Verizon has just announced that the pre-orders for the Verizon iPhone -- in just the 2 hours between 3am and 5am -- resulted in the most successful first day sales in the company's history.

"This was an exciting day," said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless. "In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history. And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story. It is gratifying to know that our customers responded so enthusiastically to this exclusive offer – designed to reward them for their loyalty.

"I am proud of our employees who worked tirelessly to strengthen and scale our systems, enabling unprecedented customer orders through our website. Overall, it was a very good day," he added.

Mead also said customers will have another opportunity at being among the nation's first to own an iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network.

"Yesterday's launch set the pace for next week when we open up sales to everyone across America."

This for a phone that's already been on the market for 7 months.

Again, anyone care to guess at the sales figures for this launch? I was guessing over a million. Now I'm guessing close to 2. Were you one of them?

Verizon iPhone 4 most successful first day sales in company history

"Were you one of them?" Yes. FedEx shows delivery Monday. Finally, a Monday to look forward to :)

Once new smartphone consumers can compare the wannabe devices with the iPhone 4 side by side, the wannabes are toast. End of story.

I ordered one for me and one for my wife beginning some minutes before the announced start time (2 a.m. here). It all went very smoothly. A later status check said the order had been shipped, but without details. I've been unable to complete a status check since Thursday evening, getting "Page is not currently available" on each attempt.

Hard to believe that 100k phones in 17 hours would = biggest 1st day launch in Verizon's history after just 2 hours (i.e. significantly less than than the full 17 hour sales totals). Surely, they've had bigger launches than that? (Not that I would no, but just seems low.)

Also hard to believe any Wall Street analyst, much less one who is convinced that iPhone 5 will be 4G LTE (most tech pundits predict that won't happen until iPhone 6 in 2012).

Wasn't iPhone 4's pre-order last July about 660k phones? And that was for all customers. I doubt that there were many more phones than that for Verizon's existing-customers-only pre-order (they need to reserve a bunch for internet pre-orders on the 9th plus in-store sales on the 10th). Anyone wanna bet pre-orders sell out on the 9th too?

I'd love to see a breakdown of what devices these initial Verizon switchers are switching from. Feature phones? Blackberries? Android?

Not unless they also had a Verizon phone already. The pre-order was for Verizon customers only. Most AT&T switchers (those who don't have Verizon service too) will get their chance on Feb 9.

I got a Verizon phone for my wife on Monday, so I was an existing customer and available to add a line and pre-order the Iphone.

I got mine! UPS tracking number, should have it on Monday. I'm glad I got up at 2am to order it. Goodbye AT&T.

I got a Verizon phone on Monday for my wife (she just wanted something simple) I wanted to make sure the signal was good at our home. If not, I had 14 days to return it. The signal was great, so being an existing customer I was able to add a line and pre-order the Iphone. I had an Iphone 3g with AT&T and my contract was up. I waited until they worked out the kinks in Iphone 4, and then to see if Verizon would get the Iphone. Timing is everything!

I can't upgrade till Aug, so I will just wait and get an iPhone 5 in July I hope.
All these people will be stuck with a 2 yr contract with the iPhone 4 not realizing the iPhone 5 should be out in a few short months.

The next generation 5 wont be out till next year. I bet all they release this June is a white iphone 4

Wow I'm shocked. NOT. Congrats to all the people getting a iPhone and not something like a iPhone(android). I know of 5 people that have leaped from a moto droid, droid x and incredible to get the iphone4. And they can't wait.

Also what's funny to me is they sold out in record sales a 6 month old phone. And a phone that will be replaced in 4 months.

Any number sold was a success for Verizon. The quantity that was reserved for preorders sold out so I would call that a success.
(mine is in transit as we speak, ready for a Monday arrival)

Verizon rep told my wife at 8AM EST yesterday that they'd already sold 330,000 iphones within the first 5 hours, so the rumored "less than 100,000" is likely way off. I'd say a million total.

I don't understand...why so successful?! I mean, after all, all these people have had an abundance of Android devices to choose from for a long time. What's so attractive about a 7-month old phone? Why the scramble in the wee hours of the morning?
(for those of you that might not be able to tell...I'm being sarcastic)
...best of luck, Google :-P

Seriously? Android is crushing all globally, to include the US. 625% growth year over year. If you think adding one US carrier will mean jack in the smartphone war you are delusional, but if it makes you feel better about your platform...Next up is tablet market.

Erik the Douche.
You are a toolbag. When Android platform phones are offered for free, what do you expect? 625% growth? Duh, genius.
And if you think Verizon getting iPhone 4 will not make a dent on your precious marketshare, then you are more of a jackass than I originally thought.

In the ROW we've had this situation for awhile and it hasn't killed of Android yet ;-)
Still I would really like to know what people are switching from, I'm actually expecting a net increase in smartphone users rather than a zero-sum Android/BB to iPhone transition.

Then look at the fact that Android has overtaken iOS in US marketshare in just a little over a year since the original Droid launch(no one counts G1 or Hero), will soon overtake BB, and Nokia globally. If Apple wants iOS to stand a chance it better get it's phone on all the US carriers and on as many carriers as possible globally.

Not gonna happen. Apple will not compete with Androids philosophy of cheap hardware, penny phones, Buy One Get One. The latest count was what, 25 phones on Android platform? With how many carriers?
If Yugo was the best selling car, would you go buy one? Yeah, I'm sure the real Eric Schmidt went to the car dealer and said, " Gotta get me a Corolla.".
Dude.....get a freaking clue!

Hey, Pat, uhm, he said if apple had the iphone on ALL carriers at launch, they would dominate, not if they made their phones cheaper!

i dont get why anyone would want to get this phone. the iphone 5 is only a few months away and if you get the iphone 4 you are locked into a 2 year contract. so unless you want to pay 600 bucks for a nice new fancy iPhone 5 you are screwed.

I think it will be minor changes. Might not expect a redesigned lte iphone until 2012 and probably then it'll be LTE. With Steve Jobs out, just might add more to that speculation.

Most people don't crave to have the latest and greatest and just buy stuff when they need them or when it is available to them. If they buy now, they'll just wait 18 months for iPhone 6 which is a perfectly fine scenario.

Your ignorance is offensive. Of course they do, your ridiculous. People don't max credit card limits because they are curious about the consequences. The fact people will literally drop carriers, involving termination of their contract and fork another 200 dollars over for an OUTDATED phone is a joke. Those of you who waited two years to enjoy a smartphone for the first time, enjoy.

And you actually think the same person doing that wont ditch the IP4 when the fifth gen comes out just as quickly.. but instead wait "16" months for the sixth? Yeah, last time I checked there is websites built and centered around the insanity that is "Iphone release". Journalists make careers out of this crap, and youtube has "unboxing" videos with hundreds of thousands of hits. Grasp reality my friend.
