gmail over Exchange ActiveSync, but if you're a die-hard IMAP lover, you can check them out and hope for the best...
