Apple has acquired Chomp, a search and discovery app for the iPhone that helps users find the best-of-the-best apps in the App Store. Apple plans to utilize Chomp's proprietary algorithms and technology to improve discoverability and user experience, presumably both on the mobile and desktop versions of the App Store.

Apple completes acquisition of flash memory company Anobit

Apple has reportedly completed the purchase of NAND flash memory maker Anobit.

Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, said today that the purchase had been made, while declining to elaborate. The statement confirmed a December report from in the Israeli newspaper Cacalist.

App Store making big big inroads in China

Market research firm Distimo has issued a new report suggesting the App Store made huge gains in the China market in 2011. According to the report, China held just 18 percent of sales compared to the U.S. market at the beginning of the year, but by November 2011, downloads jumped all the way up to 30 percent. Apple also recently started allowing App Store purchases to be paid in Chinese yuan, which should add an additional boost to sales in the Chinese market as well.

Nuance acquiring voice-recognition app maker Vlingo

Nuance Communications, makers Dragon Dictation and the voice recognition technology behind Siri in the iPhone 4S, have agreed to purchase competitor Vlingo.

Nuance Communications Inc. agreed to buy Vlingo Inc. in a deal that gives the developer of voice- command technology a system that can respond to spoken words with actions such as Internet searches.
