Whatsapp finally gets its long awaited iOS 7 makeover

For such an insanely popular app, Whatsapp sure has been dragging its heels when it comes to any form of iOS 7 update. Now, at long last, it's here, and it looks pretty much as you would imagine an iOS 7 styled Whatsapp would look. Beyond the razzle dazzle, there's more for Whatsapp users in this update to get their teeth into:

  • broadcast lists: communicate with your classmates, work colleagues or just friends by messaging many people at once.
  • improved share location: 3D map view, hide places, search places
  • large thumbs: see more
  • new notification alerts and sounds: WhatsApp Settings > Notifications > New Message.
  • application will now use your device text size as configured in iOS Settings > General > Text Size
  • new improved User Interface for managing your blocked contacts: WhatsApp Settings > Chat Settings > Blocked
  • crop image before sending

Broadcast lists in particular is an interesting new addition, since presumably if you're a frequent Whatsapp user it's because you've a lot of people that you talk to through it on a regular basis. Hooking into iOS 7 is the biggest deal here though, noticeable also in that it will recognize your system text size settings.

The update is pushing out now through the App Store, so if you've been chewing your fingernails waiting on it then have at it! We're sure a whole heap of you will be using it today, so be sure to drop us a line in the comments and tell us how you like it.

Just wondering what are the "large thumbs: see more" being used for. Large texts?

Richard Devine says:

Larger thumbnails perhaps...?

Stevenojobs says:

Yes it is ! When you send an image, the preview is bigger in the chat...

RidhwaanAziz says:

Whatsapp could be so much better designed... Be so much more easier and nicer to use to use. Could be SO much more! If only...

linsiris says:

Agreed! It looks the very same to me but with colors washed away, no innovation or "wow" factor here. I like more some of the concepts around the net, one would think that with all the users and options out there they should've given it a complete overhaul to this app, I'm disappointed.

It's not showing up in the US App Store for me. Weird.

Updated today in the morning.. I am quite content with the design.. It has matched upto iOS 7 but the application has started lagging alot.. switching from one chat window to other reminds me of my BlackBerry days!

iEfstratios says:

There is a letter missing in the title! :-)

agarwal.apar says:

Apple ate that letter in their new line up of iPhone! lol

Finally!!! Much better. It looked positively archaic before. Cleaner fresher nicer. All good.

Still no proper read receipts tho.... One tick for sent to server one tick for sent to recipients phone. That's it

BBM has status icons for both of the above but also (and crucially) read as well. Meaning you know if the recipient. Has actually physically read the message.

This for me is very important and although the ios 7 update on what's app has improved it hugely it is still lacking this key feature

That's great I'm sure it looks wonderful, but since we're talking about long awaited apps that having had an iOS 7 update lets talk about YouTube why hasn't YouTube been updated for iOS 7 is it some rival thing where google says "since your using iPhone to use YouTube your going to be stuck on iOS 6 hahaha" like come on 9 out 10 people use the app, just make a better version.

Google is updating its apps gradually for iOS 7. YouTube is by no means the worst offender in the App Store.

Still not a huge fan of the notification options available in whatsapp. Though it's an improvement. I do however tend to dislike notifications overall on iOS. that's one of the things I really miss about android. Why can't I have my phone ring but other things vibrate Apple?

Overall, good update.

It finally got the makeover and it looks good too. But it is showing signs of lag especially when switching between apps. Moving between chats within the app isn't quite smooth yet too.

Is it just me or is there a Parallax effect now for the chat bubbles with respect to the wallpaper? (If reduce motion is disabled)

still dragging their heels with gif images also ...

most people in 2013 send and receive gifs, but for now I'm stuck with the ever temperamental ever unreliable imessage !

at least imessage can send and receive gifs (when it's working lol).. it's something that should have been available on whatsapp 2 years ago .. but latest update offers nothing ..

Still no contact groups support. Syncing both iCloud and Gmail contacts make a mess of the WhatsApp address book.

Petri Oosthuizen says:

I like the design but the app lags.
