Popular iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad jailbreak tool, redsn0w has been updated to version 0.9.10b4 and now includes a fix for the iBooks issue that has long been plaguing jailbreak.

The b4 version of redsn0w incorporates the 5.0.1 fix for iBooks, and also for sporadic problems with launchctl. Thanks to @xvolks for merging the iBooks (sandbox) fix from @comex’s github into the overall corona untether from @pod2g! As usual, you can choose to install the fix either by re-running redsn0w over your existing jailbreak (de-select Cydia if you do that), or by installing the corona package from Cydia (it’s the same set of files no matter which way you choose).

Heard about the untethered jailbreak for the original iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and older models running iOS 5.0.1 and curious how to use it on your own device?. This jailbreak won’t yet work with newer, Apple A5 chipset-powered devices, namely the iPhone 4S or iPad 2, but if you own anything earlier, you’re in luck.

Supported devices

iPhone 4 (GSM & CDMA)

iPod touch 4th generation

iPad (orignal model)

iPhone 3GS

What you need

A supported device – please note this will not work for iPhone 4S or iPad 2

A Mac or PC

redsn0w 0.9.10b1 – Mac, Windows

Untether via the Corona Cydia package

If you’re already tethered jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1, you can untether your jailbreak using the Corona package in Cydia.

Untether via redsn0w

If for some reason you’d prefer using redsn0w to untether, you may do so. Just run the version of redsn0w linked above over your existing jailbreak. When prompted what you want to do, just uncheck Install Cydia since you already have it installed. Let redsn0w do its thing and you should be untethered when it completes.

Jailbreak your device

If you’re not jailbroken at all, perform the following steps –

First Launch redsn0w

This version and other newer versions of redsn0w should automatically detect what version of iOS you are running. No need to manually browse to a firmware file this time. Just click Jailbreak and follow the prompts.

Next redsn0w will prompt you to only continue when your device is powered off. If it isn’t already, power your device off while it’s connected to the computer.

Next you will be guided through putting your device into DFU mode. Follow the steps and redsn0w will take care of the rest.

After redsn0w finishes doing it’s thing, you’re done!

Common issues and how to solve them

Stuck on Apple logo or in recovery mode

Some users seem to be experiencing this issue. Performing a clean restore in iTunes and then attempting to jailbreak after a clean install should alleviate this issue.

redsn0w fails

First attempt to select a custom IPSW under Extras in redsn0w and navigate to the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW to see if this fixes the issue. If it still fails, try a clean restore in iTunes and then attempt to jailbreak again.

If you’re running into other issues, make sure to check out our jailbreak and unlock forums for further help troubleshooting common and not so common jailbreak issues.

Thanks to pod2g and all his hard work, an untethered jailbreak is now available for the original iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and older models. Both redsn0w and Corona have been updated to support the new, untethered jailbreak.

A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam. We’ve put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).

Unfortunately, Apple A5 chipset-powered devices, namely iPhone 4S and iPad 2, are still in jailbreak limbo.

Because those devices cannot use geohot’s limera1n exploit to inject the untether, they require exploits above and beyond those used for this release. Keep following pod2g on twitter or his blog for any progress reports!

redsn0w has been updated to version 0.9.9b9d in order to fix a few bugs. This update comes right after an update to ultrasn0w and after adding support to redsn0w for iOS 5.0.1.

iPhone3GS owners in our comments section below noticed a problem with the untethered jailbreak available for the old-bootrom 3GS. We’ve corrected that problem in 0.9.9b9d. If you have an old-bootrom 3GS and have already used last night’s redsn0w on it, you can re-run it again without losing anything. Just use this new version, go to Extras->IPSW and manually select the 5.0.1 IPSW, then go back and Jailbreak it again (but you can uncheck Cydia because it’s already installed).

Keep in mind this jailbreak is still tethered unless you have an iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom. You can grab the updated version via the links below then check out our guide on how to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 via redsn0w.
pod2g has shown off an iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak running on an iPhone 4.

Here is a new video demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4. This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods. The jailbreak is near ready for prime time (excluding 4S and iPad 2).

Hopefully iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners won’t have too long to wait, however, as he previously said he’d overcome the cache issues on A5 devices –

Either way, looks like they’re finally nearing the end zone in the land of untethered. Don’t forget to support jailbreak devs and donate when you can if you find their tools useful.

If you need to tethered jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 via redsn0w you can now do so without having to manually point to iOS 5.0. The Dev-Team has updated their redsn0w tool to offer native support for iOS 5.0.1. Other notable changes include full support for the newer 8GB iPhone 4, iBooks issue fixed, custom IPSWs for 3GS owners without blobs, and more.

The full list of changes for redsn0w 0.9.9b9b are as follows –

native support for 5.0.1 (no need to point redsn0w at 5.0 IPSW or use command-line args). Support automatically extends to all of redsn0w’s various functions: “Jailbreak”, “Just boot”, “Fetch blobs”, “Stitch blobs”, “Recovery Fix”

iBooks fixed in 5.0 and 5.0.1. This is a targeted fix that doesn’t remove entire sandbox mechanism. 5.x users already using redsn0w “Just Boot” can just use the new version without redoing entire jailbreak again

3GS old-bootrom owners can now create custom IPSWs without blobs

ultrasn0w compatability update (i.e. same baseband requirements) for 5.0.1 will be available on Cydia Monday

support for newer 8GB iPhone4 (which until now had problems with “Fetch blobs”). Thanks to @JKjeepnJeff for loaning us one of these newer i4 units for testing!

allows Windows users (not just OS X users) to use the “Custom” button to create IPSWs without baseband updates. (Update: please wait for 0.9.9b9b for this!)

accommodates APTickets in 5.x (until next Apple countermove). APTickets are crypto-verified before submitting to Cydia, just like the main blobs. Cydia server support for sending back the APTickets is upcoming. For now, use stitched IPSWs for 5.x. Due to APTickets, stitched 5.x IPSWs now require user to start in “Pwned DFU” mode

Support added for stitching 4.x blobs to iPad2-GSM IPSWs. Similar to @notcom’s TinyCFW but doesn’t require lots of RAM or a TSS-assisted restore. Won’t work for iPad2 5.x blobs (or iPhone4S at all) until a bootrom-level exploit is out

top line now shows whether (and where) a redsn0w update is available, or if the version being run is the latest. Uses DNS TXT record to alleviate any concerns about snooping

no 5.1 beta support at this time (major apps like Cydia are not yet compatible)

@pod2g has been doing a great job porting his 5.x untether…check his blog for updates!

Owners of newer 3GS iPhones must not flash the iPad baseband. The iPad baseband will not work on 3GS iPhones built later than 2011 week 35. You have a week 35 or later device if your serial # starts with xx135.

While this is good news and makes the process a lot smoother, I know many of you are still holding out for untethered. Hopefully that’ll be next.

If you’ve updated your iPhone 3GS to iOS 5 or 5.0.1 and lost your unlock we can help you get it back. The actual jailbreak will be tethered but you’ll still be able to unlock and continue using your device in the mean time until an untethered jailbreak solution is released. iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S users should steer clear of this as it will not work.

Devices supported

iPhone 3GS

What you’ll need

RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 or later, we recommend the most current version which is RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 – Mac Link, Windows Link

A working SIM card (doesn’t matter what carrier as long as it’s activated and working)

Jailbreak with RedSn0w and Install the iPad baseband

You’ll follow the same steps are you would to jailbreak via Redsn0w except for one difference. Instead of just checking Install Cydia you’ll need to check off Install iPad baseband. RedSn0w will warn you that this can not be undone. Agree and continue the jailbreak process.

Boot Tethered

After jailbreaking you’ll need to perform one tethered boot before unlocking. Simply launch RedSn0w again and click Extras. Check the box for Just boot tethered right now. You’ll be walked through DFU mode and your phone should reboot.

Install UltraSn0w

After your phone reboots you’ll need to perform the following steps to unlock it:

Open Cydia and search for ultrasn0w

Install the ultrasn0w package to your device.

After installation is complete your phone should automatically ask you to reboot it. If it doesn’t, reboot it manually.

You’ll need to jump into RedSn0w one more time and perform a tethered boot like you did above.

Your phone should now be unlocked. It may say Searching… for a few minutes before finally connecting to the network.

Known Issues

A few users have seen issues where their phone will not obtain service after using ultrasn0w on iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1. If you have this issue, launch RedSn0w once more and choose jailbreak again. Instead of going through the whole process this time, you only want to check Deactivate. Do one more tethered boot and you should be good to go!

If you need more help, visit our TiPb jailbreak & unlock forums for answers to many common questions and to ask your own!

Update: Some users are pointing out that using RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 is breaking GPS functionality again but using RedSn0w 0.9.9b7 doesn’t. So if you’re having that issue, try using the beta 7 version instead. Thanks to all that tipped this!

If you’re currently running iOS 5.0.1, you can jailbreak via RedSn0w 0.9.9b8. This one is also tethered like the previous beta versions of RedSn0w for iOS 5. It’s also worth noting that unlockers should stay away from this one unless they’re okay with being tethered. iPhone 4 users should stay away from any newer stock iOS firmware versions altogether in order to preserve their baseband.

Be advised that not all jailbreak apps and tweaks have been updated to support iOS 5 yet. If you’re alright with running tethered and don’t mind a few bugs here and there, follow along for a quick walkthrough.

If you’ve used RedSn0w before, you’ll be right at home. It’s not too much different than jailbreaking any other firmware version you may have used it for previously.

Devices Supported

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad 1

iPhone3GS

iPhone 4 (GSM)

iPhone 4 (CDMA)

And I can’t say this enough times, if your device is not listed above, please do not attempt to jailbreak any device but the ones listed above. iPad 2 and iPhone 4S users will have to sit this one out.

What you need

iOS 5.0.1 installed on your device

RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 – Mac Link, Windows Link

First Launch RedSn0w

This version and other newer versions of RedSn0w should automatically detect what version of iOS you are running. No need to manually browse to a firmware file this time. Just click Jailbreak and follow the prompts.

Next RedSn0w will prompt you to only continue when your device is powered off. If it isn’t already, power your device off while it’s connected to the computer.

Next you will be guided through putting your device into DFU mode. Follow the steps and RedSn0w will take care of the rest.

If you’re on 5.0.1, you will need to manually navigate to an iOS 5.0 firmware file (not 5.0.1). RedSn0w will fail to identify the build on iOS 5.0.1. So do this when RedSn0w fails just like you had to with all other previous versions that didn’t automatically detect an IPSW. Just navigate to an iOS 5.0 file for your device instead of 5.0.1.
Update: You can use redsn0w 0.9.9b9b for native iOS 5.0.1 support now and not have to point to a 5.0 IPSW. Download links for the newer version of redsn0w are here: Mac, Windows

After RedSn0w finishes doing it’s thing, you’re done!

Next you may need to perform a tethered boot. If you do, simply open RedSn0w again and click Extras and then Just Boot

Your phone will perform a tethered boot and you should be good to go!

RedSn0w has also thrown in a little bonus for Windows users. You can copy the redsnow.exe file to your desktop or anywhere you like and rename it something like justboot.exe. As long as you have the word “boot” in the file name you can just double click that file to perform a quick tethered boot with RedSn0w.

That’s it boys and girls. If you need any help, be sure to check out our TiPb jailbreak forums. Until next time, happy jailbreaking!

It’s been a big day for the jailbreak community with a possible iPhone 4S unlock and the new crash reporting tool released by the Chronic Dev Team. Now the PwnDev Team has released a new jailbreak utility for iOS 5 and 5.0.1.

I’m pleased to announce that we’ve just released Beta 1 of Ac1dSn0w for Mac OS X Lion (should also work on Snow Leopard). Ac1dSn0w allows you to jailbreak your iDevice tethered. It also provides features like Tethered Boot, Pwned DFU, and Exit Recovery to get your device out of Recovery Loop.

Ac1dSn0w will perform very much like Redsn0w already does. It will tethered jailbreak the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch 4G.

Ac1dSn0w also includes features such as “Exit Recovery” and “Pwned DFU”.

It’s great to see new tools being released and more developers stepping up and becoming more actively involved in the jailbreak community. I’ll be interested to see how these new tools fair against some of the veteran ones.

UPDATE: Turns out Ac1dSn0w uses copyrighted Apple code, which is a dealbreaker. Better to avoid any hassles or potential hassles and stick with redsn0w.

In case you missed the news, Apple released a beta of iOS 5.01 to developers yesterday to address various bug fixes; notably battery life. The good news is that you can still jailbreak it using Redsn0w. If you have decided that you can’t suffer the iOS 5 bugs any longer but don’t want to forfeit your jailbreak either, you are safe to proceed.

Devs trying today’s 5.0.1 beta can JB with existing redsn0w (but select the 5.0 IPSW thru GUI or command line)

The jailbreak remains a tethered solution for now and does not work with the iPhone 4S or the iPad 2.

Update: Redsn0w has now been updated to version 0.9.9b8 and it now supports iOS beta 5.0.1. There is no need to use the iOS 5.0 IPSW anymore!

iOS Dev-Team member MuscleNerd says that UltraSn0w will be updated as soon as tomorrow with support for iOS 5, allowing iPhone users to unlock their device to use on unsupported carriers.

will coordinate ultrasn0w iOS5 compatibility update to come out after a planned MobileSubstrate update tomorrow

Keep in mind that the UltraSn0w unlock will only work for 01.59.00, 05.11.07, 04.26.08, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and 06.15.00 basebands, so if your baseband differs from these you won’t be able to unlock your iPhone using UltraSn0w until the Dev-Team finds a new exploit.

It’s currently possible to upgrade your iPhone to iOS 5 while preserving your baseband using the current version of RedSn0w, which you’ll also need to jailbreak your iPhone before starting.

Will you be unlocking your iPhone with UltraSn0w?

It hasn’t even been a full day since Apple seeded iOS 5 GM to developers, but the iPhone Dev-Team has already updated Redsn0w to fully support the gold-master release.

redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b3 to auto-detect iOS5 GM firmware. Remember: it’s still tethered for all devices except for iPhone 3GS with old bootrom. If you don’t use redsn0w to “Just boot” at power up, all jailbreak apps (and even some native ones like MobileSafari) will fail to launch.

If you already jailbroke the GM by pointing an older redsn0w at the beta7 IPSW, there’s no need to re-run the full jailbreak step again…just use this newer one to make the tethered boot easier

The following devices are supported under Redsn0w 0.9.9b3a.

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad 1

iPhone3GS

iPhone4 (GSM)

iPhone4 (CDMA)

It’s important to note that this does not support unlocking your iPhone, and those requiring an unlock should stay away from iOS 5 completely until an unlock is available. Additionally, this is still a tethered jailbreak (unless you’re on an older bootrom) which means you’ll have to plug it into your computer each time a reboot is needed.

We’ll have a full how-to up shortly to help you through the steps of jailbreaking under iOS 5 GM.

Currently running iOS 5 beta 7 and wondering how to Jailbreak? Well you’re in luck, you can now do so with the newest version of Redsn0w. Of course this one is also tethered like the previous beta versions of RedSn0w for iOS 5.

Be advised that not all jailbreak apps and tweaks have been updated to support iOS 5. If you’re alright with running tethered and don’t mind a few bugs here and there, follow along for a quick walkthrough.

By this point, almost anyone jailbreaking is already familiar with RedSn0w and how it works. It’s no different this time.

Devices Supported

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad 1

iPhone3GS

iPhone4 (GSM)

iPhone4 (CDMA)

And I can’t say this enough times, if your device is not listed above, please do not attempt to jailbreak it on iOS 5!

What you need

iOS 5 beta 6 and 7 IPSWs from Apple’s Developer Portal

RedSn0w 0.9.8b7 – Mac Link, Windows Link

After you have iOS 5 beta 7 installed on your device, your device backed up, and your version of iTunes upgraded to the newest beta version, follow the steps below to jailbreak.

First launch RedSn0w.

It should ask you to navigate to a firmware file. Simply navigate to the iOS 5 beta 6 firmware file instead of beta 7.

Once you click next, RedSn0w will take a minute to do it’s thing. You should see a patching kernel message and that Redsn0w successfully recognized your firmware.

Next select the options you’d like RedSn0w to perform. I typically only select Install Cydia. It’s worth noting that this is where you will perform a tethered boot if needed as well. You will just select Just boot tethered for now if you need to do this or your device reboots or dies.

Redsn0w will now walk you through putting your device into DFU mode

After you’re successfully in DFU mode, simply let Redsn0w do its thing and you’re done!

The existing version of Redsn0w for Mac and Sn0wbreeze for Windows will work just fine. I’ve confirmed this working on a 4th generation iPod Touch. iDB has confirmed it working as well.

The process should be the same as previous versions of Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze. Just use the new beta 6 firmware file in place of beta 5 or earlier.

As always, remember that not only is iOS 5 in beta, these jailbreak tools are also beta. Unless you’re a developer or jailbreak developer, I’d probably hold off on doing this. Not all regular apps are compatible with iOS 5 let alone jailbreak apps. So be advised to proceed at your own risk.

If you’re currently running iOS 5 beta 5 but just can’t live without your jailbreak, the Dev Team has already released RedSn0w beta 5. The only catch is, it’s tethered, just like the previous beta versions of RedSn0w for iOS 5.

What you need

iOS 5 beta 5 IPSW from Apple’s Developer Portal

RedSn0w 0.9.8b5 – Mac Link, Windows Link

After you have iOS 5 beta 5 installed on your device and your version of iTunes upgraded to 10.5 beta 5, follow the steps below to jailbreak.

First launch RedSn0w.

It should ask you to navigate to a firmware file. Simply navigate to the iOS 5 beta 5 firmware file instead of beta 2.

That’s it! The process is pretty much the same as the first time around. But if you do run into problems or have questions, make sure you check out our TiPb Jailbreak Forums. We’ve got tons of great members more than ready and willing to help!

Since Apple recently released iOS 5 beta 3, you may be wondering whether or not you can jailbreak as you could with beta 1 and beta 2. Fortunately, beta 3 is also jailbreakable.

But again, we’ll warn you that beta software has its own qualms to begin with so if you’re not comfortable with a few more bugs, we urge you to stay away. Also keep in mind a lot of jailbreak tweaks and apps have not yet been updated to support iOS 5. If you absolutely need to get your beta jailbreak on, follow along for another walk-through.

Devices supported

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad 1

iPhone3GS

iPhone4 (GSM)

iPhone4 (CDMA)

If your device is not listed above, please do not attempt to jailbreak your device. So yes, iPad 2 owners will have to wait or jailbreak iPad via JailbreakMe on iOS 4.3.3.

First you will need to download Redsn0w 0.9.8b2 – Mac Link, Windows Link

Next you will need to make sure you have the iOS beta 1 firmware file from the Apple Developer Portal or wherever else you choose to find it.

Select it and click next.

No sooner did iOS 5 beta 3 come out then the iPhone Dev Team followed with redsn0w 0.9.8b2. The previous version of redsn0w worked on the new release, but not perfectly according to MuscleNerd:

redsn0w 0.9.8b2 http://is.gd/6eek4Y should fix 50b3 App Store issue (if you’re already JB, just use this to boot tethered)

Jailbreakme.com also received an update from Comex that’s being pushed out via Cydia. Saurik explains:

So, @comex made some fixes to the kernel patches for JailbreakMe, and we are pushing them as an “Essential Upgrade”… I hope this works!

To be clear: do /not/ go back to jailbreakme.com and “redo” the jailbreak; instead, just open Cydia, and accept the new “Essential Upgrade”.

Just get iOS 5 beta 2 and already wondering how to Jailbreak it? We recently showed you how to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 1 with Redsn0w. Fortunately, the process for beta 2 isn’t much different. You’ll simply need to use the beta 1 IPSW in order to jailbreak.

As always, betas are already buggy to begin with, and iOS 5 is no exception. The Dev-Team and many jailbreak devs are really only encouraging developers to jailbreak iOS 5 beta as of now. So if you are a developer (or a ninja who is afraid of nothing), follow along for a short walk-through.

Devices Supported

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad 1

iPhone3GS

iPhone4 (GSM)

iPhone4 (CDMA)

And I can’t say this enough times, if your device is not listed above, please do not attempt to jailbreak it on iOS 5!

What you need

iOS 5 beta 1 IPSW from Apple’s Developer Portal

Redsn0w 0.9.8b1 – Mac Link, Windows Link

After you have iOS 5 beta 2 installed on your device and your version of iTunes upgraded to 10.5 beta 2, follow the steps below to jailbreak.

First launch Redsn0w.

It should ask you to navigate to a firmware file. Simply navigate to the iOS 5 beta 1 firmware file instead of beta 2.

That’s it! The process is pretty much the same as the first time around. But if you do run into problems or have questions, make sure you check out our TiPb Jailbreak Forums. We’ve got tons of great members more than ready and willing to help!

Miss your tweaks and wondering how to Jailbreak iOS 5? As long as your okay with a tethered jailbreak for now, you can get your jailbreak on again thanks

Miss your tweaks and wondering how to Jailbreak iOS 5? As long as your okay with a tethered jailbreak for now, you can get your jailbreak on again thanks to Redsn0w 0.9.8b1.

It’s worth noting first that the Dev-team is calling this jailbreak a beta. Which means there could (and probably will be) quite a few bugs. Also keep in mind that a majority of jailbreak apps have not been updated to support iOS 5 as of yet. So just be forewarned. If you’re okay with being tethered and dealing with a few bugs, click through for a quick walkthrough!

Devices supported

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad 1

iPhone3GS

iPhone4 (GSM)

iPhone4 (CDMA)

If your device is not listed above, please do not attempt to jailbreak your device. Yes, iPad 2 owners, I’m looking at you!

First you will need to download Redsn0w – Mac Link, Windows Link

Next you will need to make sure you have the iOS beta 1 firmware file from the Apple Developer Portal or wherever else you choose to find it.

Launch Redsn0w. You should be asked to navigate to the firmware file from the previous step. Select it and click next.

Once you click next, Redsn0w will take a minute to do it’s thing.
Here is a tip for Jailbreakers on how to hide apps — like Apple’s built in and impossible to delete weather and stocks — easily with the Poof tweak that comes built into your SBSettings. SBSettings is a free tweak from the Cydia app store that will do just that. Hit the jump to find out how to get it on your device.

Setup

Launch Cydia from your jailbroken device.

In Cydia, search “SBSettings”

Download the tweak from Cydia.

How to use

Launch the tweak from your device by sliding your finger across the top status bar.

Select the More button.

Select the Hide Icons button.

Respring your device.

**Bonus Tip: If you’re not Jailbroken, you can’t delete built in app but you can hide them in folders and consign them to distant home screen.

David Ashman is a well known jailbreak app writer with his Lockinfo package from Cydia. Almost everyone who jailbreaks has, or has heard of, Lockinfo. He attended the WWDC keynote today, and to say the least, he feels ripped off.

Apple finally figured out that you need to do more than show a big blue popup on the lockscreen to provide users with useful information. What they added is a direct rip off of Peter Hajas’ MobileNotifier (at least he got hired by Apple). But what is it missing (at least based on early views… I’ll admit I don’t have the developer seed yet):

<del>No emails on the lockscreen.</del> (Redacted… screenshot shows it)
No quick previews.
No direct replies via integrations with other apps.
No status bar icons.
No plugin API.
No weather (on the lockscreen).
No RSS feeds.
No Twitter integration.
No Facebook integration (coming soon).
No favorites quick dial/text/facetime.

He goes on to say that Apple did make it look pretty, but it’s still lacking some of the major conveniences that he, himself, has implemented into his own jailbreak package, such as quick previews, direct replies, and drop down lists.

These are just a few of the things he has posted in his latest blog. He says he will continue to develop for Lockinfo and keep pushing out updates. To read his entire blog post, hit the link at the bottom of the post.

What do you think of Ashman’s comments? Do you think he is valid in stating this? Do you feel as though Apple ripped off his idea? Let us know in the comments.

Wondering how to turn your iPhone 4 LED flash into a flashlight? Click Home. Launch camera. Switch to video. Turn on the flash… and by then you’ve knocked your foot or your head or lost sight of whatever it is you were looking for. Luckily, you can get your flashlight on much faster with SpringFlash, an awesome tweak from Cydia. SpringFlash allows you to use the activator app, which is installed when you jailbreak your device, to get instant access to your iPhone 4′s LED light. Setup is easy, hit the jump to find out how.

Setup

Launch Cydia from your jailbroken iPhone 4

Search SpringFlash

Download the tweak

Note: there will be no app icon with this tweak, nor will there be an option in the settings app on your phone.

Activation

Once the app is installed:

Launch Settings

Go to Activator

Choose how you would like to have your iPhone 4′s LED activated.

That’s it. No re-spring required!

The Dev Team has released a small update to PwnageTool and redsn0w to fix an issue with the side vibration/ringer switch for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

If you’re already jailbroken at 4.3.3 (by either redsn0w rc15 or custom IPSW), you can install this fix simply by running redsn0w rc16 over your existing 4.3.3 jailbreak. Just uncheck the “Install Cydia” option and check any other options you want. The fix will be installed no matter what you’ve selected. This is safe for even ultrasn0w unlockers to do (because redsn0w itself won’t update your baseband…only an iTunes stock IPSW update/restore will do that).

Here’s our how to Jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 tutorial, with a video walkthrough, if you want the step-by-step.

The bug was smashed by @i0n1c. Other improvements include removing the need for Windows 7 and Vista users to set their CPU affinity — they can just run as Administrator in WinXP compatibility mode now.

The Dev-Team has announced the release of the iOS 4.3.3 untethered jailbreak. Those of you holding off updating until this was released can now go ahead. The untethered jailbreak is still based on the exploit created by @i0nic for iOS 4.3.1. That is now three firmware releases in a row without Apple fixing the exploit; that is a first!

Today’s PwnageTool and redsn0w incorporate @i0n1c’s port to 4.3.3 (it’s ironic that such a long-lasting untether doesn’t even have an official name!). It also of course uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit to inject the jailbreak. The 4.3.3 untether works on all devices that actually support 4.3.3 except for the iPad2: ultrasn0w unlockers must stay away from redsn0w! Use only a custom IPSW to update to 4.3.3, to avoid updating your baseband.

Trying to rearrange one of your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad home screens and curious how to move multiple apps around at once? Well, if you’re Jailbroken, you can! Multiiconmove allows you to move multiple icons so you can get your home screen exactly how you want it, as fast as possible. We’ll show you how after the break

Multiiconmover cuts your time down by letting you move multiple icons at one time. It’s available from Cydia for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

Launch Cydia on your jailbroken iPhone

Search for Multiiconmover

Install the app.

Once Multiiconmover is downloaded, there will be no app icon on your springboard, it automatically goes into action.

First, hold down an icon like you were going to move them.

Once the icons start jiggling, tap the icons you would like to move

Drag one of the icons you would like to move to the spot that you want.
Note, you must have enough room on the page for all the icons you have selected to move.

Once your icon is where you want it, tap the home button and you will see all the icons you’ve selected move to the location you wanted.

As you can see from the tweet above, the Dev Team has updated their popular PwnageTool to support an untethered jailbreak under iOS 4.3.2. You now have the option of using either PwnageTool or redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.3.2.

We have experienced some issues with jailbreaking iOS 4.3.2. Some users say they have had issues as well while others are perfectly fine. I’m personally staying on 4.2.1 for now since I have no compelling reason to upgrade.

The updated version of PwnageTool is available at the link below. It supports the following devices -

iPhone 3GS

iPhone 4 (GSM)

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad First generation

So iPad 2 users and Verizon iPhone users need not apply. And a final note to unlockers – you should only ever use a custom IPSW when upgrading firmware. While ultrasn0w will unlock your iPhone running iOS 4.3.2, that only applies if you are running an older baseband. So never restore to a stock firmware in iTunes because that will not preserve your baseband! Check out more details and grab your download from the link below!

redsn0w 0.9.6rc13 is here and it brings with it the promise of an untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2 devices including iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3 and 4, and iPad 1. iPhone 4 will be coming as soon as a fix is made, and iPad 2 is still waiting on a new exploit (yes, we’re sad too.) According to the Dev-Team:

Only a few weeks after the 4.3.1 untether created by @i0n1c was released, Apple pushed out firmware 4.3.2. Thankfully, it appears Apple didn’t have a chance to fix the hole used by @i0n1c’s untether, so he ported his code over to 4.3.2’s kernel. Today’s redsn0w has been updated to include it.

Check out our complete iOS 4.3.2 untethered Jailbreak guide (updated from our 4.3.1 since the process is essentially unchanged) and if you need any help jump on into our Jailbreak Forum.

Are you apart of #teamjailbreak? Are you updating to 4.3.2 and giving the new redsn0w a try? Let us know how it works for you!

UPDATED: iPhone 4 (AT&T/GSM) is good to go!

redsn0w rc14 includes the fixed i4 untether from @i0n1c. You can re-run redsn0w rc14 right over the tethered rc13b to transform the i4 JB into an untethered one.

i0n1c has just confirmed via his Twitter account that the exploit behind the current untethered jailbreak is still working and alive on iOS 4.3.2. Apple has not patched it. He is currently running the jailbreak on his original iPad. Odds are that this will work for all devices minus the iPad 2.

I would still hold off on upgrading until a jailbreak tool has been updated if you can. But if any of you try out redsn0w on iOS 4.3.2, let us know what happens and how it turns out in the comments! If you run into any issues, check out our TiPb jailbreak forums too.

Our newest jailbreak ninja, Cody, recently let you know how to untethered jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 via redsn0w but since then, how has it been? I personally haven’t had time to upgrade to iOS 4.3.1 and re-jailbreak. Cody however has voiced that he has had a lot more springboard crashes than he did under the previous iOS 4.2.1 greenpois0n jailbreak.

Most jailbreakers are aware that not all apps are compatible with a new jailbreak, so outside of those causing issues, are any of you experiencing issues? Cody and a couple readers have wrote in to let me know that they’ve experienced some safe mode crashes and reboots under iOS 4.3.1.

If you have issues, let us know in the the poll and/or in the comments as well as checking out our TiPb jailbreak forums to see what issues other members are experiencing and if they’ve found any ways around them.

The Dev-Team will be releasing the official tools for an untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak tonight. Both Redsn0w and PwnageTool will be available within the next 24 hours and will support all iOS devices including the iPhone 4 and latest generation iPod touch, but will not yet be compatible with the iPad 2.

Over the weekend the Dev-Team let the world know that if #sundayisfunday started trending on Twitter they’d release an untethered jailbreak shortly after. It has since been confirmed that they’re planning to release the official tools at GMT-8, which should translate for us in the US and Canada to the following times:

12AM Pacific

1AM Mountain

2AM Central

3AM Eastern

It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like we’ll finally be able to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 without needing to tether to a PC or Mac each time a reboot is required. We’re not sure when a jailbreak will be out for the iPad 2, but we’ve heard rumblings of something in the works from Comex. The Dev-Team may hold out on an iPad 2 jailbreak to make sure Apple doesn’t patch hardware vulnerabilities with the iPhone 5, but with rumors that we won’t see the iPhone 5 in June this year they may end up releasing a tool sooner rather than later.

Will you be jailbreaking after Redsn0w and PwnageTool are released tonight? Let us know in the comments!

The iOS 4.2.1 untethered Jailbreak via redsn0w beta we posted about the other day is now good to go for testers. Again, this is not an untethered Jailbreak release it’s just a beta that’s buggy but, with testers’ help and feedback, should get better and quick. Quoth the Dev Team:

This is a beta tester program. It’s not a general release! Things can go very wrong, so please don’t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven’t backed up!

For the same reason, please don’t participate if you rely on the ultrasn0w carrier unlock. Wait for the final version!

Until we fix some sandbox issues with bluetooth, the bluetooth functionality is disabled.

This very first beta1 is limited to iPhone4, iPad, and iPod touch 4G.

Cydia must have your 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved on file. (As we approach a general release, we’ll provide a way to let you use locally saved hashes too).

You must already have the usbmuxd software installed and running on your Mac (this requirement will eventually go away too). The correct invocation of the relay is just as that page says: “./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222”. If the relay isn’t installed or running correctly by the time the redsn0w ramdisk has started, you’ll need to restore to stock FW again to try it again. Please test it beforehand to save yourself some time!

Please leave all feedback in the comments below (we really need your feedback to help develop it into a stable release!)

If the above scares or confuses you, stay away. If it excites and entices you, go grab the redsn0w beta test release via the link below, and let us know how it works for you!

Update: Please use extreme caution when using betas of anything. This is no exception. It seems the beta of redsn0w is causing a lot of users some serious grief. Us here at TiPb recommend staying on iOS 4.1 if you can or sticking with the tethered version for now. Here’s a list of issues many users have been experiencing with the beta

We’re troubleshooting in the Jailbreak Forum, come join us!

Bluetooth is disabled

iPod player not working on iPhone 4 and iPad

Application switcher causing the springboard to crash

YouTube is not working for many

Videos in your camera roll may not play at all

AirPlay not compatible

Some app store apps are crashing or not working at all

The above issues are pretty serious and exactly why the Dev Team has advised that general users stay away from this beta. It’s for testers, not the general public. So unless you are using it for testing purposes, it’s best to stay away. If you expect a fully functional jailbreak with no issues, this isn’t it.

With Comex not able to finish his planned iOS 4.2.1 untethered Jailbreak in time for Christmas, MuscleNerd and the iPhone Dev-Team are pushing ahead with a redsn0w “backup plan” and are looking for a few good, qualified testers.

To keep things manageable, this will be a Mac-only test program. We also request that any volunteers NOT need the ultrasn0w unlock (in case things go very wrong).

Right now, the “backup plan” requires that you have the 4.2b3 IPSW on your Mac, and that Cydia has your 4.2b3 SHSH hashes. Please don’t pirate that 4.2b3 IPSW! (We’re also working on a way that this technique might apply to all those with 4.1 IPSWs, but that’s not the first goal right now.)

About an hour ago, Comex fired out the tweet you see above, saying he might miss his self-imposed deadline for an untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak for iPhone or iPod touch

About an hour ago, Comex fired out the tweet you see above, saying he might miss his self-imposed deadline for an untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak for iPhone or iPod touch by Christmas. For those of you not familiar with the current “state of the jailbreak”, a lot of users (specifically iPhone 4 and newer basebands) are either stuck on 4.2.1 with a tethered jailbreak or are waiting to upgrade from 4.1 until there’s an untethered option. For most newer models, firmwares, and basebands, redsn0w is the only option and you’ll be tethered (which you may or may not consider a hassle). Supposedly, a newer version will allow an easy untether process via redsn0w. Looks like we could be waiting a bit longer than expected, unless another 4.2.1 untethered solution comes along sooner.

It’s still unclear whether an untethered version is still going to require saved SHSH blobs. As Apple isn’t signing 4.1 anymore, we’ll hope for those users on stock 4.2.1 you won’t need them.

If you were waiting patiently for an untethered solution before Christmas, you may be out of luck. According to Comex, that deadline may not be achievable. Are any of you anxiously awaiting an untethered Christmas present? Are you currently on 4.2.1 stock/tethered or are you still running 4.1? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts!

With iOS 4.2.1 being released to the masses today, here’s a couple tips for jailbreakers. If you’re on iOS 4.1 and jailbroken, by this point you should know how to save your SHSH blobs via TinyUmbrella or Cydia.

As of right now, most jailbreak methods that work on iOS 4.2.1 are pretty hairy. I highly suggest waiting to upgrade for the official tools, but if you feel the need to give it a try right now, I’ve put up an iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak guide in our forums. Ask questions, give answers, and help eachother out. You can always visit our general jailbreak forum and post other questions and find answers about other topics as well.

Whatever you decide to do, let us know how it works for you!

Update: The Dev-Team has updated their blog giving everyone a bit more information about iOS 4.2.1 and how it’ll affect all devices. Make sure you read it and heed their warnings when updating. It’s looking like older devices will have an easy upgrade route to a jailbreakable 4.2.1. Newer devices are (as of now) tethered. I urge anyone who wants to upgrade to weigh their options before deciding to upgrade. You may lose your jailbreak or be tethered. A tethered jailbreak basically means if your phone battery dies or you need to reboot, you’ll need to be connected to a computer to enter into a jailbreak state again. They’re somewhat of a pain and I’d suggest waiting for an untethered jailbreak. You probably won’t be waiting long. Until then, make sure you have your 4.1 SHSH blobs saved via Cydia or TinyUmbrella!

Redsn0w — the lightweight, multi-platform jailbreaking, unlocking and customizing tool for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 1G, iPod touch 2G, and iPod touch 3G — has been updated to 0.9.6 Beta2, which allows Custom IPSW installation with Windows. Missing from this update is iPad and AppleTV support, which is currently supported by pwnagetool for OSX, but word is that chpwn is working on a windows version of pwnagetool.

Redsn0w can be used to install custom IPSWs that will keep your baseband firmware from updating and allowing you to unlock with ultrasn0w. Redsn0w works by putting your device into a special DFU mode which is required for installation of custom IPSWs.

The iPhone Dev-Team has also posted an update on redsn0w+limera1n fun:

It looks like geohot’s recent limera1n exploit for iPhone3GS/iPhone4/iPad/ipt3g/ipt4g/atv2g will be very beneficial to jailbreakers and unlockers for the next few months (at least). geohot’s limera1n program and the alternative greenpois1on program both use his same exploit (although greenpois0n refuses to tell you that, FWIW), and hopefully SHAtter can be saved for some later device.

Were you waiting for a Windows version of custom IPSW installation or are you waiting for iOS 4.2? Let us know…

It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g. Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.

If you use the ultrasn0w unlock, they tell you to wait for pwnagetool as redsn0w requires you to update with Apple’s firmware which might shut down the possibility for you to unlock “forever”.

iPhone Dev-Team member, MuscleNerd has announced that redsn0w 0.9 is officially out of beta and is now available in both Mac and Windows flavors.

“redsn0w 0.9beta3 results were good, may as well take it out of beta: http://is.gd/7ppQO (new: ipt3G and IPCC tethering)”

This version of redsn0w supports all iPhone and iPod touches running the 3.0 and 3.1.2 firmware. If you need to perform a carrier unlock on your iPhone 2G, redsn0w can do that for you but for the 3G and 3GS you must use Cydia to install blacks0w for baseband 04.26 and ultrasn0w for baseband 05.11. And yes, for late model 3GS devices you are still limited to a tethered jailbreak.

For the full details and download links be sure to check out the official redsn0w 0.9 wikee.

The iPhone Dev-Team is back, this time with the first beta of RedSn0w 0.9 for Mac and Windows. Version 0.9 will allow for jailbreaking, unlocking, and customizing of the iPhone OS 3.0/3.1.2 software. It is important to note that this beta supports every iPhone and iPod touch with the exception of the iPod touch G3. (That will be supported after the beta period is over.)

For quite some time now blackra1n has been the most-used tool to get your jailbreak on but the way this new version of redsn0w works, could that change? You see this software uses the original Pwnage bootrom exploit from iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod 1G. What this means is the only way for Apple to combat it is via a hardware change. However, for the iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G running 3.1.2, things are a little different as they still use the USB exploit that is said to be going away with the iPhone 4.0.

Due to some last minute forum software changes, the Dev Team isn’t promoting the release yet, but if you’d like to check it out for yourself, the Mac version can be downloaded here while you can grab the Windows version here. (We’ll update with a link to the Dev Team post when it goes live).

The iPhone Dev Team updated their blog to let all of you jailbreak crazed iPhone owners that you can safely update to the latest software, OS 3.0.1. It is a fairly straight forward procedure with one little twist.

You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.

Sadly, George Hotz said you can forget using purplesn0w as it will not work. You may be wondering why not? The answer is he doesn’t know.

And for those of you curious as to whether or not ultrasn0w is still capable of unlocking a 3.0.1 device, yes it does. The 3.0.1 software update does not change your baseband so you are good to go.

If you’ve tried the Dev Teams process how did it go? Let us know in the comments!

Three of the most popular tools on the scene have been updated to be fully compatible with the iPhone 3GS: The Dev Teams software unlock – ultrasn0w, their jailbreak software – redsn0w (via torrent for Windows, Mac, Linux), and saurik’s popular iPhone theming tool, Winterboard (via Cydia).

Two hours ago saurik twittered the following:

The newly released 0.9.2958 versions of MobileSubstrate and WinterBoard (upgraded to support ARM7/Thumb2) should now work on the iPhone 3GS

That was followed by a quick tweet from the Dev Team:

Released: redsn0w 0.8 (incl. 3GS, hactivate, linux) http://is.gd/1pRlV . Ultrasn0W 0.8 (incl. 3GS support) (see Cydia).

So it looks like purplera1n forced the Dev Team to respond by finally releasing their jailbreak software. Good news for all of you iPhone 3GS owners out there today, now you have two jailbreak solutions for your iPhone 3GS. Which will you choose?

For more jailbreak discussion be sure to check out TiPb’s Jailbreak Central.

Update: The Dev Team have updated their blog since the release of the new software, for more information on why they decided to release it and more check it out!

The illustrious iPhone Dev-Team says that the 24Kpwn techniques, originally developers as part of the iPod touch 2G jailbreak efforts, look like they just might work on the iPhone 3GS as well!

This is great news, but how did it happen? Why didn’t Apple fix this in their normal cat&mouse fashion? Well it seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unintended early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS

They’re also confident that the recently released ultrasn0w unlock will work on the iPhone 3GS once they get the jailbreak up and running.

No word on a time table for all this yet, but would-be jailbreakers keep them fingers crossed…!

(And for those still itching to customize the iPhone 3G, Jeremy now has full redsn0w jailbreak and ultrasn0w unlock guides up for both Mac OS X and Windows PCs)

[Thanks to XM_JDM in the TiPb iPhone Forums for catching this!]

Disclaimer – Neither TiPb nor I take any responsibility for any problems/issues/bricking/etc. that may occur while using this software to modify your iPhone. Please be aware of what you are doing. This will NOT work with iPhone 3GS.

There has been a lot of buzz going on in the forums regarding jailbreaking the iPhone 3.0 software lately, and a lot of questions to go along with it!. Today we’re going to take a deeper look at the exact steps you have to take to get your iPhone 3G with the 3.0 software, jailbroken on your Windows PC machine.

Let’s get started, after the jump!

Get the tools

First and foremost make sure your iPhone is updated to the 3.0 firmware. If you’re not yet running 3.0, update via iTunes.

All good? Okay, next make sure your iPhone is not connected to your PC. Next you will need to download the following files:

redsn0w 0.7.2

iPhone OS 3.0 for iPhone 3G (IPSW)

Jailbreak Process

Now double click on the redsn0w file you just download to open the redsn0w application. You will then be prompted to select the 3.0 IPSW file you downloaded. Do as instructed now. Once it is successfully identified press next to continue.

Now you will have to select whether you’d like Cydia, Icy, or both installed on your phone. You must install at least one of them. Make sure your choices are checked and press next.

Next you will be connecting your iPhone 3G to your PC. Once your device is connected, hold the power button until the “Slide to Power Off” appears – then slide to power it off. Press next.

Redsn0w will not put your iPhone 3G into DFU mode. Be sure to follow the onscreen instructions exactly. Start by holding down the power button for 3 seconds.

Hold down both both the power button as well as the home button for 10 seconds.

Finally release the power button while continuing to hold the home button down until redsn0w detects your iPhone 3G.

The device will now reboot once it is detected by redsn0w.

Redsn0w will now begin the process of uploading the new ramdisk.
Once this is complete you will be notified that the jailbreak process is complete. Click the Finish button.

Even though redsn0w completed it’s process your iPhone will still be finishing up. This can take up to 5 minutes. Be patient, when it’s done you will have a jailbroken iPhone 3G with Cydia/Icy on the SpringBoard.

Unlocking Process

Now if you are looking to unlock your iPhone follow these steps below.

If you are unlocking for T-Mobile USA be sure to disable 3G.

Run Cydia or Icy

Add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”.

Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w.

Reboot your iPhone 3G.

Enjoy your freshly unlocked iPhone 3G running the 3.0 software!

First and foremost make sure your iPhone is updated to the 3.0 firmware. If you’re not yet running 3.0, update via iTunes.

All good? Okay, next make sure your iPhone is not connected to your Mac. Next you will need to download the following files:

NOTE: iPhone 3G S need not apply!

While I don’t have anywhere near the midichlorians Jeremy has for all things Jailbreak, I can tell when the infamous iPhone Dev-Team has their game on:

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X (there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac until we have this problem resolved).

They point out that that redsn0w provides similar functionality to Quickpwn, and provide more instructions in their full post.

As always, experts only and proceed completely at your own risk. If you don’t understand something — put your iPhone down and back away slowly!

If you need help, check out our iPhone Jailbreak Central forums.

The iPhone dev team have posted a tethered “redSn0w” Jailbreak for the 2nd generation iPod touch. They are providing it with expert-only instructions, and a strict warning that they won’t be providing ANY support for it (if you ask for help, it means you shouldn’t be using it, and they’ll literally ban you from their site).

However, they also say they’re working on an un-tethered Jailbreak, which will hopefully be both much easier to use, and enjoy some level of support.

If you’re a supra-command-line ninja, however, and absolutely can’t wait, go get it now…

So if you are a Twitter user, and follow the Dev Team (@iphone_dev), you may have noticed an interesting early hour post. So it begins, all of the crazy rumors on what this new code word means. Rumors and speculation all set aside, our very own Rene, had a very good idea… iPod touch 2G Jailbreak perhaps?

It seemed like the iPod touch was being left behind ever since iPhone 3G was released. Most likely due to the Dev Team putting all of their effort into a iPhone 3G unlock. Which is very much appreciated and a good thing for all of you iPhone owners out there. For you iPod Touch owners out there, we’ve heard rumblings that redsn0w will drop on or around January 30. So sit tight for a few more weeks.

For more information about @redsn0w be sure to follow it via Twitter!

The cat and mouse game continues on!

[Thanks for the tips - Scott, jamesus, and Rene!]
