NSFW: Net neutrality, the FCC, and the future of the Internet

Net neutrality is the simple idea that data on the Internet should be treated equally, regardless of where it comes from or where it goes to. It's a pretty simple idea, and pretty straightforward. So why is it being bludgeoned by both sides in Washington as a political weapon?

Everyone's had that experience where you're promised something, and when you get it, what you get doesn't live up to your expectations. That's the way I've been feeling with OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.

Now that it's November, it's officially the start of NaNoWriMo — National Novel Writing Month. Once again I'm going to be on the sidelines, though I alternately envy and pity those participating. NaNoWriMo has me thinking about the act of writing and how technology plays into it, both for me and for countless others.

NSFW: Shut up about the new Mac mini, already

I've seen endless bitching in blogs and social media about the new Mac mini Apple unveiled last week. So much so that I've seen some people recommending that you forget about the new Mac mini all together and get the older model if you can find it. That's incredibly stupid, because it ignores the actual needs of a lot of people who buy these things. Let me explain.

NSFW: GamerGate fallout, knee-jerk Yosemite upgrades, iPad names and more

The fallout from last week's #GamerGate pillorying of Brianna Wu continues into this week. On Monday I shared my thoughts with you, and regretfully (if sadly predictably), a few folks in the comments declared that I was a "social justice warrior" for daring to suggest that we can disagree about things without resorting to threats of rape and murder. Like that's a bad thing.

If that's the case, then I wear the badge proudly.

Wow. There is some crazy stuff happening on the Internet this week, and I don't even know where to begin. A friend of mine was threatened with rape and murder on Friday night. That's probably where to start.

iOS 8 has been out for a few weeks now, and I've been hearing a similar complaint come from quite a few users: They can't install it because it's too big. Is that their fault, or is it Apple's?

At the end of Apple's recent iPhone 6 and Apple Watch event, Tim Cook had one more surprise up his sleeve: U2's new album, Songs of Innocence, would be available to every iTunes Store customer in more than 100 countries, completely free. Many people are happy for the new album, but it's created an equal amount of controversy. It's just a free album, folks. Settle down.

In August Robin Williams killed himself. This week Joan Rivers died. Now many people are hauling out the Rule of Threes trope, wondering which comedian is going to die next. If you want to watch a comic die, just go to open mike night! cymbal crash Thank you, ladies and germs, I'll be here all week. Tip your waiter and try the veal.

NSFW: The September Apple Event, Kremlinology and blind luck

Apple sent out invitations to journalists to attend a special event in September, ostensibly where the company will announce the iPhone 6. The second the first image of the invite hit the Internet, the Kremlinologists jumped into action to dissect it, trying to attach meaning to whatever they could. And that's about when my head hit the desk in frustration.
