Twitter for iPhone isn't your early adopter, power user app. It's not designed fro the gadget nerd with tons of followers who engages in non-stop repartees with like-minded friends, peers, and colleagues all day. It for the new mainstream Twitter user who has very few followers, follows tons of celebrities, and is looking for more and better ways to find something... anything... to do on Twitter. Like it or not, since the last redesign, that's the the official Twitter app's target user now. And that's who they're improving things for with this update.

Georgia's most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011

So to get it out of the way, while I'm running iOS 5 on my iPad I'm still running iOS 4 on my iPhone. I need my jailbreak, the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak just went live yesterday, and I haven't had time to update yet. That's why many of my apps, and a couple of my most-used apps of 2011, other than Mail, Safari, etc. are mainly jailbreak apps. Oh, and games!

Vote now for the social networking app of the year [2011 TiPb Awards]

Not content with having one of the most popular apps in the history of iOS, Facebook launched a second -- Facebook Messenger to create a quicker, cleaner path to owning your conversations. While Facebook as diversifying, LinkedIn was differentiating, releasing a new version of their app with their own, finally unique take on the social experience.

Path also released a new version with a bold, breathtaking new user experience and slightly more picturesque and timeline based focus. Apple added yet another separate social network to their portfolio, this time Find my Friends which offers very fine grained privacy control wrapped it more stitched leather than a puffy couch. And Google got into the game in a huge way with Google+.

Twitter for iPhone shed it's Tweetie heritage and while power users howled, it just might have become more usable for the mainstream. Luckily power users had plenty of places to turn with Tweetbot offering an entirely different take, with that trademark Tapbots look and increasingly deep functionality, and Twittelator Neue offering eye-popping animation and amped up interactions.

Verbs also did the remarkable by showing how simply and elegantly instant messages could be handled on mobile.

Incredibly different, incredibly rich, it's hard to pick just nine, never mind one -- but that's your job. Vote up top and tell us why you voted they way you did in the comments! These are your awards, so get to it!

Twitter for iPhone gets updated, new design comes along with it

Twitter had begun rolling out a massive new design overhaul focused on consistency, which calling #letsfly, and is available now in a freshly updated Twitter for iPhone.

The #letsfly update aims to make your Twitter experience faster and simpler. Your main timeline is now called "Home" and your mentions are now "Connect" and they added a quick way to access hash tags and searches which is called "Discover". It certainly does look fresh and clean, and may be more accessible to new users.

On the down side, Direct Messages (DM's) have been buried under the "Me" tab, as has account switching. (Though you can swipe up to get DM's and left to switch accounts, slightly speeding up the process.)

Notably, this is the first major update since Loren Brichter -- the innovative developer behind the original Twitter for iPhone and Mac (called Tweetie before it was bought out) and iPad -- left Twitter a short time ago.

The #letsfly update for Twitter for iPhone is available now in the App Store.

Seriously Facebook? http://pic.twitter.com/0ifNsdY

Ok Facebook, enough with the flattery. http://pic.twitter.com/vSyHdpH
