NSFW: Shut up about the new Mac mini, already

NSFW is a weekly op-ed column in which I talk about whatever's on my mind. Sometimes it'll have something to do with the technology we cover here on iMore; sometimes it'll be whatever pops into my head. Your questions, comments and observations are welcome.

I've seen endless bitching in blogs and social media about the new Mac mini Apple unveiled last week. So much so that I've seen some people recommending that you forget about the new Mac mini all together and get the older model if you can find it. That's incredibly stupid, because it ignores the actual needs of a lot of people who buy these things. Let me explain.

NSFW: GamerGate fallout, knee-jerk Yosemite upgrades, iPad names and more

The fallout from last week's #GamerGate pillorying of Brianna Wu continues into this week. On Monday I shared my thoughts with you, and regretfully (if sadly predictably), a few folks in the comments declared that I was a "social justice warrior" for daring to suggest that we can disagree about things without resorting to threats of rape and murder. Like that's a bad thing.

If that's the case, then I wear the badge proudly.

Wow. There is some crazy stuff happening on the Internet this week, and I don't even know where to begin. A friend of mine was threatened with rape and murder on Friday night. That's probably where to start.

iOS 8 has been out for a few weeks now, and I've been hearing a similar complaint come from quite a few users: They can't install it because it's too big. Is that their fault, or is it Apple's?

At the end of Apple's recent iPhone 6 and Apple Watch event, Tim Cook had one more surprise up his sleeve: U2's new album, Songs of Innocence, would be available to every iTunes Store customer in more than 100 countries, completely free. Many people are happy for the new album, but it's created an equal amount of controversy. It's just a free album, folks. Settle down.

In August Robin Williams killed himself. This week Joan Rivers died. Now many people are hauling out the Rule of Threes trope, wondering which comedian is going to die next. If you want to watch a comic die, just go to open mike night! cymbal crash Thank you, ladies and germs, I'll be here all week. Tip your waiter and try the veal.

NSFW: The September Apple Event, Kremlinology and blind luck

NSFW is a weekly op-ed column in which I talk about whatever's on my mind. Sometimes it'll have something to do with the technology we cover here on iMore; sometimes it'll be whatever pops into my head. Your questions, comments and observations are welcome.

Apple sent out invitations to journalists to attend a special event in September, ostensibly where the company will announce the iPhone 6. The second the first image of the invite hit the Internet, the Kremlinologists jumped into action to dissect it, trying to attach meaning to whatever they could. And that's about when my head hit the desk in frustration.

Wil Wheaton — the actor who portrayed teen prodigy Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation — has had a second career as an Internet celebrity (he's also parlayed it into guest spots on TV shows like The Big Bang Theory and his own show on the SyFy Channel). There's an axiom named after him: "Wheaton's Law," which states, "Don't be a dick." It's short and to the point. And it's a really good guide for behavior both online and off, and I really wish more people would pay attention to it.

NSFW: Your Mac is not a toilet

A note to Mac users: Stop letting your pets and your kids use them as toilets.

I really don't know what the hell is wrong with people, but in the store I work in, I've seen a few Macs come in in really sorry shape.

One iMac came in for repair because it stopped booting. It was a major equipment failure caused by overheating. The convection vents at the top were completely blocked. That prevented the fans inside the iMac from venting the hot air.
