iBooks: 100 million downloads, Random House bringing 17,000 titles

As part of the iPad 2 event today Apple announced that their iBooks ebook store has enjoyed over 100 million downloads since launching alongside the original iPad in 2010. Also, as previously noted, Random House has finally become the last major publisher to sign on and will be bringing 17,000 additional titles to the iBookstore.

Random House publications now available on iBooks

As rumored, it looks like Random House -- the last big publisher hold-out -- now has books available in Apple's iBooks library. Or as Chad put it when he woke us all up at the crack of dawn this morning:

Born to Run from Christopher McDougall and Tim Ferris's books can now be downloaded!!! Whoot!

Is this part of the iPad 2 event announcement later today? Seems a bit of a coincidence timing wise if not... Either way, anyone want to recommend some other good Random House books to check out?

Last major holdout, Random House, coming to iBooks?

Random House will be adopting the Apple and iBooks-centric 70/30 "agency model" tomorrow, the day before Apple's iPad 2 event on Wednesday.

"The agency model guarantees a higher margin for retailers than did our previous sales terms," Random House said in a statement. "We are making this change both as an investment in the successful digital transition of our existing partners and in order to give us the opportunity to forge new retail relationships."

Why iBooks doesn't play nicely with Jailbreak

If you launch iBooks on a Jailbroken iPhone there's a good chance you'll get an error message and not be able to open any of your legitimately purchased iBooks content. This is NOT a new problem -- many of us here at TiPb have been having this problem for a while and with older versions of iBooks. Some thought it was a bug with iBooks or an issue with certain releases of redsn0w or greenpois0n Jailbreak tools, but iPhone dev-team member @comex finally figured out what was causing it.

Apple updates iBooks, lots of new functionality

Apple has just released a significant update to its iBooks application. New in version 1.2 is the ability to experience fully illustrated books, be they children’s picture books or books of beautifully designed art, you can now enjoy them in all their glory within iBooks. Another new feature is the ability to organise your books and PDFs into personal collections, this is also synched over the air to your other iOS devices if you have them.

Google Editions to take on Apple's iBooks

Google is expected to launch an online eBook store before the end of the year under the name of Google Editions and that once again puts the head to head against Apple and their new iBooks:

The long-delayed venture—Google executives had said they hoped to launch this summer—recently has cleared several technical and legal hurdles, people close to the company say. It is set to debut in the U.S. by the end of the year and internationally in the first quarter of next year, said Scott Dougall, a Google product management director.

iBooks for iPad, iPhone to be updated with "Collections", printing, and PDF emailing?

According to some leaked screenshots and descriptions, Apple's iBooks app for iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone will be getting an update in the near future that includes "collections", along with PDF printing and emailing.

Collections are similar to folders. You will be able to make groups of books and PDF's that are accessible via the new "collections" button as well as from your bookshelf. User-created collections are completely customizable, but the the two default collections, Books and PDF's, are not.

Ever wonder how to get your digital booklets into iBooks? All of us probably have some sort of digital booklet we received as part of an album in iTunes, right? To be honest, I never really viewed them because I would typically be on the go when the mood struck, not necessarily sitting on front of a computer.
