Google has just released Currents, their post-Flipboard take on the news reader, which brings your favorite RSS feeds, video streams, public Google + posts together with over 150 publishing partners. Reading content in Google Currents is just as easy, if not easier than viewing it all over the web, and it is free.

Unfortunately it is only available in the US, so not everyone can take part in it just yet.

Magazines starting to hit iOS 5 Newsstand a day early?

9to5Mac got a tip that Apple has started allowing downloadable content from magazine publishers into the new iOS 5 Newsstand app. Right now it seems like only Wired and GQ, but more are sure to follow as tomorrow's iOS 5 launch approaches.

We're still waiting on the likes of The New York Times, SF Chronicle, Daily Telegraph and many more. Magazine publishers are jumping on board too, with National Geographic, SPIN, Conde Nast, Nylon, The Telegraph, GQ Esquire etc.,

Anyone else manage to nab a newspaper or magazine in Newsstand yet?

"Project" Magazine for iPad launching tomorrow [video]

Richard Branson's new digital magazine for the iPad, dubbed Project launches tomorrow:

Project is the very first international magazine created specifically for the iPad. It’s a magazine about design, entertainment, technology and entrepreneurs, and is edited by Anthony Noguera, former editor-in-chief of FHM.

The magazine will be purely digital, offering up content in a "living magazine" format that will be updated throughout the month, and plays to the iPad's strengths in delivering an intuitive and asthetically pleasing UI for a completely immersive user-experience unlike any other magazine available. The idea is for users to treat Project as a daily reading experience, instead of a 'read once then throw away' model carried by current magazine offerings.

The video below only shows the magazine's front cover, and we're not yet sure if this animated experience will extend to the actual pages and articles themselves. The app should be available in the App Store tomorrow.

With News Corp. prepping to launch a rumored iPad-only newspaper in the coming months, it will be interesting to see how quickly these new services gain initial adoption.

Any readers looking forward to this new magazine experience? Sound off in the comments below!

Gourmet Live for iPad- app review

I noticed Gourmet Live in the App Store for iPad and I thought I would give it a try. I have to admit, I have not been much of a foodie for most of my life. But, as I get older, it is just fun to create awesome meals for friends and family. Gourmet Live is different than other magazine-type apps on the App Store. For starters, the Magazine is online (only 1.9MB to download); you need an Internet connection to get to your content. The app seemed to download content in the background when you launch it, then makes all of it available for offline use. Slick, I like it.

Wired brings their magazine to the iPad

At over 5ooMB, Wired's iPad app arrives in the App Store and yes, the future of magazine reading appears to arrive with it!

Last November we gave a sneek-peek at Wired's concept for a magazine on a tablet. That demo was in Adobe's Flash. The new version is 100% Flash free and is beautiful.

Navigating the magazine is a breeze; tap on the screen and you are given overlayed navigation tools. The bottom scrolls through pages and the top has two options- zoom out and a vertical list of articles in the issue.

There is plenty of interactive content too. Videos from the upcoming Toy Story movie and 3D real-time models of Mars and a Lego Lamborghini. With this awesome content and interactivity comes a price; $4.99 an issue. Is it worth it? Let us know in comments! Check screenshots after the break!

Quick App: GQ Magazine

There is a lot of buzz around magazines coming to the iPad, what about the iPhone? GQ Magazine already has an app for that and it's rather slick. The app is free and you can buy issues with in-app purchasing for $1.99 a piece. Once the app is installed you have a store to buy your issue. The issues are quite large, so you will want to likely download them over Wi-Fi to easy your viewing pleasure.

Once you downloaded and opened an issue, you are presented with a table of contents. Tap the section you want to read. Depending on the section there are links to pictures, video and font size. Rotate your device to landscape and you are given a virtual representation of the print issue. You can use the slider on the bottom to navigate. I really like this feature, you get the best of both worlds; portrait for an optimized iPhone view and rotate for magazine view.

I am impressed with this effort on the iPhone and I am looking forward to an iPad version. Check after the break for more pics!

Time Magazine Ranks the Moto Droid Ahead of the iPhone 3GS

Time magazine has made the Motorola Droid its number 1 gadget of the year while our beloved iPhone ranked in at number 4 behind the Barnes & Noble Nook e-reader, and the Dyson Air Multiplier. What pushed the Droid to the top of the heap of these gadgets was the combination of its Motorola hardware and Android 2.0 software.
