UK network O2 now offering to lease the iPhone 4S with no upfront costs

UK mobile network O2 has started offering the iPhone 4S on a new service which it is calling O2 Lease. The O2 Lease service, according to O2, is unique in the fact that it offers customers the option to rent an iPhone 4S with no upfront costs. The deal would run for twelve months after which you can return the phone back to O2 or renew the deal for a newer iPhone model.

Sally Cowdry, marketing and consumer director for O2 UK, said: “This is the first time a UK mobile operator has adopted a leasing model. We know that customers and small businesses are used to leasing everyday items from cars and washing machines to photocopiers and office space. They understand how it works and what the advantages of a leasing are. We have simply taken this idea and applied it to the smartphone market.”

Of course, as there is no upfront cost, the monthly payments are a little higher than normal. If you decide that the lease model is right for you, expect to pay £55 ($85) a month for an iPhone 4S 16GB model or £65 ($100) a month for the 32GB model. These monthly costs include 750 minutes of talk time, unlimited text messages, 500MB of data and insurance.

Your paying almost £700 for the 16gb 4s and you don't even get to keep the better off just buying the phone for £500 where you get to keep the phone...

vodafone uk 12 months contract £51/ month. upfront fee for 16g is 139.
total £751 and you keep the PHONE!! Compare yourself

This sounds like a very good idea indeed. It is correct when they say we lease other items, but, £55.00 is alot of money, maybe they should add android phones aswell as they could offer a better deal for possibly a phone thats as good if not better than the 4s, but still a good idea for those of us who get green with envy everytime I get a phone and then they upgrade it.....

O2 UK is the wars phone company never go for it to expensive and bad covridge I am not happy at all and will move to Three mobile network.

I have to disagree. I've just moved to the unlimited data plan on 3 and the coverage in the Midlands is fab compared to O2. Had constant 3G coverage on holiday in rural Scotland too. Couldn't be happier.

I've just moved back to O2 after leaving and moving to 3. Coverage is shockingly bad and once you lose 3G the GPRS (no EDGE) doesn't even work.

Totally disagree, great coverage for me, usually always 3G and the best priced deals that I've seen. o2 tend to give their current customers better deals rather than new ones and I've heard 3 are terrible. Best network in my experience and I've had vodafone, t-mobile, o2 and orange. Don't even want to try 3 after things I've heard from quite a few different people.

thats really not a good deal. My phone bill is like 178.00 for 3 iPhones with (grandfathered) unlimited data and text. If I leased the phones like they say it would be 300 a month! And that's not including the inevitable data overages. 500mb is a joke! Buying everyone new phones every 18 months is way less than the almost $2200 price difference (extrapolated over 18 months.)

i will keep my iphone 4 until iphone 5 come. im looking forward until 2012 when iphone 5 came on the market an we could see what apple could do without steve jobs
