Redsn0w (0.9.6 Beta2) updated to allow Custom IPSW installation with Windows

Redsn0w -- the lightweight, multi-platform jailbreaking, unlocking and customizing tool for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 1G, iPod touch 2G, and iPod touch 3G -- has been updated to 0.9.6 Beta2, which allows Custom IPSW installation with Windows. Missing from this update is iPad and AppleTV support, which is currently supported by pwnagetool for OSX, but word is that chpwn is working on a windows version of pwnagetool.

Redsn0w can be used to install custom IPSWs that will keep your baseband firmware from updating and allowing you to unlock with ultrasn0w. Redsn0w works by putting your device into a special DFU mode which is required for installation of custom IPSWs.

redsn0w beta Jailbreak for iPhone3G, iPod touch 2 on iOS 4.1, 4.0

The Dev-Team have released a redsn0w beta Jailbreak for iPhone3G, iPod touch 2 on iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.0.

It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g. Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.

If you use the ultrasn0w unlock, they tell you to wait for pwnagetool as redsn0w requires you to update with Apple's firmware which might shut down the possibility for you to unlock "forever".

iPhone 3.0.1 redsn0w & ultrasn0w Safe for Jailbreak

The iPhone Dev Team updated their blog to let all of you jailbreak crazed iPhone owners that you can safely update to the latest software, OS 3.0.1. It is a fairly straight forward procedure with one little twist.

<

blockquote>You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.

Two hours ago saurik twittered the following:

That was followed by a quick tweet from the Dev Team:

Dev-Team - iPhone 3GS Jailbreak Possible via 24Kpwn, Unlock via ultrasn0w?

The illustrious iPhone Dev-Team says that the 24Kpwn techniques, originally developers as part of the iPod touch 2G jailbreak efforts, look like they just might work on the iPhone 3GS as well!

This is great news, but how did it happen? Why didn’t Apple fix this in their normal cat&mouse fashion? Well it seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unintended early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS

They're also confident that the recently released ultrasn0w unlock will work on the iPhone 3GS once they get the jailbreak up and running.
