Absinthe, the untethered jailbreak utility for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S has been updated to version 0.4 bringing compatibility with Leopard as well as a few other bug fixes.

Mac: added support for OSX 10.5, PPC and Intel CPU

added consistency check on startup to make sure required files are in place

Windows: fixed bug in payload generator that might cause a crash

If you are already jailbroken on iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 on your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 there isn’t a need to re-jailbreak with the latest update. This update seems to address issues with the process itself opposed with issues on board the device.

In any case, it’s good to see the jailbreak “dream team” hard at work to bring Absinthe to more users after it saw wide adoption after initial release.

If you’re looking for even more tweaks and utilities to install, check out our guide to the best jailbreak applications for iOS 5 as well as the other jailbreak resources below.
Want to jailbreak and unlock but need to know how to tell what bootrom your iPhone 3GS is running? There are two numbers in your settings that will be a dead giveaway as to what bootrom your phone has. You’ll need to know how to determine your bootrom in certain situations if you want to achieve a software unlock.

Open up Settings

Tap on General

Go to About

If you scroll down a bit you’ll see your serial number and your model number.

You can use one of these two numbers to determine if you have an older or newer bootrom.

Model number method

The easiest of the two is the model number. If your model number begins with MC, you have a newer bootrom. As you can see above, my serial starts with an MB. I have an older bootrom.

Serial number method

Another way you can check is by looking at the 4th and 5th digits of your serial number. If it is lower than around week 35, your bootrom is older. I’d say the model number method is the most efficient but you can use both to determine your bootrom version.

iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users have reason to rejoice today – you can finally untethered jailbreak! They stated earlier today the jailbreak was almost complete and ready for release. It didn’t take very long as the tool is already available.

As a note – this jailbreak will support iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1. Here are the requirements for each device –

iPhone 4S – iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1

iPad 2 and all GSM and CDMA wifi only devices – iOS 5.0.1

If you plan on jailbreaking your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 as soon as a jailbreak for Apple A5 chipset-powered devices is released, update to iOS 5.0.1 ASAP if you haven’t already.

If/when Apple releases an iOS 5.0.2 patch or iOS 5.1 they’ll most likely stop signing iOS 5.0.1 pretty quickly. iOS 5.1 patches the current exploit used on iOS 5.0.1. That means if you don’t update before then, you’ll be stuck waiting for jailbreak developers to find a new exploit for iOS 5.1 and we have no idea how long that’ll take.

So the moral of this story is if you’d like to jailbreak sooner rather than later, update your devices to iOS 5.0.1 now. If you’ve got an iPhone 4 or other Apple A4 chipset device, you can jailbreak untethered now on iOS 5.0.1.

Chronic Dev Team member pod2g has again teased everyone waiting for an iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak. This time he has released a picture of an iPad 2 running Cydia after being jailbroken by the soon to be released untethered iOS 5.01 jailbreak.

We have already seen a demo video of an iPhone 4S running with an untethered jailbreak a few days ago and we were told then that we only had to wait a few more. Now with this release, all we hear is “No more to say!” We assume that this means that the untethered jailbreak for A5 devices is now complete and may be released as early as this week.

Non-A5 iPhone and iPad owners can untethered jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 right now.

pod2g has updated his blog with a video by Chronic Dev Team member, DHowett, running an untethered iPhone 4S jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.

pod2g has updated his blog with a video by Chronic Dev Team member, DHowett, running an untethered iPhone 4S jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1. The video runs down everything you’d expect from rebooting the device to show an untethered state and launching Cydia and showing that the device ID is indeed an iPhone 4S. Considering the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 both run the Apple A5 chipset and weren’t vulnerable to previous exploits.

pod2g says this means we should only have a few more to wait now. Not sure if “a few more” implies days, months, light years, or some other measure of time. For now, we’ll just have to sit back and be patient for what should be just a little while longer. Non-A5 iPhone and iPad owners can untethered jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 right now.

With the last update regarding the yet to be released iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak coming to us from pod2g, we learned that a “dream team” had been assembled to help tackle a sandboxing issue in the Apple A5, now the latest information is brought to everyone via Planetbeing where he took to Twitter to note:

And we’re out of the sandbox with @saurik’s invaluable help! (well, at least there’s a PoC) Turning out more complex than X-Gold 618.

That of course doesn’t put an iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak in our hands right away but it does bring us one step closer to it finally becoming a reality.

Notorious iPhone hacker pod2g has updated the community letting everyone know a jailbreak “dream team” has been assembled to help tackle a sandboxing issue in the Apple A5, a vital part of the exploitation process necessary for an iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak.

@planetbeing, the legendary hacker behind iPhone Linux and lot of jailbreaks has joined the A5 research!

The famous @MuscleNerd, the leader of the iPhone Dev Team, who did a lot of tests for Corona and whom integrated it and made it simple in redsn0w is willing to help also.

And last, but not least @p0sixninja, the leader of the Chronic Dev Team, and my partner for years on iPhone security research has started to code and fuzz the Apple sandbox.

We now have a dream team to find a path for a public release of the A5 jailbreak.

Cross your fingers.

Most of you in the jailbreak community should instantly recognize these names, and the fact that they’re now all together working in unison towards the same goal means an A5 jailbreak shouldn’t be too much further out.

A couple of quick updates for those still waiting on Apple A5 device jailbreaks — namely iPhone 4S and iPad 2 — as well as an iOS 5.1 jailbreak.

For iPhone 4S and iPad 2 devices, @pod2g just tweeted the following:

made a step today for the A5. With some luck we could expect a release in a week.

As to iOS 5.1, @i0n1c seems to have something in the pipeline, so 2012 could get off to a strong start for team Jailbreak.

pod2g has updated his blog with more details on how the Corona untether actually works. If the deep inner workings of exploits such as this interest you, it’s definitely something you’ll want to check out.

Using a fuzzer, I found after some hours of work that there’s a format string vulnerability in the racoon configuration parsing code! racoon is the IPsec IKE daemon (http://ipsec-tools.sourceforge.net/). It comes by default with iOS and is started when you setup an IPsec connection.

Now you got it, Corona is an anagram of racoon .

Corona will untether all current A4 devices that were previously tethered under iOS 5.0.1. Still no more news on when a jailbreak will be available for A5 devices, namely the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

While jailbreaking already provides tons of functionality, there’s still room for improvement and expansion in 2012. Last year I did a list of jailbreak concepts Apple should implement and low and behold, they implemented quite a few of them. But that’s part of the game. Part of what spurs more innovation is creativity and pushing boundaries. And at the end of the day it’s really the user base that is the most useful when it comes to helping developers out. They can’t create it if they don’t know we want it. So this is our list of the top 5 things we’d like to see jailbreak accomplish in 2012.

A jailbreak for A5 devices

We already know pod2g is working on this. While we will most likely get one in 2012, I’m not excluding it as one of the biggest wants for many users. We just received an untethered jailbreak for A4 and older devices. Hopefully a jailbreak for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S aren’t that far behind. While an untethered version would be epic win, I’d take a tethered version for starters.

Cydia updates

While Cydia is probably one of the most used apps on my iOS devices, it can become rather frustrating at times. Saurik made some updates to Cydia in 2011 but nothing to get too excited about. Cydia could use a facelift and some speed enhancements.

While it may not be at the top of saurik’s list right now, I know Cydia is frustrating for many users on a day to day basis. Not to mention the organization of packages is rather daunting for many new jailbreakers. They have no idea where to start or what apps they should be downloading. Sure, they can always come to TiPb but for those not familiar, how about adding a jailbreak starter pack in Cydia? I know several new users revert back to stock quickly out of confusion and frustration.

I’d like to see Cydia step up its game to show users what jailbreak is all about. It isn’t about pirating apps and installing illegal software at all. It’s about enhancing and customizing your experience.

More iPad compatible apps and tweaks

While there is support for jailbroken iPads, it’s very minimal. I’d really like to see that change. As of right now, I really can’t find a good reason to jailbreak my iPad. A lot of this could have to do with the lack of support for current iPad 2 users. Jailbreak developers may not want to put the time and effort into supporting the low number of jailbroken iPads.

Hopefully a jailbreak for A5 devices will create more interest in jailbreaking the iPad. Even though there are a few good reasons to jailbreak the iPad, I’d like to find a reason I can not live without. I’d like to have a reason or find a jailbreak application compelling enough to make me not want to live without my iPad being jailbroken.

If I’m missing out on some to die for jailbreak utilities for iPad, please let me know. I’ve yet to find them.

More support updates from developers

After iOS 4 was released, Cydia was plagued with tons of apps and utilities that were never updated to support it. Even though jailbreak tool after jailbreak tool was released supporting almost every device on the market, tools were left to collect dust. Some of them were actually very useful utilities that I really missed using after updating. Things like changing keyboard styles were little tweaks that were left untouched for months.

Some developers are extremely good about updating their tools. Others are not. Where that happens, I’d really like to see new jailbreak developers step up and come out with new solutions. Heck, just improve upon someone else’s idea. It seemed as if the jailbreak community was left with a ton of tools that were left in limbo. A package may work, it may not, it may just crash your springboard. I’d like to see less of this.

Maybe this is something that needs to come bundled with updates to Cydia. This is another reason jailbreak may be off-putting to some new users. They download tweaks that aren’t compatible with their devices and when it isn’t stable, they restore and never give jailbreak another chance. We need to avoid experiences like this as developers.

A more unified jailbreak process

This one may be asking a bit too much but heck, I’ll throw it out there. While redsn0w and tools like it are pretty user friendly to begin with, there are tons of tools out there and that’s confusing to new users. What tool do they use? Is one not compatible with their device? Programs like ipswDownloader aim to make it easier for beginners, but a lot of beginners won’t know what an IPSW is let alone what the tool does, where to find it, or know why they need it.

If jailbreak developers could come together to make a great tool that accommodates all users, I think the jailbreak community would see a great benefit and many more users. I see tons of people in my office every day that bricked their device or jailbroke it with an incorrect tool. I also see people that searched and researched jailbreak online, became overwhelmed, and would rather come and pay me to do it correctly than mess something up themselves. I know there are tons of other users out there that are put off by the overwhelming amount of information and tools out there. Working together to find a way to make the process more streamlined would be time spent that would pay off in the long run.

Bottom line

I think my overall outlook on jailbreak is this – people buy Apple devices because of the experience and the ease of use. If jailbreak complicates things too much, they’ll stray away. Of course there will always be power users and ninjas that will put in the time to make it work. But the bottom line is that most iOS users just want their device to work and work well. If jailbreak developers can find ways to make the process and overall experience better, I think they’d see a lot more users willing to give it a try or a second runaround.

What do you guys want to see jailbreak developers aiming for in the coming year? Let us know!

Heard about the untethered jailbreak for the original iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and older models running iOS 5.0.1 and curious how to use it on your own device?. This jailbreak won’t yet work with newer, Apple A5 chipset-powered devices, namely the iPhone 4S or iPad 2, but if you own anything earlier, you’re in luck.

Supported devices

iPhone 4 (GSM & CDMA)

iPod touch 4th generation

iPad (orignal model)

iPhone 3GS

What you need

A supported device – please note this will not work for iPhone 4S or iPad 2

A Mac or PC

redsn0w 0.9.10b1 – Mac, Windows

Untether via the Corona Cydia package

If you’re already tethered jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1, you can untether your jailbreak using the Corona package in Cydia.

Untether via redsn0w

If for some reason you’d prefer using redsn0w to untether, you may do so. Just run the version of redsn0w linked above over your existing jailbreak. When prompted what you want to do, just uncheck Install Cydia since you already have it installed. Let redsn0w do its thing and you should be untethered when it completes.

Jailbreak your device

If you’re not jailbroken at all, perform the following steps –

First Launch redsn0w

This version and other newer versions of redsn0w should automatically detect what version of iOS you are running. No need to manually browse to a firmware file this time. Just click Jailbreak and follow the prompts.

Next redsn0w will prompt you to only continue when your device is powered off. If it isn’t already, power your device off while it’s connected to the computer.

Next you will be guided through putting your device into DFU mode. Follow the steps and redsn0w will take care of the rest.

After redsn0w finishes doing it’s thing, you’re done!

Common issues and how to solve them

Stuck on Apple logo or in recovery mode

Some users seem to be experiencing this issue. Performing a clean restore in iTunes and then attempting to jailbreak after a clean install should alleviate this issue.

redsn0w fails

First attempt to select a custom IPSW under Extras in redsn0w and navigate to the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW to see if this fixes the issue. If it still fails, try a clean restore in iTunes and then attempt to jailbreak again.

If you’re running into other issues, make sure to check out our jailbreak and unlock forums for further help troubleshooting common and not so common jailbreak issues.

Thanks to pod2g and all his hard work, an untethered jailbreak is now available for the original iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and older models. Both redsn0w and Corona have been updated to support the new, untethered jailbreak.

A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam. We’ve put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).

Unfortunately, Apple A5 chipset-powered devices, namely iPhone 4S and iPad 2, are still in jailbreak limbo.

Because those devices cannot use geohot’s limera1n exploit to inject the untether, they require exploits above and beyond those used for this release. Keep following pod2g on twitter or his blog for any progress reports!

pod2g has handed over his A4 untethered jailbreak to the Chronic Dev Team in order to concentrate on Apple A5 chipset devices, namely the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. The Chronic Dev Team will test and finish his A4 untether for release as soon as possible.

I need to focus on A5 and hope I can find a path quick, and I have the feeling that chronic-dev could help me. I gave all the details to the chronic dev team so that they can finish, test, integrate and release the A4 jb ASAP. I’ll put all my energy from now on on the A5

This comes after accomplishing an untethered jailbreak for all A4 devices as well as overcoming a cache issue for A5 devices.

There are tons of users on both Apple A4 chipset and A5 chipset devices. While many people are waiting for an A5 jailbreak, A4 users have been waiting even longer. It also makes sense that no jailbreak developer wants to burn an exploit that Apple may patch in iOS 5.1. I see this as being a good scenario and the best option for both A4 and A5 users if it results in jailbreak tools for both even faster.

redsn0w has been updated to version 0.9.9b9d in order to fix a few bugs. This update comes right after an update to ultrasn0w and after adding support to redsn0w for iOS 5.0.1.

iPhone3GS owners in our comments section below noticed a problem with the untethered jailbreak available for the old-bootrom 3GS. We’ve corrected that problem in 0.9.9b9d. If you have an old-bootrom 3GS and have already used last night’s redsn0w on it, you can re-run it again without losing anything. Just use this new version, go to Extras->IPSW and manually select the 5.0.1 IPSW, then go back and Jailbreak it again (but you can uncheck Cydia because it’s already installed).

Keep in mind this jailbreak is still tethered unless you have an iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom. You can grab the updated version via the links below then check out our guide on how to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 via redsn0w.
pod2g has shown off an iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak running on an iPhone 4.

Here is a new video demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4. This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods. The jailbreak is near ready for prime time (excluding 4S and iPad 2).

Hopefully iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners won’t have too long to wait, however, as he previously said he’d overcome the cache issues on A5 devices –

Either way, looks like they’re finally nearing the end zone in the land of untethered. Don’t forget to support jailbreak devs and donate when you can if you find their tools useful.

An untethered jailbreak for A5 devices (iPhone 4S and iPad 2) has finally been achieved according to pod2g’s most recent blog entry. He updated his blog yesterday stating he had hit a stumbling block but would update us today again. He’s kept true to his word and let us know today that he’s overcome the cache issue and achieved an untether.

OK, figured it out, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. I sorted it out by doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process.

Saurik helped with launchd boot process so they’re one step closer to a stable jailbreak. Props to pod2g and saurik for all their hard work. I can’t wait to jailbreak my iPhone 4S as soon as a tool is updated and released. Anyone else jumping for joy at this news? I know I am! Check the source link for all the details.

pod2g has updated his blog with the current status of his iPhone 4S jailbreak he’s been working on. The good news is he seems to be working extremely hard on this one. The bad news is he seems to have hit a bit of a snag when it comes to the untethered part.

The untether fails right now because I’m having processor cache issues.

I’m close, but I can’t figure out what happens. It certainly has something to do with the Cortex-A9 cache management.

I could sort it out quick, it’s a matter of chance.

I’ll report you my progress tomorrow.

Considering his quick progress when it came to an untether for all A4 devices, I’m hoping tomorrow will bring with it more good news. Seeing all these fancy new jailbreak apps is just torture for us iPhone 4S users who are left in the dust as of now.

Famous Chronic Dev-Team member, pod2g, has confirmed that his untethered jailbreak is working on pretty much all devices with an Apple A4 system-on-a-chip running iOS 5.0.1. On top of A4 devices, he’s also got an untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.3 on the AppleTV 2 working.

Just to be clear, these are the devices:

iPad (original)

iPhone 3GS

iPod Touch 4G, 3G

iPhone 4

Just like many of you, I’m hoping the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are added to this list sooner rather than later. There’s been no mention yet of any exploit supporting A5 devices nor a release date for a jailbreak tool for A4 devices. We will update as soon as we hear something.

pod2g has posted a video showing off an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. When and if it will be made public has yet to be said.

hello. No it does not rely on [Charlie Miller's code signing vulnerability]. Next step do the same on iOS 5.0.1. Should be quick.

According to later a tweet sent out by pod2g, it looks as if it will work on iOS 5.0.1 which is great news for all the folks that already updated.

Tons of questions from my nice followers. Too early to answer. Will work on iOS 5.0.1, will try iPad 2 and 4S after others are ready.

I’m secretly (ok, not so secretly) crossing my fingers that an untethered solution will follow (heck, I’ll take tethered at this point) for the iPhone 4S.

An untethered jailbreak is one that doesn’t require an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad be plugged via USB dock cable to properly reboot, and typically seems harder and takes longer to achieve than tethered jailbreaks. While tethered gets the job done, an untethered solution is always preferred.

Chronic Dev Team member @pod2g let the jailbreak community know that he’s discovered a new bug in iOS 5 that may allow for an untethered jailbreak in the future.

Hey jailbreaking friends, I’ve found a bug that can untether iOS 5. Don’t expect a release soon, but I’m gonna work hard in it.

Currently, the only way to jailbreak iOS 5 is by tethering your iPhone to your PC or Mac and re-jailbreaking with RedSn0w each time a reboot is needed, which can cause a lot headaches for users on-the-go.

Details are slim, and we still aren’t sure if this will cover the full gamut of iOS devices including the new iPhone 4S. In any case, we’re looking forward to an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 but it appears we’ll have to wait a bit longer. In the meantime you can check out the TiPb Jailbreak guide or head over to our Jailbreak and Unlock forums!

If you’re a jailbreaker you’re probably wondering what the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 GM mean for you. And if you plan on upgrading, will you be able to jailbreak? As with any new software or hardware release, we can’t be too sure of what this means for jailbreak but here is what we do know:

The iOS 5 GM can be jailbroken via Redsn0w 0.9.9b3a, but it will be tethered (unless you have an older boot rom)

We will most likely have to wait for a tool to be updated to support new hardware

If you jailbreak, you’ll miss out on the OTA updates that come with iOS 5

A jailbreak for the new hardware will most likely be tethered at first just like recent beta jailbreaks for iOS 5

After iOS 4 dropped we saw an untethered jailbreak but we waited quite a while for another untethered solution on iPhone 4 under iOS 4.2.1. As with any new software and hardware, we’ll really have to wait for the jailbreak community to get their hands on the new stuff before we know anything for sure.

What I can say is if you rely on an unlock, you’ll probably want to wait to upgrade until a software unlock is released. You can always turn to options like Gevey if those tools are updated. But those are somewhat illegal and, ya know, frowned upon.

Stefan Esser, better known as I0n1c has put together a rather detailed presentation on the latest iOS jailbreak techniques. The presentation was made recently at Black Hat 2011 in Las Vegas. The presentation consists of 97 slides in total covering subjects like Kernel Debugging, Kernel Exploitation and Kernelpatches from jailbreaks.

The iPhone user land is locked down very tightly by kernel level protections. Therefore any sophisticated attack has to include a kernel exploit in order to completely compromise the device. Because of this our previous session titled “Targeting the iOS Kernel” already discussed how to reverse the iOS kernel in order to find kernel security vulnerabilities. Exploitation of iOS kernel vulnerabilities has not been discussed yet.

To be honest, this is way over my head but if you do have an interest in this area and want to take a look at the presentation in its entirety, you can download it here.

Sn0wBreeze for Windows users has now officially been updated to support iOS 5 beta 6 users. We reported the old version of Sn0wBreeze already working for some users, yet others had complications. But the tool has now been updated to officially support beta 6.

Yes the jailbreak is still tethered (with the exception of old bootrom iPhone 3GS users). This version of Sn0wBreeze not only lets you jailbreak iOS 5 beta 6, it will also allow you to skip the UDID check. This basically means you can install the beta without having a developer’s license. (We don’t condone this but to each their own.) Sn0wBreeze will also preserve your baseband like before and allow “hacktivation”. The following devices are supported –

Original iPad

iPhone 3GS (if you had the older bootrom it will also be untethered)

iPhone 4 (GSM)

iPhone 4 (CDMA)

iPod Touch 3G

iPod Touch 4

Keep in mind that not only is iOS 5 still in beta but that these jailbreaks are also beta. So if you’re not afraid of some bugs and are already aware of the risks involved, simply hit the link below to download the updated version of Sn0wBreeze.

We’re getting a lot of questions from Jailbreakers and would-be Jailbreakers both on iOS 4.x and iOS 5 so we figured it was time to once again take a look

We’re getting a lot of questions from Jailbreakers and would-be Jailbreakers both on iOS 4.x and iOS 5 so we figured it was time to once again take a look at the state of iPhone, iPod touch and iPad Jailbreak. Here it is:

If you still have an untethered Jailbreak on iOS 4.3.3 or below and want to stay untethered, don’t upgrade just yet.

If you’ve already updated and you currently have a tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.5, you’ll probably have to stay tethered until the release version of iOS 5 drops this October.

Why not? Because if they release an untethered Jailbreak based on an exploit in iOS 5 beta, Apple could easily patch it in the next beta and it’s back to square one.

I’m currently on iOS 5 beta and personally can’t wait to have my jailbreak back. iOS 5 is a major improvement but I still miss apps like Mail Enhancer and SBSettings. I’d much rather wait and have an untethered jailbreak for the iOS 5 final release than a quick fix now that Apple kills off during the beta.

While the hoopla surrounding the recently released iOS 4.3.4 (and iOS 4.2.9) focused on it killing the PDF exploit that allowed JailbreakMe.com to function — and could potentially allow bad guys to attack the iPhone and iPad as well — it looks like Apple also patched an exploit that had been used to achieve untethered Jailbreakers since iOS 4.1. According to @i0n1c:

For those that did not get it: iOS 4.3.4 does not only fix jbme3 as announced, but also silently kills the ndrv_setspec() integer overflow.

In addition to that iOS 4.3.4 also adds code to dyld to detect attacks with binaries using “incomplete code signing”.

“Incomplete codesigning attacks” were used for all untether exploits from at least iOS 4.1.0

Wonder if {Apple] only tried to stop my xploit from modifying LCs at runtime with the new check, or if they knew it would stop [incomplete codesigning] attacks.

That last tweet revives the debate about wether or not Apple is simply concerned about iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch security, or if they’re specifically targeting Jailbreak exploits to close down. Some, like JailbreakMe.com, are such a risk Apple closes them as soon as possible. Others, like ndrv_setspec() survived for months and several IOS updates.

Either way, we once again thank the Jailbreak developers for their time and tenacity in always looking for new exploits and new ways to Jailbreak.

[@i0n1c, thanks @sethclifford]

The commits go back almost a year, which is certainly a long time. Whether or not this signifies any progress on the long-anticipated iPad 2 Jailbreak is unknown. Jailbreakme.com was last active during the early days of iOS 4, when a PDF exploit allowed an easy, over-the-web Jailbreak unseen since the early days of iOS 1. The site was recently updated with another cryptic image, so hopefully something is afoot…

Prominent iPhone hacker i0n1c revealed in a tweet yesterday that the untethered jailbreak he created has been fixed in iOS 5.

R.I.P. – I just heard Apple killed the ndrv_setspec() integeroverflow and his friends in iOS 5.0b1 – if this is true the untether is dead

It was discovered yesterday that the tethered jailbreak in limera1n worked perfectly in iOS 5 with Cydia running smoothly, but for those hoping the untether from i0n1c would work, it looks like those dreams have been put to rest.

This doesn’t mean another untethered jailbreak won’t be discovered, although the jailbreak community most likely wouldn’t release it until the iPhone 5 is available to prevent Apple from finding the exploit and patching it at the hardware level.

Would you be open to using a tethered jailbreak with iOS 5 or would you stick with iOS 4 until an untethered jailbreak is available?

Wondering how to turn your iPhone 4 LED flash into a flashlight? Click Home. Launch camera. Switch to video. Turn on the flash… and by then you’ve knocked your foot or your head or lost sight of whatever it is you were looking for. Luckily, you can get your flashlight on much faster with SpringFlash, an awesome tweak from Cydia. SpringFlash allows you to use the activator app, which is installed when you jailbreak your device, to get instant access to your iPhone 4′s LED light. Setup is easy, hit the jump to find out how.

Setup

Launch Cydia from your jailbroken iPhone 4

Search SpringFlash

Download the tweak

Note: there will be no app icon with this tweak, nor will there be an option in the settings app on your phone.

Activation

Once the app is installed:

Launch Settings

Go to Activator

Choose how you would like to have your iPhone 4′s LED activated.

That’s it. No re-spring required!

As you can see from the tweet above, the Dev Team has updated their popular PwnageTool to support an untethered jailbreak under iOS 4.3.2. You now have the option of using either PwnageTool or redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.3.2.

We have experienced some issues with jailbreaking iOS 4.3.2. Some users say they have had issues as well while others are perfectly fine. I’m personally staying on 4.2.1 for now since I have no compelling reason to upgrade.

The updated version of PwnageTool is available at the link below. It supports the following devices -

iPhone 3GS

iPhone 4 (GSM)

iPod touch 3G

iPod touch 4G

iPad First generation

So iPad 2 users and Verizon iPhone users need not apply. And a final note to unlockers – you should only ever use a custom IPSW when upgrading firmware. While ultrasn0w will unlock your iPhone running iOS 4.3.2, that only applies if you are running an older baseband. So never restore to a stock firmware in iTunes because that will not preserve your baseband! Check out more details and grab your download from the link below!

redsn0w 0.9.6rc13 is here and it brings with it the promise of an untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2 devices including iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3 and 4, and iPad 1. iPhone 4 will be coming as soon as a fix is made, and iPad 2 is still waiting on a new exploit (yes, we’re sad too.) According to the Dev-Team:

Only a few weeks after the 4.3.1 untether created by @i0n1c was released, Apple pushed out firmware 4.3.2. Thankfully, it appears Apple didn’t have a chance to fix the hole used by @i0n1c’s untether, so he ported his code over to 4.3.2’s kernel. Today’s redsn0w has been updated to include it.

Check out our complete iOS 4.3.2 untethered Jailbreak guide (updated from our 4.3.1 since the process is essentially unchanged) and if you need any help jump on into our Jailbreak Forum.

Are you apart of #teamjailbreak? Are you updating to 4.3.2 and giving the new redsn0w a try? Let us know how it works for you!

UPDATED: iPhone 4 (AT&T/GSM) is good to go!

redsn0w rc14 includes the fixed i4 untether from @i0n1c. You can re-run redsn0w rc14 right over the tethered rc13b to transform the i4 JB into an untethered one.

i0n1c has just confirmed via his Twitter account that the exploit behind the current untethered jailbreak is still working and alive on iOS 4.3.2. Apple has not patched it. He is currently running the jailbreak on his original iPad. Odds are that this will work for all devices minus the iPad 2.

I would still hold off on upgrading until a jailbreak tool has been updated if you can.
iPad 2 jailbreak may be coming sooner than a lot of folks thought thanks to p0sixninja. In a recent tweet, he claims they are working on a jailbreak for the new iPad 2. As we all remember, with the release of the 4.3.1 jailbreak, the iPad 2 was left out of the fun, due to the difference in the bootrom.

p0sixninja appears to be confirming that the jailbreak does exist –

Since 4.3.1 is already exploited by the legendary @i0n1c, we’re working on finishing iPad2 jailbreak now.

How many of you out there have been eagerly awaiting a jailbreak for your iPad 2?

    How’s your iOS 4.3 Jailbreak?survey software

Our newest jailbreak ninja, Cody, recently let you know how to untethered jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 via redsn0w but since then, how has it been? I personally haven’t had time to upgrade to iOS 4.3.1 and re-jailbreak. Cody however has voiced that he has had a lot more springboard crashes than he did under the previous iOS 4.2.1 greenpois0n jailbreak.

Most jailbreakers are aware that not all apps are compatible with a new jailbreak, so outside of those causing issues, are any of you experiencing issues? Cody and a couple readers have wrote in to let me know that they’ve experienced some safe mode crashes and reboots under iOS 4.3.1.

If you have issues, let us know in the the poll and/or in the comments as well as checking out our TiPb jailbreak forums to see what issues other members are experiencing and if they’ve found any ways around them.

Complete guide to Jailbreaking iPhone, iPod touch, and original iPad running iOS 4.3.2 with redsn0w

iOS 4.3.2 untethered jailbreak for iPhone, iPod touch, and original iPad is now live… and it’s pretty much the same as the iOS 4.3.1 Jailbreak so we’re updating this post to get you going faster! The Dev-Team has used their hax0r magic to bring us yet another gift in the form of an untethered jailbreak! This jailbreak will require you to use redsn0w, which is available for both Windows and Mac OS X.

Important: iPad 2 is still not supported and unlockers need to steer clear until ultrasn0w is updated. If you’ve got a Verizon iPhone you’ll want to check out our greenpois0n jailbreak guide for iOS 4.2.6 instead.

Hit the jump for a complete how-to!

What you need

iTunes 10.2.2 or higher

redsn0w for Windows or Mac

iOS 4.3.2

First, you will need to download redsn0w via the link above

Next, you will need to go grab the appropriate iOS firmware for your device. (If you updated via iTunes, it’ll be in your iTunes directory)

Once you have downloaded the correct firmware and redsn0w, you are now ready to jailbreak.

After you launch redsn0w, you will be asked to browse and choose the custom firmware you downloaded in the previous step.

Next you’ll choose to install Cydia and redsn0w will walk you through how to place your device in DFU mode. Just make sure you start this process with your device OFF.

Let your device do its thing and you’re done!

In our experience, we’ve noticed this jailbreak seemed a bit buggy on the original iPad.

The Dev-Team will be releasing the official tools for an untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak tonight. Both Redsn0w and PwnageTool will be available within the next 24 hours and will support all iOS devices including the iPhone 4 and latest generation iPod touch, but will not yet be compatible with the iPad 2.

Over the weekend the Dev-Team let the world know that if #sundayisfunday started trending on Twitter they’d release an untethered jailbreak shortly after. It has since been confirmed that they’re planning to release the official tools at GMT-8, which should translate for us in the US and Canada to the following times:

12AM Pacific

1AM Mountain

2AM Central

3AM Eastern

It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like we’ll finally be able to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 without needing to tether to a PC or Mac each time a reboot is required. We’re not sure when a jailbreak will be out for the iPad 2, but we’ve heard rumblings of something in the works from Comex. The Dev-Team may hold out on an iPad 2 jailbreak to make sure Apple doesn’t patch hardware vulnerabilities with the iPhone 5, but with rumors that we won’t see the iPhone 5 in June this year they may end up releasing a tool sooner rather than later.

Will you be jailbreaking after Redsn0w and PwnageTool are released tonight? Let us know in the comments!

Following up on earlier news that an untethered exploit was handed over to the Dev-Team from developer Stefan Esser, prominent Dev-Team member @MuscleNerd tweeted that the exploit is working and they’re hammering out remaining jailbreak issues at this time.

well @i0n1c’s untether is solid! Just working out overall 4.3.x JB issues and Cydia

It looks like we could see a working untethered iOS 4.3 jailbreak tool released soon based on the progress update, but remember it won’t work with the iPad 2 unless a new vulnerability is found and implemented (Apple patched the userland exploit found by Comex in 4.3.1).

Do you think we’ll see a jailbreak released for 4.3 soon? Sound off in the comments below!

Developer Stefan Essen recently demoed an iOS 4.3 untethered jailbreak exploit on video. Today on Twitter, he has stated that the exploit has been turned over to the iPhone Dev-Team. He stated when he released the demo video that he had no intention of releasing a jailbreak tool himself.

What the iPhone Dev-Team will do with the untether isn’t completely clear at this point, but we can hope that it allows for a untethered jailbreak in the near future under iOS 4.3. For all of you iPad 2 users out there, Stefan Essen has already stated that this exploit won’t do you any good.

The iPhone Dev-Team is currently beta testing the exploit. We’ll see if they decide to implement it in a tool in the near future. How many of you are waiting to upgrade and still on iOS 4.2.1?

You won’t need any SHSH blobs saved. redsn0w beta required you to have 4.2b3 blobs saved (and it was pretty unstable). Hopefully greenpois0n is going to be a much smoother experience for you guys. Hit the jump for a walkthrough on how to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with greenpois0n and for the answers to some commonly asked questions.

What devices will greenpois0n RC5 jailbreak?

iPhone 4/3GS

iPad

iPod Touch 2G/3G/4G

AppleTV second generation

You’ll need to be running iOS 4.2.1 in order for this version of greenpois0n to work (4.1.1 for AppleTV second generation users).

Should I do a full stock restore first?

In short, most likely. If you’re already stock and haven’t been jailbroken, you’re fine. Still back up your phone first in case anything goes wrong.

If you are currently jailbroken on 4.1, yes. Do a full stock restore to 4.2.1 and restore as a new iPhone. After jailbreaking, I still don’t recommend restoring from a backup. Old jailbreak pieces can come with your backup and cause issues for you. Just my personal recommendation.

If you are currently tethered on 4.2.1 via redsn0w, you should be able to just run greepois0n right over your current jailbreak to untether. Some of the devs are saying if you have issues installing Cydia via greenpois0n after running it, simply run redsn0w again and let it re-install Cydia. Basically, as long as you aren’t running a Monte version jailbreak on 4.2.1, you should be able to run greenpois0n to untether.

Will this jailbreak iOS 4.3 beta?

No. You’ll have to wait a bit longer on a tested jailbreak for 4.3.

Jailbreaking iOS 4.2.1 via Greenpois0n

Download greenpois0n onto your Mac. (Some users have been reporting the servers being down. If you can’t get it to download right away, just be patient. Their servers are probably just lagging from all the traffic. There are a few mirrors out there so be sure to check the comments for the latest updates on those.

Plug your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or AppleTV in via USB (make sure the power is off) and follow the on-screen instructions to enter DFU mode.

Greenpois0n will recognize when your phone is properly in DFU mode and start to do its thing. After it’s done, you’ll see a Loader icon on your homescreen. Tap it and install Cydia. (Note: This only differs for AppleTV jailbreakers. You’ll be done but need to continue accessing and installing apps via Terminal and SSH.)

You’re done! Restore all your stuff (if you choose to or were stock before) and enjoy being jailbroken!

Note: Some users in the comments have been reporting sometimes the initializing error is a result of not holding the home button long enough when entering DFU mode. Even when the text is not greyed out anymore, continue holding the home button if you’re getting the Initializing error even after trying Greenpois0n RC5 version 2.

If you guys have already used this version of greenpois0n, let us know how it’s going in the comments! Have other questions? Check our our Jailbreak Starters Guide and jailbreak forums!

The Chronic Dev Team finally released Greenpois0n RC5 tonight which will jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 fully untethered. The only other jailbreak for 4.2.1 was previously limited to a beta version of Redsn0w, which had a few issues and wasn’t highly recommended for every-day users.

Many iPhone users (including myself) have been waiting a long time for this day to come. We haven’t been able to test it out yet, but so far there haven’t been any reports of issues or problems with the jailbreak. Right now only a Mac version is available but we’re expecting a Windows and Linux version to be available soon. We’re assuming this covers the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 as well as the iPad and iPod Touch, but we haven’t confirmed that yet.

Let us know if you’re able to try it out and report back any issues you find in the comments below! And if you need any extra help head on over to our Jailbreak Forum.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5qNray7FHU < I really don’t know what’s funny about this. You do ?

The video shows an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.1 Jailbroken in all its untethered glory. Apparently this might be coming soon via a greenpois0n update though whether or not they’ll use it now or save it for when Apple releases iOS 4.3 is unknown. (If they use it now, Apple could patch it in iOS 4.3 and they’ll have to come up with yet another Jailbreak).

What do you say, you want iOS 4.2.1 untethered now, now, now or would you prefer them to play it safe so you can quickly untether iOS 4.3 in February or March? Video after the break!

I’ve been receiving a lot of questions about the state of current jailbreaks, especially when it comes to the just released iOS 4.3 beta and the Verizon iPhone (demo models ran iOS 4.2.5). The jailbreak community is working on a jailbreak but they have stated it will not come out as long as iOS 4.3 is in beta. There’s a good reason for this. Most jailbreakers already realize it’s a cat and mouse game with Apple.

If one of the dev teams has an exploit, they don’t want to burn it. If they release it now, Apple can patch it before the final release and it’s of use to no one. Unlocker @MuscleNerd isn’t planning on releasing an unlock until iOS 4.3 is official, and for good reason. Here’s what he has to say -

Official iPhone unlock statement: no unlock will be released until after 4.2.5 or official 4.3 (whichever is last) is out

I can’t imagine a general jailbreak tool being any different. No point burning exploits for no good reason. So on that front, just be patient. And as always, don’t upgrade right away if you plan on jailbreaking.

In the mean time, you can make sure you save your SHSH blobs if you’re already jailbroken. You can also read through our jailbreak starter’s guide if you’re curious but new to the jailbreak scene.

Click through for a current list of firmwares and what your jailbreak options are under each firmware. We’ve also got some links handy after the break to walkthroughs explaining each method.

iOS 4.1 and below – greenpois0n, limera1n, Pwnagetool

iOS 4.2 and above – redsn0w

Please note that redsn0w is currently a tethered jailbreak. There is a redsn0w beta out that allows for an untethered jailbreak but it’s still got issues. I personally recommend staying on 4.1 until an easier (less buggy) solution is available if you can.

Keep in mind you always need to check your device type against each of these methods to make sure it’s compatible. Click through to the links for more detailed descriptions of each and what they can offer you. If you still have questions, make sure to check out the TiPb jailbreak forums.

Seas0nPass has just been released for jailbroken AppleTV users. Up until now, there hasn’t been easy to use jailbreak tools for the AppleTV. Hopefully Seas0nPass can change all that.

Seas0nPass offers some of the same basic functionality utilities like PwnageTool already offers iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users. It will currently jailbreak the most current version of AppleTV iOS (4.2.1). Seas0nPass for AppleTV also offers an easier tethered boot option as well as an ability to create and restore from custom firmwares (IPSW) files. This will be nice for users on newer firmwares that may not offer an untethered option yet.

Currently Seas0nPass is only available for Mac users running Mac OS 10.6 or later but a Windows version should be coming soon.

Seas0nPass is available for free and the code is open source and available on Github now. If you give it a try, let us know how it works for you!

The iOS 4.2.1 untethered Jailbreak via redsn0w beta we posted about the other day is now good to go for testers. Again, this is not an untethered Jailbreak release it’s just a beta that’s buggy but, with testers’ help and feedback, should get better and quick. Quoth the Dev Team:

This is a beta tester program. It’s not a general release! Things can go very wrong, so please don’t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven’t backed up!

For the same reason, please don’t participate if you rely on the ultrasn0w carrier unlock. Wait for the final version!

Until we fix some sandbox issues with bluetooth, the bluetooth functionality is disabled.

This very first beta1 is limited to iPhone4, iPad, and iPod touch 4G.

Cydia must have your 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved on file. (As we approach a general release, we’ll provide a way to let you use locally saved hashes too).

You must already have the usbmuxd software installed and running on your Mac (this requirement will eventually go away too). The correct invocation of the relay is just as that page says: “./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222”. If the relay isn’t installed or running correctly by the time the redsn0w ramdisk has started, you’ll need to restore to stock FW again to try it again. Please test it beforehand to save yourself some time!

Please leave all feedback in the comments below (we really need your feedback to help develop it into a stable release!)

If the above scares or confuses you, stay away. If it excites and entices you, go grab the redsn0w beta test release via the link below, and let us know how it works for you!

Update: Please use extreme caution when using betas of anything. This is no exception. It seems the beta of redsn0w is causing a lot of users some serious grief. Us here at TiPb recommend staying on iOS 4.1 if you can or sticking with the tethered version for now. Here’s a list of issues many users have been experiencing with the beta

We’re troubleshooting in the Jailbreak Forum, come join us!

Bluetooth is disabled

iPod player not working on iPhone 4 and iPad

Application switcher causing the springboard to crash

YouTube is not working for many

Videos in your camera roll may not play at all

AirPlay not compatible

Some app store apps are crashing or not working at all

The above issues are pretty serious and exactly why the Dev Team has advised that general users stay away from this beta. It’s for testers, not the general public. So unless you are using it for testing purposes, it’s best to stay away. If you expect a fully functional jailbreak with no issues, this isn’t it.

The SHAtter exploit found by pod2g appears to have been leaked. Who leaked it and for what reason is still unclear. What is clear is that Apple will certainly find a way to patch the hardware if it did in fact leak. When Limera1n was released, it kept the SHAtter bootrom exploit safe for future jailbreaks as it would require a complete hardware revision to be done by Apple.

SHAtter basically used a hardware exploit in the A4 series of devices (iPhone 4, iPad, AppleTV 2nd generation, and iPod Touch 4G). You can bet Apple will make a hardware revision to patch SHAtter. It seems there is some drama between some members of the jailbreak community over who actually “leaked” the SHAtter exploit.

@P0isixninja of the Chronic Dev Team is pointing a blame finger to @Musclenerd. As Musclenerd concentrates on unlocks, it seems unreasonable to think he’d leak an exploit he would need in order to create an unlock. Click through for a response to the drama from @comex, who claims if it doesn’t stop, he’ll just e-mail the exploit directly to Apple. Not good news for the jailbreak community.

The part of Comex’s tweet that got me was where he said (the real) SHAtter. Digging further into Twitter shows that maybe a fake exploit was leaked on purpose. We’ll update when we know more.

What are you guys’ thoughts? It’s been a crazy evening for jailbreakers. First Comex stated the Christmas untethered deadline would be missed, and now a leaked exploit. Lend us your thoughts in the comments!

About an hour ago, Comex fired out the tweet you see above, saying he might miss his self-imposed deadline for an untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak for iPhone or iPod touch by Christmas. For those of you not familiar with the current “state of the jailbreak”, a lot of users (specifically iPhone 4 and newer basebands) are either stuck on 4.2.1 with a tethered jailbreak or are waiting to upgrade from 4.1 until there’s an untethered option. For most newer models, firmwares, and basebands, redsn0w is the only option and you’ll be tethered (which you may or may not consider a hassle). Supposedly, a newer version will allow an easy untether process via redsn0w. Looks like we could be waiting a bit longer than expected, unless another 4.2.1 untethered solution comes along sooner.

It’s still unclear whether an untethered version is still going to require saved SHSH blobs. As Apple isn’t signing 4.1 anymore, we’ll hope for those users on stock 4.2.1 you won’t need them.

If you were waiting patiently for an untethered solution before Christmas, you may be out of luck. According to Comex, that deadline may not be achievable. Are any of you anxiously awaiting an untethered Christmas present? Are you currently on 4.2.1 stock/tethered or are you still running 4.1? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts!

MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team has confirmed via Twitter that he has managed to get an untethered jailbreak working for iOS 4.2.1 devices. Currently the only jailbreak available for iOS 4.2.1 involves tethering your device to a Mac or PC in the event that your device needs a reboot. This could be problematic if you are out and are away from your notebook or desktop machine.

ipt4g 4.2.1 untethered JB w/4.2b3 kernel … Wastes no exploits, but upcoming @comex JB maybe better

In order to use this method, you must have had your SHSH blobs saved with Cydia or TinyUmbrella, as the exploit uses iOS 4.2 beta 3. No news on the release date of this yet, or Comex’s upcoming jailbreak, but we will let you know as soon as we find out.

The jailbreak will work with all iOS devices, the question is, do you want your 4.2.1 jailbreak right… or simply right now? Video after the break.

Twitter lit up this morning with signs that an iPhone 4 jailbreak and unlock is definitely on it’s way. On the other side of things, original iPhone Jailbreaker, GeoHot (George Hotz) has apparently deleted his Twitter account and made his blog private. What’s going on? Keep reading.

I noticed this morning @planetbeing had posted a tweet saying a soft unlock had been achieved. He’s followed up by posting pics of an iPhone 4 running Cydia and a pic showing the phone running on Canadian carrier, Bell. This is definitely good news for all you iPhone 4 owners itching for your jailbreak and/or unlock. For end users, a jailbreak may still be a month or two off, but for developers and hackers, this is great news and major progress. @Comex had reported a userland jailbreak not that long ago. Using that, himself and @planetbeing are making great progress.

Now on to GeoHot. He posted up an article talking about his jailbreak for iPhone 4 and what he had posted over the weekend. I showed a little skepticism about whether or not it was real. In the past, geohot had always given us a little bit more “actual” proof than what he gave this time. Apparently in his last blog, he commented that the screen shot actually wasn’t real.

“Sorry, this post was probably a bad idea. Next time I won’t say anything. I miss when this blog was actually about technical things(I’ve been reacting too much to the feedback, which led it to the place it’s in now). I didn’t fully realize most of the current scene don’t care unless they are getting something. Now I do. It’s late tonight, I’ll think about what to do about this in the morning.

The real reason behind no release isn’t technical. It’s just that it will never stop, after blackra1n, people demand unlock, after blacksn0w, people demand untethered. I miss the days when jailbreaking and unlocking were difficult, it attracted a much higher caliber crowd.

Also, to the haters, the picture is quite obviously fake ”

Geohot got a lot of heat on his own blog and all over the Twitter-verse for his post over the weekend. Many people calling foul and saying his ego had gotten way too large for his own good. I somewhat see his point about it never ending. He’s never charged for his work so people waiting with their hand out can probably get a little irritating at times. Maybe he didn’t handle it in the best manner, but he’s made up his mind (for now anyways).

So to @planetbeing and @comex, congrats and thanks for all your hard work, we’re all just as excited as you are! And to geohot, maybe we’ll see you around again soon?

A word of warning for iPad users:

On iPad, all this is still sort of beta. Some packages in Cydia, not designed for iPad, might screw up your system and require you to restore. Be careful. (And no, Cydia’s appearance is not final.)

Also, not an unlock solution. This is a jailbreak.

As always, if you don’t know what any of these means, stay away.

Today is a good day to be a iPod touch 2G owner. Particularly if you have been waiting for an untethered jailbreak method to appear. The Dev Team put up a post late last night on their blog:

The iPod Touch 2G is now another member of the “pwned for life” family. It has a fatal flaw in its bootrom that means you will always be able to pwn these devices no matter what firmware updates come along. This is the full, untethered jailbreak, something that iPod Touch 2G users have not had before today.

For more information about this iPod touch 2G jailbreak and to download the software you’ll need, visit here. If any of you are feeling adventurous, be sure to let us know how it goes!
