Much like the other TiPb staff, my most used apps are the native applications that come pre-installed on the iPhone and iPad, but unfortunately they don't meet all my needs. I have spent a lot of time (more than I would like to admit) in the App Store looking for applications that fit my needs, and I have found a bunch that I use on a daily basis.

Camera +

I love to take pictures with my iPhone 4, for a cell phone camera it can take some rather stunning pictures, but sometimes you need just a small edit or two to make it what you really like. Camera + allows me to not only take great pictures, but it loads quicker than the stock camera, and allows me to further crop and edit my photos than the stock one allows. The additional filters and edits allow me to take a standard picture, spice it up a bit and then share it right from the app if I wish.

$0.99 - App Store Link

Sonos

One of my favorite gadgets that I got this year was a Sonos system, and the ability to control it from my iPhone makes it even better. The Sonos controller is only helpful if you have a Sonos system to use it with, but it allows me to easily manage multiple zones of audio in my house, set alarms, download firmware updates for the system and much more. If you have a Sonos system this application is a must have on your iOS device.

Free - App Store Link

Tweetbot

Twitter is a great social media tool, and Tweetbot does a great job of allowing you to make the most out of Twitter in an enjoyable fashion. With added features like double and triple tap, swiping left and right and more the application is not only packed with features, but absolutely beautifully designed. If you enjoy a well designed, feature loaded application that won't break the bank, this is a great choice.

$2.99 - App Store Link

Google +

Google+ isn't such a hit all around with everyone, but being an Android user also (insert your boo here) I love Google+ and the iPhone application offers a pretty good experience for it. Google+ is a great way to communicate with a wide variety of people and the threaded replies to posts keep it nice and organized. The iPhone application appears to receive as much support from Google as the Android version which makes me happy, and the control of the notifications is great with tons of options.

Free - App Store Link

AirToDo

Recently in an effort to remain organized, and become more productive I have begun using Google Tasks since I live in my Gmail inbox, and can easily add tasks to be reminded about at a later time. Finding an application that offered solid sync, push notifications and some added features was a bit of a struggle but AirToDo has nailed every feature I needed, and more. Being able to set reminders by time and date is awesome, and you can add notes, locations, and more which help keep you nice and organized.

$0.99 - App Store Link

Ashley and Georgia stab hate at the Playstation Vita's proprietary memory sticks, talk after-date communication protocols and keeping your timeline clean, get challenged by the CrackBerry Nation, and give their holiday device, accessory, and app picks! This is Girls Gone Gadgets!

Girl eyes for the gadget guys

After a date, so you wait for the guy to contact you first? How long should you wait? Has SMS and BBM replaced the phone call for pre- and post-date banter?

Adult language -- is it okay over BBM? SMS? On semi-public sites like Twitter or Facebook? Do I need to keep my timeline clean? What about during a date? Can I go all Samuel L Jackson -- or Ashley Esqueda -- on them?

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

Brodit car mount - @chrisoldroyd

This week I decided to source a car mount for my iPhone 4S. Having previously used Brodit mounts, I was happy to look at them again and boy was I not disappointed.

Brodit mounts are quite simply the best car mounts you can get for any device, they make them for all the popular phones but who cares about that, only the iPhone matters anyway! There are two parts to the mounting system. The first part is called a Proclip and this part is car specific. The clips are all designed to fix in some way to your car’s interior without the need for any fixings and there is never any damage when they are removed.

Once you have your Proclip chosen, you then select your iPhone holder; they come in loads of different configurations, some with chargers and some with simple pass through connectors and others without anything. These holders then screw into the Proclip and that's it done!

The iPhone slots in perfectly and they are solid as a rock, a perfect way to mount your iPhone in your car, I cannot praise these mounts highly enough, they are simply the best!

[Brodit]

CatPaint - @sethclifford

"CatPaint is the premier cat-based image editor for the iPhone and iPod Touch."

And with that, my life was forever changed. Cats... and LASERS. That's all you need to know.

I'm having a busy, stressful week and this app makes me smile every time I look at it. Also, the icon is so epic, I want to weep at its awesomeness.

[CatPaint - $0.99 - iTunes link]

My iPhone 4's Sleep/Wake Button decided to stop working. It doesn't click in and doesn't turn the screen off.

After the Apple Store told me I'd have to pay £120 for an out of warranty repair, I sought other options.

I came across 'AssistiveTouch' in the Accessibility settings. When you turn it on, a little 'floating' dot appears on the screen which opens a new menu. This menu allows you to perform hardware actions, without having the press any physical buttons.

Some of the options include, rotating the device, simulating a shake, pressing the home button and of course, pressing the sleep button.

While pressing the on-screen sleep button isn't as easy as just pressing the physical sleep button, its definitely better than spending £120 on the repair.

This past week in the Northeast we had a bit of an unexpected snow
storm blow through. It's the first time in all my years I've ever seen
such a huge snow storm come through New Jersey in October, and I tried
my best to be prepared. I knew I would be out of the house running
errands since it was the weekend and wanted to keep up with the latest
conditions as best I could, for which I'd obviously turn to my phone.
While the stock weather app on iOS is decent for the most part, I knew
I'd need something that went above and beyond to keep me updated on
the go -- for that I discovered Weather Alert USA.

Weather Alert USA is a great app for weather geeks. Not only does it
provide current temperatures and conditions, but it also has amazing
depth when it comes to severe weather alerts which is just what I
needed. It allows you to easily setup alerts by location and will
notify you (with a rather annoying alert tone) of any weather alerts
in your area. Push alerts are available for nearly everything you can
think of, from hurricanes to winter storm warnings to dust advisories
and more.

Day to day weather reports are a breeze as well as Weather Alert USA
gives you easy access to weekly and hourly conditions, radars and
warnings, detailed weather maps, sunrise/sunset times and much more.
Truly one of the best weather apps I had found and more than adequate
to keep even the biggest weather buff in the know. Of all the weather
apps available to iPhone users, Weather Alert USA definitely gets my
pick as number one.

Music is a huge part of my daily routine, and recently I picked up a Sonos system for my house, and the Sonos controller for iOS makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable. If you have not heard of Sonos it is a wireless speaker system for your house or office which you can use your favorite music channels like Pandora, MOG, Spotify and many others. Being able to control the two different zones in my house, what is playing, and how loud it is all from the comfort of any place I can take my iPhone with me. If you have a Sonos system be sure to check the controller out, and if you don't have a Sonos system yet, check out our reviews.

Seth picked Instapaper a couple of weeks ago. Good for him. He got first crack at explaining why he likes it so much, and his reasons are probably much more lucid and reasoned than mine. But I'm taking my shot anyway:

Instapaper lets me read stuff. That's it.

And that's much more than I'd otherwise manage to do. The sad truth is the more I write the less I have time to read. When I come across a fascinating, insightful, provocative, or otherwise interesting article on the web, I almost never have time to read it then and there. And that means, without a way to triage and save them for later, like Kaizer Soze's devil, with a puff -- or in this case a tap -- they'd be gone.

Instapaper is that way to triage and save. If an article grabs me, I knock it over to Instapaper and then later, when I'm waiting for something, when I'm between states, when I finally get to take a break, they're waiting for me.

Everything I want to read, all in my pocket.

That's Instapaper.

I love Tower Defense games. It's my passion. Siegecraft is my current Tower Defense of choice. It has gorgeous graphics and cool weapons, and it's a lot of fun. It's a little more interactive than most, and you have to aim so that adds to the challenge. Plus, can I say trebuchets and catapults? It's universal, It's adorable, it's enjoyable, and best of all -- right now it's only a buck!

Newsstand - @Alli_Flowers

I admit I was one of those laughing loudest when iOS 5 was first introduced with Newsstand. It seemed especially silly on the iPhone. So I never gave it a second look - until yesterday when I got my iPad 2.

I started looking through it to see if they offered anything of any interest whatsoever, and lo-and-behold, there was Wired magazine. I love Wired and already subscribe. Sometimes I don't read it because I'll throw it down with a pile of other mail and just never get back to it. Or it's one more thing I don't want to stuff in my purse. I have a ton of excuses. But I love e-reading, so I linked my account and was up and running in no time.

Newsstand actually makes reading a magazine a pleasant experience, and it's definitely easier to carry around a bunch of magazines on your iPad than in your purse, briefcase, or hands. Side to side scrolling goes page to page, with up/down to read an entire article. I got a kick out of some of the ads and some of the headlines being animated. It's more than just an e-magazine. It should be like this!

The selection is still minimal - there aren't any other magazines that I either already subscribe to, or have any interest in, but that should come with time. If you haven't already done so, take a look and see some of the samples they give you just so you can get a feel for the product. Then just wait for your favorite publication!

I used to hate blogging from my iPhone or iPad, but the WordPress app for iOS has come a long way since then. Now, I can make a lot of formatting edits and insert pics at the exact size I want - this was a biggie for me.

Combined with Photo Stream, blogging photos of my daughter with my iPad is quick, painless, and can be done while relaxing on the couch. WordPress on my iPhone is great for blogging on the go or for correcting a typo that I notice on a TiPb post.

I used to strictly blog from my laptop or desktop, but about 80% of my personal blogging is now done mobile thanks to the WordPress app for iOS. I'll admit that most of TiPb writing is still done on the desktop, but that's because it involves much more and it's just faster and more productive to do it on my iMac or MacBook.

I haven't been playing too many games these days but this one has me hooked. It's currently featured in the App Store and on sale for 50% off regular price. I am definitely glad I stumbled upon it while simply browsing.

If you enjoy games like Words With Friends or Scrabble this is definitely a game you'll want to pick up. It's somewhat of a fusion between Scrabble, Tetris, and the old school slider puzzles. You know, the ones you'd have to slide the pieces around to make a picture with only one free space. You simply swap letters either left, right, up, down, or diagonal to make words. You only get so many swaps though and for every 250 points you score you'll earn an additional 5 swaps. When you run out of swaps the game ends.

It's definitely a great time killer if you need something that isn't fact paced and you can pick up and leave off at your leisure. It also features GameCenter integration where you can unlock achievements as well.

Playing this game reminds me of the great funhouse rides at the amusement park when I was growing up, where creepy and sometimes scary characters jump out at you from out of nowhere. I've only played the first few levels so far, but I love the game's music, the fun and challenging gameplay, its sharp graphics, and the amazing sound/visual effects.

As per the game's description in the App Store, your goal in the game is to lead a fearful blob of pudding through a spooky haunted house and scary monsters with freakish weapons and get to the exit as fast as you can.

It's of course a very fitting game for the Halloween season that just passed, but it's so likeable and addictive that I can definitely see myself playing it all year long. It has Game Center built-in, which is nice. I found the first 3 or 4 levels to be fairly easy, but beyond that, it definitely gets more challenging.

It must be music day here at TiPb. Sonos, which we reviewed late last year, just let us know that they've updated their Sonos Controller App for the iPhone, adding a few nifty features which, when combined with iTunes music now being completely DRM-free, adds a whole heap of functionality to an already automagic system:

Wake to music with Sonos – Create unique playlists and set wake-up alarms with your iPhone for every room with a Sonos

Fall asleep to music with Sonos — Set timers for any room to turn off the music automatically

Totally computer-free setup – Search for and set up network music folders without touching a computer

It's a free update, so if you're rocking a Sonos system, be sure to head on over to the iTunes App Store and pick it up.

Sonos is a "multi-room music system" that lets you wirelessly stream music to any "zone" in your house either independently or synchronized together using a centralized controller. And, oh yeah, that centralized controller can be an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Chad, with the help of his friend, gave us a first look at using Sonos with the iPhone in lieu of its traditional controller, and raised some great pros (total iPhone control of all music, in every room, of your Sonos-enabled home) and cons (iPhone relegated merely to control, and not leveraged for the media-powerhouse it is in its own right as well) about the experience. So great, in fact, that when Sonos offered TiPb a limited-time demo to test it out, I jumped at the chance.

Since I'm not a Sonos user, not an audiophile, and not particularly interested in struggling anymore with complicated setup procedures, I thought it would be ideal to approach this from a new-user perspective, and one used to the iPhone ecosystem where things (often) "just work".

How did it go? Find out after the break!

Hardware

Delivered in the Sonos box we received were two ZonePlayer 90s and one ZoneBridge. They were kind enough to offer test speakers, but I had that covered.

ZoneBridge

For Sonos to function, at least one of the ZonePlayers needs to be plugged directly into your WiFi router. If you don't happen to have your router conveniently located to one of your sound systems, Sonos provides the ZoneBridge. Just hook that up instead and then put your ZonePlayers wherever else you want them. An elegant enough solution until the ZonePlayers can lose that one-hardwire requirement and go pure WiFi, which given the speeds and range of 802.11N shouldn't be far off. (Right now Sonos prefers to create their own, exclusive Mesh sub-network off the hard-line).

ZonePlayer 90

With the router very close to one of the sound systems I was testing, I could skip the ZoneBridge and plug the ZonePlayer 90 directly into an Airport Extreme. I had to yank out another device to make room for it, but the ZP90 includes a second network jack to give any such de-placed components a new sub-home.

The device itself is nice looking, a white rounded square shape familiar to anyone who likes the Apple aesthetic, and it sits raised on four molded legs. The small size, at 5.4 x 5.5 x 2.9 in, means it doesn't take up a lot of space and can fit in pretty much anywhere (no doubt, however, someone somewhere will complain it's not in rack-mount friendly format -- thank goodness for that!) The front sports a mute button and a volume rocker, and a second Sonos logo (the first being on the top). Design quibble: the buttons, especially the iconography, isn't as beautiful as the device itself, and twice as many logos is half as strong branding. (Especially when the brand was already smartly enough chosen to be readable backwards and forwards, upside and down).

The back holds the ports. From the left is power, RCA stereo in and out, 2 network ports, and digital coax and optical out. This means it should support any home theater, stereo system, self-powered speakers, and other similar sound equipment. The RCA in also means iPods (with the audio out cables), DVD players, TVs, etc. can be plugged in and streamed throughout the system as well.

Unlike many Apple products, the ZP 90 came with some cables! Along with the power cord were RCA connectors and a network cable. No digital cables, unfortunately, so BYO coax or optical if that's how your sound system is set up.

Setup was extremely simple. Just plug the power into the ZP 90, attach a network cable between at least one ZP 90 and your router, and plug in your sound system via any one of the input ports listed above. It took all of a few seconds. If you have more than one ZP 90, the steps are the same as above, minus the hard wire router connection -- WiFi only, baby!

ZonePlayer 120

Though we didn't test one, it should be noted Sonos also has a ZonePlayer 120 available that is similar to the ZP 90 but includes a built in amplifier and direct speaker connections so it can basically serve as its own music system -- no pre-existing home theater, self-powered speakers, or other audio source required.

Software

Setup

The Sonos Controller iPhone app is available, of course, from the iTunes App Store. That means it can be downloaded directly to the iPhone or iPod Touch, or downloaded and synced over via iTunes on the desktop.

Note: Sonos has an installation CD that you can load up on your desktop or laptop to setup the system, but since this is an iPhone blog, I skipped this step and decided to with a full on iPhone-only setup.

Once the Sonos Controller app is installed on the iPhone, tapping it gives you the option to set up your zone. If you've ever used a setup wizard, you'll feel right at home. Hold down the mute and volume up buttons on the ZP 90, the iPhone app detects them, and setup is just a few simple taps and roll-selectors away. If you're setting up more than one zone, which it asks whenever you finish setting up the last on, just repeat the process.

It couldn't be more simple.

Use

Sonos deserves high-marks for the app. It respects iPhone design and user experience paradigms, looks great, and is easy and most importantly -- intuitive to use. Right away they present a very familiar iPhone media browser where you can choose what kind of music you want to listen to, with each choice sliding over narrower sub-options until you ultimately get exactly what you want. This could range from choosing radio to a genre of music to a radio station playing that genre. In addition to internet radio, Sonos (if you install the desktop software) also supports your existing computer-based music collection (though not iTunes DRM-protected content -- record label FAIL again!), as well as services like Audible.com, Napter, and select others.

Don't want to dig through menus? Not a problem. That's why search was invented, and why the iPhone app supports it. Just type in the title or some keywords and, if it's available, it will pop right up.

Once you find something, you can easily add it to "favorites" so you can quickly return to it later.

Select which "zones" the music should play in and, once it starts, volume controls are available to get it to just the right level. Each "zone" can be independent -- for example an MP3 file can be playing in the bedroom and internet radio could be on in the living room, and the iPhone app offers complete control over both.

Alternatively, "zones" can be combined so that the same content, in perfect synchronicity, and be played in multiple or all "zones" simultaneously. Perfect for that party that refuses to stay contained in a single room.

The interface even shows which "zones" are active, so if power is turned off on one system, you can tell it's unavailable. Plug it back in, and it pops back up.

The Sonos Controller app even supports queuing, so you can create a on-the-go playlist for your streaming music/sound content.

Again, as Chad said, it would be nice if the iPhone itself could also be set up as a portable "zone", carrying the same synched content with you around the house, and playing along with the same queue, but if that was an option, we couldn't find it. Maybe version 2.0?

Conclusion

The Sonos system just works, and with the iPhone controller app, it makes Apple's amazing convergence device all the more amazingly convergent. Would that my home were bigger, and I had more friends to party with more often (like in all those spy movies where the target is always throwing a huge bash just conveniently that very night -- that's the scale I'm thinking of!)

What Sonos has accomplished with this app right out of the gate is awesome. If anyone already has Sonos and an iPhone or iPod Touch, and doesn't have this app... what's the matter with you? Go get it now! If anyone has an iPhone and multiple rooms in which they want a highly scalable, superbly controllable audio experience, Sonos is definitely something to look at (or to ask for as a holiday gift! -- perfect timing!)

Pricing and Availability

Sonos is available online via the Sonos Store, or at many fine electronic retailers. MSRP for the ZoneBridge is $99, and the ZonePlayer is $349. Of course, street prices can and often will be lower. Bundles are also available, although I didn't see any without a controller, which iPhone/iPod Touch owners no longer need. A tad pricier than the previous generation, but these are likely premiums for the latest technology, and will no doubt drop over time as all technology prices do.

Before you get excited, I realize that not all of you know what Sonos is. Sonos is a way to control all of the music in your home (including Internet radio such as Pandora and Last FM), room by room.

Needless to say, the announcement from Sonos that you can now control all of this via your iPhone is really exciting! I personally don't use Sonos, but I have a friend that does, and he filled me on on the scoop...

I have 5 zones of Sonos in my house. And let me give you a break down of why I use this product versus others. Sonos allows me the ability to access several sources of music via a wireless hand held controller.

This controller has hard buttons, a touch sensitive scroll wheel, and a large LCD display for metadata and navigation. Now with the controller I can access some amazing things. First, I can access any shared music files on my personal computer including my itunes library. Beyond that the music selection is near limitless. I can access several on-line subscription services (free 30 day trials included with the purchase). Rhapsody, Pandora, Napster, Sirius, and 1500 pre- loaded internet radio stations, all from my handheld controller(s)! I can search via all the expected criteria, and build Pandora stations right from the controller! The Sonos system transmits this data wirelessly from a sending unit my router out to each room, or "zone". In each room is a Sonos receiver/amplifier connected to various speaker types depending on the specific room. This is where it gets fun. With the controller I can turn each zone on or off, select the music of choice, and control the volume of each zone independent of one another! I can "link" zones to have them all playing the same music, or not!

Now that I have explained the Sonos concept you are wondering where the iPhone comes in to play right? Well, enter the new Sonos controller application! Being that the controllers are a cool $400 apiece (and worth it!), how much cooler would it be to have Sonos at my finger tips from the moment I walk in to my wifi network right here on my $200 iPhone! Well, being that Sonos is wifi based, 801.11-ish, its is all possible.

Pros: I get total control of my zones on my iPhone. I love this, its brilliant.

Cons: I use Sonos as my alarm clock (thats right), but I can't control the alarm via the iPhone application.

Also, the iPhone should be a zone in itself! I could be mowing the lawn listening quite literally to almost anything I could ever want. Hopefully these changes are just an update away!

You can find out more about Sonos and other cool "entertainment solutions" by visiting Entertainment Solutions in their store or online.
