Today Ubisoft announced Assassin's Creed: Pirates, a naval combat game headed to smartphones and tablets this fall. This is going to be a tie-in with the upcoming Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, though separate from the companion app that they'll be launching as a second screen experience to the console game. In true piratey fashion, players fire off cannons at enemies, hunt for treasure, upgrade their ship, and take on new crew. Over time you'll also earn perks to help you along the way, and no doubt if you're into the console game, you'll recognize a few of the characters that pop up in the campaign.

I'm woefully behind on my Assassin's Creed games, to be honest. Bought the third one, but have yet to really dig in; so many games, so little time, y'know? I suppose that's the nice thing about mobile tie-ins like this one - you can get a taste of the story whereever you are, without having to settle in for several hours in front of the TV. Assassin's Creed has been on mobile by way of a 2D platformer, a top-down multiplayer game, and a card game, but I think this naval warfare thing is a nice change of pace, and probably better-suited for tablets and smartphones.

Any Assassin's Creed fans out there? Who's going to be picking up Black Flag?
