A few tethering applications have appeared in the App Store only to be pulled very soon after. One such application was iTether, it appeared back in November 2011 and was pulled on the same day it launched. The app cost $14.99 and used USB to connect your Mac to your iPhone to use its data connection. The app bypassed the usual carrier tethering charges which probably explains why it was pulled.

Now the developer behind iTether has returned with a new service which is simply called Tether. The new service is based on HTML 5 so there is no need to source the app through the App Store.

"It was clear from our initial application iTether, there was enormous demand within the iPhone ecosystem," says Tim Burke, CEO of Tether. "It was unfortunate that Apple decided to remove our application, only 20 hours after we launched. However, this caused us to innovate. Our underlying patent-pending technology behind Tether for iPhone is unlike anything on the market." Tether's new version for the iPhone is purely based on HTML5 and creates a completely wireless connection over AdHoc. This circumvents the need of buying the application directly from Apple's App Store and allows any iPhone or iPad with a data connection to allow tethering.

Tether is available as a once a year purchase of $30 and is compatible with Windows as well as Mac. There is currently no trial version so you can’t test it before you part with your money. You can see exactly how it works in the video below!

We've reported on the iPhone tethering situation, both unofficial and official, before, and last we heard AT&T was considering it as a $30 addition service charge. Now comes a rumor via MacBlogz that the price point is being reconsidered -- down to $10:

The biggest piece of information we learned was that AT&T is playing around with a $10 price-point. This made my eyes light up and I asked them how they could get away with charging a third of what was initially reported, here’s the response I got. “iPhone tethering is primarily an AT&T offering, but it involves Apple at least wanting or allowing the service, which they do. If it doesn’t function as expected, I know of a few people who may lose their jobs,” my colleague explained. “While you may think it’s as easy as streamlining our Blackberry tethering service over to the iPhone, it’s not. Connection may be tied into iTunes, and Apple is incredibly controlling when it comes to this space.”

So, would a $10 price tag make anyone here jump on the tether plans?

Depending on your carrier, their terms of service (TOS), and your willingness to break said terms and face possible consequences including death-by-over-billing, you can now tether you newly pwned/jailbroken iPhone 3G to your laptop to share the mobile 3G internet connection anywhere and everywhere you go (your coverage area, of course, may vary).

The process is a little involved, according to Macrumors (via Cre.ations.net):

Jailbreak your iPhone 3G. Install 3Proxy and Terminal. Create an ad-hoc Wi-fi network using your laptop. Join the network with your iPhone. Find the iPhone's IP address
Open Terminal and run the proxy program. Open Safari on your iPhone and open a web page. Configure your browser to use the proxy.

Not a 133t level hax0r? Don't worry. AT&T (and other carriers) might just offer this option, complete with inevitable bandwidth cap, 'natch, sometime in the next millennium...
