Umpteenth verse, same as the first -- Macworld turned their iPhone ebook into and app and submitted it to the iTunes App Store. It was rejected. Several times. Finally editor Jason Snell expressed his frustration on Twitter and several high profile blogs picked it up. Apple called him immediately to try and make it right.

Good for Macworld. Bad for all the developers who lack the same megaphone by virtue of their job and connections.

Granted, with 100,000+ apps, the non-sensical and erroneous rejections remain a tiny percentage, but even a tiny percentage of 100,000+ represents many developers' time, effort, and money. It's frustrating for them and embarrassing for Apple.

Tim Cook and Phil Schiller claim they're making improvements, and no doubt they are. From a pure perception point of view, however, this is one issue that needs fixing sooner rather than later.

Dan Moren of Macworld has an interesting post up about this year's C4 Independent Developers Conference, and how the indie devs seem to have cooled towards iPhone development and turned their attention back to the Mac. Why? Not the technology, of course. They're up on the handset and almost everyone had at least one. No, it was dissatisfaction with the state of how Apple runs the iTunes App Store, of course.

Lack of control over elements like release times was cited as one issue. Profitability, another:

The problem is that the prices in the App Store, which tend towards the lower end, make it harder to recoup the investment put into developing the program in the first place. Sure, there have been over two billion downloads from the App Store, but remember there’s more than 85,000 apps available. Even if your 99 cent application gets downloaded 10,000 times, after Apple’s 30 percent cut that’s just $7,000 in revenue—not profit, mind you, just revenue—and if you spent the last six months of your life working on that application, you better hope you’re still working a day job if you want to cover living expenses.

Rather than abandoning the platform, however, some devs had suggestions for how Apple could help make things better, including upgrade pricing (to avoid Tweetiegate situations), creating a mechanism for demos, and something we've heard before from Craig Hockenberry -- having a higher-priced developer account option that comes with a better service level from Apple ($999 platinum account, for example, in addition to the current $99 version).

With the current volume market, Apple may not care since they'll make their 30% off Apps and CrApps alike. But here's hoping their pride wins out, and Apple decides they don't merely want the most successful App Store, but the very best one as well -- for users and developers.

With Apple announcing that Macworld 2009 would be its last, rumors began to fly that maybe CES 2010 would get Steve Jobs' attention instead. TiPb still isn't buying that -- given Apple's stated reasons, it makes no more sense for them than Macworld.

However, now word comes that iLounge has begun working with the CEA (the organization behind CES) to create an iPhone (and iPod) "iLounge Pavilion" at CES as a rallying and gathering point for exhibitors -- perhaps in lieu of Macworld 2010.

iLounge seems to feel this is necessary to help proactively preserve and project forward the iPhone and iPod community given the perhaps uncertain future of Macworld.

Macworld (the magazine, not expo, though they share the same parent company) editor Jason Snell, however, on Twitter expressed concern that iLounge might have crossed a line beyond merely being proactive.

Hearts and souls are likely still hoping for a strong and vibrant Macworld next year, but are pragmatic minds and wallets turning more towards CES? And what lines should -- or shouldn't -- be crossed when it comes to media (new or old) covering events, or each other, while having or making alliances with competitive events?

So Macworld 2009 has come and gone. Sad, yes we all know. Although, that does not mean all of the special deals that were going on at the show are gone! One of discounts still floating around comes to us from RichardSolo.

No sooner to rumors sprout that Apple may have abandoned Macworld only to show up at CES next year, than the CEA decides to pour some miracle grow on them. Says CNet:

Jason Oxman of the CEA confirmed Saturday that the group "dedicated a special area at the 2010 CES to Apple-related CE manufacturers." That immediately sets up an alternative for companies thinking about exhibiting at Macworld 2010, which will not have Apple present for the first time in 12 years.

No word on Apple itself actually attending of course (Dieter thinks it will never happen), but with Macworld sending out free early-bird registration offers already, this could be a way to try and lure in Mac- and iPhone-centric third parties very much on the fence about 2010.

Who would still go to Macworld if CES gets its Apple on next year?

• Guttenberg is example of kind of shift we're seeing now
• TV didn't replace radio, but Leo thinks we now have a greater shift
• In the beginning, they only printed bibles, just faster, but a generation it took to start doing interesting things - The Price, novels, Luthor's reformation, scientific revolution.
• Newspapers went broader still, country. Movies go international. True mass media as we know it.
• TV reaches huge audiences - 2.5 billion watched World Cup
• Internet blows this all up. Global Audience
• Mass media = monopoly, only richest could afford to publish/distribute
• Because it was expensive, you needed a mass-audience
• If you wanted to broadcast, had to beg someone who owned tower.
• Early days, anyone could paint on cave wall, play a guitar
• 1920s, only a few could decide who got voice -- but now the monopoly is shattering
• High cost meant diversity of voices was mall (last 100 years, not normal)
• Brains are tribal, understand small groups and communities, talking to each other. We prefer conversation
• Monopoly disolving, anyone can publish now.
• On YouTube, anyone does!
• 1 Billion now have distrobution, voice, chance to put content out
• Not like 3 anchors of traditional TV who controlled agenda.
• When Cronkite gave up on Vietnam war, was powerful enough to effect country

• Big media can't control content or creators now, but could control editorial

• Mac lovers really get this: digital content/Mac empowers creating and distributing

• Let's talk about Money -- someone has to pay you
• One engaged community member is suddenly worth a lot of less-engaged, passive listeners and advertisers are beginning to notice.
• TWiT can succeed because relatively cheap to make, and advertisers prefer intelligent audience they're engaging.
• People listening to mass media are very loosely engaged, skip ads, TiVo.
• Advertisers want people to pay attention. Can't go to audience as pitchman, have to come as member of audience.
• Markets are conversations, not pitching, not tricking to create need where none exists
• Advertisers need to come as equal and offer what you might like, ask you to try it
• Advertisiers are having hard time with this, haven't caught up, only sharp people
• LONG TAIL! Go Dieter!
• Right hand side is best sellers who make a LOT of money. The rest make less. The Thin part can be as much as the best sellers. Amazon knows this, can capitalize on it. Same with Google Ads.
• Is shifting, however. Problem for content creater. Tiny slice is Leo!
• Aggregators make money, put it togther: Podango, Meevio, put a lot of shows together to get long tail. Didn't work.
• Isn't what community wants, is disperate communities now. Lots of us now with thin slices.
• Growing, aggregating by community.
• TWiT downloads 2-3 million shows per month. Group is growing but not by diversity, but by community of common interest.
• TechTV didn't understand this, wanted to broaden to get Long Tail, people who don't like technology
• Leo: are you crazy? Like ESPN doing show for people who hate sports.
• Should use laser focus!
• Old media guys can't get head around it, think there's no money in it.
• TechTV said "Brand is the refuge of the Ignorant", mantra of TechTV.
• Didn't want smart viewers, who choose on quality not tricks.
• Old school might be right, new way is wrong. Now assume you are intelligent, interested.
• NBC boss once came in with 3-piece suit and cowboy boots with Henchmen. Leo and Ziff Davis had 90-page treatment for site.
• Boss said he really liked it, then cancelled as soon as they could. (Same studio as TechTV).
• They believe viewers are cattle, afraid of intelligence. TechTV was to avoid word "educational"
• Leo didn't want to talk to stupid people, doesn't care if audience of 5
• TWiT was without apology, Geeky as can be.
• Steve Gibson -- nerdiest fellow he ever met
• Quinty Venty Latte - 5 shot latte before every show.
• So enthusiastic, loves getting down to details. Writes everything in Assembler.
• Leo likes that, kind of guy he wants to put on the air.
• Doesn't want broad, dumb network.
• For many people who run tech, it's foreign language, don't want something on air they themselves don't understand.
• Now he turns down advertisers -- they want engaged audience.
• Doesn't want ads that tick people because audience is too smart.
• Radio now changing -- still doesn't understand but knows he's selling out ads.
• TechTV never got it. Not bitter, but SO many stories.
• TechTV did create this, Kevin Rose/Rev3, Patrick Norton. Unfortunately, runners were still old media, wanted tall part of tail.
• TechTV wanted Apple, Microsoft of Screen Savers. NO! Not vendor spots. Okay, how about Cleavage?! Maybe if you have cleavage, more people will watch.
• TV people listen with sound off, not about content, only looks. Million dollars on Tech Live studio (what put them out of business).
• Kenny Rogers talking about iPod was when it jumped the shark for Leo.
• All of a sudden it became cheap, bandwidth, Skype, 30% audience outside US, 60 counties.
• Bad for advertisers, don't understand multi-national. But are slowly getting it.
• TWiT and similar audiences are now growing and "best sellers" are shrinking.
• Now FAT SHOE
• Getting fatter and fatter, but have to know how to work it and what it means.
• Starts with bloggers, always leeast expensive form. Now music, which is template for mass music.
• Jonathan Coulton is example. Sells out venue. Discovered new way of doing it.
• Builds community, doesn't sell ads, makes money of concerts.
• Promotors now ask for mailing list, website, community, band has to show they can fill seats.
• Pointy part of tail shrinks, less platinum artists, more Jonathan Colton.
• Makes a living, and soon will have platinum artists without record labels.
• Big blogs like HuffPo doing very well aggregating.
• Need large community but not too large -- need that niche.
• Conferences are changes. Now un-conference are most exciting. Everyone can contribute.
• Can be commenter (not Troll, though they unite commenters in defense/anti-body)
• Podcasting is kind of in trouble, reached largest number of listeners, not growing, most don't make money.
• Leo says don't care about money, podcast what you care about, build audince, let chips fall where they may.
• May not make living but time is coming where you can.
• Being on Twitter is creating content -- compelled to participate. Facebook the same, don't just read pages.
• Chat room is a way Leo tries to increase participation, wants to give people as many ways of communicating as possible.
• Knows it's working because when show ends, chat room keeps going.
• Evangelists have roll as well.
• Need to build that fat shoe.
• Content creators need to understand that they're also consumers.
• Consumers whant content where, when, and how they want it.
• TiVo changed TV, podcasts changed when you listent. Play when you want, pause when you want.
• What's missing is immediacy of community.
• Real time web is important.
• Beetles on Ed Sullivan. Everyone could talk about it next day. Lost via asynchronus on-demand consumption.
• But we want it all. That's what makes real-time web exciting.
• That's why Leo streams video, wants you to be real time.
• Bottom line, consumers want content.
• People spending more than ever before. Plenty of connsumption.
• Great news for content creators.
• Economy will make it harder to make money right now, but "good thing" is that it's hastening the end of old media.
• No print versions any more. If you want it -- you'll print it out.
• Forcing capital-intesive media to find new ways.
• Huge talent pools. CNN sorta gets this.
• What will happen for CNN is two things left: aggregate "our" content and editorialize
• Doesn't give CNN monopoly any more.
• You could do knitting or hard drive network -- more narrow is better.
• Deeper the niche the better.
• Problem is, when CNN was created, it was cheap compared to mass media, but now expensive compared to new media. Costs much more.
• Audience sizes for new media are now comparable, but better audience.
• THE TREND IS NOT THE TOOL
• People think its all about twitter, facebook, etc. but the tools will change.
• Friendster failed. Podcasting or blogging may not do well, but those are just tools.
• The way is towards active, highly engaged participants.
• Isn't that what we want?
• When socienty is disrupted, people withdraw. When industrialized, people turned to alcohol. Now mass media caused people to retreat to sitcoms -- same as Gin in London. Can't handle it. Too much.
• But we're now emerging and learning to deal with wash of info, love participating.
• Era of Mass Media was Mass Delusion. Crazy, money and economics of content. 100 years.
• Like JR in shower, just a dream. Now we're waking up.
• Burdon now is to participate. Will be tough times, but not a bad thing. Hasten death of old media, rise of new media.
• What's your role?
• Finding community of common interest is extrenely satisfying.
• Why watch Gilligan when you can create.
• Apple gave us great tools. Feels bad for Windows people but they went to CES...
• Windows people have to beat their head against wall to make 1 movie

Keynote users rejoice! As part of his Macworld Keynote today (see our MASSIVE Live Blog!), Phil Schiller announced a Keynote Remote App for the iPhone! Connect via WiFi and Boom! In portrait view you see your slide and notes. Rotate to landscape mode and you get current and next slide.

Where does the control come in? Where else! Swipe to switch slides!

The App (if approved, and not using any sneaky API's - haha!) will cost $0.99 and looks all shades of awesome.

We have the deets in photo on the new 17" MacBook with the ridiculously large 8 hours of battery life, the fact that iTunes is going 100% DRM-Free, the new iLife with GarageBand Music Lessons, iMovie's stunning upgrades, and iPhoto's geo-tagging and face-recognition, and also the new iWork with Keynote -- which now has an iPhone-based remote for switching slides and reading your notes.

Um, yeah, this was a huge Macworld for Mac people -- and the iTunes DRM news and the Keynote news were incredibly great upgrades for iPhone owners.

Makes you weep that Apple will never go to a Macworld again, don't it?

During his Macworld Keynote (see our MASSIVE Live blog!), Phil Schiller today announced the death of the iPhone (and iPod Touch) WiFi Music Store -- and the birth of the WiFi and 3G Music Store!

Yup, iPhone 3G users can now browser and directly download music over the data network for anywhere, anytime access to new music.

UPDATE: Daring Fireball says downloads work over 2G/EDGE as well!

It seems to already be working, and working in multiple countries (including Canada! Yay!)

Have you downloaded any music directly to your iPhone yet? How did it work for you?

Phil Schiller, during his Macworld Keynote (see our MASSIVE live blog!) today, announced -- as rumored -- that iTunes is going DRM-Free! 8 million songs will be available in higher-quality 256-bit, DRM-free iTunes Plus format immediately, the remaining 2 million or so songs following by the end of the quarter.

In order to wrestle this concession from Big Music, however, Apple had to give them a concession of their own: variable pricing. Apple had long resisted this policy, preferring the unified $0.99 model (a brief flirtation with $1.29 iTunes Plus pricing not withstanding). Today, however, Schiller announced a 3 tiered structure:

• $0.79 for older, catalog songs
• $0.99 for mid-tier
• $1.29 for premium (hot new singles?)

Upgrading will cost $0.30 per song, $060 per music videos, and whole albums for 30% of the album price.

So, is it working for you yet? And are you upgrading? Or just buying new song?

The fallout from Steve Jobs' no-show for Macworld 2009, and Apple's pull-out from all future Macworlds continues.

• First up, Arik Hesseldahl of BusinessWeek asks if Apple is ditching Macworld for CES. While many saner minds drafted up lengthy retorts, Daring Fireball nailed the one-punch-kill: "No."
• Daring Fireball also gives it's own perspective, that he not busy being born is busy dying: "Traditions are comforting. But comfort, I think, tends not to breed innovation. It can be hard to tell whether you’re staying the course because it’s the right direction, or because you’ve dug yourself into a deep rut."
• John Siracusa of Ars Technica suggests Apple's exit from Macworld is part of their "fearless" DNA: "Though painful and jarring in the short term, these kinds of moves are a big part of what makes Apple great. While other companies are paralyzed with indecision, or cling relentlessly to what has worked in the past, or are seduced by sentimentality, Apple is busy murdering its darlings. Though such dramatic moves often appear foolhardy to its more cautious competitors, Apple usually has the last laugh, working through the initial pain to find itself in a much better position down the road—a winning position."

• Andy Ihnatko, in the Chicago Sun-Times, thinks Apple may not have has anything with the iPhone or even MacBook Air Boom! factor ready: "The only products left were the Fredo Corleones of the family: the AppleTV and Mac Mini, which just sort of sit there on Apple's online store, unpromoted and unmourned."
• Daniel Eran Dilger of RoughlyDrafted thinks bigger picture, that tech trade shows are dead: "The problem for Apple is that the company doesn’t need to coordinate with IDG’s Macworld Expo in order to deliver [a Steve Jobs keynote.]"
• TidBITS' Tonya Engst focuses less on what's good for Apple, and more on what's good for the family, with a letter from mom: "Functional families have reunions and everyone comes if they possibly can. Your deciding not to come isn't okay, and you should reconsider. Aunt Lesa is in tears, Cousin Andy thinks that if you're not coming maybe he won't come either, and some of the more distant relatives are so fed up with your acting like a drama queen that they seem unlikely to support you the next time you hit hard times."
• In SFGate, David Bunnell, founder of the first Macworld, reminds us Steve Jobs wasn't there then either: "Later on, Sculley confided to me and to my partner, Bart Rhoades, that the first Macworld Expo had saved Apple. He complained that Jobs and his team were so burned out from getting the Mac out the door that they had accomplished virtually nothing since."
• Finally TUAW reports on Lesa Snider King's mad-at-Apple campaign: "If you're attending the Macworld Expo keynote on Tuesday, Jan. 6, you can send a message to Apple by remaining silent during the 2009 keynote. While Phil Schiller is on the stage, let there be no applause, no whistling... just utter and complete silence." Gruber one-punch-kills that one as well, via the Twitter.

So, are you mad at Apple and Steve Jobs? Do you understand where they're coming from? Do you understand and still glare in their general direction with a living hate?

The news is still fresh (and painful): No Steve-Note at this year's Macworld Expo an no Apple from next year on. Reaction over the intertubes has been fast and in some cases furious. Here's a quick sampling:

• Paul Kent of Macworld Expo responded with a non-response, which is probably all he really could do: "We look forward to many successful years of Macworld to come."
• Jason Snell of Macworld Magazine (same parent, different company) thinks it might be better for the show: "And yet every year, those same companies schlep out to San Francisco to announce their next big products—and find their announcements completely washed away by whatever Steve Jobs announced on Tuesday morning. Completely washed away."
• Jim Goldman of CNBC says the reasons are purely political, not health related: "Apple has been trying to separate itself from Macworld for some time, preferring instead to host its own "special events" a few times a year." (er... um, that sounds more strategic than political, but who are we to analyze people's headlines?)
• Jesus Diaz at Gizmodo says Apple has always wanted out of Macworld, but thinks no Steve-note is just one more step on Jobs' road to retirement: "The simplest explanation, following previous events, is that canceling MacWorld and having Phil Schiller to present it is just another part of His Plan. This doesn't mean that he is leaving the company tomorrow, however. it is just one more step towards that goal, as I explained back in October."

• Harry McCracken of Technologizer points out that we now get the battle of the second stringers: Ballmer instead of Gates at CES vs. Schiller instead of Jobs at Apple.
• BusinessWeek’s Peter Burrows cries health and asks: "Here we have a company with $27 billion in the bank, that gets massive, global exposure from a talk that rarely lasts two hours. If Apple can’t see the ROI in Macworld, what company can justify the tradeshow bill?"
• Macalope drives mythical horns into his carcass and points out the stupid is beginning with: "Apple gets “massive, global exposure” when it sneezes. They’re the perfect example of a company that doesn’t need a trade show. Why go to all this trouble when all people have to do to learn more about your products is wander into one of your stores or open up a newspaper?"
• Owen Thomas at ValleyWag speculates that Jobs' ultimate control freakishness is out of control, and was brought to a head by BusinessWeek's speculation: "Amidst that kind of worry, why would Jobs take the stage again? He'd have the fit of his jeans and the flushness of his cheeks debated on blogs in the kind of minute detail that used to be reserved for a new Apple laptop. Showing up in the wrong condition might be as bad for Apple as not showing up at all."
• John Gruber at Daring Fireball brings back a post from the archives after Apple cancelled its participation in Macworld Boston/New York: "So, to sum it up, the twice-yearly Expos (1) cost Apple millions of dollars; (2) put a lot of pressure on the company to make major product announcements on the Expos’ schedule, not when the products are actually ready; (3) are not under Apple’s direct control."
• Our own editor-in-chief, Dieter Bohn, worries that it will hurt the Mac community. The lack of Apple's participation could end the show, which would end an important venue for face-to-face time for new developers, smaller vendors, and the new generation of starry-eyed Apple fans just getting into the ecosystem.
• TiPb couldn't help but notice Jobs and Apple bailed right after the DevTeam announced they'd soft-unlocked the iPhone 3G. Coincidence? Or "Apple announces that if you're not going to play nice with their iPhone Platform, they're going to take their conference and go home"
• Lastly, some dark humor, pointing out Apple's next big move: Canceling Christmas.

And lo, Steve Jobs opened the 7th seal, and there was silence at Macworld.

Apple just made it official folks, Phil Schiller will be presenting the Keynote, and after that, Apple will no longer be attending Macworld, leaving WWDC as possibly the only show big left for Apple and Steve Jobs.

Is this the end of an era, or the beginning of something new? Does no Steve-note mean no Macworld for anyone? What will this do to expectations? And will it make Apple's "special events" even more special?

In 2007 Steve Jobs strode up onto the Macworld stage, rehashed the Apple TV for a bit, then dropped the shot heard around the consumer electronic universe: iPhone.

In 2008, it was Time Capsule, an iPhone OS update, Apple TV Take 2, and the MacBook Air.

And in 2009?

Er... um... we're not even sure he's going to be there, according to Businessweek (via MacRumors):

Update: 2:30 PM EST: Now Paul Kent is clarifying his statement. Here it is verbatim: “We haven’t made an announcement yet. We hope to in the next two weeks.” Rather than clearing the picture up, it just got muddy again.

Previous years, there's been an announcement roughly a month before hand. We've blown that soft deadline this time around.

One concern is that Apple may have no big announcements to make. Mac Pro, MacBook Pro 17", Mac Mini, and Apple TV are all due refreshes, maybe even iMacs, but none of those are iPhone or MacBook Air type sexay. Apple could drop an iPhone Nano or an iTablet, but those are seen as longshots.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard is almost a certainty, but while it includes Grand Central and Open CL, for consumers, it's "no new features".

But is Jobs giving a less than 'verse denting keynote worse than him not showing up at all, generating more panic about his health and Apple's confidence in the market, especially with Adobe already having pulled out of their booth?

With Macworld fast approaching, the rumor rate should begin increasing exponential. iTablets will be hot once again, of course, as will the iPhone Nano. Says MacRumors:

[iDealsChina] claims the product will be announced at Macworld San Francisco 2009. iDealsChina, however, has a very mixed track record. In August, it passed off renderings of knock-off iPod clones as the real thing and also claimed that the new iPod Touch would have GPS (it did not). The site, however, did previously have access to Griffin case moldings that appeared to be real. The sizes could correlate with smaller touch screen photographs that iLounge published in June.

MacRumors thinks such an iPhone Nano may break App compatibility with the existing iPhone and iPod Touch due to screen size and resolution. Shrinking the screen down using a higher DPI, like the iPod Nano would lessen part of the problem (though hitting tinier capacitive touch targets would no doubt be an interesting exercise in frustration).

MacRumors is passing on... well... rumors from MacBlogz of a 32GB iPhone! Says MacRumors:

The reason the largest iPhone (16GB) currently has 1/2 the memory of the largest iPod touch (32GB) is that the iPhone can only house a single NAND Flash chip while the iPod touch can accommodate two. The additional space in the iPhone is taken up by its communication hardware. In August, Toshiba announced that they would begin mass production of higher density 32GB chips in the 4th quarter of 2008.

Intel, they go on to say, may well bump the capacity even further -- to a startling 64GB -- by early next year. Sound crazy? Heh. With Macworld coming in just over a month, we ain't seen nothing yet on the rumor front.

Still, 32GB is drool worthy, and something we here at TiPb are predicting for next year as part of a third generation iPhone HD, so you know we wants it.

How about you? Is 16GB enough, or is it always going to be a case of the more, the better?

Daring Fireball links to a translation of a Swedish MacWorld rumor (Google translation) that quotes Telia as saying as MMS app would soon be available for the iPhone. Phew! Broken telephone much? Tries to clarify Gruber:

Not sure if this means Telia is writing their own MMS iPhone app, or if they’re suggesting that Apple is adding MMS support to the system software. I haven’t seen any reports of MMS support in the iPhone OS 2.2 betas.

Could this be a surprise feature? Personally, I never use it. I prefer device independent protocols like email and IM to handle my communications, but I know many of my fellow TiPbsters are still dying to get their multi-touch on this baby, so what do you think?

Apple bringing it? Telia? And if so, would other carriers like AT&T follow suit with MMS apps of their own? Do we want that kind of fragmentation, after it's taken so long to get even the little interoperability that currently exists?

I spend a healthy portion of my time at Macworld doing the following:

1. Thinking about Google's fixation on the iPhone and
2. Looking for a really good iPhone dock / Alarm clock.

...Keeping the iPhone in a dock by your bed seems like a no-brainer - charges it up, lets you play a song from your library to wake you up, maybe even lets you catch a quick movie before you fall asleep. Right? Apparently it does all of those things except the last part - the falling asleep part:

A study in Sweden and the United States finds that using a cell phone just before bedtime interferes with sleep patterns. - study

The deal is that the radiation from cell phone radios gets into your head and prevents you from getting into a deep sleep pattern. If it ain't deep sleep, it don't count. So maybe leaving that dock on the desk, next to your computer, and far from your sensitive squishy brain is the right idea after all.

Besides Google (much more on that tomorrow, stay tuned!), there weren't a lot of "iPhone Web Apps" booths. Actually, none that I can remember. What there are a ton of at Macworld are accessories booths. Clearly the accessory market for the iPhone is ramping up quickly and may even near iPod accessory market status sometime soon.

...But it's not there yet. Case in point, I saw probably a dozen different iPod speaker docks -- all of which were "compatible" with the iPhone in flight mode only. Apple is requiring (and rightfully so, I suppose) that accessory makers submit their accessories for their seal of approval, iPhone-wise, so that the dreaded GSM-interference issue is taken care of. I personally wish Apple had managed to handle that on the device rather than forcing companies trying to interact with the Dock connector to re-make their products, but c'est la vie.

Otherwise, the thing to see, iPhone-wise, is cases. There are more skin cases here than you could shake a stick at, but there are some other gems as well. After the break, our three favorite cases at Macworld 2008.

Bodyguardz

Best case of the show has to go to Bodyguardz. Their booth was small, but it was absolutely mobbed. Probably because they were offering a Macworld-only special. Bodyguardz are simple, transparent films pre-cut to fit your iPhone. There are others like them, of course, but these seem quite a bit better than the competition. iLounge agrees, they named Bodyguardz the best of '07.

First off, each package comes with two sets of films for your iPhone, in case you muck up the application or if you want to replace your films later. They also come with a decent set of instructions, the application solution spray bottle, and a squeegee to apply the film.

The iPhone may be durable, but it's not invincible. The Bodyguardz makes your iPhone absolutely key-proof without adding any bulk at all. It also is a sight less slippery than the iPhone itself, to boot.

...and yep, the Phone different store sells 'em for $24.95.

Speck

When I die, it's highly likely that I'll want to be buried with my Timbuk2 Commute Messenger Bag. The thing is attached to my shoulder pretty much any time I'm standing up. So when I was perusing the gobs of iPhone cases at Macworld, I was keeping a special eye out for something I could attach to the shoulder strap of my messenger bag. Speck came to my rescue - their TransPort get the #2 in our Best-Of-Macworld.

They announced the TransPort iPhone case at Macworld. Awkward capitalization aside, it's a great case. It's designed to fit on any shoulder strap by way of large velcro flaps. The iPhone itself slides into a hard plastic holder that firmly keeps the iPhone in place, facing out.

The case also has a removable front-flap that flips down to use the iPhone but generally is meant to protect it from the dangers of urban life. Basically it's the perfect bike-rider's iPhone case.

The downside to the case is that it's not very useful away from a messenger bag, but that didn't really bug me too much -- as I said, my bag is always so close at hand that it's not a big problem for me.

The TransPort case isn't available for purchase yet and Speck couldn't comment on pricing.

Seidio

Rounding out our Best of Macworld is Seidio's Inno.Case -- Speck may randomly capitalize letters inside words, but Seidio one-ups them by adding a period inside words. Take that!

Ahem. The Innocase is a very neat little plastic hard case for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. I like it because it features the ever-popular "rubberized soft touch" feel that makes it very grippable. The Innocase adds very little bulk to the iPhone, but enough that it wouldn't fit in the standard iPhone dock. Seidio handily solves that problem by making the portion on the bottom snap off, as you can see in the first picture below.

Really, though, what caught my eye were the colors - the red and the blue versions are very slick. You can't tell from the pictures below, but the red and blue are a little "metallic" and have the sort of "depth and complexity" of color that make me wish I could actually write about color intelligently. Kudos, Seidio.

The Innocase is also not available yet, but should be in February.

Macally just announced the FlexTune, which is one of the very few iPod docks available right now that is also fully compatible with the iPhone. That's to say, it doesn't suggest you go into Flight Mode to protect the speakers from GSM interference. Otherwise it's a fairly standard set of iPod speakers - charges and is compatible with all iPods, medium-to-medium-low quality sound and volume, has a line-in on the back.

The FlexTune's trick is that its speakers slide out - meaning you can mount the iPhone vertically or horizontally. It's a little wonky to slide the speakers out and insert the iPhone, but not too bad. That wonkiness might be that Macally had a pre-production unit on the show floor -- the real deal will be available in February for the fairly low price of $59.99

The new 1.1.3 update to the iPhone's software is pretty incredible. As we just mentioned in the Liveblog of the Steve Jobs Keynote, there are several new features that were announced:

• Maps with Location
• Webclips on your homescreen
• Customization of your homescreen
• ...and more, including lyrics, support for iTunes movie rentals, and the ability to SMS multiple people at once.

We got the jump on the iPod Touches on the show floor to get a firsthand look at the new features. After the break, our hands-on video with the new iPhone software (as seen on the iPod Touch).

Maps

The new find location feature works surprisingly quickly (about 10 seconds here at Macworld) and is a great new feature. Also nice are some subtle touches like the "eyeball button" that flips up different viewing options.

Safari and Web Clipping

I appreciate that Safari now just has a giant "plus" button at the bottom for the various things you might want to do with a webpage -- bookmark it, email it, or add it to the home screen. The web clipping feature is very useful -- I especially the nice touch of making the icon on the home screen a thumbnail version of what you've zoomed in on is also slick.

Although I was a little leery of the "jiggy effect" early on, I will admit that it's a very slick way to let you know that you're in a "move stuff around" state instead of a "open stuff now" state. It's also well done - you can drag an icon to the edge of the screen to move it to the next page. Well done, Apple.

....All in all, we're very happy about the update. Our only regret: email still feels underpowered and we also feel pretty bad for current iPod Touch owners, who must pay $20 to get the improved software.

We grabbed a quick look at the ultrathin MacBook Air, just released during Steve Jobs' 2008 Macworld Keynote. The MacBook Air is a pretty sweet little guy - it's ridiculously thin yet full-powered. Our only regret is that it has only 1(!) USB port. Oh, and the little fact that you can't replace the battery. Isn't that kind of a must for a laptop? We smell an accessory opportunity.

Otherwise - the hotness, even at $1799. A quick video of the gigantic crowd fondling the device above.

The MacBook Air is "the world's thinnest notebook." It's ridiculously thin - .76 inches on the back and .16 inches at the front. It fits inside a manilla envelope - Jobs has one in an envelope now! It is INSANELY thin. UNNATURALLY thin. It has a full sized keyboard and display.

it has a 13.3, LED-backlit display. There is, of course, a built-in iSight camera. There is also a full-sized keyboard, "perhaps the best notebook keyboard we've ever shipped." And yes, it's also backlit.

The "very generous trackpad" now supports multitouch. There are even short videos explaining how the multitouch trackpad works on the MacBook Air.

It does indeed sport a hard disk - a 1.8" hard drive, same as in the iPod. It has an 80gig as standard, you can also get a 64gb Solid State drive. The electronics, "a complete mac on a board" are tiny. The processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.6GHz is standard, you can go 1.8 GHz as well. The chip is 60% smaller than a standard 1.6GHz chip, and so Jobs has invited Intel CEO Paul Otellini to thank him for that incredible chip.

New feature: Remote Disk -- allows you to use another computer's optical drive to install software over the network. It's an incredibly neat idea. Otherwise you can buy a USB superdrive for $99.

Apple claims that under medium to heavy usage you can get five hours of battery life.

Jobs notes how everybody has tried and failed to get movies off the internet onto a widescreen TV. He admits that Apple TV was a miss as well, that people really want Movies, not an accessory for your computer.

The new interface on Apple TV is really slick - the shopping experience of looking for movies, music, and TV shows on your television seems very intuitive and fun. You can also browse and download any podcast in the iTunes podcast directory. Browsing photos is easy too - despite the fact that Flickr refused to serve up photos for Steve.

It's a free software upgrade! .....AND they're droped the price to $229. It will all be available in 2 weeks.

Jm Gianopulos, Chairman and CEO of 20th Century Fox, has announced that going forward, their DVDs will come with a "digital copy" that you can use in iTunes or on your iPhone.

They've sold 4 Billion songs, 125 million TV shows, and 7 million movies. However, that 7 million mark is lower than they'd prefer. So today, Jobs has announced iTunes Movies Rentals.

On board - every major movie studio! Steve presented them with a "and by the way." They will launch with 1000 films by the end of February. They will be on iTunes 30 days after their DVD release. You can watch on iPhone.

You can also start watching within 30 seconds of downloading. You have 30 days to begin watching, then once it starts you have 24 hours to watch it. You can also transfer even as you're watching.

Older titles will be $2.99, new releases are 3.99. It launches today and free software updates are available for all compatible devices (iTunes, iPods, and iPhones)!

Movie rentals will also be available in HD quality for $1.00 more (That's $3.99 for DVD quality and $4.99 for HD quality). You can also shop for these movies directly from your television with Apple TV 2.

It's a $20 upgrade to existing iPod Touch users - you can get

The new software will be preloaded in new Touches, but the cost is disappointing to current Touch users.

Steve jobs announced several new iPhone features in the keynote at Macword, including:

• Maps with location
• Webclips
• Customize Home screens
• SMS multiple people at once
• Chapters, subtitles, and languages in videos
• display of lyrics

The features fall very much in line with the previously leaked 1.1.3 update.

The new Google maps not only does location, but it also allows you to edit routes and add "pins" to the maps anywhere you like.

The SMS client allows you to send to multiple people, and the "thread" you create allows you to re-send to that same group multiple times.

There is a new "plus button" at the bottom of Mobile safari. Merely by tapping that "plus" button you can add any web shortcut to your home screen. Even better - web clips remember where you've zoomed and panned to - to customize the thumbnail on the home screen.

Jobs also confirmed the moving icons around the home screen does indeed use the "jiggly method," which clearly indicates to the user that you're in "re-arrange" mode.

The software update is available today and for free!

On US Smartphone marketshare, the quarter ending in September, In its first 90 days of shipping it garnered nearly 20% of the smarpthone marketshare. They nearly equaled Palm, Motorola, and Nokia combined. Jobs expects they'll do even better when the December numbers come out.

At today's keynote, Steve Jobs announced "Time Capsule." It's a full Airport Extreme base station that also includes a "server-grade hard drive." It is meant for wireless backups for notebooks. Time Capsule runs on 802.11n.

The 500gb drive version is only $299. The 1 terrabye model is $499. It will ship in February. "It's the perfect companion product to Time Machine."

4 things to talk about today.

Thing 1: Leopard. They've solved over 5 million copies. Steve is talking about Leopard's capabilities, its accolades over Vista. Microsoft Office is going native on Intel. It was Time Capsule

Thing 2: iPhone!

Google gone and got itself all dolled up for Macworld. I'm a big fan of the new tabs and an even bigger fan of the new http://igoogle.com, which is pretty much the only web portal I've ever bothered with (besides, of course, just the plain jane Google page). They take full advantage of Safari's capabilities with neat AJAXification throughout. If you're a Google user (and you know you are) and if you're an iPhone user (and you're here so that's likely true too), it's worth a look-see. There's other improvements, including:

As long as we're talking Google, check out this Christmas miracle:

The New York Times reports that, based on internal data from Google, more iPhones were connecting during Christmas than any other mobile device, despite the fact that industry figures show only two percent of smartphones worldwide as belonging to Apple. A few days after Christmas, iPhone traffic dropped below that of phones using the Nokia-backed Symbian operating system, but kept a second-place ranking. - Electronista | Google gains iPhone traffic, updates apps

...Looks like more than a few lucky folks received an iPhone for Christmas, no? That's one benefit of Apple's non-standard activation agreement - it's a heck of a lot easier to gift an iPhone than it is any other phone in the US.

It happens every year lately - a day or two before the big Keynote, some tiny site¹ claims to have the outline of what Steve Jobs will announce. The supposed goods on the iPhone: 16gb at $499 (really going on a limb there), arrival in Japan in March, and the unveiling of the SDK. A full unveiling, actually, with lots of details.

All of which are pretty safe bets.

The internet is all abuzz over the latest Macworld rumor - AppleInsider has spotted Apple banners with the slogan "There's something in the air." My guess hope is something rather less revolutionary than WiMAX Apple devices or a 3G iPhone - both of which I consider very unlikely. WiMAX is just not widespread enough yet and too much of it is controlled by Sprint and Clearwire. No way Apple is going to get in bed with Sprint given their relationship with AT&T, and Clearwire is just too small.

Instead, I'm hoping for .Mac services on the iPhone. Radically improved .Mac services have been something I've wanted to a long time. What I'd really like: Google services integration, iWeb mobloggling from the iPhone, and access to .Mac's online storage. Please Please.

Apple has just announced new updates to the Mac Pro and Xserve lines. Both have received significant processor upgrades. Why is this good news for iPhone fans - well Apple is making some of the announcements many predicted for Macworld now. There's only one reason they would do that, and it's not that Apple likes to keep things spicy. No, it's that they'll need to make room for other product announcements. Since both the Mac Pro and the Xserve are "pro" machines, one assumes that the announcements at Macworld will be for consumers.
