Absinthe, the untethered jailbreak utility for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S has been updated to version 0.4 bringing compatibility with Leopard as well as a few other bug fixes.

• Mac: added support for OSX 10.5, PPC and Intel CPU
• added consistency check on startup to make sure required files are in place
• Windows: fixed bug in payload generator that might cause a crash

If you are already jailbroken on iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 on your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 there isn’t a need to re-jailbreak with the latest update. This update seems to address issues with the process itself opposed with issues on board the device.

In any case, it’s good to see the jailbreak “dream team” hard at work to bring Absinthe to more users after it saw wide adoption after initial release.

We finally got an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 yesterday via Greenpois0n Absinthe. Until now the tool was only released for Mac users. It has now been updated with support for Windows users.

For some it will be a no-brainer. The untethered jailbreak of the iPhone 4S has been their holy grail, the thing they’ve been waiting for, the thing that will complete them and make their iPhone 4S finally, fully functional the way an end user intends.

Others feel iOS 5 copied so many basic jailbreak features, including and especially notifications, that there’s no need to bother with jailbreak anymore. Apple has you covered.

The Chronic Dev Team has decided to come out and issue a small update on its ongoing work on the iPad 2 jailbreak and iOS 4.3.x update. After the recent news that posixninja had recently said that the iPad 2 jailbreak would be “coming in weeks”, the Chronic Dev Team plan on holding him to that.

As I’m sure many people have heard, Josh (posixninja) has recently been quoted saying the iPad 2 jailbreak is coming in “weeks”, I know I have been very publicly abrasive and non-commital on giving any kind of timeframe or comment on this matter, but at the behest of Josh (in conjunction with his need for a swift kick to the ass for motivation) we’re ALL going to hold him to that!!! I’m not going to get into extensive detail about this, but what I will say one of the missing puzzle pieces may have reared its head and cast a glance in our direction… take from that what you will.

It has now become possible to easily update and execute a workflow to enable RC6.2 (tentatively speaking… mmm #dirt) to be released “soon”…

Our newest jailbreak ninja, Cody, recently let you know how to untethered jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 via redsn0w but since then, how has it been? I personally haven’t had time to upgrade to iOS 4.3.1 and re-jailbreak. Cody however has voiced that he has had a lot more springboard crashes than he did under the previous iOS 4.2.1 greenpois0n jailbreak.

Most jailbreakers are aware that not all apps are compatible with a new jailbreak, so outside of those causing issues, are any of you experiencing issues? Cody and a couple readers have wrote in to let me know that they’ve experienced some safe mode crashes and reboots under iOS 4.3.1.

If you have issues, let us know in the the poll and/or in the comments as well as checking out our TiPb jailbreak forums to see what issues other members are experiencing and if they’ve found any ways around them.

If you launch iBooks on a Jailbroken iPhone there’s a good chance you’ll get an error message and not be able to open any of your legitimately purchased iBooks content. This is NOT a new problem — many of us here at TiPb have been having this issue for a while and with older versions of iBooks. Some thought it was a bug with iBooks or an issue with certain releases of redsn0w or greenpois0n Jailbreak tools, but iPhone dev-team member @comex finally figured out what was causing it.

It seems that before opening a DRMed book, iBooks drops an improperly signed binary, tries to execute it, and if it works concludes that the device is jailbroken and refuses to open the book.

This is what the binary does:

int main() { return 42; }

The complete message you get is:

There is a problem with the configuration of your iPhone. Please restore with iTunes and reinstall iBooks.

If you do restore your iPhone you will, of course, lose your Jailbreak. If you’re an avid iBooks user and can’t live it without it that’s a choice you’ll have to make. Why Apple is only choosing to do this with iBooks and not other iTunes content, like media and apps is unknown.

Again, this is not a new problem but with iOS 4.2.1 getting an untethered Jailbreak courtesy of greenpois0n (and iOS 4.2.6 for the Verizon iPhone), it’s probably something more and more people have noticed and been complaining about. Hopefully the Jailbreak community comes up with a fix, otherwise Apple and iBooks might lose a lot of #TeamJailbreak customers to Amazon’s Kindle store…

greenpois0n, the Jailbreak that supports iOS 4.2.1 untethered for iPhone, iPod touch, and ipad, has just gone into RC 6 and now also supports Apple TV untethered, and includes nitoTV. If you’ve been waiting to jailbreak your Apple TV (2010) but tethering was dealbreaker, now’s you chance to go grab it and get your Jailbreak on.

According to @pod2g RC 6 fixes emulator issues and can be applied over RC 5 without restoring. And no, it doesn’t fix the problem with iBooks.

Greenpois0n not only works for the AT&T iPhone 4, it will also jailbreak your Verizon iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.6. I had no issues the first time out. It’s pretty straight forward and pretty much the exact same process you’d use to jailbreak an AT&T iPhone 4 with Greenpois0n running iOS 4.2.1. HIt the jump to find out what you’ll need. We’ll also give you a quick walkthrough as well.

What you’ll need

• Verizon iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.6
• Either a PC or a Mac
• Greenpois0n RC5 b4, Mac Version – PC Version

This jailbreak is also untethered so you won’t have to worry about having to connect your iPhone 4 to your PC every time you want to reboot like a lot of users did under redsn0w on iOS 4.2.1 (until greenpois0n came along).

How to jailbreak

1. Download Greepois0n from one of the links above (Mac or PC).

2. Save it somewhere easily accessible. I always put mine in the dock of my Mac. It’s easy to find if I ever need it again.

3. Make sure you have backed up all of your data via a sync in iTunes before proceeding any further.
4. Plug your Verizon iPhone into your computer via USB and turn it OFF.
5. Launch greenpois0n

6. Once you are ready to begin click Jailbreak. greenpois0n will walk you through putting your iPhone into DFU mode. If you mess up the first time, that’s okay, it will fail and you can simply try again.

7. After you have correctly entered DFU mode, greenpois0n will begin jailbreaking your phone. (As a side note, a lot of users reported the jailbreak failed because they did not hold the home button down long enough. I suggest holding it down for a few seconds even after the jailbreak begins installing, just to be safe.)

8. Let greenpois0n do its thing. Once it says “Complete!”, click it to close out greenpois0n.

9. When your phone boots back up, you should see a Loader Icon on your screen, tap it.

10. Then choose to install Cydia. Once it’s done, close out of Loader, let your phone respring and make sure Cydia is on your homescreen.

11. Once Cydia is installed, go back into Loader, tap options and uninstall Loader.

12. Close out of Loader and your phone will respring one more time in order to uninstall Loader.
13. Congrats! Your Verizon iPhone 4 is now jailbroken! Launch Cydia and let it update. If it asks you to do a complete or essential upgrade, click complete.

14. Once it is done, you should be able to re-enter Cydia and start enjoying all kinds of fancy jailbreak tweaks and apps!

We have been waiting for this for quite some time, but it finally hit Thursday evening – too late for some of us to try right away, but in time to install for the weekend.

This latest jailbreak tool easily jailbreaks your iPhone/iPad/AppleTV running the latest official os. While I’ve heard stories of it not installing Cydia for some, it loaded Cydia right up for me.

Ally’s pick: Due

Last week we gave away a few codes. I also had never heard of Due or tried it out. I’ve found it extremely convenient for little reminders. I use Appigo ToDo for projects and tasks. I use Evernote for free form note taking and lists. Neither of them provide a great quick reminder system.

For this, Due is great. If I just need to remember to call a client, send an email, pick something up, or any other random little thing – I’ve started using Due. It takes all of 10 seconds to add a reminder and you’re done. Simple, quick, and easy! Check it out!

Andrew’s pick: Smartr

Twitter is a very useful service for a number of reasons, but sometimes it can get a little chaotic. Smartr for iPhone analyzes your incoming tweets and strips out all the garbage, only displaying news headlines from the links your friends tweet. The app will even display the first snippet of text from the article below the headline if you want, and does so in a way that makes using Twitter for news a seamless experience. It’s given me a completely different way of consuming the news through Twitter.

When you come across something you find interesting, just tap the tweet and it will take you to the full text article. You have the ability to save interesting articles to services like Instapaper and Read It Later or publish the story to other networks like Tumblr and Posterous. You can even pin articles you want to save for reading later, right from within the app. If you have a lot of friends on Facebook who post interesting links you can also hook right into your Facebook newsfeed as well. So if you’re looking for a clean, simple and streamlined way to view the news on Twitter or Facebook then you’ll definitely want to give Smartr a try!

Brian’s pick: NinJump Deluxe

NinJump Deluxe is the newest version to the game NinJump and it is a great upgrade from the original. It has stunning crisp clear graphics and is a blast to sit and play for extended periods. The goal is to ascend the level while avoiding running into objects on the way up the level. You simply tap the screen and the ninja will jump from one side to the other to avoid obstacles. Also you can kill enemies while you jump with your intense ninja powers! The game also incorporates Game Center leader boards so you can see how you stack up compared to your friends. It is definitely a fun and addictive game and even children can have fun playing as well!

Chris O’s pick: Bop It

Bop It is a simple game that most people have played before. If you haven’t played it, you basically have to follow verbal commands which ask you to push buttons, twist or pull knobs and many other things. I used to have the original version of this game and we all loved playing it in our family. This time it is available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It sounds the same, but plays slightly differently. It is great fun and puts the iPhones capacitive screen to full use with different gestures for twist it, pull it etc. You can also twist the iPhone or pull it back in your hand for some of the moves.

There are two games available, solo and multiplayer then various different options after that. Since I bought the game I am struggling to put it down. Great fun!

Chris V’s pick: Chopper 2

My pick of the week is Chopper 2. I bought the original Chopper game when it game out, and recently bought the second version as well. It’s a fun game to play – simple controls, straight forward goals, and addicting at the same time. The overall play is the same as the original version, although there are some slight differences in some of the controls. For example, you can not aim your machine gun by tapping different areas on the screen, rather than by simply aiming straight ahead. But the biggest improvement in the game is the graphics. Chopper has very simple, 2D graphics that were almost identical (or at least very similar) to the kind of graphics you might have seen in the game Choplifter (with some slight improvement based on the newer technology). Chopper 2 incorporates 3D textured landscapes, which really adds a lot to the game play. I thoght at first you would have to fly around in 3 dimensions, but the game keeps the same 2D movement graphics. In the past few days that I have been playing Chopper 2, I have found it to be rather addicting. Part pf this is due to the ease of learning and simplicity of game play. The first time I played, I was on my iPhone for about 30 minutes (until I got a low battery warning).

Leanna’s pick: Waterlogged

I’ve recently been trying to make a better effort to drink more water, and Waterlogged is helping me in this endeavor. This little app allows me to log all the water I drink and watch a 64oz glass fill up with each entry that I make. After making a small in-app purchase, Waterlogged now sends me reminders to drink water throughout the day. It comes preset with a water bottle and a small 8oz glass to record, but you can also add your own cup and glass sizes (and picture) for frequent entries. If you didn’t finish the full glass, select approximately how much you drank and Waterlogged will do the math and add it to your total water consumption. The visual of watching my glass fill up and frequent reminders does a fantastic job of encouraging me to drink more water.

Rene’s pick: Beluga Messenger

I hate IM. I hate it so much I really think the initials stand for Interruptive Madness. I’m incredibly easily distracted and nothing stops me working faster than someone ping’ing me on IM to talk about work. That being said, IM does have a time and place and for me that time and place was Vegas during CES. Dieter, Phil, and I set up Beluga and a CES group. Yup, me on my iPhone 4, Dieter on his iPhone 4 and Nexus S, Phil on however many Android phones he brought with (might have been 765?). Some of the writers manning the HQ also jumped on to get stories and send marching orders (looking at AC’s Jerry). Sometimes it was annoying, once and a while comedic, but often it just let us get stuff done, and setting up a group cut out the chit-chat of one-on-one conversations. (No, Kevin and the CB crew didn’t join in — they shook their heads and went back to BBM. Obviously not super-appy enough for their needs!).

So while I hate IM, Beluga pulled through when we needed it to and for that it gets a pick of the week push! If you want quick, clean, albeit proprietary IM for individuals and grounds, check it out.

Greenpois0n RC5, the latest Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, has been updated to version 2, which should fix some of the issues users have been experiencing. Mainly the issue where your jailbreak will just sit at “Greenpois0n Initialized”. Hopefully this version will take care of that bug. I know a few people have been having issues even loading Greenpois0n.com. There are also several mirrors available, so keep checking the comments for the latest on those.

Also, some users have been noting that their Cydia icon is completely missing or they can’t get Cydia to install. You can alternately use redsn0w RC8 to install Cydia. Basically use Greenpois0n to jailbreak untethered and then run redsn0w just to install Cydia.

The Chronic Dev Team finally released Greenpois0n RC5 tonight which will jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 fully untethered. The only other jailbreak for 4.2.1 was previously limited to a beta version of Redsn0w, which had a few issues and wasn’t highly recommended for every-day users.

Many iPhone users (including myself) have been waiting a long time for this day to come. We haven’t been able to test it out yet, but so far there haven’t been any reports of issues or problems with the jailbreak. Right now only a Mac version is available but we’re expecting a Windows and Linux version to be available soon. We’re assuming this covers the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 as well as the iPad and iPod Touch, but we haven’t confirmed that yet.

I’ve been receiving a lot of questions about the state of current jailbreaks, especially when it comes to the just released iOS 4.3 beta and the Verizon iPhone (demo models ran iOS 4.2.5). The jailbreak community is working on a jailbreak but they have stated it will not come out as long as iOS 4.3 is in beta. There’s a good reason for this. Most jailbreakers already realize it’s a cat and mouse game with Apple.

If one of the dev teams has an exploit, they don’t want to burn it. If they release it now, Apple can patch it before the final release and it’s of use to no one. Unlocker @MuscleNerd isn’t planning on releasing an unlock until iOS 4.3 is official, and for good reason. Here’s what he has to say -

Official iPhone unlock statement: no unlock will be released until after 4.2.5 or official 4.3 (whichever is last) is out

I can’t imagine a general jailbreak tool being any different. No point burning exploits for no good reason. So on that front, just be patient. And as always, don’t upgrade right away if you plan on jailbreaking.

Please note that redsn0w is currently a tethered jailbreak. There is a redsn0w beta out that allows for an untethered jailbreak but it’s still got issues. I personally recommend staying on 4.1 until an easier (less buggy) solution is available if you can.

Wondering how to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 with greenpois0n? Jailbreakers have a wealth of options when it comes to iOS 4.1.  We’ve already looked at how to jailbreak iOS 4.1 via limera1n and how to jailbreak via PwnageTool 4.1.  Now we’re looking at the Mac version of greenpois0n.  PC users shouldn’t have too much difficulty following along with any of these as the steps are generally the same.  It’s really up to you what tool you decide to use.  I suggest unlockers use PwnageTool 4.1 though, as it will preserve your baseband for future unlocking.  And as always, we take no responsibility to any damage done to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

This version of greenpois0n will jailbreak the following devices:

• iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS
• iPod Touch 4th and 3rd gen
• iPad (iOS 3.2.2)

You’ll need to download greenpois0n first.  After that you’ll be able to launch it and it’ll walk you through how to put your phone in DFU mode.

If for some reason it keeps failing, try making sure iTunes is running in the background.  I know some people were saying it would fail unless iTunes was running.  You’ll know it worked when iTunes starts telling you you’re phone must be restored before it can be used.

greenpois0n should then do its job of jailbreaking your phone.  You’ll see a lot of random text across the screen of the phone and it’ll reboot itself.  If all goes well, when it reboots, you should have a loader icon on your homescreen. (For some users it seems to be the greenpois0n icon, for others it’s showing up as a white blank icon.)  Either way is fine.

Open the loader and install Cydia.  Once that’s done, your iDevice will reboot once more and you should now have access to Cydia.  Pretty simple process.

Prominent iOS hacker and Chronic-Dev Team member p0sixninja has tweeted a picture of an Apple TV jailbroken via Greenpios0n.

Previously, the Apple TV had already been jailbroken using the SHAtter exploit, but had absolutely no 3rd party app support. We aren’t sure of when this will be released, or if it’ll be as easy as the current Greenpois0n jailbreak for iPhone or iPad, but at least we know the effort is moving forward — and in a substantial way. Likewise, no information has been released on how 3rd party apps will be run, though the “inject method” shown in the picture is tantalizing to say the least.

However, we’re pretty sure that — given how quickly the team moves on this kind of thing — we’ll be seeing a release in the near future. Maybe with a planned release date announced in the interim, as they did with 10/10/10?

Earlier today, Chronic Dev Team member Joshua Hill (@p0sixninja) announced via twitter that they’ve released Greenpois0n, a jailbreak tool for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad running iOS 4.1. This falls behind their initial goal of pushing the jailbreak out on 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM due to GeoHot releasing his Limera1n jailbreak first.

Previously based on the SHAtter exploit, Greenpois0n now uses the same bootrom USB exploit that GeoHot implemented in his own release late last week. They decided on using the same exploit as to not give Apple any heads up on how the SHAtter exploit was conducted, in order to ensure that Apple doesn’t quickly patch both exploits in a future iOS update.

You can grab Greenpois0n via greenpoison.com, but you may also want to visit their blog before attempting the jailbreak for more info and to make sure your iOS device is supported. As with the Limera1n exploit, this allows for jailbreaking the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch (3rd and 4th gen only) and the iPad. Additionally, they’ve announced that a future update will also include a jailbreak for the Apple TV (2010) and the 2nd generation iPod Touch.

Moments ago, prominent Chronic Dev Team member Joshua Hill (p0sixninja) announced via twitter that “Things have progressed to the point where we don’t expect anymore roadblocks. ETA for greenpois0n is 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM.” This hotly anticipated Jailbreak should bring another large contingent into the Jailbreaking community as many new iPhone users who have not been able to jailbreak 4.0.2 and 4.1 will now be able to jailbreak their device.

While details of the jailbreak, such as whether it will be tethered or how it will be implemented have not been announced, that information will likely be given shortly… As a reminder, it is a good idea to save your SHSH blobs with TinyUmbrella if you have not already done so.

UPDATE: Greenpois0n is based on the SHAtter exploit which only works on 4th generation (2010) devices such as iPhone 4, iPad, and the iPod Touch 4. Older devices such as the iPhone 3GS will not be able to use Greenpois0n. Also if you wish to retain your ultrasn0w unlock, you will have to restore to a custom iPSW with baseband 01.59.00 and not the official apple 4.1 since baseband firmware CANNOT be downgraded.

Seems like Geohot, the original iPhone hacker, was set to announce “one jailbreak to rule them all”, or a simple, clean way to jailbreak all current iPhone and iPod devices, when another hacker team, Chronic, announced the same exploit and plans for a tool of their own, dubbed greenpois0n. Geohot responded on Twitter and his blog that, in light of their disclosing the exploit he felt a) they were taking credit for his work and b) Apple would patch it fast enough that it wasn’t worth doing any more.

Hackers, guys, boobalas: as much as the jailbreak community gives all of you all due respect and admiration, get over each other. You don’t owe anybody anything, not even the 3.1OTB (out the box)-hungry community who’s benefitted greatly from your work over the years, but you don’t need to spite the community over each other either. Apple’s the one you have the cat-and-mouse game with, right?

Just do the awesome Jailbreak voodoo that you do so well.
