Plantronics BackBeat GO stereo Bluetooth headphones review

Back at PAX East I met up with the guys at Plantronics, and they gave me a set of light and sporty Backbeat GO stereo Bluetooth headphones to try out. They adopt the ultra-light look that seems to be all the rage in stereo Bluetooth accessories. As if the form factor wasn't enough to entice music-loving busybodies, the Plantronics Bluetooth guy told me that there's a light oleophobic coating on the headphones to fend off sweat.

iOS 4.1 features: AVRCP stereo Bluetooth controls

iOS 3.0 introduced A2DP (advanced audio distribution profile) stereo bluetooth playback to iPhone but for some reason Apple never added the accompanying AVRCP (audio/video remote control profile) to go with it... until the new iOS 4.1 beta.

Basically, in iOS 3 and iOS 4, you could play and pause music and other audio but you couldn't control things like volume. The buttons on the Bluetooth device simply didn't work. This was a show-stopper for many users who wanted and needed that kind of control -- for example, to use while driving.

Looks like they've got it now.

Pre-Review: Motorola HT820 Stereo Bluetooth Headset for iPhone 3.0

Come this “summer”, iPhone 3.0 — see our walkthrough — will allow iPhone 3G (and perhaps next-generation iPhone users) to enjoy new Bluetooth functionality including stereo headsets, both the A2DP audio and ARCP control protocols. For consumers, the Motorola HT820 Stereo Bluetooth headset (available from our sibling store, WMExperts) may be an option you want to consider come release day. For developers testing using the A2DP/ARCP profiles on the iPhone 3.0 Beta, they might even be something you want to consider now.

Dear Apple: Could We Have a Faster Way to Toggle Bluetooth on the iPhone?

A while back Dieter asked for a fast way to toggle Airplane Mode on the iPhone -- a triple click of the home button, perhaps. Yesterday he and I were talking about all the new Bluetooth functionality in iPhone 3.0 and the same point came up -- right now, to turn Bluetooth on or off you have to:

Wake the iPhone, Slide to Unlock, (type a Passcode perhaps), (return Home perhaps), tap Settings, tap General, tap Bluetooth, and then toggle the ON/OFF switch.
