Could Apple have more technical surprises in store for the iPhone? They’ve asked the FCC to keep photographs and details secret for 45 days, so who knows? We’ve already heard about the 512MB of RAM hiding inside, but Apple is still playing it coy:

“Although Apple has begun to market the device publicly, these documents reveal technical and design information that has not been publically disclosed in such marketing and that is protected by Apple as confidential and proprietary secrets.”

Speculate away. Come next Thursday, there ought to be tear-downs aplenty to find out.

TiPb mentioned this a couple times in passing — that the iPad perhaps didn’t show things like multitasking and better notifications because it’s running iPhone 3.2 and those will be iPhone 4.0 features, likely only to debut in March — but now Boy Genius seems to think (hope?) this is a real possibility as well.

It would certainly fit with Apple’s hyper-secretive modus operandi, and if you remember back to 2007, the original iPhone received additional features (a glass screen, YouTube app) before it shipped. Granted, there’s only 2-3 months here and not 6, but would it surprise anyone to see the iPad ship with 3.2, only for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad to all see 4.0 beta in March, and general release in June/July?

Said owner Bud Haley:

“Apple found us, they’re trying to show us as a hip and cool spot for the 20-something crowd.”

A few days ago we mentioned Ars’ iPhone expert, Erica Sadun was taking the lifting of iPhone OS 2.2′s NDA as an opportunity to dump code and sift for gold. Turns out she’s not only found some in the way of “hidden” TV-out features in iPhone 2.2, she’s sacrificed her well earned turkey day to experiment with them. From her previous post, here’s what’s at work:

The MPTVOutWindow class allows your iPhone to send its video to a connected TV rather than to the built-in screen. Intended to be used with movies, the unpublished class creates a live video feed that is sent out through the iPhone’s connector port. End-users will need to buy a video adapter or cable to use this functionality.

Early days still, but fairly awesome stuff. Can’t wait to see what she and other developers — not to mention Apple eventually — come up with!
