One of my favorite apps from my days using Palm OS was BugMe! Back in the day, it offered functionality that the Palm OS did not have in its Memo/Notes applications. You can pick up BugMe in the app store for a deal [$0.99 - iTunes Link]. Let’s take a look at what BugMe! For iPhone has to offer.

BugMe! is setup to have a cork board-like interface where you can stick your notes and rearrange them in any order you like.  From the launch screen you can view and rearrange your notes as you want by tapping and holding. You can tap the “New Note” button to create a new note. Once created, you have several options available to you:

• Ink or eraser
• Change ink thickness
• Change note color and add an image to the note
• Share note (email, Twitter, Home Screen, Photo Album)
• Alarm

Another nice feature is the ability to set custom alarms with push notifications. This can come in really handy if you jot down a quick note and need to be reminded later.

I  like this 1.x release of BugMe!. It is simple and fun, but lacks some features such as resizable notes (ya just can’t fit in a lot of the release given, even with a smaller ink size) and options to not size-to-fit images you place on a note. Other than that, if you are looking for a simple ink note app for your iPhone, BugMe! fits the bill! Lots of pictures after the break!

It’s been a long time coming, but instant messaging client, Meebo, [iTunes Link - Free] has finally made it into the App Store. The last time TiPb mentioned Meebo was back in 2008 when Chad reviewed their web app. Since then, several other IM apps have become popular. What does Meembo have to offer?

While the UI could use a little work, it does have all of the bells and whistles imaginable to compete with with the current crop of IM client top contenders.

The 2010 Winter Olympics officially began yesterday and if you want to keep up with your country to see how well they are performing, the NBC Olympics Mobile app [iTunes Link - Free] for iPhone and iPod touch is a great companion piece that offers a ton of great features.

If cartoon violence is something you love, then Doodle Army [$0.99 - iTunes Link] might be right up your alley. It provides more comical 2D side-scrolling cartoon action than any other game I’ve found in the App Store.

The object is simple — keep progressing while disabling all of the attacking stick figures. You start out with four different locations, including Boot Camp, Rice Paddy, Beach Bunker, and Sand Dune. 25 different weapons are at your disposal that will vary by location. Weapons such as a pistol, shotgun, assault rifle, machine gun, grenade launcher, and even flame thrower are all included. You are even given a choice of control style with two different options, shooting at tap/drag or use of an onscreen dial.

At the end of the day, Doodle Army is a pretty decent game for the money. It provides you with some nice variability with the included weapons and landscapes which will help keep your interest in playing. If you are a fan of 2D side scrolling games along with a low price price, Doodle Army is worth checking out.

If you have been searching for a fresh instant messaging client, we have good news for you — eBuddy Pro [iTunes Link - $4.99] is quite a solid performer. For the price, you get a very respectable instant messaging client with a ton of great features that rivals those of higher priced apps.

We are very aware that this application may not be for all of our readers, but for those of you who are horror movie fanatics, N.O.T.L.D. [$0.99 - iTunes Link] is an app for you. Never again will you have to leave your home without your very own copy of George Romero’s 1968 ‘zombie’ classic, Night of the Living Dead.

This app includes the original and alternate movie posters, a streaming version of the movie which is broken down in chapters (streams perfectly fine on AT&T’s 3G data network), and an wiki page detailing anything you’d like to know about this classic films history.

If you have never watched a horror classic such as this and you enjoy good horror flicks, I highly recommend checking this film out and why not view it directly on your iPhone?!

MMA Underground [$1.99 - iTunes Link] brings your daily fix of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) news to the iPhone and iPod touch. If you are fan like Rene and myself, there’s finally a worthwhile application that has elbowed it’s way into the App Store, and it sports some great features.

• Breaking MMA and UFC news
• Fighters record search – Name a fighter and he/she is here. Over 250,000 fighters in total with a full fight history and detailed information.
• Upcoming event information such as fight cards, results, etc…

Wish you could be strapped in free riding down the mountain at any given moment? Now you can as Ubisoft along with Advanced Mobile Applications have released Shaun White Snowboarding: Origins [iTunes Link - $4.99] for iPhone and iPod touch.

With excellent 3D graphics and touch controls, you can choose from four different characters to snowboard with at destinations around the world including USA, Chile, Japan, and Spain. Each playable character has their own unique control, trick or speed specialties. Once you have your player selected you will be introduced to the snowboarding world with a tutorial by White and then you are on your own. 50 or so tricks can be pulled off, including ollies, flips and grabs. As you progress you can earn unlockable content, such as real-life snowboarding footage of White and friends by earning various achievements.

To add a ton of replay value you get various game modes such as one freestyle option, and three that make use of a ghost feature. Now toss in leaderboards, and Twitter and Facebook connections and you have yourself a nice little game.

The widely popular Super Monkey Ball for iPhone and iPod touch now has a sequel, Super Monkey Ball 2 [$9.99 - iTunes link] – featuring multiplayer!

The original Super Monkey Ball was first shown off by SEGA during Apple’s iPhone SDK Roadmap event back in March 2008 and was one of the first games to launch with iPhone 2.0 and the App Store. How does the sequel hold up? In the short time I’ve spent playing, I am very impressed by the graphics, butter-smooth controls, and fun music. Super Monkey Ball 2 includes 115 tracks and one mini-game, Monkey Bowling, with promise of Monkey Golf and Monkey Target in a future upgrade.

One of the most exciting new features of Super Monkey Ball 2 is multiplayer mode. Just hop onto a local wifi network and play against as many as 3 friends. Unfortunately, this is only available for racing tracks. The mini-games must be played with one device in a pass-along style for multiplayer.

If you are a big online gamer and own a Xbox, 360 Live [$1.99 - iTunes Link] is the app for you. There are many apps within the App Store that perform many of the same functions as 360 Live but none of them are this well integrated.

• Sign in securely using your Xbox Live credentials. 360 Live automatically retrieves your friends.
• Complete Gamertags management. Add, remove, accept or reject pending requests.
• An organized Friends List. Grouped by status (Online, Offline, etc.)
• Gamer Profile and details including gamerscore, bio, location, country, gamercard, avatar, etc.
• Check your friends complete games history.
• Compare locked and unlocked achievements per game and gamertag.
• Send and receive messages. You can even send messages to multiple recipients!
• Gamercard coverflow style carrousel on landscape mode!

The only negative that I’ve seen testing this app out is that at times, it can take some time to load. Hopefully that is cleared up with an update or two and if it is, this will be hands down the best Xbox Live companion piece.

MikaMobile, the developers who brought us the popular side scrolling shooter Zombieville USA, [$1.99 - iTunes Link] recently submitted their follow up release, OMG Pirates! to Apple for App Store approval.

Looks like we can expect a great side scrolling experience along with a campaign mode, an unlockable “hard mode”, and survival modes. Personally I am a huge fan of Zombieville USA so can not wait for this to land in the App Store. Look for it to hit the App Store within the next month at the $1.99 – $2.99 price range.

Today the London based company, Shazam, announced the launch of its new Shazam Encore [$4.99 - iTunes Link] app on the App Store. The original Shazam is a free app that currently has over 10 million downloads so why not try to cash in with a new app that costs $4.99. Here is what you get for your money.

• Music recommendations: users can discover other music similar to the track that’s been tagged to enhance their music collection and knowledge.

Id Software has released the Godfather of all first person shooters, Doom Classic. [$6.99 - iTunes Link] The game has been ported nicely while including a completely new episode not found in the original along with a few other extras sprinkled in for your gaming pleasure.

Sean Cooper Games and MEDL Mobile have created a highly addicting gem of a game, Boxhead: The Zombie Wars. [$0.99 for the next two days - iTunes Link] Playing this game makes me feel like I’ve died and gone to zombie heaven.

Boxhead: The Zombie Wars is a extremely fast paced action-shooter where you get to play as Jon Bambo, a mercenary with a kick butt arsenal of weaponry which includes – pistol, shotgun, C4 explosives, minigun, turret machine guns, etc…

The premise is simple, kill as many zombies as you possibly can without dying. The more zombies you kill in a row, the higher your points multiplier will go. The higher you get your multiplier, bigger and more destructive your weapons will be at your disposal. Zombie destruction on your iPhone has never been so enjoyable.

Yesterday Popcap announced that it will be porting its fastest-selling Mac/PC game in the company’s history, Plants vs Zombies, over to iPhone before the year is over.

Not familiar with this game? You should be, it’s highly addicting gameplay not only caters to hardcore tower defense fans but to casual gamers alike.

UniWar is quite the little gem of a strategy game. You have four modes of play: Online, Campaign, Solo and Vs. and three species to choose from: Sapiens, Titans and Khraleans. The variety of  units is very diverse. You have units that can bury them selves underground and move a space at a time to units that can teleport across the screen. One of the great things I enjoy about this game is the plethora of maps you have to play; 50+!!! That is plenty to keep me busy. As of this writing, I have only played about 10 maps, so I have a long way to go!

This game is very polished and I have lost many hours playing it. If you like StarCraft, this is an excellent diversion to keep you busy. The developers are quite active in delivering updates (they are up to 1.0.4 already). They have also added the little extra touches that can make a difference such as the ability to play in portrait or landscape in real-time; just rotate your iPhone. Nice.

When you play online you register on the UniWar website and it keeps track of your stats and even has a ladder to see your ranking. You also have the ability to save multiple active games and resume them at your leisure.

If I were to mention some areas of improvement it would be the AI’s time to play; it can be lengthy at times (I once waited 20 seconds). Though trivial, I think with the modern hardware of the iPhone, that the AI can be sped up a bit for mobile gaming. Also, though the graphics are good, the animation appeared to be a bit jerky. Perhaps this could be improved with more animations per unit. If i had to guess, there are only a few frames of animation each. The fluidity of movements would make the play that much more immersive.

Overall, if you like Sci-Fi turn-based stragatey games, this is a steal at $4.99! Check it out now! Sreenshots after the break!

SplashID [$4.99 - iTunes link] is an app for the iPhone and iPod touch that provides a great  place to store your data securely with a password. Just how secure is it? Super secure. 256bit Blowfish secure.

I have used SplashID for years on the Palm OS. I was so excited to see that SplashData brought SplashID to the iPhone last year as I was easily able to port my old files over to the iPhone using their desktop companion app.

So what does SplashID do for you? A lot, let’s take a look after the break!

First, you can choose what type of password you would like to use; a simple 4 digit pin or  a longer password; it’s your choice. Of course, there is nothing more irritating as you go back and forth between SplashID and another app for you to keep entering your password into SplashID. There is a feature that allows you to suspend the locking feature for a period from 1 minute to 30 minutes.

You can organize your data in SplashID into several categories from software serial numbers to airline frequent flyer miles to your families social security numbers for quick reference. When you are dealing with sensitive data, you can also choose to mask certain fields to hide the data from the roaming eyes of casual observers.

Not only do you have the ability to customize your categories, but you can choose a theme and view for your data as well. You can pick row colors and choose between a list or panel view. I am personally partial to the panel view as it groups your items by category type instead of a list. Depending on the volume of entries you have, the list get get a little unyieldy. In an effort to help manage those that store a lot of information in SplashID, there is a very convenient “Most Viewed” button to access the info you view most frequently. If you have a hard time viewing the information in portrait mode, you can rotate to landscape too!

If you need to share any information, you can quick do so my using the email feature. With the tap of a button on screen, you can send information via email. One way I use this feature is to email my SSID information and password to friends that are visiting my house so they can get on the network (no I don’t have the new Airport Extreme with guest access ). You can also send the information as a secure file to another SplashID account!

I could really go on and on about SplashID since I have been using it for years. The added value of the companion desktop app ($19.99) is of additional benefit as your data is always safe, backed-up and accessible from your Mac/PC and your iPhone.

If you need something more than a simple password manager and need a tool to manage all of your sensitive information, look no further than SplashID for iPhone!

CNNMoney.com News, Stocks, and Video [free - iTunes link] for iPhone (and iPod touch) is the latest big name entrant into the App Store financial news and media space. Leveraging their brand and resources, it looks like CNNMoney.com’s mobile site while working like an iPhone app. iPhone-likeness aficionados may take a few blinking moments to adjust, but it’s a deliberate design decision that will no doubt appeal to the massive user-base of CNN.com’s existing web services.

TiPb had a chance to test drive CNNMoney, and from a pure content standpoint it’s impressive. When you first launch, you’re greeted with the News dashboard. At the very top is a rotating stock-ticker, then a sampling of latest news, stocks, videos, etc. Users can easily check or uncheck specific content options, and drag them around to re-sequence them in whatever order they prefer. (I immediately put technology news at the top).

The content itself isn’t merely a feed. In an effort to give mobile users the best experience possible, both statistical measures like popularity and hand-picked curation on the part of CNN Money’s editors determine which stories and in what order they’re made available to the iPhone app. Also, stories loaded into the app are cached locally in case you need to go offline (i.e. on an airplane).

The free app is supported by advertising, but when there is no appropriate or available ad, rather than filler or “house ads”, CNN Money cuts users a much-appreciated break and removes the ad space completely.

My Stocks is pre-populated with a few high profile favorites but can be easily customized. Tapping a stock brings up a details and graph view. As is typical with online stock reporting, quotes are delayed roughly 15 min. Once you’ve viewed a stock quote, a new section pops up on your dashboard News tab called Last 3 Quotes, and as the title indicates, it keeps track of your most recently views stocks.

Videos shows thumbnails and a brief description of the story. CNN Money typically produces over a dozen unique video segments a day, and they load quickly and look good on the iPhone.

The Add/Remove tab lets you do the content re-arrangement mentioned previously.

It should be noted that while CNN Money is compatible with iPhone 3.0, and the system-wide Copy functionality works fine, it doesn’t yet support push notification alerts, or automatic HTTP video stream optimization. Hopefully we’ll see these in an update. Along with a good James Earl Jones rendition of “This is CNN”.

Cali Lewis and GeekBrief.tv interview Greg Grunberg of Heroes, Lost, Alias, and Felicity fame who’s conceptualized Yowza!! A location-aware, iPhone specific coupon app. Participating businesses can use a simple back-end web system to set up discount offers which are then displayed on the iPhone app based on current location and/or deliberate search. iPod touch users get a local storage option, and Grunberg announces a special holiday surprise towards the end of the video as well.

It’s a trifle long, but interesting to hear both how the app came to life, and how the iPhone can be used to save money and, of course, revolutionize the world…

Anyone tried it yet?

Over the past two weeks, the App Store has seen its fair share of good quality games creating some waves among gamers, Aqua Moto Racing (iTunes link) being one of these games.

Aqua Moto Racing offers racing with an unprecedented sense of speed on the platform. With state of the art handling and graphics this game truly puts your Jet Ski riding skills to the ultimate test. Race in the beautifully rendered American locations; Emerald Bay, Everglades and Long Beach Port. Start off with participating in a Championship for beginners. Perform stunts and keep a tight line around the buoys to power your boost. Collect medals in the Time Trial mode by beating set target times. Register a profile and compare your race results with friends all over the world. Race against Aqua Moto Racing Lite World Records through Ghost Play.

I know most of you are probably thinking we have more than enough less than stellar racing games available in the App Store. Hopefully Aqua Moto Racing is a good sign of things to come. Where most of the other racing games have failed, this gem of a game succeeds. With good graphics, great control, virtually no slow down, no crashing, etc… This game is a keeper for $2.99.

While Big Media wants you to stay off their lawn (i.e. not stream their content to your TV’s), it looks like they’re increasingly okay-ish with their streaming it to your PC and… iPhone. Macworld brings word of the latest content streamer to hit the App Store, TV.com (iTunes link):

Most of the content consists of clips, interviews, and promos, but you’ll also find full episodes of some TV shows, such as “CSI: Miami” and the aforementioned [MacGyver] mixed in (well, to be honest, there weren’t many other shows I could find full episodes of at first glance). Full episodes are presented as multiple clips instead of as a single video. You can search for shows using the Search box at the top, or tap on the Shows and Channels buttons to browse in other ways.

Of course, a few more things need to happen to flesh out this category. Getting other networks on board via apps for Hulu and other services is one. Also, realizing it’s the 21st fraken century and NOT restricting streaming apps from international users would be grand. (TV.com is US App Store only).

Do you ever do any price comparison in the grocery store? Gallons vs. liters? Ounces vs. milligrams? Fifty feet of Scotch tape vs. 15 meters? What’s the best deal? Apples2Oranges is a $2.99 app from Ilium Software and can be downloaded to your iPhone from the App Store. It employs a simple touch interface where you can compare two kinds of modes: Ingredients Mode and Price Mode. Ingredients Mode lets you compare nutritional content for food you are eating or buying. Price Mode lets you compare two products side-by-side for the best price considering different measurements for volume, length, or area.

Just enter the numerical amount of the item on the left side of the “size” window, then select the type of measurement you are comparing in the right side of the “size” window, then press “compare” for the “price.” Or, if in Ingredient Mode, you can compare different measurements and even calories. This can be a very handy app if you are trying to save money at the store or trying to watch your calorie intake. Take a look in the App Store and get it if you like what you see.  

When Trillion-dollar stimulus packages are being passed and spent and the dollar seems to buy less and less, it’s nice to find some real values in the App Store, like Touchmaster Volume 1 from Midway. At only $3.99, you get 5 games for your entertainment – that’s only about $.80 cents per game (before tax, of course).

Included with this bundle are the following: 1) Spellwinder – a word search game using adjacent letters in any direction to score points; 2) Dice King – a dice puzzle game where points are scored for swapping adjacent dice to form matching combinations of three or more dice; 3) Prismatix – a hexagonal matching game requiring linking gems in color combinations displayed by a wheel at the top of your screen; 4) Combo 11 – form combinations of cards equaling 11 in value, eliminating cards as you go; 5) Carpet – similar to Solitaire, the object of the game is to discard all cards in their respective suits in sequences of Ace to King, using your deck and “carpet” of cards.

In addition to trying to get the highest score you can, you can also complete challenges and earn trophies along the way. The graphics are decent and the gameplay is easy with the touch interface. For $3.99, this 5-game package will provide hours of entertainment.

And Lo! When Apple opened the 1st seal, “Pull My Finger” was approved. When Apple opened the 2nd seal, “iFart Mobile” earned $10,000 a day. And when Apple opened the 3rd seal, there was silence in the App Store… except for a deafening cacophony of flatulence as Fartbox took to the field of battle.

Mactropolis has all the… graphic details, including sounds and languages (languages!).

Yeah. Um. Darwin kernel, BSD networking, OpenGL graphics, and the first new UI revolution in a decade, and farting is dominating the sales discussion and — doubtless — the funding pitch space.

Could the Hell Mouth hurry up and swallow us now-ish?

Alan Oppenheimer of Open Door Networks was kind enough to send us the video above from their Christmas Card page. He also provided us with a great background story:

We’ve been doing software for Apple products for over a quarter of a century. 25 years ago today I think I personally was finishing up some code for the network (“AppleTalk”) for the new “Macintosh” computer that Apple was going to introduce in less than a month (“You’ll see why 1984 won’t be like ’1984′”). I worked at Apple for 11 years, then started Open Door Networks 14 years ago. At Open Door we’ve done mainly Macintosh security software (blog at http://www.isfym.com), but also did a consumer product called Envision. When we (Open Door Networks + Project A = We-Envision.com) went to see what type of security software we could create for the iPhone, we determined there really wasn’t any (really — see blog entries), so we looked around for what else we could do, and Envision seemed like a natural fit. And it sure was, having now evolved into 25 different products! Our first and flagship product, iEnvision, shipped on day one (July 11) and we haven’t looked back since (we haven’t had time!).

We like interesting developers and interesting stories here at TiPb, and Mike Kasprzak of Smiles sent us in this gem:

I don’t know how closely you’ve been following the whole price changing fiasco in the iTunes App Store. Games launching at like $8-$10, then dropping to $1 a day or so later. Or apps jumping between 2 prices every few days to get front page exposure on aggregation sites. That sort of thing. It’s really making things hard for us developers trying to run an honest shop. Well, I did something a little different with my game Smiles. I launched the game at $4.99, but instead of dropping the price like ‘conventional wisdom’ seems to suggest, I cut it in half. This works for me, since Smiles is actually 2 games (a clever business idea that… well… hasn’t work out in my favor yet). Customers can buy my game “Smiles” individual parts (Smiles Zen, and Smiles Drop) for $2.99 each, or save about $1 by purchasing “Smiles” for $4.99.
