According to a find by Mark Gurman over at 9to5Mac, Apple will refresh the stock iPad wallpapers when it eventually gets round to releasing iOS 5.1 to the public. iOS 5.1 is currently in its second beta phase and as there is no sign of a Gold Master release we have no idea when it will become available to all.

The latest iOS 5.1 beta 2 reveals four new wallpapers for the iPad. These are pictures of water lapping a sandy beach, long dew laden grass, water rings and a calm ocean view. The new wallpapers are only included in the iPad version of iOS 5.1 beta 2.

Many are speculating that that these wallpapers could be for the iPad 3; which is set to be released early next year. Of course the resolution of the new wallpaper is currently 1024 x 768 and not the Retina size we are expecting with the next generation iPad.

A lot of people are curious how to theme their iPhone's -- not just change the wallpaper but customize the whole look of the interface, including icons, menu bars, fonts, and more. Enter Winterboard, a free Jailbreak app you can download for free via Cydia.

Winterboard is a necessary utility to install themes and most customizations. Many veteran jailbreakers will remember the days of Summerboard as well. Winterboard took its place a few years back and improved upon several things. When you install a theme, all the components will show up in Winterboard.

Depending upon how a theme developer decided to bundle their theme, you may have only one package in Winterboard, or you may have several. I personally prefer when developers separate theme elements. Since Winterboard works as a hierarchy, I can select a theme and if I don't like the sounds, I can download a sound pack I "do" like and apply that in Winterboard. The key is to move it above the main theme so it overrides the sounds you don't want.

I highly suggest jailbreakers become familiar and comfortable with Winterboard. If you do, there is no limit to what you can do to your phone and you'll be able to tweak and customize even the littlest details of your springboard.

Thanks to a new tweak available in the Cydia store called Parallax, you can now enable scrolling/panoramic wallpapers on your jailbroken iPhone.

If you are unaware of what panoramic wallpapers are, they are simply pictures that will scroll as you change pages on your springboard. This is a great feature if you have a wide shot of a family or group or for amazing nature photos.

Unfortunately iPhone 3G/iPod touch G2 (2008) owners are warned to not install this tweak as the developer has said it is fairly memory intensive and could cause those devices to run slower. If you have an iPhone 3GS or an iPhone 4 you can hit up the Cydia store and download Parallax for $1.49.

The UI wizards at Gx5 have been a favorite of mine since they saved my old Treo 680 from the Garnet-uglies back in the day. So, when sibling-site leader, TreoCentral's own Jennifer was kind enough to forward us news from Gx5 that they had whipped up some iPhone (and iPod touch) optimized Obama wallpapers just in time for the Inauguration, we figured we'd pass it on to you, our readers, as well.

(For those new to the iPhone and unsure how to change wallpaper, don't worry, we've got you covered!)

Welcome to iPhone 101, TiPb's single point of success for new iPhone users, and for veterans who know new users and need a quick and helpful place to point them. This time we're going to take a look at how to personalize your iPhone with a different -- even custom -- wallpaper of your own choosing, including your own photos and artwork.

We'll show you how, after the break.

Wallpaper Settings

Begin from your iPhone's home screen. If you're not on the home screen, just press the big button on the bottom of your iPhone, then tap the Settings icon (default location is on the first Home screen, right hand side in the middle). At the bottom of the Settings screen will be the Wallpaper option.

Tap on Wallpaper and a set of galleries will slide across into view.

The topmost gallery is chock full of Apple provided wallpapers, focused on organic imagery including flowers, insects, rocks, trees, etc., as well as famous works of art, and a few patterns. (See the screenshot at the top of this how-to)

Below the default gallery is a list topped off by your Camera Roll (any pictures you've taken with your iPhone camera), and Photo Library, which includes every other picture currently stored on your iPhone (synced from your PC or Mac via iTunes).

Lastly are all the individual photo galleries, if any, listed by name. This can be a quicker way to find a specific photo in your library, provided you remember in which gallery you've filed it.

Choosing Your Wallpaper

To pick your wallpaper, starting by choosing one of the photo galleries outlined above. This will bring up a series of thumbnails containing all the images in the chosen gallery. If there are too many thumbnails to fit on a single screen, you can swipe up or down to navigate through them.

When you find the photo or image you want, tap on it. A full screen preview will slide up.

From this screen, you can scale the image by touching two fingers to the screen and pinching them together (to shrink it) or spreading them apart (to grow it).

If the image is larger than the iPhone's display (320 pixels wide by 480 pixels high in portrait mode), or you've zoomed in on it, you can also touch one finger to the screen and move it around to slide the image into exactly the right position (for example, to center a face in a photograph).

To return the image to it's original size and re-center it, just double tap the screen.

Setting Your Wallpaper

When you've got the image just the way you want it, tap the Set Wallpaper button on the bottom right and the next time you wake your iPhone, your new wallpaper will leap up to greet you.

Quick Tip: Setting Your Wallpaper From the Photo App

We've shown you before how to email a picture from within the Photo viewer. The same process can be used to quickly set any picture you're currently looking at as the default wallpaper, simply select the Use As Wallpaper option instead.

Now that you know how to change your wallpaper, maybe you're looking for some images to try out? I don't like to post iPhone wallpaper sites to the front page unless they're really good; I usually put them in the rejected story links thread in the forum. And the one I'm about to link to is not good. The UI is designed for the iPhone, but you can't actually download anything to the iPhone, so you have to download the wallpaper in a UI that's incredibly constrained on your desktop web browser, leading me to believe that the site creator hasn't actually used an iPhone. Supporting this theory is the fact that the site is hosted in Japan. And the name is a hilarious Engrish mangle: iPShake. Yes, I-P-Shake. But hey, it has horoscopes. You can get it all here.
