The truth about jailbreaking and the jailbreak community

Lately we've been seeing a lot of rumors about iOS 5 and whether over-the-air updates will affect the ability to jailbreak. Regardless, I think there are some misconceptions about the Jailbreak community being spread around the blogsphere lately, even as link-bait or and well-intentioned rebuttals that take the bait and provide the links.

This isn't that. I'm not going to reward negative attention seeking. I'm just going to reiterate why I think jailbreak greatly benefits all iOS users, Jailbreak and otherwise, and trust people are smart enough and critical enough to read all the opinions and decide for themselves.

iOS 5 revamps iOS notifications

It looks as if the Apple Gods have answered some of our notification gripes. iOS 5 will bring with it revamped notifications. It looks as if there's a reason Apple hired Peter Hajas as it looks a heck of a lot like MobileNotifier. I've had revamped notifications in my jailbreak to stock want list for a long while.

Apple hires MobileNotifier developer Peter Hajas

It looks like Apple has recently hired Peter Hajas, lead developer behind the popular iOS jailbreak tweak MobileNotifier, as an "iOS Apps & Frameworks" employee.

Hajas announced his departure from development on MobileNotifier in a blog post ending with a reference to Steve Jobs' closing remarks at his 2005 Stanford commencement speech saying "stay hungry and stay foolish". This tipped off iPhone Download Blog who speculated he may be heading to Apple, and sure enough he's been confirmed as an intern at their Cupertino headquarters.

MobileNotifier is a great start to what iOS notifications should be [jailbreak]

MobileNotifier is a great start to what iOS notifications should really look like. Keep in mind this app is still in beta before you go replacing LockInfo. I've been playing with MobileNotifier today and it's got a lot of potential.

One thing I really like is the ingenious way MobileNotifier makes use of the wasted space while multitasking. When the tray is pulled up, the top of the screen is really just a bunch of empty space. Why not make use of it? MobileNotifier does by putting all your notifications in it. The latest beta also adds support for a lockscreen mode. The app doesn't currently have any built-in settings but we'll have to keep in mind it's an early release of the app.

With an early release comes compatibility issues and bugs. BiteSMS currently doesn't seem to want to populate in MobileNotifier for me. Hopefully this and several other compatibility issues will be addressed in a future beta. Hit the jump for a couple more screens and to find out how you can grab MobileNotifier!
