Considering switching to a Verizon iPhone and wondering how to avoid an AT&T ETF?

Early termination fees are a necessary evil for most carriers. They allow the carrier to recoup

Considering switching to a Verizon iPhone and wondering how to avoid an AT&T ETF?

Early termination fees are a necessary evil for most carriers. They allow the carrier to recoup some of the cost of a subsidized device if someone cancels early. It also makes the cost of switching to another carrier pretty painful. But there are a few ways to either get around an ETF or offset some of the cost to make the switch a little easier to swallow. Click through for a few suggestions.

Carriers are pretty hard up when it comes to waiving early termination fees. Especially when they know most customers are probably switching for a specific device. In this case, the Verizon iPhone 4. Back in June AT&T changed their ETF policies for smartphone users. The termination fee is not $175 any longer. It’s now $325 and will drop by $10 for every month you carry service with them.

Avoiding an ETF

Watch for contract term changes. If rates go up, that typically will give you an out. Keep in mind the rate has to directly affect you. If text messaging rates go up a cent or two but you have unlimited texting, the change doesn’t adversely affect you. You’d have a hard time arguing your way out.

If you’ve recently moved and your service is noticeably worse than what it was before, this can be a way out as well. You’ll need to be able to prove the service is pretty bad. Calling and reporting dropped calls can have a huge impact on their final decision. And when you talk to a rep, always get their name and make sure they notate on your account that you were calling about poor service coverage. This also works for people whose service has went downhill. I live in a huge Centennial acquisition area and we’ve had sketchy service for about the past year. I’ve seen a few people talk their way out of an ETF because of the degradation in coverage.

Keep your cool. This is probably the most important point of all. You want the person on the other end to sympathize with you. If you have a bad attitude, odds are they probably aren’t going to be too willing to help you out. Explain your situation thoroughly and with a level head. Reps are much more responsive to courteous customers than they are to those who just want to yell at them. Remember, the rep on the other line is a person too.

Offsetting the cost of an ETF

A lot of you may already have an iPhone 4 on AT&T. They sell like hotcakes on sites like Craigslist and eBay. They’re worth even more if they’re jailbroken and unlocked (or at least on a firmware that can be unlocked). In my area (Chicago), a 16 GB iPhone 4 is currently going for anywhere between $400-550 on Craiglist. A 32 GB that is unlocked is fetching around $650. These prices may vary given your area, but I’m almost willing to bet a mint condition iPhone 4 will fetch you at least the amount of your ETF. I always recommend meeting face to face for cash if you can. I’ve upgraded to the newest generation iPhone every year this way. I unlock them and fetch almost what I paid. I haven’t paid for an iPhone since I purchased my first gen.

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of listing your phone on websites, sites like Gazelle will take them off your hands for a reasonable amount. For a mint condition iPhone 4 with all the original accessories, the 16 and 32 GB models are being bought at $360 and $420 respectively. Enough to cover your ETF with AT&T.

If you’d like to get rid of your entire AT&T plan, you can always use sites like CellSwapper. You basically unload your entire contract. The way it works is you list your plan and device and when someone wants it, they’ll notify you. You’ll go through a change of responsibility with the carrier. Keep in mind the person on the receiving end will need to pass a credit check just like you did.

Find a family member or friend who wants an iPhone 4 and doesn’t mind being on AT&T. Maybe they have better service in their area than you do. This is probably the easiest way. You’ll need to call AT&T and tell them you want to do a change of responsibility. They’ll need to verify information for both parties, so you’ll both need to be on the phone call. They simply agree to take responsibility for the rest of your contract. Once they pass a credit check and pay their deposit (if there is one), you’re free from the AT&T ball and chain.

These are some of the ways that I have found to be most effective for customers. You can also find more advice and experiences with escaping ETFs on sites like the Consumerist as well. If any of you have any luck getting out of your AT&T contract, let us know how you did it!

Developer and hacker, James Whelton has managed to “Jailbreak” the iPod nano, getting past its cache comparison and installing a rather simple tweak that can remove default apps and replace them with ‘blank spaces’ on the nano’s springboard. This can open up the iPod Nano to more hacks and mods from other hackers, including the ability to potentially view Movies or TV Shows, set Calendar Events and set a passcode lock.

Whelton pointed out some hidden strings that he discovered in the iPod nano OS as well.

Next is the discovery in some of the device’s plists of reference to support of Movies, TV Shows, Apps, Games, vCards, Calender events and so on, with a few other cool things like a passcode lock. With the bypass I figured out, I hope to enable these pretty soon. It seems like the OS is a rehashed version of the previous nano’s OS.

Details on how to jailbreak the iPod nano are said to be released in a few days. It’ll be interesting to see what Team Jailbreak will do with the newly hacked Nano. Would you want Movies and TV Shows on such a small screen? Are there any particular mods you would like on the sixth-gen nano?

Check below for a video of the hack in action.

The Gold Master of iOS 4 that was just released yesterday after Steve Jobs WWDC keynote has already been jailbroken by msft.guy. This was accomplished by using some hackery along with the Dev Teams’s existing Pwnagetool.

The Dev Team has stated that they do have a working jailbreak for the final iOS 4 but we will not see that until June 21st or shortly there after so it may be wise to hold off on this particular hack. But if you are feeling brave and just have to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS running the iOS 4 GM then feel free to give it a try using these directions here.

Just hours after it’s beta release, iPhone OS 4.0 has been jailbroken and iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd has the video to prove it. The method of which this was done will remain kept under lock and key until it’s release this summer. Something else to keep in mind is that there is no guarantee that Apple won’t throw in a monkey wrench to shake things up between now and the final build.

The developer of Cydia, Jay Freeman, wants to take his creation to the next level. Freeman wants to turn the jailbroken app manager into a direct competitor of Apple’s official App Store. For anyone not familiar with Cydia, what it does is act as a jailbroken application gateway. Every single jailbroken application out there is found via Cydia.

Currently, there are paid apps within Cydia but they require the use of Paypal and unlocking keys. Those are all set up by the developers of the apps themselves. Having an organized jailbreak apps “app store” would be ideal but it could also give Apple the nudge to really start going after the jailbreaking community. It wasn’t long ago Apple claimed jailbreaking to be illegal.

According to Gizmodo, Freeman has already hired a lawyer. And TiPb thinks its for good reason… Now we all wait for a official response from Apple…

[Ed: We might have already seen the game plan in Apple vs. Psystar and the "John Doe" filings which may target the Hackintosh community -- Rene).

The first thread is a pretty straight forward poll, are you Jailbroken or not? As of right now the amount of members Jailbroken are way ahead of those who choose not to. So what about you?

Next thread comes to us from BKSinAZ, and he asked the following question. If he is using AT&T, is there any reason to jailbreak? I’m sure all of our readers who are currently Jailbroken can give BKSinAZ some reasons on why he should.

A lot has been said recently about the legality of Jailbreaking your iPhone. So is it a surprise that there are a few threads revolving around that topic? Be sure to check these two threads out: Jailbreak Illegal – What now? Restore? and Apple Says Jailbreaking is Illegal.

For everything that is Jailbreaking Apps… be sure to check out the forums iPhone Jailbreak Apps section. You will just begin to scratch the surface of what is exactly available to you.

In order to discuss these topics on TiPb forums you must be registered, which you can do right here, and it will only take a minute of your time.

See you on the forums!

With all of this Jailbreak talk going on lately, what better time to let all of you wanna-be Jailbreakers know that all of our how to guides are completely up to date for firmware 2.2.1. For some people, getting into the world of Jailbreaking can be confusing and that is completely understandable. TiPb wants to make it as cut and dry as humanly possible for you. So here we go.

So you have a iPhone 3G that you will want to unlock? Ok, in order for that to happen you must use our preserving baseband guide which can be found here. Currently only Mac users can use this method, sorry Windows faithful. It is also important to note that you must be on anything but the 2.2.1 firmware (2.2 or earlier) in order to be able to unlock your iPhone 3G with the Dev Teams Yellowsn0w.

Ok, here is another one for all of the Mac users out there. You have a first generation iPhone or an iPhone 3G and all you care about is simply Jailbreaking. Well then you would use the Mac QuickPWN method. It is important to remember, use this method only if you are not interested in unlocking your iPhone.

No, we have not forgotten about Windows how to guides. You say you have a first generation iPhone that you want Jailbroken and unlocked? This is the guide you would use to get that taken care of right here.

iPhone 3G owners who want to Jailbreak, it is pretty simply – check out this guide and you are good to go.

So there you have it, all of TiPb how to guides updated for 2.2.1.

[UPDATE: Erica Sadun of Ars Technica weighs in on Crackulous, and the humor of pirating pirate software... - Rene]

Let me start out by saying none of us here at TiPb condone any type of piracy. You think you deserve to get paid at the end of the day for your work? So do developers and their hungry children.

That being said, Apple must be saying Uh-Oh right about now. Crackulous, which is now available via Cydia, enables you to strip the protection off most apps from the App Store. What this simply means is if a single person purchases an app, he or she can put the app out there — for free — for anyone who has a Jailbroken iPhone to grab.

Of course, it was simply a matter of time before someone in the Jailbreak community came up with an app such as Crackulous, and we can just imagine how many new Jailbreak artists there will be because of this new app.

You can pretty much count on the fact that Apple is already addressing this issue with a FairPlay (their DRM that wraps all iTunes App Store apps) fix that will turn up in the next software update. Another cat and mouse game has just been born.

[Via Engadget Mobile, thanks to themurdock for the tip]

Well here is yet one more attempt to get cut/copy and paste going via a Jailbroken app from iSpazio. Clippy inserts two buttons into the iPhone system keyboard, one for copying and the other for pasting. One major gripe is that it only accepts user-entered text. So there is no copying any text from web sites or emails, etc…

It’s very easy to use this app. Once installed, start typing text, then select it with your finger, and tap the “123″ key to show a new line at the top of your keyboard. Now tap copy and then enjoy yourself to paste your text in every other app you want!

Again, this app is available for free if you have a Jailbroken iPhone. To try it out, simply go to the iSpazio Repository in Cydia and download it straight to your phone. While this app is not perfect, it is a much better attempt than the previous tries

So you’re still debating whether or not to jailbreak your iPhone? Hopefully after reading this you will have made your decision. Back in October we brought to you the first Top 5 Must-Have Jailbreak Apps, well today we bring you round two of the series. Now keep in mind, all the seasoned veterans of Jailbreaking will or should know about all the apps listed here. This article is for the sole purpose of swaying those still on the fence to the darkside…

***All of the following apps can be downloaded via Cydia on your Jailbroken iPhone.

Read on after the jump!

1. PDAnet

Yes, this one was covered fully by Dieter, but this app seems to definitely be super popular in the Jailbreak community. PDAnet will use your iPhone as a Wi-Fi router that you can connect to with your laptop to browse the internet. Do you want to get stuck paying AT&T $30 for tethering services for some causal browsing? Didn’t think so… so head over to check out our full guide on how to set up PDAnet. You’ll be surfing in no time!

Be sure to heed Dieter’s warning when using this app:

There is one major caveat you need to be aware of with PdaNet: the Terms of Service on the standard AT&T iPhone contract (and also on their standard Data Plans) do not allow you to tether. Most people simply ignore this and go ahead and tether anyway — being careful not to overdo it might prevent AT&T from hitting you with extra fees or even a cancellation.

2. Cycorder

So the lack of common features of other phones really aggravates you? Say the lack of video recording on a device that is geared towards multimedia? Yeah, we can see how that one is pretty disappointing. Well thanks to the Jailbreaking community you now to can record video with your iPhone with Cycorder. Recording in .mov format, Cycorder gets anywhere from 7-15 frames per second along with supporting audio! To get Cycorder simply go into Cydia and you will see it on the “Featured Packages” list on the front page.

For more information and details please visit our post on this free video recorder – Cycorder.

3. Status Notifier

In the forums lately a few of you have asked me about a program that notifies you of incoming messages, missed calls, voice mails, calendar alerts, etc… Well there is one simple answer to that, Status Notifier.

4. SBsettings

This next app also addresses a common complaint that we hear a lot regarding the iPhone. I don’t know how many times I personally have seen “Is there any way to turn Wi-Fi off/on without going through all those steps?” on the forums. The answer – SBsettings. Now take that one step further, how about screen brightness? Toggle bluetooth on and off with a single button on the home screen anyone? Edge and 3G? You get the idea… Try it out!

5. Qik

Another area that iPhone customers get the short end of the stick on is streaming live media. Until now that is. Let me introduce you to a little app called Qik. Qik offers iPhone users access to internet video streaming over their cellular network. Be sure to check the Qik link above to get yourself up and streaming over the internet!

Conclusion

Hopefully after reading this you are finally off the fence and will either Jailbreak or simply decide it isn’t for you. If you do jailbreak, this list of must-have jailbroken apps should keep you busy for some time. For more information about jailbreaking please visit our Jailbreak Apps forum along with Jailbreak Central!

The forums continue to grow and today we have a few interesting threads that you should not miss.

Sturamsden started a thread that asks the question I’m sure a lot of people who do not currently own an iPhone may be asking: should I wait until the next generation iPhone comes out before I make my purchase? To see what type of advice he is getting please head on over to his thread, how close is the next gen iPhone?

Next we have forum member Dizzy, he seemed to be having some battery life issues after the 2.2 firmware update. I know I had some similar issues after the 2.1 update, is anyone else having similar battery drain problems with the 2.2 firmware?

The next thread will help a lot of you out there looking to add ring tones to your iPhones. It was started a while back by cjvitek: Want to make your own ringtones but you don’t want to have to pay for them? Well if the answer is yes, then please check out that thread. All the information you need is contained in the link.

Finally we have a whole sub forum dedicated to jailbreaking and we’d like to point it out to all of you interested. It seems jailbreaking has gone to the next level with the 2.2 firmware and I urge anyone interested to check this sub forum out now! For those of you who are jailbroken, we want some feedback from you. What are your top 10 favorite jailbroken apps? Even if it’s your top 5, that will do. Thanks!

Now does this really come as a surprise to anyone out there? Well it comes as no surprise for all of us here at TiPb that the Dev Team has jailbroken the latest 2.2 firmware beta released by Apple to developers. Not too shabby, and it should make all of you out there happy to know that the wait to jailbreak the 2.2 firmware will not be long! Short and painless. Now remember this is a beta right now so Apple may make some changes that can toss a wrench into the Dev Team’s work but seriously how long would that slow them down? A day or two? Props to the Dev Team, they have yet to let us down.

For all of your jailbreaking needs be sure to check out our dedicated forums on that particular topic, iPhone Jailbreak Central and iPhone Jailbreak Apps.

Did you think we forgot all of you on 1st generation iPhones? Well we here at TiPb have not forgotten any of you! If you have been craving true GPS for you iPhone well here is your chance to grab it while you can.

OrangeGadgets is on the brink of releasing an add on GPS module for the iPhone, the iGPS360. This is excellent news for all of you with 1st generation iPhones… what’s the catch you ask? I’m glad you asked… you have to jailbreak your device for it to work. The reason for this is that Apple has not allowed any 3rd party access to the operating system via the dock connector. So jailbreaking is the only way.

The iGPS360 is now available to order for $75.00. For that price you will also receive a 6ft USB-A to micro USB-B cable for on-the-go or at home charging. According to their website the module begins shipping today. Keep in mind, they are only producing 1000 of these units so if you want GPS, act fast!

[You're tempted. We know you are. We are too. Even with the App Store, Jailbreaking is the ultimate in iPhone forbidden fruit. So what will it take to push us over the edge? How about the top 5 killer Apps. Stuff Apple will never allow in the official store? Jeremy rounds them up for us below, and if you do decide to take the plunge, he has you covered with full tutorials on how to Jailbreak the iPhone 3G with Quickpwn for Windows PCs, Mac OS X, how to Jailbreak and Unlock the original iPhone 2G.]

Our forums have been buzzing lately with members asking “why should I jailbrake?” Well today TiPb brings you some of the very best reasons: the top 5 must have Jailbreak Apps!

What are they and what do they do? Read on after the jump!

1. Winterboard

For those of you who really want to trick out your iPhone’s user interface, look no further than Winterboard. Using the Winterboard you can apply whole skins to your device or just specific parts of it. The things you can customize include App icons, wallpaper, and even the statusbar, dock, etc. You can spend an entire day tweaking your UI to your liking. For the best guide I’ve seen for Winterboard, check out this link here.

2. BossPrefs

While you can remove Apps, WebClips, etc, from your device by just tapping and holding, then simply tapping the “X” icon, the built-in Apple icons are not removeable on your iPhone. This is where BossPrefs comes into play. Install it to get extra options for configuring your device, including “Poof!” a section where you can disable icons, even if they are fixed ones like iTunes or Weather.

3. Intelliscreen

This next little gem of an App was reviewed back in May by Casey. Have you ever needed to check your Mail but didn’t have time to thumb through your iPhone to check it out? Intelliscreen by Intelliborn allows for easy access to information on your iPhone lock screen, such as Mail and SMS messages, iCal dates, news stories, sports scores, and more. If you are a fan of widgets on your PC or Mac, or the Today Screen on Windows Mobile devices, you’ll love Intelliscreen.

4. Backgrounder

This App is one that I told you about this past week. It’s called Backgrounder, and it simply allows you to run official App Store apps in the background. Imagine that, the ability to multitask right on your iPhone! Try this app out, you will not regret it! Here’s how you use it:

You just press and hold the home key while running any application. After a few seconds, the Backgrounding Enabled pop-up appears. Release the home button and go about your business. Backgrounder automatically returns you to SpringBoard. To quit the background application, re-launch it from SpringBoard, then press and hold Home until the Backgrounding Disabled pop-up appears.

5. Categories

Categories allows you to create folders on your desktop. This gives you the ability to organize your home screens in ways far beyond anything Apple currently provides. When you add an App to a category, it is taken from the Springboard list so that it no longer shows up on the home screen. When you remove the app from the category it is returned back to the Springboard. In other words, instead of scrolling from screen to screen, you can have one screen containing all of your App folders for instant access to what you want. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Below is a picture of what a games folder would look like when opened from the springboard.

*Since Categories edits system files, be sure to check out the Help section before using this App to avoid any complications. It gives you step by step directions.

Conclusion

So there you have it, you wanted to know the top 5 Apps out there and TiPb comes through and gives you the answer! This list of must-have jailbroken apps should keep you busy for quite some time along with giving your iPhone a fresh new look!

A new application, Backgrounder, is now available for jailbroken phones! This allows you to run official App Store apps in the background. Yes, you can now listen to music while you are in your favorite App Store app!

With Backgrounder, you don’t have to log into a secure shell session. You don’t have to perform black magic.

Why Apple has not allowed apps to run in the background is beyond me. At first I thought that maybe the iPhone couldn’t handle a few apps running at the same time so Apple rightfully did not allow it… well after trying this new app, which is only available to jailbreakers via Cydia, it is more than obvious that the iPhone indeed can handle apps running in the background.

So Apple when will you learn if you don’t give us what we want, we eventually just take it…

So are you finally going to jailbreak your phone now? We’ve got step by step instructions up to Jailbreak the iPhone 3G for both Mac OS X and Windows PC users, and for the original iPhone 2G.
Disclaimer – Neither TiPb nor I take any responsibility for any problems/issues/bricking/etc. that may occur while using this software to modify your iPhone. Please be aware of what you are doing.

IMPORTANT: If you have a iPhone 3G that you want to unlock you must use the preserving baseband method – only available on Macs.

There has been a lot of buzz going on in the forums regarding jailbreaking the iPhone 2.2.1 firmware lately, and a lot of questions to go along with i t!. Today we’re going to take a deeper look at the exact steps you have to take to get your iPhone jailbroken on your Mac.

Let’s get started, after the jump!

1. Get the Tools

First and foremost make sure your iPhone is updated to the 2.2.1 firmware. If you’re not yet running 2.2.1, update via iTunes. We’ll wait. Honest.

All good? Okay, next make sure your iPhone is not connected to your Mac. Then create a new folder on your desktop and name it “Pwnage”. Next you will need to download the following tools:

QuickPwn

2.2.1 Firmware IPSW for first generation iPhone (2G)
OR
2.2.1 Firmware IPSW for iPhone 3G

[BE SURE TO SELECT THE PROPER FIRMWARE VERSION, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT]

2. Install the Tools

Now double click on the firmware file you just download to mount QuickPwn. Once mounted click and drag the QuickPwn application into the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop.

3. Launch QuickPwn

Simply double click the QuickPwn icon to get started, click ok to accept the copyright notice and we are ready to begin.

4. Connect your iPhone

You will be asked to connect your iPhone to your Mac, do this now and then click ok.

5. Begin Pwnage!

QuickPwn will now detect whether you have connected an original iPhone (2G) or iPhone 3G.

Now the software will search for the 2.2.1 ipsw firmware file you downloaded a few minutes ago.

6. Customize Your iPwn

Next you will be asked if you would like to replace the original boot and recovery logos on your iPhone. Select Yes or No to continue.
[If you select yes, you will have the nifty little pineapple logo at startup instead of a apple.]

Now QuickPwn will create your custom IPSW file.

Once that process is complete you must enter in your OS X system password to continue. (Just like when you update certain applications).

7. PAY ATTENTION: Here’s the Tricky Part

This next part can be a bit tricky but as long as you pay attention to exactly what the software tells you, you should have zero issues. You have to put your iPhone into DFU mode.

First turn off your device.

Next, you will be prompted to hold down both the home and power button for 10 seconds.

Lastly, you will release the power button while you continue to hold down the home button for another 10 seconds.

8. Sit Back and Wait

QuickPwn will now begin to work it’s magic.

Be patient while QuickPwn is modifying your iPhone. It will take a few minutes.
[Do NOT do anything to your computer or iPhone while this process is taking place]

Your phone will the reboot and once it starts back up you will see the Installer app along with Cydia, and you are done!

9. We Have Jailbreak!

You have just jailbroken your iPhone!

Now wasn’t that simple?

We’ll be back soon with our Windows PC edition, and in the meantime if you want more information or help troubleshooting please head over to our section of the forums dedicated to jailbreaking.

If you have been missing that all-important video recorder functionality for your iPhone, look no further than Cycorder. Now before you get all excited let me first say the only way you will be able to get this app is to have a jailbroken phone along with Cydia.

Jay Freeman, the author of other jailbroken apps such as Cydia and Winterboard, released Cycorder. It does have ads, but I can assure they do not get in your way. Just keep in mind these ads are keeping this app free for all of us.

Cycorder’s video is shockingly decent for a cell phone video recorder. Recording in .mov format, Cycorder gets anywhere from 7-15 frames per second. It did not support audio when it was first released, but it does now. An update has just been released and it finally supports audio, though this clip does not contain any.

To get Cycorder simply go into Cydia and you will see it on the “Featured Packages” list on the front page. Download and enjoy!

Video and screenshot, after the break!

[Thanks for the tip Art!]

This one is for our very own Dieter Bohn… For those of you who do not know, and it pains me to say this, Dieter loves his Windows Mobile.

It seems like the tables have turned here for this edition of “Send in the iClones”. I suppose it is only fair that we as iPhone owners have the tables turned on us sometimes. What we have here is called iPhoneFLO. It is a simple theme you can use if you have Summerboard on your Jailbroken iPhone. To find it go into the installer.app and search for iPhoneFLO. Be sure to have Summerboard installed as well, which can also be installed via the installer.app.

For more information please visit our section of the forums devoted to Jailbreaking. Anyone going to give this a shot and Jailbrake simply for this theme?

Trouble finding a certain app in the app store? Well, there is a new website out there called iPhonexe (mobile version can be found here) that gives everyone with a iPhone a alternative to using Apple’s official app store. While I personally have not checked for every single app currently in the app store, iPhonexe claims to include them all, broken down into categories ready for nice and easy browsing. Keep in mind that this does not bypass Apple’s app store completely. If you click “Buy Now” you are taken directly to the app in the app store to purchase it via iTunes.

But wait! I’ve saved the best feature (by far) for last: the ability to search Jailbroken apps! I know there are other sites out there that you can use to see what is available on that side of the iPhone world but none do it this nicely. It is worth a look for sure.
