George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones returns to HBO tonight, kicking off season 2 in what will no doubt be sex filled, blood soaked, rip-roaring style. Winter is still coming (something those of us in Canada understand all too well -- the wall looks like our driveways in January!), politics is still being played, armies are marching, and... there be dragons.

Cases may let us mix up what our iPads look like on the outside, but to keep things fresh and fun on the inside, we need awesome iPad wallpapers for the Lock screen and Home screen. And we need them in Retina display resolution (that's 2048x2048 in this case -- needs to be rotatable). Sure, Apple provides a lot of really high quality, really beautiful looking wallpapers built right in, but for some of us, there are never enough.

Apple's also tend to focus on nature and texture, which is great (the new ones released in iOS 5 are all water-themed). But some people prefer more tech-styled, electronic wallpapers. Some prefer photos of family or friends, or favorite movies, TV shows, or musicians. Some even like their iPad wallpapers a little more naughty than nice (hey, we're not here to judge!)

If you've ripped them into iTunes already, you can use Home Sharing to stream them to your device, or use iTunes sync or Wi-Fi sync to move them over. If you bought them from Apple's iTunes Store, you can use iTunes in the Cloud to re-download them right to your device -- or iTunes Match if you've subscribed! If you're starting from scratch, you can check out holiday channels on apps like Slacker or just hit up iTunes and buy yourself some classics!

Whether your favorite holiday movie is Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, or Die Hard, curling up with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is a great way to enjoy them. If your movie collection is scattered in a bunch of different places and formats on your PC hard-drive, you can use something like Air Video to transcode them on the fly and watch them right on your device or beam them via AriPlay to an Apple TV and your big screen television. If they're all safe and sound in your iTunes library, again you have Home Sharing to stream them to your device, or iTunes sync or Wi-Fi sync to move them over. No holiday movies to call your own? Find some on Netflix or go straight to iTunes and check out their holiday collection.

Remember: we are looking for original works, not photos. It can be based on your own photo but it has to be made into a real, great looking wallpaper. Textures, abstract patterns, stripes, plaid - whatever you think will really make an iPhone or iPad background stand out. You'll need to create these though, not just find one online.

When it was subtly footnoted that iPhone 3G and iPod touch G2 wouldn't be getting iOS 4-style wallpaper, our only guess as to why was CoreAnimation performance -- Apple couldn't do their transitions over the textured background at levels that met their auteur standards.

Erica emailed Steve Jobs to find out:

Hey Steve! I just upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4 and was really looking forward to setting a background on my home screen. Guess that's not happening, but I'd like to know why.

And Steve Jobs replied:

The icon animation with backgrounds didn't perform well enough.

Jailbreak users have been theming since before there was an iPhone 3G, of course, just like they were recording video and multitasking, but Apple won't put their brand on anything they consider sub-par in the performance area.

So there you have it.

With iPhone OS 4 beta 4 Apple has brought over some of the iPad wallpapers and introduced a few new ones, all seemingly focused on livening up the home screen without being too visually distracting. Natural textures and muted patterns get an obvious focus here with stones, rocks, and textiles front and center.

And yes, you can still set backgrounds independently for the lock screen and home screen.

I prefer more of a Christmas theme because frankly Thanksgiving is rather boring, and I'm sure that, like me, you'd rather stare a colorful Christmas tree on your iPhone screen rather than a Butterball Turkey? You guys are a tough crowd to please. Last week's installment received as much welcome as Michael Moore attending a Republican convention. Some of you even criticized my gallery for being "too feminine", which left me questioning my sexuality and displaying overcompensating male machismo behavior. Friends and family began wondering why I suddenly started smoking cigars and spoke in a deep faux masculine voice. I hope you're proud of yourselves!

So, this week I bow to your requests and offer up these, well, less effeminate wallpapers. Hope you enjoy them. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go watch Nascar racing and wear my pants halfway down my ass.

First a bit of housekeeping: It has come to my attention that some of you have nary a clue how to load my lovely images onto your iPhone. Fair enough. Allow me to enlighten you. Full instructions can be found after the jump below.

From your PC or Mac, simply click on any image above. When the image appears right-click over it, then select "Save as", and download the image files directly to your desktop.

If you're on a Mac this next step couldn't be easier. Simply launch iPhoto and click on the plus sign (+) located in the lower left corner of the application window. That will create a new photo album. Give it a name like "iPhone wallpaper." Now drag the image files you previously downloaded right into that album.

Connect your iPhone.

After iTunes launches click on the iPhone icon, and select the photos tab. From here you can configure which images and albums are synced with your iPhone. Remember that album you created earlier? Well there it is. Place a check next to that album name and forever more any image you drag into that photo album will be relocated to your iPhone upon syncing.

To access the images on your iPhone, just tap the settings icons, then select the wallpaper option. And there they be. Enjoy.

I'm heading out this weekend to the biggest spectacle in classic car exhibition at the Kruse Auction park, part of the annual Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival in Auburn Indiana. It's a huge event that draws thousands of collectors and spectators, including celebrities.

I once collided into Jay Leno scoping out a cherry red 68 Mustang convertible. The klutz spilled his drink all over the car's irreplaceable upholstery, then made a quick getaway, leaving me to assume the blame and foot the bill. Damn you Leno! I got a $700 invoice for reproduction seat vinyl with your name on it!

Initially the allure was charming, but now I've grown so weary of attracting gawkers - strangers accosting me with stupid questions, asking me to demo features and functionality. I'm thinking of printing an FAQ card to hold up each time someone approaches me.
