Will there be a Verizon iPhone 5 this summer? (Or, should I wait?)

Will there be a Verizon iPhone 5 this summer?

Now that the Verizon iPhone 4 is out one of the questions we're getting hit with the most is -- will there be a Verizon iPhone 5 this June. In other words, should they wait, not buy now and get into a contract, and wait for the next generation iPhone in 5 months?

Here's the deal -- no one knows. This is a new cycle and there's no history to base a guess on. Apple usually releases new iPhones every June but they've all been the same GSM/AT&T iPhone. The Verizon iPhone 5 could easily be updated again, shown off at WWDC 2011 alongside the GSM iPhone 5. It's a different radio chip and so requires it's own product testing, but it could be done. Or Verizon could get the iPhone 5 in February 2012, a year after they get the iPhone 4.

So -- big surprise -- it's a gamble. Buy a Verizon iPhone 4 now and maybe you won't be able to get an iPhone 5 in June, or at least with a high level of subsidy. But you get to use an iPhone on Verizon five months earlier than you would if you waited.

Our advice on all this remains the same -- if you can't wait, if you have to have an iPhone on Verizon today, buy it and don't worry about the future. If you can wait, wait as long as you can and then buy the best iPhone (or any phone) available to you and again, don't worry about the future.

If you've already thought this over, let us know what you're going to do!

Eric8199 says:

You guys are KILLING me! I had my mind all made up that I was going to switch immediately as soon as its available, but now you've got me questioning my decision.
Here's what I thought: We don't know if there will be a new phone in June on Verizon. If there IS an update this year, it likely will be 3GSish, and incremental. Next year, if history repeats itself, will be a bigger update.
Verizon's new rules call for an upgrade for some customers at around 20 months, which would put you in a pretty good spot come next June when the iPhone 6 is announced, which will likely be the bigger upgrade. If you get the iPhone 5, you won't be eligible for the iPhone 6 next year, when LTE will likely come, etc.
SO, I am pretty sure that I'm switching in February. My wife has Verizon, and her service is a MILLION times better than my AT&T service, which is Edge-only where I live/work, and usually one bar or none most of the time.

Jindofox says:

Every iPhone bump has been incremental. The 3GS was a huge upgrade from my 3G and I paid a premium to get it early (double the storage space, autofocus camera, video camera, double the RAM, much faster for games).
The iPhone 4 wasn't quite enough to get me to buy it early: similar speed, same storage, plus the iPad was out. I really want the Retina screen and an HD camera, but not without a storage bump.
What do I want to see in the June 2011 iPhone? LTE isn't going to happen this year. At the very least:
CPU bump
better battery efficiency
storage bump
mobile hotspot
better navigation
Sitting on my hands til then ...

tomuky says:

Just BUY IT! If you take your ideology to the max, you would NEVER buy one! And isn't the point of looking at purchasing one to actually PURCHASE IT? What else do you want? It's on Verizon now. So go get one on February 10th and be happy. Don't let anybody else to tell you otherwise.

deviladv says:

When it comes to technology, you first have to establish what your needs are and how much you are willing to pay. Do you need a verizon iPhone now because at+t sucks that bad? Are you able and willing to pay another $200 and back out of your at+t contract to get one? If you can't afford the money or don't need it (and I mean need it) then don't get it. I don't ever base decisions on speculation. Apple's made it easy the past few years so you could wait until the announcement every June, but things change. If it's not going to kill you to wait, then wait.
I WANT an iPad, Apple TV, and Macbook pro very badly. I neither need nor can afford any of them, so I've chosen not to get them. I'm happy with my iPhone and iMac.

Juan says:

Really?? I'll trade you my iPad for your iMac ;)

frozencloud says:

im thinking the same. i think the best game for me now is the waiting game and see the next gen iphone if there is one in june/july. no point of jumping ship on a phone that will be outdated in 6 months.
and this whole hotspot thing is just a program thing from what i read...so we all will get it eventually.

Eric8199 says:

I bought an iPhone 4 on launch day on AT&T. I know that I can get probably $450 from it on eBay right now. Gazelle will give me $365 as of yesterday for my AT&T phone. So theoritically, I will have to pay very little to nothing to switch.
The only cause for debate is whether I will be OK with not getting the iPhone 5 in June, and I think I will be, because I'll actually have a phone I can use for once.

lcargile says:

Buying in Feb and can't wait.

Joe McG says:

If Apple stopped making a new iPhone every year, they would stop making as much money. The iPhone 5 is coming in June.

ricb says:

Iphone 4g...not Iphone 5....it makes sense like the iphone 3g....iphone 3gs

Aergad says:

I would put money on it that it will be iPhone 5 and not iPhone 4G. The only reason the "G" ever made it in as part of the name was because they wanted to tout the fact that the iPhone was no longer an EDGE device on AT&T. And the "S" was the bump up on basically the same platform. When they redesigned the iPhone, they just went with iPhone 4 with no references to the network. I think tying yourself to a network type is like when Microsoft used to put a year after their versions of Windows. Eventually you start to realize that you are using something really old.

Joe McG says:

If you want/need a Verizon iPhone now, just buy it. If you want to upgrade in June just buy the iPhone 5 and sell your iPhone 4 on eBay or Craigslist. Done.

Dan says:

yup every year i sell my last years model for like 450-500 bucks , quite easily too.
no big deal

solu says:

It's going to diff with a CDMA iPhone .. Gsm phones sell for more because they can be used in a lot of countries.. CDMA iPhone not so much.

carmendiva says:

I don't think GSM/Cdma really matters to most buyers on craigslist. I sold my iphone 4 to a girl who was no older then me(I'm 18) for like 500 bucks....I'm sure she could careless if it was at&t or gsm or cdma...Most ppl will buy an iphone just b/c its an iphone haha...my friend just sold an iphone 3g for 280 so you should be fine :)

LeBeef says:

since they refused to talk about it yesterday, i say that there will be another phone this year. Why tell people that this phone wont be the newest in 5 months. They have units to push now.

jpf22467#IM says:

I think I have it figured out. I am new to ATT as of last Feb, so I am still on the 3GS. I have tried with ATT to upgrade when the iphone 4 was released, but I was denied. I figure I have some leverage now. I plan on offering ATT my business, in return for an early upgrade to the iphone 4. I pay $300 for my new 32GB iphone 4. Sell my 32GB 3GS on Ebay for $300-$350 and break even. Then in June, when the iphone 5 comes out, I upgrade my wifes 3GS (she will be eligible in July). I get the new iphone 5, she gets my 6 month old iphone 4, and I sell her iphone 3GS for the price I pay for the upgrades.
Now I just need to figure out how I can get the iphone 6 next June

drabbit4u says:

I love how everyone is always plotting upgrades with someone else's phone. Does the wife get a say in it?

Gcombs says:

Lol She must not have a say.

Chris says:

I'm getting one in Feb. My storm is about to die I think.

ZOFOURTWENTY says:

Since RIM hasn't gotten their act together or offered any bit of info regarding the Storm 3, I will have to ditch my Storm 1 and get an iPhone on Feb 3rd, I'm eligible for an upgrade on Jan 22.

sangs says:

You have GOT to be freaking kidding me with this nonsense. Is it some sort of genetic code that won't let you stop writing Verizon iPhone rumor stories? God almighty I need to find another iPhone blog...

Shaun | MacMag.co.uk says:

They'll report the same. If it's an iPhone blog, and they don't talk about iPhone rumours, then they shouldn't really be blogging about iPhones ;) over the past several months Verizon iPhone rumour posts on blogs have been a traffic-generating goldmine.

sangs says:

Understood, but is it asking too much for a Verizon iPhone rumor moratorium? Now that they have it, it's immediately on to when will they offer the next version? Really? It's utter nonsense man. F****** breath for a week or so.

Shaun | MacMag.co.uk says:

There'll be an iPhone 5 across both networks come Summer 2011. I can't see Verizon customers becoming second-rate just because their iPhone falls out of line with Apple's typical iPhone release timeframe.
If Verizon offer a (very) early-upgrade scheme for iPhone 4 customers or not is yet to be seen.

Eric8199 says:

I think if anything Apple will be more willing to work with verizon than AT&T.

webvex says:

Both versions will be updated at the same time, next summer. Apple staggers the updates according to the product line, but not by individual models. All the iPods get updated at the same time, etc.

The Reptile says:

My guess is yes, but it will not be launched until after the GSM phone. Apple will sell far more units on GSM than CDMA so why launch CDMA first?

urkel says:

Maybe its wishful thinking, but my feeling is that Apple should move their product cycle to Feb.
The iPhone 4 is 8mo old but it still feels fresh in both style and features so why not push everything to Feb? LTE will be rolled out a bit better and maybe there will be better upgrades available than just "slightly faster".

Shaun | MacMag.co.uk says:

Off topic: Should I buy a MacBook Pro at next refresh? Or wish 'til OS X Lion and then buy at the next refresh?

sangs says:

Wonder when BMW will update the X5 series? What cast changes will be made for the third season of Community? Has word leaked yet when Verizon will get the iPhone 6? Oh wait, when will Sprint and T-Moblie get the iPhone!!!

Mr.mars says:

I think the whole cycle is gonnq change... Apple has had a busy year... An ipad 2, a cdma ipad, a cdma iphone, antenna fixes and allof that... Why should they make an iphone 5..? If they do, then i think ill stick with the 4th gen because its not gonna be much of a difference. The designs gonna be the same, and with all of this speculation, apple doesnt seem to have contemplated future features for a new iphone

Daniel says:

Just going by how Apple usually works the iPhone 5 most likely wont have 4g. This is because apple likes to make sure they have good working technology. i.e. the original iPhone didn't have 3g and alot of other features that phones had at that time. Even if they did get an iPhone 5 in June I dont think it would have too many other features maybe different design? Plus if it does have 4g will it even be in your area. I also think that verizon is going to give good deals with data plans for this one, and they may have problems letting people have unlimited and quit it before new one comes out. These are all very good things to consider. I know 4g wont be in my area for at least two years so i'm just getting one now!

fastlane says:

iPhone 4S in June. Then, iPhone 6 in 2012.

Icyhot1966 says:

I am preordering on the 3rd. Then I will see what happens down the road. I can't live my life on speculation (should I go to work today? What if I get ran over by an 18 wheeler) so I am going with factual. Verizon gets the iPhone 4 on the 10th. If they get the iPhone 5 in June, sell the 4 and get the 5. May lose a little money but you will not miss out on any of the iPhone goodness :)

iNickSays says:

No sense in switching/upgrading until there's an LTE iPhone IMO

Carioca32 says:

How about taking it easy with the buying compulsion? There is no indication that Apple will even lauch an iPhone 5 this year. The iPhone 3 lasted two generations and I think that's what gonna happen to the iPhone 4 as well. I think we will se a iPhone 4GS on June, for both AT&T and Verizon, with slight improvements over iPhone 4, and an iPhone 5 next year.
Launching versions that are too different every year will quickly tire Apple consumers, who will eventually tire of this monetizing game. It makes more sense to launch a significant upgrade every two years, and a slight improvement in between to consolidate the base.

Dave B. says:

A mockup of the iPhone 5 has already appeared. You can be assured there will be an iPhone 5 this year.

Lars says:

I think it is pretty clear that both AT&T and Verizon will get the iPhone 5 in June/July.
If you think Verizon won't do this - have you seen how many Android phones they release per year? Probably almost 1 per month on average.
Verizon customers are used to it... Buy a new phone and you risk a new phone appearing around the corner. That's the way the business works. (outside of Apple)

carmendiva says:

I don't think the android comparison works here...Just because the way Google and the manufacturers release devices is completely different to the approach apple takes....

Mr.mars says:

Verizon wouldnt do it... Apple overstocked iphone shipments like a powerhouse... Droid phones have less apeal because they get exctinct in like a 3 month period (exageration) and ape has a lot of control over their product.. So it isnt verizons decision. Im buying the vzw iphone 4.... Nothing will change my mind

chris says:

im going to buy one too im sure the 5 wont be that much of an upgrade from the 4 and I can wait another year im sure the 4 will hold me over until then

Vince says:

I will buy at launch and then if a new one comes out that is significantly different use the wifes upgrade to get the new one. This way we both have an iphone and I have the newest one out. I have a third upgrade sitting out there as of August 2011 so next year i'll be set as well.

seymour324 says:

Im getting it as soon as I can. Im pre-ordering it on feburary 3rd and retiring my droid x. Any time I wait around for the newest phone I am always disapointed

impaler says:

I agree with Jindo Fox (second poster) and others...I have had a 3GS since March 2010. I did not get a 4 when it came out, due to Antennagate, the huge cost of upgrading, and the fact I am actually trying to get through a cell contract for once, rather than start a new one summer 2010. If Apple offered a 64GB iPhone option, I would have likely done it, though...I have the 64GB iPad 3G and it's amazing...love the storage room. I rarely use a camera, and although the screen is awesome, it wasn't worth the huge cost of buying unsubsidized. So I'm waiting until this summer to see how the landscape looks. I can already get a discounted iPhone 4 through AT&T if I wanted it, so that'll only go down with time. I've found patience pays off in the long run--some of my friends that HAD to have the iPad on Day 1 in 2010 and got WiFi only are regretting not having the 3G iPad, which I have and use all the time. I also got in on the unlimited data plan right before they killed it so I have unlimited every month. :-)

Dood says:

Antennagate on the iPhone 4 was hardly the fuss that media sources built it up to be.

bmxfreak995 says:

i cant wait, i will be pre-ordering on the 3rd. part of the fun is being one of the first to get the newest tech, bugs and all!

Jason says:

The only way I would wait, is if I was migrating over from AT&T or if I already got a new droid type phone recently. I want the iphone, yesterday, and am a happy verizon customer..so I am there!

56K says:

I can't wait, 2/3/11 is my day.....

stynkfysh says:

My OPINION is that AT&T will be allowed to keep the iPhone 5 exclusive to them for a period as part of the agreement to terminate the exclusivity contract early.

Thorasgar says:

That one is interesting. May have some merit to it. Sure would keep the blogs ablaze.

ZOFOURTWENTY says:

Now there's something that hasn't crossed my mind and will file that in my conspiracy theory folder and will be just one more reason I upgrade on the 3rd

Jason says:

I have been waiting toooo long to hold out any longer. I tried to use AT&T when the 3G came out but the coverage was so BAD that I had to return it in 5 days and go back to Verizon. I have cried every night for the last several years. :) It is about to end.

Gcombs says:

Apple usually releases a new IPHONE every summer but i'm guessing just a refresh with a few new features and being HSPA+ for AT&T named IPHONE 4S. My theory is Apple is or working on a new IOS with a new UI along with a larger screen and other new hardware specs and being a real 4G LTE model for Verizon and AT&T for 2012.

Redshirt says:

That's my assumption as well. But I predict it will be called the iPhone 4G (with HSPA+ for the 4G part since everyone's calling HSPA+ 4G now) and the iPhone 5 LTE for 2012.

Gcombs says:

Great minds think alike. :)

fastlane says:

Why would it be called an iPhone 5 LTE in 2012 if it's the 6th model?

Gcombs says:

I'm sure it wont have a number behind it but it could be called 4G LTE or just LTE.

Ckidwell says:

I would love to get it in February, like everyone says, if you keep waiting for the next best thing you'll never upgrade, but thanks to verizons new upgrade policy, meaning no more annual upgrades, I'm not eligible until June now anyways. So I'll wait and see if iPhone 5 is announced for June/July and get it then.

klaudiiia says:

I am eligible for an upgrade on Verizon on March 14 of this year. This is about a month after the iphone 4 is put out for sale on VZW. I don't know if I should wait until the summer or not!

Omari says:

Thats stupid. Why would they release the iphone now then 4 months later have a new one. It makes sense they do it every year.

Ryan Rife says:

Here's a thought, maybe there won't be a new iPhone released this summer. With Apple focusing on the VZW iPhone & other projects there isn't really a need for them to release a new GSM iPhone in order to maintain their current profit margins....so perhaps they'll put off the normal release until a later date.

Garz says:

Buy it and worry about it later

RONIN says:

Verizon will NOT get the iPhone 5 in June but ATT will. Apple would not go through 2 years and 1000 Verizon iPhone 4 prototypes just to sell it in ONE market for 4 months.
June 2011 ATT-only iPhone 5 will be an evolutionary not a revolutionary upgrade of the iPhone 4 and the design will be essentially the same. It will have a bunch of minor improvements and additions such as NFC for mobile payments and better battery life.
Apple doesn't care if Verizon users get mad that they don't have the best iPhone. It's been this way since the iPhone launched. The way Apple sees it they should be happy to have any iPhone.
The CDMA Verizon iPhone is a joke to Apple. Just a placeholder until all carriers are on LTE. In terms of revenue it will be insignificant. You need to realize that Apple is a GLOBAL company and the world uses GSM.
Verizon will gain parity only once the iPhone goes to 4G/LTE in June 2012.
Sorry Verizon fans. Your iPhone 4 will be inferior upon launch (slower, shorter battery life, no simultaneous voice & data) and will fall further behind in June 2011. You'll also have way fewer cases to choose from because many accessory makers won't waste time on a one-off, one market design.

Greg says:

I can see the logic in your first point. It would be pretty poor planning to release the iPhone 4 to VZ now and then replace it in 4mos. Hardly worth all the effort that went into it. The only way that would have made sense would have been if they released a universal phone but when that was even suggested as possible the wireless companies threatened to remove their subsidies.
I disagree with your assertion that the VZ iphone is a joke to Apple though. This will go a long way to help them recapture the lead in the smartphone market in the US. It may be too little too late though. Android phones are going to be be pretty slick over the next year.
-Greg

Redshirt says:

Overly negative there Ronin. You an AT&T fanboy or something? 1) Android has practically 10 phones coming out each month. 2) If Android does it, why do you assume that it's the end of the world if Apple does it? 3) All those androids have different form factors/cases/etc. Case manufacturers have no problem making "one off's" for them. You get a good percentage of 100 million Verizon users getting the iPhone, that's more than enough reason to make a "one off" case. Especially when it'll be around for a year at least. 4) Your other items are all theoretical or personal till launch and people actually use it. Slower (I assume for data since the processor/memory is the same) beats no connectivity on AT&T. Shorter battery life (I haven't seen any tests on this yet so where are you getting this from?). No simultaneous voice & data, which may or may not be an issue for the current Verizon users who ALREADY don't have that. I really see this as an MMS thing. Whine whine whine, then when they get it, how many actually use it?

Greg says:

I'm not much of a waiter. If somethinng so good comes out in the summer then i will find a way. I believe that the iPad update will include a faster CPU and that the same CPU will be used in the iPhone 5. My plan is to upgrade to the new iPad 2 but to get the iPhone 4 and try to skip a generation on the upgrade.

KK says:

I am definitely pre-ordering!!! I believe iPhone 5 or iPhone Summer '11 will just be a software update and no big overhaul design. I can live with waiting two years once I have the iPhone 4. The point is I NOW have an iPhone on my network. I'm happy.

Crunch says:

I'm going to stay put and enjoy my iPhone 4 that I've enjoyed since July of 2010 and continue to stream video at speeds between 5-6 Mbps (speeds that initial 4G/LTE devices won't be able to beat), while I spend time chatting on the phone trying to decide if the person I'm talking to is more interesting or relevant than the video that I'm streaming.
Whoops, "There's a new episode from TiPb", a pushed-to-my-AT&T iPhone 4 is telling me, so that decision was just made for me. "Gotta git" I say without waiting for a reply, so that I don't miss so much as one second of my Jailbreak-enabled YouTube streaming and downloading app in the full glory of HighDef (by way of "My3G" ;) ). ...what was the question again?
The moral of this story: If I were on a Verizon iPhone 4 instead, I'd still be talking to one of my boring friends instead of enjoying a fresh episode from TiPb! TiPb FTW!!! :D

Redshirt says:

I wish I had those speeds on AT&T. I bounce around the 1Mb-1.4Mb range.

glenn#im says:

Back to the question. If iPhone 5 is a netter phone than version 4, then possible wait. If it is an upgrade with just a few bells & whistles, and you can just upgrade the iPhone 4 to the new iOS, get it Feb 3rd, or 10th.

peterg81#AC says:

My wife will upgrade right away. Me on the other hand, want it really really bad, but: i was with the big red for many many years and was tired of waiting for it on Verizon so I finally gave up and switched to AT&T last june on launch day!! I love the phone but hate the service!! So, because it'll be too much $ for ETF, I'm gonna wait til June and hope for Verizon iPhone 5 (4G). If it doesn't happen, I might as well wait til next Feb for the update! Oh well, decisions, desicions!!

Greginchina says:

I thought the iphone 5 was going to use a Qualcomm dual GSM/CDMA chipset. There are articles all over the net about that including at this website. If that's the case, then what's the point in having separate release dates for GSM and CDMA networks.

TK says:

I should hopefully be able to get it with my annual upgrade when it's released, unless the new upgrade policy changes for those already in a contract. I'm gonna take a chance and gamble that the iPhone 5 will essentially be the same as the iPhone 4 with just a few tweaks. Any iPhone model really does last quite a while, people are still getting the 3GS aren't they?

Steve says:

iPhone 5 will be out for both Verizon and AT&T around June 25 th. It will feature both GSM and CDSM capability, making the same phone for both companies, and aligning refresh cycles to the annual late June timeframe.
Then, in 2012, Apple switches to LTE for both. Having LTE on Droid or other phones now is irrelevant now that Verizon and even Sprint (coming soon!) will have an iPhone, and IOS will recapture the lead in smart phone sales.
There, see how easy this is?

david says:

Technology changes so fast! But you cant live your life based on speculation. If you want an iphone just buy it. If you have enough money buy it at full retail. Then a few months down the road get the new iphone and if you can donate or sell the older one. Stop speculating whats down the road. Eventually there will be an iphone 6 and an iphone 7.

P Money says:

Here is another thought. As a longtime Verizon customer I only do 1 year contracts. AT&T does not offer them but VZW does. So get a 1 year contract and upgrade every 10 months. Thats been my deal for the last 4 years and 4 smartphones. Oh and the cost is an additional $70 over the 2 year contract.

John says:

I will not be here for the iPhone 5, I'll be in training til September then over seas in October so I'm getting the iPhone 4 in Feb. so I can have a service that has coverage on the military bases I'll be staying at since att loves to not put a tower near bases where I train for months on end.

Tim Penrose says:

When it comes right down to it, I am, and I'm sure millions are as well, just happy the day has come... I'm ending this 3-year waiting game on the 3rd/10th... If by some strange chance Verizon lands an iPhone 5 this summer I have Craigslist and EBay on my favorites tab.

Aaron says:

I am currently using a BlackBerry Bold and will not be available for upgrade until March 2012. That said, I'll be buying an iPhone 4 at full retail on Feb 3rd. It's an easy decision for me as I can expect up to $200 for a smart phone purchase with my company. I can sell my Bold for at least $200 on eBay so it'll only cost me $200 out of pocket for the iPhone and not be under contract.

Fabian says:

Please tell me if my logic is off here.. This is my plan: I buy the Verizon iPhone 4 in February for $199. If the iPhone 5 comes to Verizon in June, I buy it at the non-upgrade eligible price of $400, and sell my iPhone 4 for $300 to recoup some of the price. Any flaws with this plan?

John says:

The flaw would be the price of the phone. The full retail price of an iPhone 4 is $599 for the 16gb model and $699 for the 32gb.
Once the iphone 5 gets released, count on prices for the iPhone 4 to go down accordingly.

Carl says:

Sounds about right, Fabian. Did that with my wife's AT&T iPhone 3G when the 4 came out. 2 years off the product cycle and I got $260 for it almost immediately.

Steve says:

Can I ask where you sold this? I have an iPhone 3G also but I can barely get an offer for over $100

Johnny Polo says:

I'm happy with my Droid X right now (and the Android system works), so I will wait until my contract is up to decide (I don't have any allegiance to ANDROID or iOS - I own both a PC and Mac, and use them for different reasons). By next, LTE will probably be up and running, and the iPhone 5 will also probably be out and LTE compatible. Then I will think about it. My wife wants the iPhone (any smartphone, really), and I will probably suggest to her to wait until next year, and we'll probably each get one.

Chuck says:

I am going to jump head first for the iPhone when it hits the market next month. I have been patiently waiting for the it to come to Verizon. Where I live, LTE won't be available for several years. My rationale is to go ahead and purchase it now and by the time the LTE is ready and my contract expires upgrade. Also I keep reading rumors that LTE plans will not have unlimited data but the iPhone 4 3G will.

Mike says:

Very undecided at this time, had the iPhone for 2+ years, now using the Droid Incredible for 10 months, ready to get an iPhone back in my hands, wife would not leave her iphone so she is still with ATT.
Can't decide whether to wait or go with iPhone4. My concern with possible iPhone5 is it may have LTE, which it can be expensive and definitely a battery drain (Bro-in-Law has Sprint EVO4), 3G is fine for me thus far, but I always enjoy having the fastest processor so I can take advantage of all the apps and programs. Thoughts?

ongre10 says:

I just returned a DroidX after a week. An amazing device but I await the iPhone5 and Droid Bionic on Verizon to make my choice. I am currently on a month to month with no contract with Verizon, so the choice will be mine. LTE will be faster than 3G,(And more costly.) but where I commute it will not make any difference until the last quarter of the year.
I want a smart phone for the WiFi hotspot feature and to stream audio as I drive and work. Local radio stinks where I live.
Going from CDMA/3G to LTE will mean a definite technology change for everyone. The carrier must have essentially 2 systems going and the phones you buy for several years will have both systems available to work anywhere. Eventually as I understand it, the LTE and technologies further on down the line will move all voice calls to VOIP. I think Verizon's introducing their version of Skype to their phones is a precursor to the VOIP move.

mlfgc says:

It only makes sense for apple to make it a global (hybrid gsm/sim/cdma) phone so they can manufacture one phone for all. Remember that apple is no longer exclusive to anyone as mentioned in the "event". So if more carriers are definitely possible, It only makes sense (won't be lte)

Raf says:

I know one thing for sure. the iphone 5 will definitely not be lte capable.

Kim says:

I have the Droid X with Verizon now. I plan to wait for the iPhone 5. Hopefully, it will be released in June.

mlfgc says:

My plan is to get an iphone now (I've waited since march09) and take another upgrade plan for the iphone5. So THIS is why I put up w a family plan huh?

Richard says:

Well theres news sites talking about the new iphone coming out for summer.. but honestly i wont wait... according to
ABC news says they will offer an unlimited data plan for a limited time... so either you can have iphone 4 now and have unlimited data plan or wait to get new iphone but have different data plans none of them being unlimited... so ill just get iphone now and depending what iphone comes out ill decide if its worth swapping to new iphone or not ...read about it here http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/techbytes-verizons-unlimited-data-plan-...

Ulis101 says:

Well I was just planing on using my iPod touch 4 and a Virgin Mobile MiFi until the iPhone 5 comes out, will I miss out on anything if I do that?

NCTECH says:

I've been waiting for Verizon to get the iPhone since I heard rumors in 2010. I currently have a Blackberry Curve that I will be upgrading to the iPhone4 on Thursday. I have 3 lines on my verizon account two of them are eligible for an upgrade this year. I will save the other upgrade to see if the iPhone5 is released in July.

irishpayne says:

I am going to get the iphone 4 as soon as it hits the streets.... the way I figure it, I keep the iphone 4 until June 2012, when the iphone 6 comes out, and can upgrade at the cheaper price...where as i wait till the 5 comes out, then have to wait till the 7 for the cheaper price.... 700 bux is too much to fork out over a phone every year!

Taylor says:

How do you know the iPhone 6 is going to come out July 2012?

Steve says:

Because they bring out a new iPhone every summer without fail

jackrock says:

I hate my Droid. Lags, glitches, apps don't load, its a pain in the but. I'm waiting for the iphone4 to come to Verizon in a few days but I don't know if I should wait till iPhone 5 comes out. If it comes out a couple months after 4, ill get it.

Mynameisnotimportant says:

I am in the same situation. I just preordered the iPhone. My logic is, if it's broken then fix it. There will be an iPhone coming out every year, I'm not upgrading every year. Every two sounds about right.

Andy says:

Here is my plan: Purchase Verizon iPhone 4 now and keep for a year until either February 2012 for the iPhone 5 (assuming that's when Verizon will pick it up) or wait until June 2012 for the very new iPhone version... Would that be lame?

John Lee says:

I'm going to go ahead and get the iPhone 4. Even if you wait 5 months and get the iPhone 5, according to the cycle, the new iPhone 6 will be out only 12 months later. We live in a world where it is almost impossible to keep up with technology. No matter what you buy, there is something bigger and better in the near future.

Angela says:

I am going to patiently wait until summer to see if the iPhone 5 comes out and figure out what its features are and go from there. I have a Droid and don't want to give up anything to get an iPhone. I'd like to see how it does on the Verizon network and have all the glitches figured out before I make the switch.

Dwight says:

I'm waiting. Especially since my "New Every 2" isn't until July. Although I've heard they're doing away with that (Eventually? Soon?)

Whit says:

I called Verizon worried I would loose my new every two. I was told, starting in March, customers will received their new every two, and it will be their final one. (ie if you have one in Feb you are lucky because you should get another in two years, but go and upgrade right away.) Mine however is March 10th much less lucky.

Necter says:

I have been waiting for the VZ iPhone to come out since my 2 year contract expired in oct 2010. I purchased the iphone4 (less $50 every two discount) and paid $150. Now I'm locked into a contract until oct 2013. I do believe the iphone5 is coming out for all networks, using sim card tech. The only reason the iphone4 was "late" to arrive, or close to the iphone5 launch, it took too long for apple/vz to make their deal with each. Apple knows the market. We know all markets will be going 4g sooner or later. iPhones to come will work across the board, which is exactly what apple wants. I believe VZ is offering unlimited data to all who purchase iphone4 as a, oops sorry about the 5 coming out in July. People who wait for 5 won't be able to get unlimited data. IMO. I've seen all the upcoming 4g VZ phones coming out (thunderbolt, samsung, lg, motorola, etc) and all I can say is BULKY! My dilemma is 3G VZ servIce sucks at my house, but it's the only network that works. 4g VZ servIce will be fast. It will be stronger and penetrate buildings easier. Do I trade my iphone4 in within the 16 say trial period, buy a crappy fone and wait for 4g service and bulky 4g droid? Hoping the signal will reach my house? I know what ur thinking... Buy the signal booster for $250 for your iphone4. ya right! It's a 3G phone on a 3G network, that's about to launch it's 4g network at the end/beginning of the quarter. (march/April) VZ is already advertising it's 1st 4g phone, the HTC Thunderbolt aka thunderbulk. All 4g phones will be able to talk/data at the same time. Now I have to wait until July for the 4g iphone5 comes out. Who knows maybe that signal won't reach my house either. I'm rambling

William says:

I got the Verizon Iphone 4, in June I'll sell it on ebay for $400 and get the iphone 5 for $600, I only invest $200. Why wait...life is short, enjoy it to the fullest.

steve says:

william i am in the same boat do i get i phone 4 or wait till i phone 5 but i like ure thinking sell it on ebay if and when iphone 5 come out

Dylan says:

I am SO confused. I just got an iPhone 4 with AT&T, and I already wanna get an iPhone 5. What should I do? I feel like my parents would not let me get the iPhone 5 (I'm only 13). But I love technology, and I am certainly one of those people who loves to have the latest and greatest. But should I let this whole ordeal bring me to a depression? Or should I just wait for my contract to be up with AT&T and get whatever iPhone is newest then? I feel like I'll feel so bad once I see the iPhone 5 come out, and I'll no longer feel like I have the newest and best, but the old and outdated. Please help to convince me that it's not all that bad! Decisions, decisions...

Older & Wiser says:

Please tell me you're kiding? Seriously, a 13 year old that's concerned about having the latest phone. Do yourself and your generation a favor, get rid of the iPhone and start speding more of your time studying. Our country is already in decline, so why should you allow Apple's slick marketing control you mind at such a young age. Start thinking for yourself...

ololololololololololololololol says:

lmao, it's better for a kid to be obsessed with the newest technology than being a full grown sheep.

loling a little here too says:

lmao too because those sheep fix your broken bones and keep you safe at night. Give the 13 year old an iPhone 5 if he wants to dismantle it and figure out how it works, but not just so he can watch Bam online and call his bros at the same time. Technology isn't bad, but in untrained hands/minds it can make sheep faster than a dozen Floydian teachers raised by drill sergeants. And to be depressed about not having the thing... our ancestors are rolling over in their graves. I cannot imagine that this is what they fought and sacrificed so much for. Depressing, indeed.

thommy says:

Make friends, hang out with them. Don't be obsessed over phones! What has our young generation become? :/

Mark says:

Since I really cant afford a new phone right now, i will wait until at least August to buy and see what is available at that time...hoping for Iphone 5 but will take Iphone 4 if that is all that is there.

Nick says:

The iPhone 5 will be on AT&T and Verizon networks on its release date in Fall or early next year. It won't be available in the summer due to the tsunami/earthquake in Japan which caused delay in parts. It will be available on all networks I assume due to the fact that it will be global-ready, according to leaked information bellow:http://www.mobiledia.com/news/87732.html

Brian says:

I have been a Verizon customer for quite some time and just upgraded to HTC thunderbolt. This is an excellent phone but I want my music and always wanted iPhone. I am going to exchange it for iPhone 4 and wait to upgrade to next iPhone when contract is up. The thunderbolt 4g LTE just drains battery to fast. Got around 4 to 6hrs of battery life.

Kevin says:

Hi, everyone.
Everybody talk about the iphone swap things.
here is the point Everyone that who had iphone4, they will trying to sell their iphone 4, and purchase iphone5. However, if iphone 5 coming out, it will be on 4G network. then, who's gonna purchase used iphone 4 with 3G network?

ali jaafar says:

i have iphone 3gs and 4g and an ipad 2 , aim in love with and iam very anxiuos to know if iphone 5 will this june bcuz i wanna buy it , and other thing is it going to have another deigne and better looking iphone 4 and thank you

Lyndia says:

It doesn't pay to ge the IPhone 4 from Verizon because you cannot talk on the phone and surf the internet.

Fudgemuffin410 says:

I bought the iPhone 4 and love it. I'm glad I waited for this version because the second camera is extremely beneficial.

Markflevy says:

I really want the Iphone5 but really have to get rid of my older phone that I service with Verizo.I really want the Iphone but do not want to wait until September or even after the first of the year 2012. What should or what can I do?Please respond. Thanks

Mooooooo:)immaguest says:

I have been waiting waiting for a little over 6 months for the iphone 5 to come out.I heard that it was coming out this month but I read another article saying it comes out either february 2012 or at the earliest of september 2011. My droid 2 is horrible and I'm dying for an iphone but I don't want a new iphone to come out a few months after I get the iphone 4.So it's really hard to make a decision.:(IT NEEDS TO COME OUT SOONER!

quest says:

I am not understanding. My question is when verizon going to get the iphone 5? or Are they going to get them?

Markflevy says:

Hi Is the Iphone 5 going to come out this summer or in September?I really want to get it.

IPhone5 says:

I am the iPhone 5, and I'm coming out, I want the world to know!

Wingnett2 says:

you go you good thing, the world needs to know

Ruda169 says:

What the crap is going on. Easy to say the iPhone 5 ain't coming out in June so maybe July or september. Or 2012 does anyone know?

lilly says:

I have had the droid incredible for a year now and love it. However, my husband's company is getting everyone iphones. I want to be able to use the facetime app w/him because he travels so much so I will get the iphone 5 when it comes out. But I haven't had any problems w/ my droid like the last poster.

Drsavage says:

I want an Apple iPhone 5 with 4G ability ASAP. I want to stay with Verrizon due to excellent coverage. I need the 4G capability for the speed in my business needs.

Rebecca Wilson Glass says:

Still Waiting.. and I'd bet on FEB 2012.. So I will be waiting..

Halley Oravec says:

The OTA wi-fi limitation is likely imposed by carriers and not by Apple, kind of like the whole Facetime over 3G thing

iphone says:

Outstanding post, you have pointed out some excellent details , I also think this s a very excellent website.

Doug Mccain says:

I think I'll send this to my roommate we were just talking about this last month!

Hettie Alspach says:

I have to say that for the past couple of hours i have been hooked by the impressive posts on this blog. Keep up the good work.
