Untethered jailbreak may be fully patched in iOS 5

Prominent iPhone hacker i0n1c revealed in a tweet yesterday that the untethered jailbreak he created has been fixed in iOS 5.

R.I.P. – I just heard Apple killed the ndrv_setspec() integeroverflow and his friends in iOS 5.0b1 – if this is true the untether is dead

State of the iPhone iOS 4.3 Jailbreak

I've been receiving a lot of questions about the state of current jailbreaks, especially when it comes to the just released iOS 4.3 beta and the Verizon iPhone (demo models ran iOS 4.2.5). The jailbreak community is working on a jailbreak but they have stated it will not come out as long as iOS 4.3 is in beta. There's a good reason for this. Most jailbreakers already realize it's a cat and mouse game with Apple.

If one of the dev teams has an exploit, they don't want to burn it. If they release it now, Apple can patch it before the final release and it's of use to no one. Unlocker @MuscleNerd isn't planning on releasing an unlock until iOS 4.3 is official, and for good reason. Here's what he has to say -

Official iPhone unlock statement: no unlock will be released until after 4.2.5 or official 4.3 (whichever is last) is out

I can't imagine a general jailbreak tool being any different. No point burning exploits for no good reason. So on that front, just be patient. And as always, don't upgrade right away if you plan on jailbreaking.

In the mean time, you can make sure you save your SHSH blobs if you're already jailbroken. You can also read through our jailbreak starter's guide if you're curious but new to the jailbreak scene.

Click through for a current list of firmwares and what your jailbreak options are under each firmware. We've also got some links handy after the break to walkthroughs explaining each method.

Geohot exploit + Comex userland tools to keep Apple A4 iPhones Jailbroken and untethered Forever

iPhone Dev Team's MuscleNerd has announced via twitter that Comex's Userland Tools can be used to keep all Apple A4 chipset-based, Jailbroken iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads untethered for all future firmware releases. Coupled with Geohot's limera1n exploit which will work on all current A4 devices for the duration of their lifespan, and iPhone Dev Teams custom pwnagetool which will keep your baseband unlockable, Jailbreakers can look forward to being up to date with all current firmware releases without any worry of losing their Jailbreak or Unlock status.

How to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 via limera1n [Jailbreak]

Wondering how to Jailbreak your iOS 4.1 iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad? limera1n was updated to support Mac today and after testing, it's a pretty painless process. Pretty much what we've come to expect from Geohot. So here's your TiPb-style walkthrough. You PC users should be able to follow along relatively easily as well since both jailbreaks are pretty much identical in nature.  We've also got tutorials on how to jailbreak iOS 4.1 withgreenpois0n as well as how to jailbreak iOS 4.1 with PwnageTool 4.1 as well.  So feel free to pick your pois0n, er... ra1n.

But as usual, here's the standard disclaimer first:

If you are at all hesitant about jailbreaking or don't consider yourself an intermediate to advanced user, we recommend you pass this up.  TiPb does not accept any responsibility for broken iOS devices (even though we'll be happy to try and help if you run into any problems along the way).  If you're alright with all this, click on for a written, as well as a video walkthrough!

Dev Team comments on Geohot's limera1n [Jailbreak]

The Dev Team has commented on Geohot's multiple iOS device jailbreak, limera1n, released yesterday. A bootrom-level Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS (2009/2010), iPhone 4 (2010), iPod touch 3 (2009), iPod touch 4 (2010), iPad (2010), and theoretically Apple TV (2010). which was released yesterday and it's fair to say it hit the community like a small yield nuclear blast:

UPDATED: Limera1n released! BEFORE Greenpois0n [Jailbreak]

Geohot has struck first by releasing his limera1n jailbreak for all 3rd gen and 4th gen devices, using Comex's userland tools to make it untethered. While there was talk of consolidating Chronic Dev Team's Greenpois0n jailbreak with Geohot's Limera1n, Geohot has decided to release his first. Chronic Dev Team has responded -- angrily -- on twitter

Will they go forward with Greenpois0n as planned? Stay tuned...

Limera1n teases all iOS device exploit, return of Geohot?

Looks like Geohot wants back with limera1n and back in on the Jailbreak scene. Just day after Chronic Dev Team and Comex announced the 10/10/10 release date of Greenpois0n, he has announced his own bootrom exploit, which he wants included in Greenpois0n, no doubt delaying it's release... What will Chronic Dev Team do? According to the @chronicdevteam twitter account:

We are currently working the "situation" out. Don't worry, you'll still get the jailbreak in the end, nothing to be concerned about.
