iPhone 4.0: iChatAgent hints at video chat in next-gen iPhone?

TUAW was slipped a screenshot today showing something called iChatAgent running on iPhone 4.0. iChat is Apple's instant message client for Mac OS X that includes voice and video chat, among other features. Rumors of a Mobile iChat for iPhone that would include webcam-style video chat date back to 2008, and were most recently seen in (and then taken away from) iPhone 3.2 for iPad.

iPhone 4.0: Spotlight searches Google and Wikipedia

Spotlight in iPhone 4.0 takes a %&@ good on-device search that could find your apps, contacts, and other personal data, and makes it a ^%^(&$ fantastic on-device and web-resource search that can also send text strings out to the internet -- spelled Google and Wikipedia and bring you back the results.

First, yes, Google is still the default search engine, so that coffee break obviously worked. Second, yes, those Wikipedia strings that were discovered in previous iPhone OS betas looks like they've finally surfaced.

Reminder: We won't see all iPhone 4.0 features until WWDC in June

While Apple announced 7 tent-pole features for iPhone 4.0 including multitasking, folders, mail enhancements, iBooks, Enterprise features, Game Center social network, and iAd mobile advertising platform, it's important to remember we won't get the final feature set for iPhone 4.0 until Apple's World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) this June.

Last year Apple showed off a lot of features for iPhone 3.0 in March, but it wasn't until WWDC that we saw features specific to the new iPhone 3GS hardware -- video recording, VoiceOver, compass, Voice Memo app, etc.

Apple unleashes Game Center social network

While third parties have developed several of their own social gaming networks for the iPhone and iPad, Apple entered the space themselves today with iPhone 4.0 and their Game Center Social Network. (Think Microsoft Xbox Live or Sony Playstation Network for iPhone and iPad apps).

Features include inviting friends, matchmaking, leader-boards, and achievements. And because it's built into the OS, developers get it "for free". Hard to compete with that...
