Apple to extend AirPlay video streaming licence to third parties?

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple is weighing up the possibility of extending its current licensing of AirPlay to include video. Currently third party manufacturers can use AirPlay but only the audio protocol. This is why we are seeing high end stereos and iPod docks with AirPlay but no products that can receive video streamed from an iOS device.

Under the new plan, according to “two people familiar with the project”, Apple will license AirPlay video software to consumer electronics makers this year. This could then be included in TV’s, Media Players, Blu-ray Players etc.

Google updates Latitude and Places apps, check-ins now included

Google has updated two of its apps, Google Latitude and Google Places. The apps are designed to help you connect with the people you care about at the places you love!

Google Latitude now has the added feature of check-ins, which allow you to see where your friends are on a map as well as choose to continually share your location information. When this setting is turned on, your location and check-ins will be done automatically; you will also be checked out when you leave so your friends know you have left. Original iPad can use the Smart Cover, with a little work [video]

If you are hanging onto your original iPad but really want one of the new Smart Covers for iPad 2, now you can. Dan Provost has discovered that by simply super gluing a few small magnets to the side of your iPad 1, the case fits and works very nicely.

The video after the break shows how it is done and although it does sound a little rough and ready, the final result is actually quite neat. If you decide to remove the case in the future, you’re still going to be literally stuck with the magnets on the side of your iPad, so be aware before you try this for yourself.

Folding of the cover to allow the iPad to stand up looks a little precarious but in the raised typing wedge mode it looks fine. The one missing feature, is the iPad does not automatically turn on and off when opening and closing the cover.

Is anyone willing to give this a go? Let us know in the comments!

Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 captures cleaner audio than AT&T and Verizon 3G models

iLounge was able to run a few tests on the microphone housed in the new iPad 2 and found there's a noticeable difference in quality between the Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 and the Wi-Fi + 3G models.

When using Skype and Garageband on the iPad, iPad 2 with Wi-Fi, and iPad 2 with Wi-Fi + 3G, we found that audio from the 3G iPad 2’s mic sounded somewhat more muffled and echo-prone than with the original iPad’s or the Wi-Fi-only iPad 2’s mics

Google Mobile app updated and renamed Google Search [video]

The popular Google Mobile app has just received a major update and a complete name change too. The app will now be known simply as Google Search.

The update offers more ways to interact with the app using swipe gestures. Swiping down in a page will reveal the search bar whilst browsing. There is also a dedicated apps button for quick access to mobile versions of Google Apps. A new toolbar is available to filter search results; again a swipe is initiated to access this toolbar, left to right.

If you leave the app and come back later, you’ll be able to either start a new search by typing in the search box, hit the microphone button to do a voice search or tap on the camera icon to use Google Goggles. If you want to get back to exactly where you were before you left the app, you can simply tap the lower part of the page and it will be restored.

Google Goggles, Voice Search, My Location and Gmail have also all been improved in this new app. There is a short video after the break, demonstrating the new features.

iPad 2 installed in the dash of an F-150 [video]

Car audio systems have improved dramatically recently but you have to take a look at an iPad 2 that has been installed within the dashboard of an F-150. The clever guys from SoundMan Car Audio go way beyond a simple car mount. They strip out the centre console and rebuild it to fit the iPad 2 perfectly. This was all done on the day the iPad 2 launch which makes the whole thing even more impressive!

The iPad 2 is the perfect car audio and entertainment system, the way these guys have installed it, complete with charging, video out to rear screens and the perfect fit and finish has really got us thinking. Car manufacturers really need to stop doing customised LCD panel audio and sat-nav systems and just adopt the iPad 2. This should be an extra in any good car manufacturer’s price list! It makes so much sense and offers so much more.

Take a look at the video after the break, and then let us know what you think in the comments!

Apple to partner with TSMC and move away from Samsung processors?

Apple is rumored to have signed a deal with TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co) to manufacture the A5 dual-core processor found in the iPad 2. The deal is said to be a foundry relationship. Apple will use TSMC’s 40-nm process for the A5 and will work with TSMC on a 28-nm process too.

This new deal could spell trouble for Samsung, the manufacturer of the A4 processor found on the original iPad.; Samsung also manufacture the processor for the iPhone 4. It is now "unclear" whether Samsung will play any part in building the A5 chip for Apple in the future.
