Apple 2013 iPad & Mac event preview

We're only hours away from Apple's 2013 iPad and Mac event, and just like the invitation says, there's a lot left to cover. Last year we got the improved iPad 4, all new iPad mini, redesigned iMac, and the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro. This year we're looking forward to a thinner, lighter iPad 4, Retina iPad mini 2, the all new Mac Pro, Haswell chipset-based MacBook Pro bumps, and... well, that's the real question, isn't it?

Tim Cook will come out and talk Apple Retail and Apple core values. Phil Schiller will show off new iOS and Mac hardware. Craig Federighi will demonstrate new features. Eddy Cue will take us to the iClouds. Jony Ive and Dan Riccio will show up in the videos. But what will they be talking about?

Let's take a look!

The "lots more to cover" tag line on Apple's October 22 event invitations have lead many to speculate about updated Smart Covers in general, and Logitech/Microsoft Surface style keyboard covers in specific. Apple has tossed out patent applications for such things in the past, of course, and it's one of the more popular third-party and competitive features. So, prototyping an Apple version that would enjoy better and deeper integration is no surprise. Jamie Ryan:

Apple reportedly readying Retina iPad mini for October 22 event

While it's been widely rumored for a while now that the iPad 5 would get the iPad mini's thinner, lighter design this year, rumors about the iPad mini getting the full-sized iPad's Retina display have been split down the middle - some "yes", some "no", some simply "hope so". Daisuke Wakabayashi and Ian Sherr, however, seem to think it's a done deal. From the Wall Street Journal:

Imagining iPad 5 and iPad mini 2: iSight and FaceTime cameras, storage

Some of the bigger questions surrounding the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 involve things like the lighter design for the former, Retina display for the latter, and the potential for Touch ID for both, but what also remains to be seen is what will happen with the iSight and FaceTime HD cameras, tablet editions. While not as dismal as the original iPad camera, they've still lagged enormously behind the iPhone. Will this year be any different?

iMore show 368: iPad & Mac event preview

After Google Hangouts destroyed two weeks of shows, Rene goes it alone to re-re-record the iPad & Mac preview event, detailing everything we just might see on October 22, 2013.

[Apologies again folks, Google Hangouts flat-out failed to record our show two weeks ago, and recorded only the first 10-minutes last week. We're looking at ways to get a backup recording. Apologies also to Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac who was kind enough to join us for last week's show.]
