Sherlock actor uses iPhone to audition for Star Trek

If the name Benedict Cumberbatch doesn't mean anything to you yet, just wait. He plays the title roll in Sherlock, the BBC's brilliant, modern re-imagining of Sherlock Holmes. He'll also be the voice of the dragon, Smaug, in Peter Jackson's upcoming Lord of the Rings prequels, The Hobbit. And if that's not enough, rumor has it he's landed one of the most iconic roles in science fiction in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek sequel. You got it. "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!" Or maybe not?

Longtime TiPb reader and law enforcement officer, Mike, sent us this tale of a poor iPod touch that got caught up in a sordid tale of crime, survived being run over by a car, and lived to play music about it all.

[Thanks Spanishcop!]

I just got my first iPhone, an iPhone 4. Before that I used two different generations of iPod touches.

I do quite a few "shooting scene reconstructions", and other investigations related to firearms examination. To that end, I have converted over from using a Tablet PC for field note taking, to using Office² and various self made worksheets. I can quickly enter various types of data related to the evidence I am examining. Today I even took a picture of a fired casing comparison using the iPhone 4 camera through the microscope objective, cropped the image (CropForFree), annotated it (iRetouch Lite), and then inserted into my worksheet in Office².

I'm a professional photographer from Massachusetts. I have the wonderful job of photographing some of the most beautiful women in the world in the coolest locations all over the country. Models, celebrities, NFL Cheerleaders, it goes on and on. My work has been in magazines, advertisements, Maxim, websites... the works! I love my job!

I honestly realized for the first time when reading this contest how much I actually use my iPhone on a day to day basis for what I do. It's a lot! Especially now that I have my iPhone 4, it's been even more. Here's when:

Once upon a time there was an inner city high school in lower Alabama. The children there all believed themselves to be the center of the universe. So it always came as quite a shock when their beloved French teacher told them that the US dollar was not used throughout the civilized world. Fortunately for these children, said beloved French teacher used WorldMate on her iPhone and was quickly able to find the current exchange rates for most currencies. This made it much more fun to window shop online and find out how much things would cost in real money.
