Ios 4.2.1

Apple releases iOS 4.2.1 (4.3.1) bug fix update for Apple TV

Apple TV owners, Apple has just released an iOS 4.2.1 (4.3.1) update just for you. So turn on your television, click on over to Software Update, and start your download. It's a bug fix update as far as we can tell, mostly geared towards fixing the screen flicker and color issues some users have been complaining about.

If you have an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad there's nothing for you (yet) so it's interesting to see

(And once again we'll ask Apple to end the insanity of having a 4.2.1 software that's version number 4.3.1 and just settle on the same number as the rest of the iOS family -- pretty please?)

How to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 iPhone, iPad untethered via greenpois0n [Mac users only]

Greenpois0n RC5 now allows you to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 untethered on most devices including iPhone 4 and iPad. The best part? You won't need any SHSH blobs saved. redsn0w beta required you to have 4.2b3 blobs saved (and it was pretty unstable). Hopefully greenpois0n is going to be a much smoother experience for you guys. Hit the jump for a walkthrough on how to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with greenpois0n and for the answers to some commonly asked questions.

Greenpois0n untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 now available

The Chronic Dev Team finally released Greenpois0n RC5 tonight which will jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 fully untethered. The only other jailbreak for 4.2.1 was previously limited to a beta version of Redsn0w, which had a few issues and wasn't highly recommended for every-day users.

State of the iPhone iOS 4.3 Jailbreak

I've been receiving a lot of questions about the state of current jailbreaks, especially when it comes to the just released iOS 4.3 beta and the Verizon iPhone (demo models ran iOS 4.2.5). The jailbreak community is working on a jailbreak but they have stated it will not come out as long as iOS 4.3 is in beta. There's a good reason for this. Most jailbreakers already realize it's a cat and mouse game with Apple.

If one of the dev teams has an exploit, they don't want to burn it. If they release it now, Apple can patch it before the final release and it's of use to no one. Unlocker @MuscleNerd isn't planning on releasing an unlock until iOS 4.3 is official, and for good reason. Here's what he has to say -

Official iPhone unlock statement: no unlock will be released until after 4.2.5 or official 4.3 (whichever is last) is out

I can't imagine a general jailbreak tool being any different. No point burning exploits for no good reason. So on that front, just be patient. And as always, don't upgrade right away if you plan on jailbreaking.

In the mean time, you can make sure you save your SHSH blobs if you're already jailbroken. You can also read through our jailbreak starter's guide if you're curious but new to the jailbreak scene.

Click through for a current list of firmwares and what your jailbreak options are under each firmware. We've also got some links handy after the break to walkthroughs explaining each method.

Warning to unlockers: Apple implemented baseband signature check in iOS 4.2.1!

Apple has once again raised the stakes in their continuing cat and mouse game with unlockers by implementing a boot level signature check in iOS 4.2.1 that will cause the device to fail to boot if the baseband firmware is not correct. This is clearly a reaction to TinyUmbrella's ability to block baseband upgrades on the iPhone 4.

If you try and implement TinyUmbrella when installing 4.2.1 you will be thrown into recovery mode without the ability to kick yourself out of it unless you install the new baseband or downgrade back to iOS 4.1 (if you've saved your SHSH blobs).
