There's been a lot of confusion over the last 48 hours as to whether or not Apple would be selling the iPhone 5 unlocked at Apple Retail Canada. For the last few years Apple has sold new iPhones unlocked at Apple Retail on launch day, but that time is over. As part of new, anti-scalping measure, if you want an unlocked iPhone in Canada this year, you'll have to order online.
iPhone 5 pre-orders have begun! Well, sort of. The Apple Online Store isn't working for everyone, some carrier sites are flakier than others, and in general would-be purchasers might be in for a long night.
If you're not pre-ordering your iPhone 5 but instead want to engage in the age-old (since 2007 anyway) tradition of lining up outside your local Apple Retail Store, and enjoy all the pomp and circumstance (and screaming Apple Geniuses) that go with it, good news -- According to Apple.com those stores will open at 8am local time on launch day, September 21.
The Canadian Apple Online Store also lists the factory unlocked price starting at $699 for 16GB. (Which probably means $799 for 32GB and $899 for 64GB... Yeah.)
iPhone 5 pre-orders will begin tonight at 12:01 am Pacific Time (that's 3:01 am ET, 8:01 am BST). Sprint will star pre-orders at the same time, Verizon will start 1 minute earlier, and AT&T... hasn't said yet.
If you are going to brave the web tonight, make sure you join our waiting for iPhone 5 pajama party. We'll be hanging out with the staff and readers, having fun, and giving away cool accessory prizes to the people posting.

Because of the glut of people trying to pre-order, web sites can grind to a halt and even come crashing down. Stay patient. Keep trying. Get multiple machines at play if you have to. Copy/paste or screenshot any important order or transaction numbers. Breathe.

iMore previously heard Apple was planning to start iPhone 5 pre-orders the same day as the announcement event, September 12. That was similar to the iPad 3 event and pre-order being on the same day back in March. Now, however, there's a rumor that Apple might do what they did in 2011 with the iPhone 4S and wait until the Friday after, in this case September 14.
Apple has announced their September 12 special event, expected to see the introduction of the next generation iPhone 5. The information on the invitation is sparse. According to the graphic shared by Jim Dalrymple of The Loop, it shows the number 12 (the date of the event), and the number 5 (make of that what you will), along with the following line: "It's almost here".
A couple of weeks ago iMore reported that Apple would be holding their iPhone 5 event on September 12, 2012. We've since learned that iPhone 5 pre-orders are currently planned to begin that same day, at least in the U.S. Release is still planned for 9 days later, on September 21, 2012. We've also learned that the second wave of iPhone launches, the ones in international markets, will begin in the first week of October, likely October 5.
iMore has learned that Apple is planning to debut the new iPhone at a special event on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, with the release date to follow 9 days later on Friday, September 21. This information comes from sources who have proven accurate in the past.
The iPad mini will be announced at the same September 12 event, as will the new iPod nano.
